Salutations Division 17!

It brings me much relief, but also much sadness to publish my final newsletter. It has been a great honor to meet all of you, and a pleasure to have served with all of you. Words cannot explain how grateful I am to have had such dili-gent, and wonderful officers with the passion to serve their communities. We have had our bumps along the road, but we always managed to overcome them together.

I know a lot of you don’t read my newsletters, but if you’re going to read at least one, please take the time to read through this issue. If elections have already been held, have them read my Lieutenant Governor elect Iskander Turan’s introduction letter! They will be working with him the next service year! If you are attending District Con-vention, there is A LOT of important information and helpful tips on how to survive and enjoy the event to the full-est! Lastly, to all my current officers, my farewell letter is included in this issue.

Seeing as I am a senior, I will be off to college next year! I truly hope to stay in touch with as many of you as possible. If you ever have any questions, comments, concerns, or you’re just looking for a nice chat, please do not hesitate to contact me via phone, email, or Facebook!

Every 38 minutes, Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wish of a child diagnosed with a life-threatening medi-cal condition in the United States and its territories. This foundation believes that a wish experience can be a game-changer. From granting trips to exotic destina-tions to arranging celebrity lunches, this organization goes above and beyond in making sick children happy. They truly make a difference in the lives of children and their families, and that is what the Kiwanis family believes in.

How can my club help Make-A-Wish? Regarding dona-tions, Make- A- Wish accepts money from single dona-tions, online fundraising pages, and monthly sponsor-ships. Hold a fundraiser or set aside money in your club’s budget to donate. They also accept unused air-line miles. A club could also attend or promote fund-raisers arranged by different chapters of the foundation. If you know an adult that would like to volunteer, he/she can help as a wish granter, office worker, translator, fundraiser, speaker or event staff member. Please visit http://wish.org/ or contact your lieutenant governor with any questions.

Key Club International has recently teamed up with The Thirst Project, an organization focused on creating wells for clean drinking water in impoverished nations around the globe. Over 748 million people do not have access to safe, clean drinking water, and nearly 4,100 children die every day from diseases caused by contaminated water. That is almost one child every 21 seconds. Water-born diseases re-sulting from contaminated water consist of eighty percent of all global diseases, causing more than 2.2 million deaths each year. Constructing a well to provide water for all of these people seems like it would cost an incredible amount of money, right? Well it doesn’t! For only $7,800, a well can be built to in-definitely serve a community clean and accessible water. Workers need only to reach the water that already existing in aquifers one hundred to three hundred feet under-ground. How can my club help give people all over the world access to clean drinking water? Individuals and groups have the opportunity to pick an area for their funds to be donated; a simple monetary donation builds a well and builds a future for an entire community. Your club can help by holding a fundraiser to aid in collecting funds, or by setting aside some money from your club’s budget. For more information, visit http://www.thirstproject.org/ or contact your lieutenant governor with any questions you may have about The Thirst Project.

Hi!

My name is Iskander Turan and it is my honor to be serving you as your Lieutenant Governor in the ser-

vice year of 2015-2016 for Division 17! I am currently a junior at Tenafly High School and have been involved

in Key Club for the past three years. However, it was not long ago that I truly found my passion and joy in Key

Club and that is something I wish to help spread throughout our division. I was born in the UK and lived there

for the first thirteen years of my life. I like to think I have a combination of both English and American culture

and I hope to share that with you!

Among many things I have gained, Key Club has most importantly taught me the true meaning of ser-

vice and helping others in my community. This ultimately inspired me to run for the Lieutenant Governor posi-

tion because it would allow me to actively take part in an international organization which directly influences

the lives of my community and even the lives of the world. I am so grateful for having the opportunity to meet

wonderful fellow high-school students who share the same interests and hobbies that I do and I cannot wait to

meet you all!

As your Lieutenant Governor, I will be essentially acting as a liaison between the club-level and the dis-

trict-level. I look forward to making the next year as amazing as my prior years with Key Club have been.

Unlike common belief, Key Club is not a club that builds keys or is only a great way to look good on your col-

lege application. It is rather a great way to find out more about yourself while you serve your community and

interact with others.

Although Key Club does preoccupy a large portion of my life, I do have other interests and hobbies!

Namely, I enjoy playing soccer and I am a huge supporter of Chelsea Football Club. I actively participate in my

Chemistry Club where I research and take part in competitions. I also love learning the French language and en-

joy reciting French poetry. This is just a glimpse of my personality but I am impatient to get to know you all as

soon as possible and to embark on one of the most distinct years of our lives.

Yours in Caring and Service,

Iskander Turan

When is DCON and what time should I get there?

