The men and women of the Toy Committee selflessly give of their time and talent to make beautiful toys to brighten up the Christmas of the less fortunate children of Orange County that might otherwise have nothing else to look forward to. The OCWA is proud to have such a program, and we hope you will help us support it. It is to this end that the OCWA puts on our annual October fund raising auction to support our Christmas Toy Program, and you can be a part of this effort by donating your heirloom tools and equipment, wood, hand made object’s de art, edibles, and just about anything that moves in your garage, except maybe your worthless brother in law, but that’s another story. This will also be an opportunity to pick up some of the aforementioned items for your own personal collection. What a deal! Does it get any better than that? I don’t think so. Speaking of Christmas, every year the OCWA celebrates the holidays by having our annual OCWA Christmas party. It will be on December 8 th of this year, but after last year’s dismal attendance of the event we have decided that we need to make some changes for this year’s gala. The first change has been to find a different caterer. This year we will use a private caterer instead of the local restaurant that we’ve used in the past. This is an effort to please the delicate palates of the finicky woodworker. There will still be a few whiners out there that would complain about a free lunch, but we can’t do anything about them. Our second change is that we are going to require that each member RSVP for themselves, and one guest only for the party. It only makes sense that we do this, so we can ascertain what will be needed for the party. In the past we had to reserve the bigger room at the Senior Center, because of the larger crowds we were attracting, but last year we barely filled half the room, which truly was disappointing, and caused the Board to consider whether to even have a party at all. In the end, being the party animals that we are, we decided that RSVP’s would be the way to go. The last change will be to return the start time of the party to the original 7:00 P.M. start time instead of last year’s 6:00 P.M. start time. what it is these days 6:00 P.M. was just too difficult a time to get anywhere in Orange County, so to soothe everyone’s nerves, and to keep them in the holiday spirit, we decided that this change was necessary. We will have a Christmas Party RSVP table set up at the September meeting, and for those of you who have a computer, you can RSVP to our www.ocwoodworker.com web site, or send your RSVP via snail mail to our P.O. Box in Fullerton. It is important that all RSVP’s be received by the October meeting. We will not accept any reservations after that date, and they will be required to attend the party, so please don’t forget to make your reservations now. The Board of Directors and I are committed to making membership in the OCWA as enjoyable an experience as possible by having top quality speakers, and events available to our membership, but without your participation it amounts to much ado about nothing. We need your input, and involvement to keep the OCWA as a viable part of the Woodworking Community. Please remember that without you there is no Orange County Woodworkers Association.

All in all, August ended up being a busy month for woodturners. First, we were pleased to present gifted artist Art Liestman for a demonstration and later we were all able to enjoy this month’s program, featuring Paul Rosenau.

I think we were all impressed by the work done by Paul during the Orange County Fair. His delicate thin walled bowls were admired by visitors and members alike. At the August meeting, we got to see his techniques in action. Paul first discussed how he harvests his wood, typically using freshly cut trees from the urban landscape. He discussed cutting a bowl blank using only a chain saw and then mounting the blank on the lathe. Paul has crafted a drive center using plywood and sharpened bolts that is tailor-made for holding uneven chunks of wood. Each dog (i.e. bolt) is individually adjustable to account for the uneven surface. This fixture allows him to shape the outside of the bowl and turn a foot for the chuck. Although Paul’s bowl turning techniques are mostly conventional, he uses a heavy scraper to good effect. The scraper is used only for finishing cut and is elevated on one edge and used in a shearing fashion that limits

the tear out and dig-ins typical of scraper held flat on the tool rest. I’m afraid the clock intruded on the demonstration and he didn’t quite get to complete it. Hopefully Paul can bring the finished piece to a future meeting for all of us to admire.

In keeping with our usual practice, this month’s challenge followed last month’s demonstration of bottle stoppers. Our judge, Fred Wilmott was nearly overwhelmed by the quantity and quality of the entries. Based on volume and variety, the winner of the challenge was George Plummer. Next month’s challenge is thin walled bowls. Let’s seen just how thin you can go.

Next month’s demonstrator will be Bill Haskell. He is going to show us the techniques that he uses to make baby rattles. As a new grandfather of twin boys, I am really looking forward to learning from one of the best. I hope to see you all there.

Here is sampling of some of the woodturning activities coming up between now and the end of the year:

Dick Foremen Open House: Dick has graciously agreed to open his home and shop on Saturday, September 23, 2006 from 9 AM – 3 PM. His address is 1526 E. San Alamo Ave., Orange, CA 92865. Members and partners

are welcome. Dick even says there will be munchies available.

Annual Woodturning Contest: We will hold our annual woodturning contest during the monthly meeting on November 16th. The rules of the contest are listed below. If you haven’t started on that masterpiece, it’s time to get hopping.

Wood Turning Contest Rules 1. Entries will be accepted in 2 classes

• Master Class – experienced turners who have demonstrated "for sale" quality work, have sold work, or won prizes in turning contests.

• Novice Class – beginning and intermediate turners who do not meet the Master Class definition.

2. All entries must be lathe-turned objects; they may be embellished with carving, inlay, or other decoration.

3. Entries shall not have been entered in to any other contest in any venue.

4. Judging will be done by an independent panel, which will evaluate:

• Quality of work

• Design and originality

• Use of the material

• Other factors the judges see fit to consider.

