If Marcellin Champagnat, who founded the Marist Brothers nearly 200 years ago, was to have walked through the College on Tuesday night during our Cerise and Blue Open Night, I think he would have been suitably impressed and proud of what is being achieved at our school.

During Cerise and Blue we open our doors and let prospective parents, current Marist families, Old Boys, friends of the College and the wider public come and enjoy what makes St Augustine’s so special.

The evening provided an opportunity for guests to tour the College under the guidance of students from Years 7, 8, 9 and 11. Visitors observed students at work and play in activities that showcased the work of the various academic departments as well as sporting, arts, culutural and religious aspects of the College. A unique opportunity of Cerise and Blue is the chance to see the life of a boarding student with a tour of their dorm and facilities and a meal in Tolle's, the boarding dining room.

The Open Night showcased cooking demonstrations, Taiko drumming, various sporting events, fitness challenges, the inter-house public speaking competition, Defence Force

Cadets and performances from the Saints bands, Royal Australian Navy Band and ensembles. In addition, each academic department displayed teaching and learning material with staff being on hand to discuss curriculum offerings and answer questions.

Like many youngsters of his day, Marcellin did not attend school regularly; the French Revolution wreaked havoc on civic life in that period and although gifted with natural intelligence, Marcellin’s lack of formal education caused him to struggle as a seminarian. I cannot help but think that a young Marcellin would have flourished in the environment we provide our students here at Saints and would have loved the brotherly relationship our boys enjoy with each other.

A sincere thank you to the staff and students of the College for their hard work and generosity. They are rightfully proud and the Open Night provided a wonderful opportunity to share the riches of the College with the wider community.

Dear Members of the Saints Community,

A colleague of mine from another Marist school, who went to a Marist International Conference in Africa last year, recently shared a saying that she heard that really resonated with her. It was:

If you want to go fast – go alone! If you want to go far – go together!

I found this an inspiring saying on a number of levels. I too could see how it was a good reminder to us here at Saints in whatever we attempt. However, it highlighted for me the family spirit or strength of community that we have here.

This has been strongly reinforced this week with the Cerise and Blue Night. We estimate that the evening drew an extra 100 people over previous years. However, the most pleasing aspect of the whole event for me was the boys themselves, the pride they showed in the College and for the mature and respectful manner with which they conducted themselves.

It is common for me to hear at enrolment interviews that the quality of the boy(s) that took the family for a tour on Cerise and Blue Night was the most impressive part of the evening. As usual, I greeted families as they arrived but what overwhelmed me was the number of guests who personally approached me at the end of their tour to explain how impressive the Saints boy was. Several of them mentioned the name of the boy and the Year group. They got to know their tour guide and warmed to them.

One couple pulled me aside to tell me how impressed they were and said, ‘We were always keen on sending our son to your school, but this has absolutely confirmed it for us. Br Darren, you have got to know how wonderful this boy was – he was outstanding!” They repeated this about three times in the short discussion and I could see that the father was even becoming a little emotional about what he was saying. In other words, his heart was touched in some way by the experience of meeting this young man.

I am also aware that one boy told the people he was touring around the college ‘we are all brothers here, we look after each other’. It also reminds me of the comment that a new boy made to a new teacher at the end of the Commencement Mass in February this year. He said to her, “When I was singing the school song today I felt like a brother among brothers”. Believe it or not, that is a direct quote. It is etched in my memory.

The sense of brotherhood that these young men have expressed have been echoed in various ways by a number of other boys. When it is said, it is expressed with absolute conviction.

As another parent remarked to me last night, “There is a remarkable culture in this College”. I believe this hinges around the sorts of things that

have been mentioned above. What delights me about it is that it has overtones of acceptance, a sense of belonging, good relationships between boys and with staff members, and a whole range of other essential characteristics that impact on learning and the growth and development of a young man.

I am also conscious that some boys at times may not feel that way for a number of reasons. They may just find it harder to socially interact with their peers, may face other difficulties in their relationships here or other aspects of their lives impinge on their happiness at school. We always need to be aware of any boy who may feel this way and reach out to him so he too feels like a brother among brothers. I believe the real strength of our community is determined by how well we do this!

And it draws me back to the saying with which I started: “If you want to go far – go together!” It is actually possible to see that saying being lived out here in front of us. This environment has the potential to take all of our boys far. I am equally pleased that in the process they learn and embody that working together and accompanying each other on the journey is essential.

