The success of Calgary as a whole relies on thriving communities:

Communities as places where people can live now, regardless of income or stage of life. Communities that appeal to growing youth and provide the right amenities for a mature and aging population. Communities that attract new people and investments to our city.

Our great communities are growing more inclusive, with more housing options. They are growing more environmentally responsible, as more people live closer to amenities and services.

Calgarians needs are changing - that should be reflected in the community we live in now and the one we want to live in years from now.

Chinese (Lunar) New Year CelebrationDid you know that a sixth of the world’s population cel-ebrates Chinese New Year? This year, the beautiful lan-terns, red envelopes, and dancing dragons (all of which are used to celebrate this holiday) will not be present. However, that does not have to stop individual house-holds from starting to celebrate at home on February 12.

A new animal is celebrated every year – The 12-year Chi-nese zodiac is based on the system of stars, in which certain dates and years are considered unlucky. Each lunar cycle is represented by an animal: rat, ox, tiger, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. This year’s ani-mal is the Ox. Oxen are valuable animals because they are hard workers in the background, honest, and earnest. They are low key and never look for praise, they think logically and are great leaders.

Fireworks are typically launched on the first day of the Lu-nar New Year to frighten away the Nian, a lion-like mythical creature believed to have stalked and eaten villagers. Take the opportunity during this quiet downtime to research more about Chinese New Year at www.culturalcentre.ca and learn how you can celebrate individually as well.

Famous Valentine’s Day Quotes:“I am single on Valentine’s Day because I have not yet met someone who can handle all of my awesome”.

“I love you every day, not just on Valentine’s Day”.

“Will you be my valentine? That was a rhetorical question, you have no choice we’re married”.

“True friends are like diamonds; bright, beautiful, valuable, and like diamonds, always sparkle”.

With Love from HVCA

Hello, Scout families and our local community. What an interesting and challenging year we have just come through. As we re-start for 2021, we have moved to on-line meetings, however, as soon as the restrictions have been lifted, our plan is to get back outdoors exploring and enjoying nature. Registration for 2021 is now open and if you or your child has been looking at joining the scouting movement, now is a great time to do that.

Back in the fall, our groups made the most of the nice weather and had outdoor meetings through all of Sep-tember, October, and November. This coming year, our sections are looking forward to some really fun and excit-ing activities. The Beavers started the year with a PJ party and fort building. In February, they will be making and delivering valentines for veterans and seniors. The Cubs started the year off with a virtual campfire, and both the Cubs and Scouts are looking forward to working on some personal achievement and outdoor badges online as a group until we are able to return to outdoor meetings.

Thank you to everyone that has supported us this past fall with our drop off bottle drive and with your purchase of Scout Coffee. With your help, the youth in your community have had the opportunity to have some awesome experienc-es and go places that they may have never thought possible.

By now, our 2021 is well underway. With luck, the tem-perature is cold enough that we have been enjoying our favourite winter activities, but not so cold that February has frozen out our fun. In either case, February is the one month in the year when our changeable weather can make the shortest month feel like it is either zooming by or dragging on forever.

The new moon this month is February 12, and that marks the start of the Lunar New Year for those who are observing or celebrating during the first part of the month. For folks celebrating and observing the event, the HVCA sends our best wishes for a happy and pros-perous new year! Although celebrations this year will probably be much different than in the past, we can all take a moment to think about those things we are thankful for, and our hopes for the next year.

During more normal years, we would be reminding you of our annual community Winter Festival. This year, with a smaller Board year and everything else on the go, the Winterfests we are used to are not happening. We are working to be ready to get together as a community as soon as we can with a large event, and will keep you in-formed, using our Facebook pages and bulletin boards, of what, where, and when that event will occur. In the meantime, we will cross-promote other online or in-person activities that are happening that we are aware of from residents and other nearby communities. We on the Board encourage you to keep following the provin-cial and city health requirements and guidelines as you participate in the activities important to your well-being.

For your HVCA Board, the business that is next most top-of-mind for us is our park space and playground re-vitalization. With a vendor selected for the playground work at Hidden Hills Way, our subcommittees have com-menced the next round of planning and fundraising. The goal is to raise $11,000 to ensure that our planning part-ners and granting agencies have a strong foundation for working with us to get the work done according to plan. Our website at www.H2spaces.org has more details.