District Convention takes place from March 27th-March 29th. You can get there any time you like, but registration does not officially open until 1pm. The first session will begin at 5pm. I recommend for your club to be at the ho-tel no later than 3-4pm, so that you have time to sign up for any contests, get registered, go to rooms, and then come back downstairs for the first session in business pro-fessional attire.

When you first walk in… there will probably be either signs or people to guide you to where you need to go. Your advisor and the president, or highest ranking officer present, will go to the registra-tion tables to hand in all forms, and pick up all materials necessary for attendees (name tags, room keys, etc). There is a schedule and a map all available in a booklet that you’re going to receive. THIS WILL BE YOUR BEST FRIEND, AND YOUR TRUSTY GUIDE. PLEASE DO NOT LOSE IT.

Dress to Impress

During sessions and workshops, everyone is required to be in business professional attire. Males will be in suits, and females have a larger variety. Ladies can wear a nice dress with a blazer, professional skirts, or dress pants. Try to aim for more comfortable shoes, because you will be walking around a lot. During free time, the Friday night dance, Eliminate Walk, and Sunday morning session, you are allowed to dress casually.

Contests: a lot of you have already submitted the

necessary applications and requirements for pre-judged contests such as Major Emphasis, and the AARF, but there are contests that you can sign up for right when you walk in! There is the talent show, impromptu essay, and oratorical. The Impromptu Essay takes place during workshops, so if you choose to participate, you will be missing workshops. Oratorical and Talent Show both take place during free time/House of Delegates. If you are a delegate for your club, you can still participate in these contests, you will simply go first. For more specific information, check back to the District Mailings!

Sessions: There is a main room where the entire dis-

trict gathers for sessions. During this time, we will all be sitting by division. Throughout each session, there will be motivational speeches from inspirational people, an-nouncement of winners of contests, and opportunities to win the coveted SPIRIT STICK! So be sure to be loud, proud, and show how much you love your LTG *hint hint. There will be a total of approximately 5 sessions over the weekend, and it is MANDATORY to attend! Please do your best to be on time, and stay awake! We try to make it as entertaining as possible.

Dances: We, the New Jersey District Board, believe

in the saying, “work hard, play hard”. Throughout the weekend, two dances will take place; one on Friday eve-ning, and another Saturday evening. The dance on Fri-day evening is a casual, themed dance. Come decked out in your Harry Potter gear! The dance Saturday evening is the Yule Ball, and much more formal. Throughout the weekend, you will be able to place bids on any mem-ber of the District Board to see if you will win a dance with them Saturday night! Come dressed in formal wear; ladies, no cocktail dresses.

Farewell Letter LikShin it P10

Salutations Division 17~

This will probably be close to the last time I will be saying that for I will be passing on the greetings to my Lieutenant Governor elect, Iskander Turan. I hope you all read his introduction letter, and got to know him at least a little bit! It’s difficult to believe that the service year is already over, and for some of you, I didn’t even get to work with you all year. I would like to thank each and every one of you for all the hard work you put into your individual clubs, and into the division as a whole. When something goes well, the Lieutenant Governor is credited, but in real-ity, this service year would not have been as successful if it weren’t for all you. YOUR passion and diligence inspired and pushed me to give it my all...at that was supposed to be my job!

Together, we were able to accomplish so much, and I could not be any more proud. For the first time in years, the ENTIRE division is dues paid. For the first time in years, the ENTIRE division has submitted 100% CMRFs. For the first time in years, more than one club was able to attend RTCs, Fall Rally, and now District Con-vention. We’ve surpassed so many limits that we can’t stop here. To the clubs who have yet to hold elections, en-courage strong members to run because the heart of the division lies not in the LTG, but in the officers and mem-bers. Bergen County Academies will be joining our division early in the 2015-2016 service year, and I hope you will all give them a warm welcome by guiding them into the Key Club flow.

I don’t want to make this letter too long, so I’ll finish off with one final suggestion. If you have a love for ser-vice, don’t be afraid to hold as many projects as possible. Of course, don’t go crazy, but don’t be afraid to seek out opportunities to serve your community, no matter how small. It’s not the size of the event that matters (although it is nice), but rather, the size of the hearts of the people who are serving. Something as simple as creating Mother’s Day cards for the sick mothers in the hospital is more than enough to create a large impact. Never lose your passion and never be afraid to aim high!

It’s been a SHINSANE year; full of laughs and tears, but I’m grateful that it was spent with all of you.

Thank you ECLC Ho-Ho-Kus

Thank you Emerson

Thank you Fort Lee

Thank you High Tech

Thank you North Bergen

Thank you Secaucus

Thank you Tenafly

Even though the service year is ending, I hope to stay in touch with as many of you as possible! I really do love hearing for you :)

Yours in caring and service,