5. The judges' decisions will be final. 6. Prizes in each class are a combination of

cash and gift certificates in the amount of:

• First prize – $75

• Second prize – $50

• Third prize – $25

• The judges may award additional honorable mention certificates

7. Wining entries should be made available to be displayed at club displays and activities for the following 12 months.

8. Entrants must be members of OCWA. 9. A member may submit up to 3 entries but

may only receive 1 prize.

At last month meeting, I handed out a survey sheet. I’ll have it again at this month’s meeting as well as online in the member’s discussion group. Please take a few minutes to respond. It really helps me to gage the interest of the club.

On a closing note, Art Liestman’s demo was quite successful. Those who attended were privy to the techniques and “secrets” of one of the foremost woodturning artists today. Art has an engaging style and the day was non-stop information. From a financial standpoint, the demo was also successful. Thank you to the people that helped put it together, Art Fitzpatrick, Ed Straub, Jack Rolison, Chester Maharaj and a huge thanks to Joe Lomax. Bob Buchanan has posted some great pictures of the demo on the OCWA web site at: http://ocwoodworkers.com/ocwood/Main.aspx?page=FileVault

Remember our meetings now start at 6:30.

Our monthly workshop was held at Roger Balling’s shop, which was a very productive session. I wanted to share with you a little know benefit of the Toy Program concerning the beautiful boxes and hearts we make. The have become a special request item by hospitals, especially Loma Linda University Children's Hospital. When a child or baby leaves this earth, the boxes become a memorial cradling a precious lock of hair, or bit of blanket, or a pair or tiny booties. It is my understanding that when the parents are given our boxes, they are very touched and grateful for the thoughtfulness. A reminder, the more toys you turn in, the more raffle tickets earned. We still need help to reduce the wood inventory at Bill Rogers’ and Tom Polhamus’ places. Please help. The September 9th workshop will be held at Bill Rogers’ shop from 8 am until noon.

Our world-class woodworkers' club is scheduled for a terrific program for the upcoming September meeting!

The ninth in this years Distinguished Speaker Series will feature Joe Lomax, OCWA gracious sponsor of so many of our activities. His presentation will feature some tools not yet seen by many of us . . . one hand plane that I would personally kill for.

The owner of Austin Hardwood, Joe not only is the keeper of the largest herd of wood giraffes this side of South Africa, but privately a collector and aficionado of antique woodworking tools. Joe has been a credit and an asset for those who love wood and the special tools that have evolved over the past thousand years to create both useful and artistically beautiful creations that can certainly be in the realm of museum quality pieces reflecting our times and enhancing our standard of living..

August’s OCWA meeting took place at Anderson International for a second year running due to annual renovations at the Tustin Senior Center. Thank you very much, Jim Anderson, once again.

Or guest speaker, Eric Mortensen, is a fourth generation builder, being able to document his great-grandfather being a builder of houses in Denmark. Working in his father’s business in Washington State, Eric learned from the ground up, literally, doing everything from foundation forms, to surveying, to framing, ultimately to interior design, which led to his present forte of staircase building. He described himself as an artisan aspiring to artistry.

Mr. Mortensen moved to Southern California six years ago to form his own business, with emphasis on interior design specializing in staircases. He teaches part time at Cerritos College woodworking program. Mr. Mortensen brought some examples of the millwork he uses. His PowerPoint presentation consisted of many photos of early work, not-so-early work, present work and some designs for the future projects. He gave an interesting and educational presentation. It was apparent that he is held in

high esteem by his students present at the meeting and that he uses his intellect to design, execute and educate. He professed that to be a complete woodworker it is necessary to become a teacher as well.

The time has come the auctioneer said, to speak of mean things. Of saws and planes, and immaculate goblets. Of bowls and hammers and a gimlet or two. For the auctioneer has asked a dollar from thee will you say more? Maybe a pie, a cake or cookies even. What say you for a price? Surely a good time can be had by all but Scrooge.

So much for Carroll-ies. The October General Meeting of the OCWA, Thursday October 5, will be the annual auction of donated tools, shop equipment, art work, etc. Last year we had a large turnout of items for auction and a large number of bidders so come early. We will be able to start accepting items for auction at 5:00 PM. The auction will begin at 6:30 PM.

Item tags will be available at the September General and Turners meetings to identify the items you plan to offer. Additional tags will be available at the door prior to the auction.

Bidders Identification cards will be available at the door prior to the auction. Bring along your check books and/or plenty of cash. We will not be able to accept Credit Cards.

Silent auction space will be available in the kitchen serving area. Bidding cards will be available at the door. Half of the winning bid will go to the item owner and half to the OCWA.

Two bid Recorders will be located in the back of the room where winning bids will be recorded, tallies kept, and totals collected. Silent auction payouts will be made after all bid tallies are collected. Four spotters/handlers will assist the auctioneer. They will display the item being bid on, record the winning bid price and Bidders Identification number on the bottom of the Item Tag. This portion of the tag will be delivered to the Recorders. The item, if small enough, will be given to the bidder. Large items may be collected after the auction. Bidders are requested to record the item numbers they have won on the backs of their Bidders Identification card.

This month I shipped 250 pens and we are about half way through the last order of 500 pen kits so will need to order more kits soon.

There will be plenty kits available at our next meeting so don’t be bashful about signing out kits.

I owe a GREAT BIG thank you to the following people who helped me pay for the last 500 pen kits: Jim Anderson, Ed Smet, John Callos, Larry & Karen Gerber and everyone else who put donations in the helmet who’s names I didn’t get. Bless you ALL from our troops and me.
