The College is extremely proud to have had the opportunity to welcome Gail Mabo,
daughter of Eddy Mabo to be the special guest speaker at our NAIDOC celebrations.
Gail, a gifted artist, dancer and speaker took time out of her busy agenda to be our guest
at our celebration of NAIDOC 2017. In her presentation to the College, she shared her
experiences of growing up as the daughter of Eddy Mabo and the tussles he and his
family faced in his struggle for Native Land Rights.
Gail spoke at length of the importance her father placed in gaining the right for
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to access their land and how all Australians have a
responsibility to look after this land of ours. For Gail Mabo, her father's tireless fight has left her with a fierce pride. Gail
told us "With what Dad's done for indigenous Australia, they've now found their voice and that Mabo will be forever with
us if we keep him alive”. She stated, “I like to empower people,” and “Information is a fantastic tool,” and she urges us to
Google Mabo and ask questions, to make sure we know his story and the incredible contribution he made to the world.
Gail in her role as an Artist took the opportunity to
complete some Art Workshops with the Indigenous
students, where the students were encouraged to paint
some artworks that reflect their connection to the College
and the community at large. These Artworks will be used
in College celebrations throughout the year.
Gail also took the occasion to teach our Year 12 students some indigenous dances
that she was taught by her father when she was growing up.
The Studies of Religion students had the opportunity to talk with Gail
on the impact of the Mabo decision on Australian society.
Gail was able to answer the students’ insightful questions, providing them with valuable knowledge.
Gail concluded her visit by being the guest speaker at our NAIDOC assembly.
College Celebrates 25th Anniversary of the Mabo Decision
On Monday, 5 June Laura Chapman and I attended the
live broadcast of Q&A at the ABC Studios in Ultimo.
We both submitted questions for the panel of politicians
and professors, and I was invited to ask my question
concerning the recent calls for pre-emptive detention
laws in Australia for use against suspected terrorists,
even without definitive evidence of Jihadist activity.
The question sparked a heated debate and the night was
definitely a memorable experience for the both of us.

Appeal 2017
Late last term, the College St Vincent de Paul Society
group conducted an appeal for non-perishable food
items, warm clothes and blankets for people less
fortunate than us.
We would like to thank everyone who supported this
appeal. It was very successful and we were able to
donate 12 sizable cartons of food to the needy.
The clothes and blankets were donated to the St Vincent
de Paul Centre at Islington and the food items were
divided amongst the House of Hospitality at
Broadmeadow and the St Vincent de Paul Society
Conferences at Merewether Beach and Waratah. No
doubt, they all appreciated the generosity of our
students.

Last term St Francis Xavier's College entered a team in
the Diocesan Debating Competition at St Paul's High
School, Booragul. This is the second year that our
College has competed in this competition. Our team
consisted of Henry Maher, Lucy Lantz and Hannah
Hickey. These three represented the College with
distinction and maturity. Unfortunately we were not able
to progress to the final, however, the students had access
to the delicious hospitality of St Paul's Booragul and
were able to mix with other students from the diocese.

NSWCCC Hockey Championships
The NSWCCC Hockey
Championships were hosted by
SFX in Newcastle May 19-20. We
had a number of students
competing as part of the Boys’ and
Girls’ teams, as well as a number
of students who volunteered to
work the tech benches on the day.
Our Boys’ team displayed some
fantastic team play and skills level
as they competed throughout the
tournament. With many boys’
having picked up the hockey sticks
for the first time for this carnival.
Unfortunately, they were knocked
out of the finals due to their for-
and-against.
Our Girls’ showed some fierce
skill and endurance, only losing
one game throughout the
tournament and going down in the
Grand Final. All students
displayed incredible sportsmanship
on and off the fields, representing
our community with great pride.
A massive congratulations to Mr
Phil Oke for organising and
convening the day. Having done
such a great job for the second
year in a row, he has been asked to
host a trifecta with SFX hosting
the Championships again in 2018.
Also, thank you to our coaches
Mrs Amanda Corrigan and Mr
Casey Kirkup for coaching and
supporting the teams on the day.

