April 2020

Dear Friends,

As you will notice, it has been quite a while since our last pro-duction of Knightlines. Perhaps that will be a blessing, and this be-comes a lifeline, reconnecting you to the amazing things that arehappening at St. Joe’s. We have all been affected deeply by theCovid-19 crisis, but it has brought about so much good for so manyin unexpected ways. Our sense of community has become stronger, and we appreciate how much we need to be in contact with thosewe love. We know how real the Brotherhood is.

In this issue you will read about some of the creative and ex-citing innovations that are coming. I am especially excited aboutthe new Donnelly Scholars and Knights Bridge programs. Our stel-lar arts and athletics programs shone once again this year untilthey were tragically ended. See how our faculty and students havebeen living the mission in so many ways throughout the year.

Change is part of life in a high school, and we have had morethan our share of that this year. We celebrated Barry Donnelly’s re-tirement with a Gala last fall that was simply stunning. It was abeautiful tribute to decades of commitment. We instituted a newmedallion in honor of meritorious service. Head Coach Augie Hoff-man moved on to Rutgers, and Dan Marangi has ably taken thereins. We began an exhaustive self-study for Middle States Accred-itation and reduced a rather lengthy Mission Statement to a man-ageable and memorable form: To educate the Vir Fidelis: Thefaithful man who will think, lead, and humbly serve in brotherhood.

Do contact the Advancement Office to let us know about thegood things that are happening in your life. We invite you to comeback and visit when the quarantine is over and see for yourself thewonderful things that are taking place here at St. Joe’s.

Sincerely,

Kevin McNulty ‘78President

SJR offers plenty of service opportuni-ties for students eager to help others, experience a new culture or simply see

a new part of the world. This past summer,SJR students traveled to Mexico, Buffalo andWest Virginia. During the last week of June, five SJR students and Director of CampusMinistry Joe LoGiudice headed to the CentroMarista de Desarrollo in the Yucatan state ofMerida, Mexico. They joined with threemembers of our larger Marist communityfrom the New York area and a group of Mex-ican high school students.

Together, they worked across culturaland language barriers to serve the localMarist Center. "Marcellin Champagnat be-lieved in young people and their ability tochange the world, so this trip was a realdream come true," explained LoGiudice. "Iwas not only able to help others who are ata huge disadvantage in poorer countries, butI also got to share my love of helping otherswith our students.”

One of those students, Alejandro Zayas’20, went in 2018 as well. He returned thisyear and called the trip “eye-opening”.

“The kids we worked with were sograteful,” Zayas said. “It was truly humbling.”The group spent most of their time workingwith disadvantaged children and buildingfences to separate farm animals from theMarist Center’s school. In their spare time, they visited Chichen Itza, ventured to “gru-tas” (caves) and “cenotes” (undergroundlakes) and, of course, enjoyed local Mexicanfood and culture.

“It was an exhausting week, but worthit to help these people, meet our newfriends and experience a culture unknown tomost of us,” said Matthew Webb ‘20.

In mid-July another group of SJR stu-dents and LoGiudice traveled to Buffalo tojoin Young Neighbors in Action. SJR had pre-viously participated in this program inBoston (2017) and Chicago (2018). This year, they put in seven-hour days volunteering at

a day camp for impoverished children whowould otherwise be vulnerable to violenceand drugs. The students served as campcounselors and supervised small field tripsduring the day that included a trampolinepark, go-karting and mini-golf, and swim-ming in Lake Erie.

Ryan Collins ‘20 said, “What impressedme the most was the dedication of the peo-ple running the camp."

Jack Lynch '19 noted that “it was greatto see how so many people were taking timeout of their summers to help out childrenless fortunate than themselves.”

The group also enjoyed checking outthe local sights, including a trip to NiagaraFalls where they rode on the famous Maidof the Mist.

The final mission trip of the summerwas to Nazareth Farm in West Virginia.

The Farm is a Catholic community inrural West Virginia, one of the poorest re-gions in our country. Nazareth Farm has four

cornerstones: simplicity, service, prayer andcommunity. Students are trained to usehand and power tools, before splitting up towork different sites each day, repairing thehomes of people who are struggling with dif-ficult financial situations.

Justin Chiovetta ’20 described the tripas extremely rewarding.

“The people whose houses we were re-pairing were really interesting to interactwith and, of course, very grateful for ourhelp,” Chiovetta said. “On top of that, Ihelped others not only by fixing the houses, but also by being able to help some otherstudents on the trip with things going on intheir lives. I would absolutely do it again.”

After a day’s work, the volunteers en-joyed some well-earned down time, visitinga local pool one day, and hiking in one of thebeautiful areas near the Farm.

According to Mr. LoGiudice, “one ofNazareth Farm's key phrases is ‘expect a mir-acle,’ which honestly each year I do and I amnot disappointed. God seems to be speakingin that valley and, if you go, you can experi-ence it for yourself.”