Given the current situation, the Board is working on new ways to make this essential activity happen for our not-for-profit business, when the people we serve cannot get together in groups. One idea we are considering

is a drive-through donation event, where residents and neighbours can drop off items to donate, and members can receive a small thank you gift or coupon for their donation. If you’d like to join the planning, email [email protected], and if you’d like to volunteer in some way, email [email protected]. As soon as we have more details, we will let you know.

For now, we hope that you are enjoying the weather, staying safe and healthy, and finding moments of joy in your life and the lives of those around you. In the spirit of the season, I am very thankful that my community has people eager to take care, participate, and help make things better for all our residents and neighbours, and I’m looking forward to better times ahead for all of us.

VICE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

H2 SPACES UPDATE

The HVCA, in collaboration with the City and Parks Foundation Calgary, has been working towards revitalizing the park space on Hidden Hills Way. We are currently in the final stages of vendor selection. If the project team can secure enough financial funding and enough volunteers, this space will be revitalized in the fall of 2021. A taxable donation link is available on the H2 Spaces website at www.h2spaces.org. Please contact [email protected] if you have any questions or can help to lend a hand!

Hidden Valley Community Association Membership

by Joel Nielsen Prairie Winds 4-H Club ReporterOver the month of December, 4-H Alberta offered all members a vir-tual way to have fun each day in December. The “Dashing Through December” challenge was located on Google classroom, and each day new activities were listed for us to complete. It began with a 4-H quiz

to see how much we knew. I thought it was pretty cool because I learned things that I didn’t know before. For example, I learned that the Southern 4-H Region had the most clubs in Alberta with 50, and our Calgary Region is

second with 46 clubs. There are currently 296 clubs in Al-berta and approximately 4540 members! I also learned that 4-H was founded in Alberta in 1917. Several other mem-bers from our club participated in this provincial activity and agreed that it was terrific to have something fun to do since extra-curricular and in-person activities were not possible, and we couldn’t plan to meet up with friends. A couple of my favourite challenges were to have a “Family Game Night” and to “Make a Meal for Your Family”. During our family game night, we played several different games and had fun spending time together, with ‘Catch Phrase’ and ‘Crib’ being the most popular choices. Another family in our club enjoyed playing ‘Codenames’ together. For the “Make a Meal” challenge, we made perogies together and everyone thought they were delicious! Another member in our club made eggs, cauliflower, and rice, as well as deli-cious looking crepes! With our 4-H year still being so differ-ent, this was a great way to end 2020 as we stayed home with our families.

The Great Snow Fall of 2020Well, its official, December 23 was indeed the greatest snowfall of 2020! With up to 40 cm’s in Calgary, and at least 70 cm’s in other parts of southern Alberta. This was the largest snow dump our City has seen since October 2018. I must admit, I thought it was delightful! The kids couldn’t wait to get outside to build snow tunnels. Avid outdoorspeople couldn’t wait to slap on the cross-coun-try skis, snowshoes, or toboggans.

For the first time in months, community members joined together to help each other out; shovelling driveways and cars out from mounds of cold, delicious, fluffy snow! Neighbours donned masks and helped to push cars out. It may have been a nuisance for some being one day before Christmas Eve, but at the end of the day, it was a friendly reminder for us to stay indoors, keep warm, and to enjoy the fresh fallen snow just in time for the holidays!

Sadly though, some people weren’t as safe or snuggly warm indoors. Some people had to go shopping on foot. Some people couldn’t cross the street, the snow so deep that they kept falling. Some drivers couldn’t be bothered to stop their vehicle and help those walking or those who had

Get Ready for our Community Clean UpEvery year the HVCA hosts a “Spring Cleanup” event. This is an opportunity for community members to rid their yards and households of unwanted items, as well as donate reusable items to various charities. This past year, our cleanup event was cancelled due to the pandemic. Over the course of the year, there has been an enormous amount of garbage laying around our community; face masks, rubber gloves, trash from our local 7-11, empty cylinders from the local canna-bis store. Not only does garbage pose as a hazard to all of our wild and domestic wildlife, but it contributes to an unhealthy and unpleasant looking community. This spring, the HVCA will be implementing operation #HVCACLEANUP challenge! A community challenge for household families, school classrooms, community organizations, and local businesses.

Stay tuned for more exciting details!

fallen in the middle of a crosswalk. Some people couldn’t be bothered to shovel their neighbour’s sidewalk, even though they knew that they couldn’t do it themselves.

So thank you to jolly old ‘Jack Frost” who made this past years winter holiday so special. Thank you to all the neighbours who came together to help one another out and allowed us all to feel a little bit “normal” again. Special thanks to all our community snow angels!