What a gift this will bring to those with whom our students come in contact both now and in the future. And, our world is thirsting for this!

Best wishes,Br Darren Burge

Deputy principal – pastoral careAt Saints we are part of an educational vision that has at its heart a desire to strive for excellence and offer opportunities to students that will assist them to become “good Christians and good citizens”. Openness, gratitude, acceptance and readiness to listen are important qualities in our day to day existence here at the College. At this half way point in the Term, I encourage students to actively embrace these qualities.

It is important to take the opportunity to pause and examine our energy levels and re-focus our attention on study, classroom activities and behaviour. It is pleasing from my perspective that the tone of the College continues to be positive. It is a credit to students that they continue to remain focused. As we move towards the end of the Term, as assessments become due and exams loom on the horizon, it is essential that students from Year 7 through to Year 12 make a conscious effort to not only maintain but to reinvigorate their efforts at Saints.

Parents have an important role to play in this by continuing to take an interest in their son’s work and activities, through positive reinforcement and encouragement. Staff and

teachers at the College have an obligation to support parents by providing meaningful opportunities for students to learn, by making learning accessible and by teaching the students creatively as well. Thank you for all your efforts. We all contribute and what’s more we do it well!

In addition to the teaching and learning that happens each day in the College we also have the following events coming up:

• Tuesday 1 September and Wednesday 2 September – Year 12 QCS & work experience.

• Friday 4 September – College Arts and Sports photos. Students are to wear their normal College uniform and many will need to bring in their sporting, band and other uniforms.

• Tuesday 8 September – Third round of immunisations for Year 8 only.

• Thursday 17 September – Classes finish for Term 3.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge wraps up for 2015 on Friday 28 August. Congratulations to all of the boys who took the initiative to challenge themselves!!

Many boys in Years 7, 8 and 9 have received College Bronze, Silver or Gold certificates during Year Level Assemblies. Also, the following Homerooms: 7.1, 8.2 and 9.4 received a lunch time pizza party for achieving the highest Homeroom tally (of books read) for their respective year levels mid-way through the reading challenge.

Official Certificates of Achievement or Participation will be issued in late October/early November.

Of course, the challenge is ultimately about encouraging our students to read regularly for leisure. Encouraging boys in Years 7, 8 and 9 to read recreationally for at least 2.5 hours every week is a proactive way to build students’ knowledge, vocabulary and ‘reading stamina’.

Hopefully the Premier’s Reading Challenge has prompted boys to make reading part of their daily routine once again.

The Gildas Centre is currently holding a ‘Shelfie’ competition and we have so far received some truly great entries. But what is a Shelfie? The Shelfie is a play on words tapping into the pop culture phenomenon of the ‘Selfie,’ but with a library twist. To participate, students are asked to creatively incorporate themselves into a photo with a book, magazine, newspaper, etc. that they find on our shelves. It’s a bit of fun, with chocolates on offer to the winner, but more importantly it encourages students to physically engage with resources available to them in the library. While students may not actively read or borrow any of the items they find at the time, our hope is that students remember what they see and get a feel for what we have on offer as a resource centre both academically and recreationally.

Assumption Mass: Congratulations to the 30 boys from Years 10 to 12 who sang as Cantors at the Assumption Mass at St Monica’s Cathedral. Also to Sam Treston (Year 12) and Will Webster (Year 11) who played trumpet and to the College Choir who sang a special item during Communion. All music contributed to the occasion to make it very memorable. Well done everyone.

Tablelands Tour: Congratulations to all boys who toured to Catholic Primary Schools last week on the bi-annual Tablelands Music Tour. The musicianship and behaviour of all boys was excellent over the two days and six concerts. Concerts comprised performances by the Symphony and String Orchestras and the Big Band and were ably compered by Sam Treston. Thank you to the Year 12 students who provided great leadership throughout the event and well done especially to the Year 7 and 8 students who toured for the first time.

ran Band: The Saints Concert Band and Big Band were lucky to rehearse and workshop with the Royal Australian Navy Band who visited us on the day of Cerise and Blue. The bands combined to present items at Cerise and Blue, much to the delight of the crowd. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to rehearse and play alongside professional players at the top of their game.