Expecting (and helping to create) mira-cles is what summer service is all about. It’sanother way God makes Himself present tous in our every day lives.

McNulty '78 Takes the Helm

I t's going to be tough to keep up with Kevin McNulty '78, SJR’snew President. McNulty bikes over 100 miles a week, holdsblack belts in Judo and Ju Jutsu, and operates a martial arts

academy in New York. After graduating from SJR, McNulty earned his bachelor’s degree

from Iona College as well as master’s degrees from Fordham andSeton Hall Universities.

Professionally, he has worked in inner-city and suburban Catholichigh schools since 1983 in both teaching and administrative capaci-ties. Most recently, he served as the Assistant Headmaster at SetonHall Prep for nearly 25 years. He is a Middle States Commissioner, and has authored several theology textbooks.

“I am very excited to be at St. Joe’s,” said McNulty. “Our Superin-tendent of Schools, Dr. Margaret Dames, asked me to consider theposition this spring, and after some thought and prayer, I realizedthat coming back to my alma mater was a unique opportunity, awonderful new challenge.”

He begins his first year as President with one goal in mind:“growth.”

“I’m very interested in building a larger sense of communityamong the faculty, staff, students and alumni,” hesaid. “We certainly want to grow our enrollment -that’s obviously a priority - but we are also lookingto enhance our facilities in the coming years.”

Looking back on his own SJR experience, McNultycited several teachers as having a tremendous impacton his academic growth, including Brother BennettMueller, who kindled an interest in history, his seniorreligion teacher, Brother William Cushing, whosparked his life-long study of theology and Mr. DavidHopper (biology), who he described as “just an incred-ibly engaging teacher.”

Outside of the classroom, Mr. McNulty was a foot-ball player and wrestler, though he admits to getting“booted off” the team because of his passion for judo.

Of course, much has changed in the past forty years.“When I was a student, there were fourteen Xaverian Brothers on

staff,” McNulty said. “Obviously things are very different everywherenow. The school is also smaller than when I attended, and I thinkthat is a strength since it enables teachers to work more closely withtheir students.”

Perhaps not surprisingly, McNulty comes from a family of educa-

tors. His wife, a Harvard-trained attor-ney, teaches second grade at SaintMargaret's in Pearl River, while hisdaughter, Maureen, teaches at IHA,and his son, Thomas, teaches at aninternational school in Germany.

McNulty’s introduction to theSJR community has been a very pos-itive one.

He joined the football team forits game in San Diego, enjoyed a welcome reception at the Knicker-bocker Country Club on September 5, and got to know the teachingstaff at a faculty retreat on September 6.

“I’m thrilled to be back home,” McNulty said. “I feel a great senseof excitement, and everyone has been very warm and welcoming.”

Asked to describe himself in three words, McNulty chose “faith-ful”, “dedicated” and “loyal”, choices which reveal a lot about his

WHO: Kevin McNulty is getting settled back into life at SJR. The 1978graduate has spent his career in Catholic education, most recently asAssistant Headmaster at Seton Hall Prep. His office in West Orange wasa hub of activity with non-stop traffic….in a good way. “I spoke to teach-ers and department chairs all day every day.”

LOCATION: Wanting to see, hear and learn the culture at SJR as quicklyas possible, McNulty moved the President’s Office up to the front ofthe building. A converted conference room, his work space sits directlybetween the Principal’s Office and the Business Office.

OPEN DOOR: McNulty’s door is rarely closed as he welcomes questionsand feedback from fellow staff members as well as students, particu-larly those in his U.S. History class stopping by with questions abouthomework or a recent exam.

WHAT’S INSIDE: His office is somewhat sparsely decorated, but whatyou see has meaning. A cross above the door was a gift from a mission-ary colleague in Peru. The miniature Bible and decorative coaster fromShanghai were both gifts from students at Seton Hall Prep.

PERSONAL CONNECTION: Most notably, McNulty has a porcelainstatue of a football player on his bookshelf. The statue was a gift forhis late brother John ‘79 at SJR’s football banquet. Behind the statueis a print of Barnegat Lighthouse on Long Beach Island, where McNultyenjoys vacationing each summer.

larry Inserra Jr. is one of the most suc-cessful business owners in BergenCounty, the President and CEO of In-

serra Supermarkets, Inc of Mahwah. His su-permarket chain includes twenty-threedifferent Shop-Rite stores (18 in Bergen- Pas-saic and 5 in Rockland), the newest of whichis in Wyckoff.

And aside from his business success, In-serra has been honored with a multitude ofawards in recognition of his philanthropy andservice to the community.

But ask him to talk about his business, andthe conversation will inevitably turn to family.

“Inserra Supermarkets is a ShopRite super-market chain, a family-owned business thatwas founded by my grandfather, Patsy Inserra,in 1954,” Inserra said.

