AJS Newsletter Vol. XXXIII, num. 09 www.atlantajaguarsociety.org September, 2012 From our President By Ken Carr, Acting President XJ LUXURY All Jaguars share the common characteristics of styling and performance but in addition their sedans (er…saloons) have always exuded that feel of luxury embodied by rich leather upholstery (not to be confused with the “Corinthian leather” of bygone Chryslers), polished wood panels, deep carpets, etc. These sumptuous details were particularly evident in the old Vanden Plas models. The current XJ line raises luxury to a new level, not only retaining and enhancing the traditional craftsmanship of the past but supplementing it with high tech features that completely pamper driver and passengers. Reviews of the 2012 XJ have appeared by coincidence this August in two Atlanta newspapers, the AJC and the Johns Creek Herald (thanks Fran). The XJ comes in three 5.0 liter V- 8 versions of 385, 470 and 510 hp. The supercharged 510 hp version can accelerate from 0 to 60mph in just 4.2 seconds, reaching a speed of 114 mph at the quarter-mile, so there is no question that there is power and speed aplenty to satisfy Jaguar owner expectations. However, these reviews highlight the extraordinary new luxury features now available in the XJ line. For example, in a fully loaded XJ at $120K rear passengers can relax with a power sunshade, DVD screens and trays in front of seats that can recline, heat, massage…you name it! As the owner of an ancient 1998 XJL I enjoy the interior elegance of these cars but I am amazed how these new features redefine what luxury means. In summary, many fine competing marques in the same class may have better performance or more luxury than the XJ but in dollar-for-dollar value they cannot outshine the Jaguar package. The pool party at the beautiful Antonucci home was a great success with excellent participation by our members (the group picture around the pool by Lew’s panoramic camera says it all). As all the photos in this issue can attest, fun and friendship abounded. Our thanks go to Matt and Emily for hosting this event in the best tradition of AJS hospitality. From our President By Ken Carr, Acting President

XJ LUXURY

All Jaguars share the common characteristics

of styling and performance but in addition their

sedans (er…saloons) have always exuded that

feel of luxury embodied by rich leather

upholstery (not to be confused with the

“Corinthian leather” of bygone Chryslers),

polished wood panels, deep carpets, etc. These

sumptuous details were particularly evident in

the old Vanden Plas models. The current XJ line

raises luxury to a new level, not only retaining

and enhancing the traditional craftsmanship of

the past but supplementing it with high tech

features that completely pamper driver and

passengers.

Reviews of the 2012 XJ have appeared by

coincidence this August in two Atlanta

newspapers, the AJC and the Johns Creek Herald

(thanks Fran). The XJ comes in three 5.0 liter V-

8 versions of 385, 470 and 510 hp. The

supercharged 510 hp version can accelerate from

0 to 60mph in just 4.2 seconds, reaching a speed

of 114 mph at the quarter-mile, so there is no

question that there is power and speed aplenty to

satisfy Jaguar owner expectations. However,

these reviews highlight the extraordinary new

luxury features now available in the XJ line. For

example, in a fully loaded XJ at $120K rear

passengers can relax with a power sunshade,

DVD screens and trays in front of seats that can

recline, heat, massage…you name it! As the

owner of an ancient 1998 XJL I enjoy the

interior elegance of these cars but I am amazed

how these new features redefine what luxury

means.

In summary, many fine competing marques

in the same class may have better performance or

more luxury than the XJ but in dollar-for-dollar

value they cannot outshine the Jaguar package.

The pool party at the beautiful Antonucci

home was a great success with excellent

participation by our members (the group picture

around the pool by Lew’s panoramic camera

says it all). As all the photos in this issue can

attest, fun and friendship abounded. Our thanks

go to Matt and Emily for hosting this event in the

best tradition of AJS hospitality.

MSRP from $155,000. 510 HP 5.0 liter V8

2013 Jaguar Line-up

F-type: Details remain sketchy, but Jaguar’s

all new two-seat convertible will feature a

bonded and riveted aluminum unibody like those

of the XK and XJ. Under hood, expect the

company’s new supercharged 3.0-liter V-6,

tuned to produce 380 horsepower. In the interest

of fuel economy, the F-type will use an eight-

speed automatic and start-stop. This new Jag,

whose exterior is expected to mirror the stunning

C-X16 concept’s, gives the brand a bright star

around which the rest of its models can orbit

XF: To lower the price of entry and increase

fuel economy, Jaguar introduces two new

engines to the XF lineup. A direct-injection 2.0-

liter turbo four (shared with the Land Rover

Range rover Evoque) will make 240 horsepower.

Slotted above the four but below the V-8s is a

340-hp, 3.0-liter supercharged V-6. The 5.0-liter

V-8s, both supercharged and naturally aspired,

carry over. Every ’13 XF will get an eight-speed

automatic and start-stop; all-wheel drive will

likely become an option.

XJ: The XJ’s V-8s are joined by the 340-hp

V-6 shared with the XF. All XJs get the new

eight-speed automatic and start-stop. Expect an

all-wheel drive option for 2013, too. Also the

Ultimate XJ series will be unveiled.

Tech Tidbit: To expand its engine range,

Jaguar whacked two cylinders from its 5.0-liter

V-8 to create two new supercharged 3.0-liter V-

6s. Shared features are aluminum block and

head construction, direct injection, an Eaton

TVS-series supercharger, and variable-and

exhaust-valve timing. The V-6s have a higher

compression ratio, smaller bore and stroke

dimensions, stop-start, and two balance shafts.

The XF and XJ sedans use a 340-hp version of

this V-6; the all-new F-type roadster employs the

380-hp edition.