Cerise and Blue: Congratulations and thank you to all students and staff who showcased the wide variety of Arts offerings here at Saints. The Visual Art room was crammed with excellent art works from Years 7 to 12; the Film and Television room showed high quality student works with students editing on site; the Drama Department presented wonderful work in the McLaughlin Theatre and there were continuous music performances in the Chapel and Champagnat Quad and buskers in the Arts Quad. Well done everyone.

Jason Nguyen on Assembly: Congratulations to Jason Nguyen for his excellent performance of a difficult and engaging guitar piece during Assembly.

Performing arts Photographs: Formal photographs for all Saints Music Ensembles (Saints Concert Band, String Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, SAC Big Band, SAC Choir), Cantors and Mass Musicians, Saints Youth Theatre and all cast, crew and band from “Return to the Forbidden Planet” will be taken on Friday 4 September from 7.30am in Lennon Hall. All groups will wear their specific uniforms, with drama and musical groups wearing school uniform. Exact details will be published closer to the date.

string orchestra Performance: Members of the String Orchestra are reminded of their performance next Thursday 3 September at St Monica’s Cathedral. Students should arrive at 4.30pm in their maroon performance uniform and will be finished by around 5.10pm. Students are welcome to stay for the remainder of the concert which is a Music Extension Recital given by St Monica’s Year 12 students.

Music Extension recital: All are welcome to attend the St Augustine’s Music Extension Recital to be held in McLaughlin Theatre on Wednesday 9 September from 7pm. The Recital will feature our three Music Extension (MEX) students, Ben Carter on piano, Haydon Fanning on sax and Ryan O’Grady on violin. All support for these students is greatly appreciated as they perform their main recital for assessment.

Dr Cole on leave in Term 4: I will be taking Long Service Leave in Term 4. Music classes will be taken by Mr Ray Elias who is a well known musician and teacher in Cairns. The Symphony and String Orchestras will be conducted by Dr Mike Lynch, recently arrived from England.

Year 11 Visual arts: We welcomed Alessandro, an exchange student from Italy to the class for the last four weeks. During his time in our class he learnt the technique of lino printing to create this large print of a sea turtle. A beautiful work and one that should give him great memories of his time in Cairns and here at Saints.

italian exchange studentHello, my name is Alessandro Romei and I am from Milan, Italy.I am now back at home in Italy, from Cairns, with my family who were waiting for me all the summer worried about me in Australia. My family want to say thank you in particular to all who looked after me.I want to write a few sentences myself to thank all of the people I met during my short experience in Cairns because without you I could not have experienced the great time I had. I am really glad to have spent two months of my life with so friendly, kind, welcoming, sweet people at school and out of the school, because from you I got to know the most surprising and interesting differences between your culture and mine. Thanks to you, I am a changed person. I feel more responsible, mature and open to new experiences. At school I met the best teachers in the world because they were always available to solve all my problems with patience. Now I feel sad because I left my second home with the Holmes family but at the same time I am happy with what I experienced. All the friends I left will remain in my heart and in my mind all of my life. When I have to tell people where is paradise, I will say, Cairns! All the best to you all.Alessandro RomeiMilan, Italy.(note from Br Joachim: Alessandro represented himself and his country very well. We want to thank him for what he contributed to our school community while he was with us. Thanks too must go to the Holmes family who looked after him so well. GILDAS GAMESPHELAN WINS 5th Annual GILDAS GAMES! Three wins in Five Years!

Walter & Heavey still without a victory!Year 8 Phelan once again stamped their House name on the perpetual trophy with fairly convincing victories over the Heavey team during the College’s Cerise & Blue Open Night. This is the second year running that both these Houses met each other in the Grand Final but unlike last year’s half-point victory the gap this year was 5 points. The Gildas Games is based upon how fast and accurate the Year 8 lads can demonstrate a set of research skills acquired during Activities Week. As per 2014 the teams were expanded from four members to five due to the enthusiasm of the lads. Unfortunately, in one semi-final only two of the Reginald team of five turned up. Hopefully, the research skills gained, not only by the participants but all the Year 8s, will strengthen their assignment writing in the future.Special thanks goes to Mrs Meredith Stanton (Chief Marker), Mrs Sally Edwards and Mrs Robin Costelloe in preparing the Gildas Centre, not only for the Gildas Games but for all the other exhibits on display.

