Peninsula K-8 School Family Newsletter Volume 14, Issue 7 May 2016 Caldera News Caldera's Saturday workshops have been filled with photography, digital storytelling and crafts and we are looking forward to participating in the St. John's parade and the Kenton Street Fair on May 14th and 15th! You'll find us there with cameras and clipboards and a brand new shiny mobile photo booth, collecting the stories of you and your neighbors! We loved working with Ms. Shippy, photographing the students and their families with their imaginative clay creations during the Day of the Child/Dia de Los Ninos celebration at the end of April. It was wonderful to see and meet so many families and create portraits and six-word Object Stories with them. Look for their contribution to the "Our Peninsula Story" exhibit at the beginning of June. The Caldera 3rd and 4th grade students recently interviewed and photographed Lee Garrett and were excited to learn so many details about his interesting life, from his early resilience as the only black child in his school for the blind, to playing with Elvis Presley in the cotton fields where both their families worked, to meeting and befriending Michael Jackson when Michael was a young boy, to being one brother in a family of 30 children! We all wished his dear mother, who will turn 100 in September, a very happy Mother's Day indeed! Lee Garett-- YOU ROCK OUR WORLD! We look forward to some end of the year fun with our Peninsula Community and celebrating the work with all of you at the annual Caldera Showcase held at Open School (corner of N. Emerald and N. Lombard) on the evening of June 1st from 5:00 to 8:00!

FromtheStudentManagementSpecialistDear Peninsula Families: In my role as Student Management Specialist, I come into contact with students in a variety of ways. Sometimes, I see kids when they are struggling to overcome a challenge. It’s easy to get bogged down in the details of these difficult situations. My goal is to always keep perspective by noticing the acts of kindness, good sportsmanship, and creativity that abound. Far more students receive Panther Paws than behavior referrals at our school, and we, as educators, are grateful that you parents and guardians have entrusted your wonderful, talented, amazing and precious children to our care. This has been a tumultuous few weeks at Peninsula due to the news that we will be a K-5 next year instead of a K-8. Whatever your position on this move, we will certainly miss our upperclassmen and the ways that they enriched our school. We are proud of the fact that the Oregon Department of Education has consistently rated Peninsula as a Level 4 (out of 5) school, which distinguishes us as a leader among neighborhood schools. Peninsula has found not only a way to survive as a K-8 but to thrive. Over the next few weeks, we will begin our usual end-of-the-year activities. (See the calendar for more details.) On June 1, I will be taking the Self-Managers on a field trip to Peninsula Park to see the rose gardens and have a picnic. This will be from about 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. We always need chaperones, so if you’re interested or available to join us for this fun outing, we’d love to have you. I’ll be sending home more information with Self-Managers. As we move forward with these activities, we’re trying to be sensitive to the excitement, nervousness, and sometimes fear that goes along with our students moving from one grade to the next or to an entirely different school. You can support your child by talking to them about these changes and helping them realize that change is a part of life. There’s a lot of information on our school website, and I’m happy to answer any questions if I can. In the third quarter, we celebrated students for their “inquisitiveness.” In the fourth quarter our focus will be on students who are “dynamic” and “excellent.” Thanks for all you do to support our great school and for entrusting us with your amazing kids. All the best, Trevor Parker Student Management Specialist
