lationship. This cross-sectional, descriptive-

correlational, pilot study used the NICU

Family Needs Inventory and the modified

Needs Met Inventory to rate needs state-

ments on an attitudinal scale. The invento-

ries evaluated psychosocial needs in the cate-

gories of assurance, proximity, information,

comfort and support. Twenty-four parents of

preterm infants (n = 14) and 16 neonatal

nurses participated in the study.

The results showed no statistically signifi-

cant difference in how parents and nurses

reported parental needs in terms of im-

portance. Differences were observed be-

tween the ratings of the top ten needs that

were identified by parents and nurses. Sta-

tistically significant differences were ob-

served in the perception of needs that are

considered met. No correlation between pa-

rental needs and illness severity was detect-

ed.

Implications for practice includes the rec-

ommendation for parental needs assessment

as a part of routine practice on their infant’s

admission to the NICU, enhanced nurse’s

understanding and evaluation of individual

parent’s needs and the integration of mental

health nurse liaison to support parents.

of the abbreviation – CNS-ON - makes it easier to recognize us right away as CNS in Ontario. We are working at decreasing confusion. During the incor-poration process, we were able to select the follow-ing abbreviations CNS-C / ICS-C, for clarification and for visibility to represent the national CNS as-sociation.

Sincerely,

RN, CNS; TCC, DMD, MN, PhD (Nursing) Clinical Nurse Specialist in Palliative Care, Sudbury, ON.

Parents’ and nurses’ perspective on pa-rental needs in the neonatal intensive care: Association with illness severity

Research investigating the psychosocial needs

of parents in the neonatal intensive care (NICU)

is limited. The purpose of this study was to in-

vestigate parents’ and registered nurses’ per-

spectives on the psychosocial needs of parents,

the extent to which those needs are viewed as

met; and to understand the association between

parental needs and the infant’s illness severity

for parents with preterm infants that are born

before 32 weeks gestation, in the first 10 days

of hospitalization to the NICU.

King’s conceptual systems and theory of goal

attainment provided the framework for this

study as the concepts of personal, interpersonal

and social systems are inherent in the NICU en-

vironment and specifically the nurse-parent re-

NACNS – March 2016 conference in Philadelphia, USA.

Paul-André Gauthier represented us at that conference. He is with NACNS President Sharon Horner, PhD, RN, MC-CNS, FAAN

Carole Caron Becoming a Clinical Nurse Specialist has enabled me to research, implement, revise and sustain best practices that support patients, their families and our healthcare stakeholders. It is a role that truly reflects all that Nursing represents with opportuni-ties to continuously improve the care that we pro-vide for our communities. Furthermore, I have also been invited to join an Expert Panel with the MOHLTC to look at current practices in LTC facil-ities to decrease readmissions to the hospital. It was felt that a nursing expert opinion (CNS) would be of value to the panel. How exciting is that! I will keep you posted.

Victoria Smye Although no longer practicing as a Clinical Nurse Specialist (currently, I am a researcher/educator in academia), I remain a strong advocate for the role. For example, it is my conviction that the power and exceptional capacity of nursing to shape healthy public policy and practice and thus influence health outcomes rests in our ability to build on the unique capacities of all nurses as well as to promote nurses as leaders in practice, whatever the practice do-main. CNSs are well prepared to support this en-deavor alongside other advanced practice nursing colleagues; this, of course, to support positive health outcomes – individuals, families, communi-ties and populations.

FYI—numbers: • We have maintained a minimum of 250 mem-bers (RNs) over the past years. We do not have any undergrad nursing students. For ex.

ο For Oct. 31, 2011 : 250 RNs

ο For Oct. 31, 2012 : 251 RNs

ο For Oct. 31, 2013 : 262 RNs

ο For Oct. 31, 2014 : 300 RNs !!! Done.

ο For October 2015 : 270 RNs.

ο For 2015-2016 :  July 2016: 273 + 2 award recipients– (275).

We have been successful in maintaining a constant number of members despite the turbulence in the nursing profession. Also, it means that we have enough members to receive a group discount by RNAO. Following our requests, RNAO home of-fice refused to recognise us as a group member for group discount ($), despite their policy in place.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In May 2016
Nursing Student Awards were given to CNS-MN Student studying in Ontario. We have contacted all the universities in Ontario asking them to send us the information regarding the MN /M.Sc.N. / M.Sc. (nursing) about their CNS program—we are still awaiting more information. They received a certificate, a key chain, and we added them to the list of members:
 University Western Ontario recipient : –Max Besworth, RN.  York University recipient : –Ingrid Dresher, RN.
Congratulations to all !