Regional Surfing Titles
The regional school surfing titles were held on Friday, 5
May at Dixon Park beach with Ruby Voyzey and
Montanah McCormack competing in the Open Girls’
section and Josh Morgan and Charlie Harrison
competing in the Open Boys’. Conditions, although
being small, were clean and highly contestable all day.
The girls’ combined to win the team event, with Ruby
finishing 4th in the individual placings. The boys’ surfed
well in their highly competitive division to finish 4th in
the teams and Josh finished 5th in the individuals.
All competitors are to be congratulated on their efforts.
Good luck to Ruby and Montanah who now progress to
the State Titles to be held in Port Macquarie mid-July.
A big thank you to Mr Justin Gordon who was not only
the SFX Team Manager but also organised and
convened the Regional Surf Titles Carnival.
Year 12 student, Pearcen Nicholson recently represented New South Wales
in the U/18 National Ice Hockey Championships which were held at Adelaide

NSWCCC Football
We are very proud of our seven students who competed in the NSWCCC Football Championships May 30-
31. Tess Symington, Belle Hewitt, Harrison Crook, Bonfils Rugaruza, Danilo O’Brien, Kane Treble
and Ayden Von Esson all trialled earlier this year in April and were successful in being selected as part of
the Maitland-Newcastle Team.
They all played incredibly well on the day against Catholic Dioceses in the State, with the Girls Diocesan
Team placing third overall throughout the carnival.
NSWCCC Basketball
The College would like to congratulate Jacob Foy on his selection and participation in the NSWCCC
State Basketball Team, along with Ethan Dawber who was selected in the NSWCCC team, however,
was unable to play due to injury.
Jacob has proven himself as a highly talented Basketballer, displaying great skill and sportsmanship
on the court whilst playing on June 5 at the State Carnival. Jacob’s next representative Basketball
venture will be representing the College as part of the Open Boys’ Team at the NSWCCC Basketball
Championships June 19-20.
We wish Jacob and Ethan all the best in their future sporting endeavours.

Girls’ Diocesan Football-Knockout Tournament
The Girls’ Maitland-Newcastle Diocesan Football Knockout Carnival was held on Thursday, 15 June
at Victoria Park, Muswellbrook, kindly hosted by St Joseph’s Aberdeen.
Our SFX Girls’ had an incredibly successful day, progressing through the tournament undefeated. The
girls displayed some magnificent Football skills, and with only one training session under their belts,
quickly came together as a team to make formidable opponents. They only conceded one goal all day,
thanks to our goalkeeper Eloise Franks, along with the cool and calm direction of their Captain Chloe
Kapalos.
The girls played three matches, winning 1-0 against St Mary’s Maitland, 9-0 against St Paul’s
Booragul and winning their Grand Final against St Peter’s Maitland 2-1 in extra time. The girls’ will
now progress through to round two within the NSWCCC Knockout Tournament against Gosford from
the Broken Bay Diocese.
The coaching team is incredibly proud of the way they played and conducted themselves on the field
as they represented our College.
A big thank you to Mrs Amanda Corrigan and Ms Amanda Calvi for coaching & managing the girls’,
as well as our bus driver Mr Alex Lojszczyk for safely getting us to the fields and being our team
photographer for the day.
NSWCCC Touch Football
A very successful tournament for our Girls Diocesan team resulting in the selection of Maya Stewart to
progress through as part of the NSWCCC Touch Team.
Maya, making the return from a significant injury sustained whilst playing Touch Football last year at the All
Schools Touch Carnival, showed that her commitment and level of skill was as good as ever. Maya is now
balancing her training regime with HSC commitments and looking forward to the next stage of her sporting
career. We wish Maya all the best with the next level of the competition.
We are very proud of all our students for making it this far and representing the College.
