From the Chief Executive officer
Bert Schmidt President & Chief Executive Officer
Inside this issue
remember reading something Mark Twain once said: “In the Spring,
I have counted one hundred and thirty-six different kinds of weather, all in the space of twenty-four hours.”
He may not have ever lived in Virginia, but he might as well have been describing Hampton Roads, especially during the past few months. I can’t count the number of times I’ve used both the heat and the air conditioner in the car on the same day!
As you’re reading this column, you’ve probably already seen some sure signs of Spring, but as I’m writing it – at the beginning of February – there’s still some left over snow on the ground. And that brings me to the message I want to share with you this month: like all of the school systems throughout Hampton Roads, and many businesses, shops and other organizations, WHRO was officially closed for three days. We treasure our staff, and would not require them to venture out in dangerous conditions.
That said, we’re still a 24/7 operation, serving countless thousands of people who depend on us on a daily basis, for news, music, entertainment and companionship – and in cases like the recent snowstorms, for information vital to the safety and health of the entire community. I am incredibly proud of our “essential personnel” – the on-air staff, some of whom even walked
to WHRo in the snow, to ensure that both news reports and regular programming remained intact; as well as the engineering and master control employees who were on the job as well, making sure the equipment was uncompromised. Their dedication is a testament to the value they place on our members, viewers and listeners, and the pride they take in their own work.
I also want to say a special thank you to the staff members who were able to – and did – make it in to the station despite our “closed” status. Many of them said their streets had been cleared early on, so they knew they could get here safely.
And I’d be remiss if I didn’t also thank the employees who anticipated the closing, and left the station with work they could do at home.
I’ve said it before: I have a great staff here at WHRo and WHRV. They work hard; they work with pride; and they work with a genuine sense of service to you. I’m delighted for this opportunity to thank them publicly.
A publication for the WHRo community in Hampton Roads, VA
We appreciate the support of all of our members, and thank each and every one of you!

ow that Sherlock and Downton Abbey have finished their runs for this season, it’s time to welcome back three other series from across the pond
that our viewers have embraced. Starting on March 30th, Sunday nights will once again have a decidedly British accent!
At 8 o’clock, season three of Call the Midwife takes viewers back to london’s East End in 1959 – the eve of the Swinging Sixties, when the winds of change swept through England, and the residents of nonnatus House found themselves facing momentous changes of their own. For those of you who like on-line quizzes, you can find out which midwife you most resemble by going to pbs.org/call-the-midwife/about/quizzes/which-midwife-are-you-quiz/
Following at 9pm, viewers glide seamlessly from the East End of the 60s to the unfashionable end of oxford Street in 1909, as Jeremy Piven returns as Mr. Selfridge, the flamboyant American entrepreneur and showman seeking to provide london’s shoppers with the ultimate merchandise and
the ultimate thrill. Reprising the opulence and excitement of Selfridges and the story of its founder – a man of exuberant, outsized, and as we have glimpsed, potentially dangerous appetite.
Finally, at 10pm, the return of The Bletchley Circle, a series that features fascinating female characters and superb writing. The season opens with former Bletchley Park girl Alice in prison awaiting trial for murder. Jean stands behind her innocence and tries to reunite the circle in an attempt to help one of their own. Susan is reluctant to get involved after her experience with the twisted serial killer Malcolm Crowley and the danger it posed to her family. lucy is now getting on well in a clerical job at Scotland Yard and keeping her head down, and Millie is working as a german translator. What unfolds in the four-part series will keep you on the edge of your seat!
once again, Brittania rules the (air)waves – at least on Sunday nights on WHRo TV15!

HRo joins public media stations from across the
country for a series of Community Town Halls as
part of the American graduate: let’s Make it Happen initiative to address America’s high school dropout crisis. The town hall events build upon the success of earlier Teacher Town Halls, while bringing together a broader group of community stakeholders, including businesses, parents, students, intervention and faith-based organizations in a town hall setting. The events have the goal of identifying the challenges students face beyond the classroom and moving forward community-based solutions that support students’ success in school.
last month, WHRo welcomed community stakeholders to the station for a lively town hall discussion moderated by Barbara Hamm lee, host and executive producer of Another View.
tune-in to WhrO tV-15 on monday, March 17th at 9 pm to watch the community town hall and learn what local
stakeholders think that the Hampton Roads community should do to keep more students in school and on the road to graduation.
Following the broadcast of the town hall stay tuned for Challenging Circumstances: The Dropout Crisis (10 pm) and Solutions to the Dropout Epidemic (10:30 pm). The two short documentaries highlight the challenges facing our young people and demonstrate what some local organizations are doing to combat the problem.
The numbers of young people who fail to graduate from high school every year has a negative impact on families, communities, and our country. Through the American graduate initiative, WHRo is telling the dropout story through the voices of teachers, students, parents, business and community leaders, and educators. By working together we can help our young people stay on the path to a high school diploma. – Bert Schmidt, WHRO President & CEO

n March 8th, hundreds of middle and high school students from schools across the region will gather at old Dominion
university to demonstrate their skills in various computer applications and programs at the Senior great Computer Challenge. Teams of up to five students will compete in categories such as Desktop Publishing, Music Composition, Web Design and Video Editing.
The great Computer Challenge (gCC) is a joint project of WHRo, the Consortium for Interactive Instruction and old Dominion university that provides an opportunity to recognize student achievement, foster teamwork and introduce students to a college environment. Even now, in its 29th year, it’s as popular as ever.
The gCC teams spend months preparing and, with support from their teacher coaches, come ready to take on the challenge. They can practice with sample problems and previous winning solutions, but they don’t receive their challenges until the day of the competition – and then they work within a very strict timeframe.
once the teams complete their solutions, they head for lunch while the judges evaluate their work. Judges include old Dominion university computer science professors, engineering lecturers and video production staff.
later in the afternoon, everyone will reconvene at oDu’s Webb Center for the awards ceremony. Parents and teacher coaches join the students to help cheer on the winning teams as they take to the stage to receive their medals and trophies.
This year, the Junior great Computer Challenge will be held at oDu on May 3rd. In this competition, students in grades K-5 will have the opportunity to show off their skills in categories ranging from graphic Arts to Internet Scavenger Hunt.
You can find out more about the great Computer Challenge at education.whro.org/gcc. or, learn about volunteer opportunities at the great Computer Challenge at education.whro.org/gccvolunteer.

Classical music abounds with works celebrating spring. There are pianos pieces by Mendelssohn, songs by Schubert, a symphony by Schumann, and an amiable violin sonata by the nature-loving Beethoven. Adding to the anticipation will be the fact that spring comes early this year – at 12:57 PM on March 20th. Tune in on that day and enjoy the sounds of the new season.
THE EVER-FLOWING BROOk FridAy March 21 • Whrv 89.5 FM
In a play on words, Beethoven said of Bach, “not Brook but Sea should be his name.” (Bach is german for “brook”). other composers have expressed similar sentiments, and the public is not far behind in its praise. Believe it or not, such was not always the case. Immediately after his death, Bach’s music fell into semi-obscurity before being resurrected by Mendelssohn and others in the early 19th century. Today, Johann Sebastien Bach is recognized as one of art’s towering geniuses. on the day recognized as his birthday, March 21, we’ll again offer proof of that. Tune in and immerse yourself.