If you are in need of a “Snow Angel” please reach out and contact [email protected].

Fundraising – Rink BoardsDo you ever wonder why the rink boards in Hidden Val-ley are blank? Well, that is because we renovated the rink a few years ago, and we still have space for corpo-rate advertising.

Do you have a penchant for reaching out to businesses to raise funds for HVCA programs using the rink boards? Then look no further than here. We already have a rink board advertising process/guideline set up, so if you would like to help us out over the short term - i.e. this year- to find businesses to advertise with us, please consider joining the board as a fundraising director or coordinator. No previous experience necessary. The rink gets used quite a bit with basketball players and ball hockey in the warm months, as well as ice hockey in the winter, so advertising would be very effective in this space. Please email [email protected] for further information.

It is a privilege to work with your community to drive change and is an incredibly rewarding experience. If you are interested in the local decision-making process, sharing your experience and knowledge, or addressing key issues in your community, I would encourage you to run as an election candidate.

Typically, there are many different roles one can take on when volunteering for a campaign. These include door-knocking, distributing literature, building and installing signs, assisting with an event or the campaign office, and fundraising. Preparing for COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution and Research: The Alberta government is preparing to distribute COVID-19 vaccines. Vaccinations will be provided free of charge and are not mandatory. As well, the Alberta government is investing $20 million over four years to The Li Ka Shing Applied Virology Institute (AVI) at the University of Alberta to accelerate world-class science, to help combat COVID-19 and related diseases. The funding will accelerate leading-edge research and commercialization of pharmaceutical and vaccine treatments. The pandemic has demonstrated more than ever, the need for health research and domestic development of treatments for illnesses.

Provincial Administrative Penalties Act and Changes to the Police Act: Impaired driving is unacceptable, and penalties for impaired driving are getting tougher. The Provincial Administrative Penalties Act will allow police to administer stricter impaired driving penalties on the road. Under the new impaired driving laws, significant penalties will be handed out roadside, with fines of up to $2,000. Most first-time impaired driving charges will be handled out of Court, through a new website called SafeRoads Alberta. This approach will reduce the burden on our Court and police resources, while protecting the safety of people on our roads. As well, last November, the Alberta government acted to address the concerns raised around policing in Alberta and banned carding.

Physician Assistants Improve Access to Health Care: Physician assistants will be recognized as regulated health-care professionals beginning April 1, 2021. Regulating the profession means that physician assistants will adhere to standards for competency, safety, and ethics, like other regulated health professionals in the province.

Alberta Removes Licence Plate Stickers: Effective January 1, 2021, Albertans will no longer require expiry stickers on their licence plates, as the province moves toward adopting reflective plates.

I want to thank my constituents who have reached out to me, and I have thoroughly enjoyed our discussions. Please know that I will be available by telephone throughout the pandemic. As always, it is my great honour to serve as your MLA.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

MLA Calgary – Beddington Hon. Josephine Pon

Dear Constituents,

The Alberta Legislature is set to begin its Spring Session this month, and I would like to provide you all with an update on issues important to you and our community. I am proud to serve our community as your MLA and represent you and your families in the Government of Alberta!

As 2020 ended and we began 2021, I had the opportunity to mail a hard copy of my Year in Review newsletter to every home in Calgary-Beddington. We accomplished much during a very difficult year, and we have continued to support each other to overcome the difficulties of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Also last month, I was happy to update our small businesses in Calgary-Beddington with all of the supports available to them from the Government of Alberta and the Government of Canada. Small businesses in our riding have been hit especially hard, and our government has been there for them every step of the way. Please ensure to support local where you can!

As of January 6, Alberta is leading all major provinces in COVID-19 vaccinations. 65 percent of the vaccines we have received have been administered to vulnerable Albertans and healthcare workers. 33,864 doses of the vaccine have been administered in Alberta. This works out to 765.8 doses per 100,000 Albertans. Our province’s phased approach to vaccination prioritizes healthcare workers and our most vulnerable. Eligibility to receive the COVID-19 vaccine will continue to expand as more vaccines arrive in Alberta.

As was announced in December, rapid testing has been expanded to include vulnerable Albertans, and has begun at long-term care and designated supportive living facilities. Rapid testing has also been expanded to homeless shelters and centers in both Calgary and Edmonton.

I wish you all a Happy Valentine’s Day, as we continue to navigate this pandemic together.