Thanks also go to a contingent of students who offered their services unprompted: Year 12 students Kyle Bradford, Patrick Welsh and Aidan Ekelund as well as a super-efficient Year 7 lad, Edward Orchard did such a great job before, during and at the end of the night. So with intelligence and service on display, one of the College’s mottos of Strong Minds and Gentle Hearts was embodied through the actions of all involved.

Term 3 is coming to a close. The last two weeks in boarding have had less school based distractions than week 4, which saw boarders scattered on camps and retreats from Fitzroy Island to the Tablelands. However the boarders have been no less busy. The seniors are moving towards their crucial QCS exams in Week 8 followed by their end of term assessment. This can be a stressful time and it is important that they stay focused and maintain a healthy balance of study, rest and recreation. We wish our Year 12 boarders the best for their exams and assessment.

For our younger boarders, they have been kept busy with the usual routine of study, activities, school and recreation. Last Friday the boarders in Years 7 – 9 had the opportunity to carve up the dance floor at the St Monica’s dance. A good time was had by the boys and girls from St Augustine’s. Thank you St Monica’s for hosting the event. The previous Friday, activities were run by the NET team, which saw a group of young adults engage the junior boarders in a range of physical activities and spiritual discussion.

Many thanks to Mr Keith Mole and Mr Lionel Williamson who every Saturday take the boarders on an outing. A strength of our boarding school is that we have the opportunity to explore North Queensland with two experienced men. The past two weekends have seen trips to Etty Bay and then to the Tablelands for the Yungaburra markets and a swim at Tinaburra.

important reminders

Firstly, Saturday 29 & Sunday 30 August is a free weekend and the boarders will be camping at the Mulgrave River. Secondly, as we near the end of term, a reminder to all the full time boarders who require transport to the airport. If itineraries could be forwarded at your earliest convenience to myself or your child’s Head of Residence for boarding transport.

Finally, this week myself, Br Darren, Czek Kersevani and Fr Laurie are looking forward to visiting Groote Eylandt on Friday 28 and Nhulunbuy on Saturday 29 August. I look forward to seeing all our boarding families from these areas.

japanese departmentseniOr Japanese Dinner at Kampai

On Wednesday 12 August, the Year 11 and 12 Senior Japanese students travelled to a small Japanese restaurant called Kampai for the annual and highly anticipated ‘Senior Dinner’.After waiting for everyone to arrive, we headed into the restaurant and took our seats. We then each nervously got up and ordered our drinks in Japanese, only to return to find the first platters of food being served. The courses consisted of a wide range of mouth-watering Japanese dishes, from sushi rolls and sashimi (raw fish) to karaage (deep fried chicken) and tempura prawns. Everything was delicious, and if I were to give the night a score out of ten, it would definitely be a high one. However, there was one unfortunate part of the night that I’m sure everyone was devastated about: the fact is that the karaoke machines weren’t working. Despite this, the night was still amazing and a great end to a fantastic two years of studying Senior Japanese.I would like to thank Ms Yamaguchi and Mr McKenzie for organising the event, escorting us and for taking photos.Oscar Perry - Year 12 student

Well done to the coaches and teams on their efforts to date and best of luck in your upcoming fixtures.

The St Augustine’s Rugby Union teams have made a flying start to their seasons by coming away with victories in their completed fixtures. Our U15’s took care of St Andrew’s 24 – 0 and then backed this up with a convincing 50 – 0 win over TAS. Our Opens team crushed Smithfield 41 – 0 and in their second game of the season they matched their win against Smithfield by toppling TAS 41 – 0. A great start by both teams, let’s hope they can continue their winning form for the remainder of the season.

st aUGUstine's sHines at peninsUla traCK & fielD trialsCongratulations must go to the 33 St Augustine's students who competed at the recent Peninsula Track & Field Trials which were held at Barlow Park over Sunday 23 and Monday 24 August. Of the 33 boys who competed, 16 have qualified for the State Titles which will be held in Brisbane in late October. Although all of our 33 boys performed admirably throughout the two day carnival, there were a number of individuals who excelled in their events and broke longstanding records. Cahn Butler-Channell broke records in both the 1500m and 3000m. Joshua Anderson broke the 3000m record and Jack Redmond set a record in the Shot Put. Well done to all of the boys and for those students who are progressing to the State Titles, the entire St Augustine's community wishes you the best of luck.