June’s Corner

Member News By June Mindrup, Health & Hospitality Director

New Member Department: A big welcome

to Vertis and Sidney Gleaton who have recently

joined our club. They own an Aston Martin DB-

7(1975, 1992 2-R-1, 2002-206, 2006 C-6

Corvette) MB-S500, 2002-911. Gee, but I hope I

got that right! Welcome aboard - we're happy to

have you join us.

Everybody, please keep Bob and Kim Daly

in your prayers. Kim, thank you for the progress

reports you are so faithfully providing. Bless you

for managing to provide all AJS'ers up to date

news when your days of being a care-giver keep

you so busy.

Marilyn Fry had emergency gall bladder

Surgery on August 22nd. She is at home now

recuperating nicely; however, this malady put a

glitch in their plans to go to Milwaukee,

Wisconsin to attend a nephew's wedding.

Marilyn, your timing wasn't so good!!!

Robert and Yera Kleiner will soon be leaving

on a 2-month cruise to Japan, China, South

Korea, New Guinea, Viet Nam, Australia and

Indonesia. Jeepers, that sounds like one

ambitious journey and we'll all be waiting to hear

about it when you return. Bon Voyage!

And this is certainly worth writing about.

Ken and Irene Carr celebrated their 10th

Wedding Anniversary on August 19th. Happy,

Happy Anniversary and may you celebrate many

more such occasions.

Lew George's sister evacuated "Mom" to

Huntsville, Alabama for Hurricane Isaac...and

there’s more. Lew's step-sister lost her home in

Houston, Texas when it burned down! The fire,

which started in the garage, went unnoticed as no

one was at home, until neighbors saw the smoke

and called the fire department.

Sheila and Paul Brower will be going to New

Orleans for several days to attend the Georgia

Association of Realtors Convention (she's Vice

President of this organization). Then they will be

going to Halifax, Nova Scotia to attend a Real

Estate Related Conference as Paul is Vice

Chairman of the Real Estate Commission. This

dynamo duo are always on the go.

Alan Talbott and Larry Walton with 12 other

motorcycle enthusiasts were cycling in the North

Georgia mountains...and...all 14 came upon a

Police Road Block. Yep, they were all arrested

and given speeding tickets. It took the cops 1 1/2

hours to write up the 14 tickets. Plan "A" is to go

to Court to try to get the fine reduced. Good

Luck with "Plan A".

On a sad note, Wil Sommer's younger

brother, Gordon D. Sommer, died August 8th in

Casper, Wyoming. Wil flew out to attend the

funeral which was held on the 17th of August.

Our condolences on your loss, Wil.

Don and Marlene Hart will be going to

Miami for 8 days. While there, they will meet

their friends from Switzerland.

Kathy and Glenn Michalski spent 5 days

sightseeing in Lima, Peru and visiting many

Mayan and Inca ruins. They even went on an

Amazon River Expedition for 10 days, deep into

the Amazon Basin and rain forests. Highlights of

the Amazon trip included swimming with

Amazon Pink River Dolphins. Also, in the river

while they were swimming with Red-bellied

Piranhas and Black Piranhas, but none of them

took any bites. Other highlights included seeing

flocks of parrots, parakeets, storks, herons,

vultures, Macaws and various monkeys, iguanas

and sloths. After such an adventurous trip, they

returned to Georgia for a short rest, then off to

spend a week in Hilton Head, South Carolina for

beach walking, relaxing and also visiting with

one of their cousins.

Marcia Lauria's sister from California was

here for a visit at the end of August. They had a

fun-filled 3 days visit which included a trip to

Asheville, North Carolina and a tour of the

Biltmore House.

Quiz for the month! (Q) What kind of motor

vehicles are in the Bible? (A) Jehovah drove

Adam and Eve out of the Garden in a "Fury".

(Q) And About "Triumph"? (A) David's

"Triumph" was heard throughout the land. Also,

probably a "Honda" was in the Bible because the

Apostles were all in one "Accord".

Drive to the Etowah

Indian Mounds

This drive will be north on Highway 75 to

Cartersville. The historic museum and mounds

are located about 6 miles west of town along the

banks of the Etowah River.

We will meet at 9:00 a.m. for coffee and

doughnuts in the parking lot of Chattahoochee

Technical College located just off highway 75 at

exit 278. You will see it just to the right of the

off ramp. The group will depart for Cartersville

at 9:30 a.m.

Please see the extended directions and GPS

information in the separate attached file.

We will be visiting an ancient Indian city that

was discovered by Hernando DeSoto in 1540.

The mounds were used between 900 and 1550

A.D. as a platform for the priest/chief, temples

and mortuary houses. The self- guided tour

starts at a history museum with artifacts and

short film. Then we will proceed on a ½ mile

Page 4: Vol. XXXIII, num. 09 ... · AJS Newsletter Vol. XXXIII, num. 09 September, 2012 From our President By Ken Carr, Acting President XJ LUXURY All Jaguars share the common characteristics

walking trail with which have informational

markers. This is a wonderful opportunity to

learn and see where these local natives lived over

1,000 years ago.

We will return to Cartersville at around

12:00 where we will have lunch at Longhorn

Steakhouse which offers salads and other lite

fare or a great steak dinner.

The cost for the museum and self- guided

tour is $4.00 and lunch is at your own expense.

RSVP Ted Anderson at:

[email protected] or call me at 770-

855-2894. We need your reservation by

September 12th

.

Following lunch, some of you may want to

consider visiting the Booth Western Art

Museum, just blocks from Longhorn. I have

been told that this is a “must see” exhibit,

admission for adults is $8.00 or $6.00 for

seniors. There are also several antique shops that

are also within blocks from the Booth Museum

and restaurant.

We hope you can attend!