“Sixty five years later, my family and I try toabide by the same ‘Inserra Creed’ every busi-ness day. Service, quality and aspects of ourbusiness. Providing the best possible service

and products to the people we serve is themost rewarding part of my business life.”

Inserra’s association with his family’s busi-ness dates back to his time at St. Joe’s.

“I started working in the stores during highschool, and was trained by my father to be abutcher,” he said. “I attended Lehigh Univer-sity, where I studied business and economics, but I continued to worked in our stores everyyear during my summer breaks. After I grad-uated, I took a more active role, and as my fa-ther neared retirement, I became Presidentof the company, and assumed responsibilityfor overseeing all of the financial and opera-tional aspects of the business.”

His favorite memories of his years at St.Joe’s involved the wrestling team.

“Being a member of the wrestling teamwas a great experience,” he said. “Wrestlingis both an individual and team sport. It taughtme the reward of individual achievementwhile contributing to the welfare of the team.

This lesson was a very important one for me,something that I have carried on throughmany areas of my personal and business life.”

In fact, contributing to the welfare of othershas been a guiding principal of Inserra’s pro-fessional career.

“We are proud of the company's long-heldtraditions of families serving families andbeing a good neighbor,” said Inserra. “Ourfamily works to help our local communitieswith continuous outreach and support of foodpantries and other hunger-relief organizations, hospitals, public and private schools, andchurches and temples, among many others.”

Those organizations regularly include Tableto Table, the Center for Food Action, the Com-munity FoodBank of N.J., Hackensack Univer-sity Medical Center and its Tackle Kids Cancerorganization and the MS Center at Holy NameHospital.

Inserra Supermarkets has also supported avariety of charitable endeavors focused on

“Our family is aware of the impact ofchronic illnesses in the daily lives of our ownfamily, those we serve, those we work withand the community at large. That's why wecommit significant charitable funding to sup-port research for the cure for chronic illnesseslike diabetes, leukemia, multiple sclerosis, cancer and heart disease. We also provide re-sources in our communities to families, asso-ciates and patients through our familyfoundation and local organizations who are inneed of our help including the Diabetes Re-search Institute Foundation, Hackensack Uni-versity Medical Center and its Tackle KidsCancer organization and the MS Center atHoly Name Hospital. And for 33 years we havehosted the Carl Inserra Leukemia Fund GolfOuting, which has donated millions of dollarsto charities both large and small.”

One of the beneficiaries of that generosityhas been St. Joseph Regional High School,

which is home to the Inserra Theater and thenew Rehearsal Studio. That support has beena tremendous benefit to the Performing Artsprogram at SJR.

“To be honest, back in 2003, I didn’t knowall that much about the theater program. Ijust saw the old auditorium, and realized thatthe school really needed a new theatre,” In-serra said modestly. “The fact that the per-forming arts program at St. Joe’s has grownso much in the ensuing years is a tremendoussource of pride and pleasure.”

In the end, it all comes back to family.“My parents instilled in us the gift of giving

back. Over the years, my sisters and I havebroadened the areas and organizations wehave become involved in. It is a challenge tobalance all the family business needs, opera-tional needs and needs of those in our com-munities on a daily basis, but we do our bestto prioritize the issues as they arise each day.It is important for us to carry on our parents’legacy.”

“Service, quality and people are the three

most important aspects of our business.”

saint Joseph Regional High Schoolprides itself on affording its studentsopportunities; to learn, to grow and

to think. Several students have found oppor-tunity–either through the school itself or ontheir own–to start their own small busi-nesses.

For some, starting a business is some-thing they've thought about before get-ting started. “I always figured I'd like tomake money doing something I love todo,” said Frankie Guanci ‘20, who oper-ates his own DJ business.

For others, it took more convincing. “Istarted out tutoring two good friends atSJR and they urged me to do more afterseeing an improvement in their grades,"said Michael Romano '20.

iday season. But through the extended power of so-

cial media, they were able to grow theirbusiness to a greater community.

Yale economist Joseph Altonji wasawarded the 2018 IZA Prize in LaborEconomics to recognize his seminal con-

tributions to the economic analysis of laborsupply, family economics, and discrimination.

“Altonji’s contributions have shaped the un-derstanding of how households decide ontheir labor supply under fluctuating businesscycles and changing labor markets, whetherthe family is the relevant unit of economic de-cision making, and what the mechanisms be-hind labor market discrimination are,” theaward citation states. “An overarching themeof his work is that even the most insightfuland fundamental theoretical advances mustbe supported by rigorous empirical evidence.”

Awarded every two years by the Bonn-based Institute of Labor Economics (IZA), theIZA Prize is meant to stimulate research thatseeks answers to the important labor marketpolicy questions of our time. It was formally

conferred during IZA’s 20th anniversary cele-brations in Berlin on June 28. Previous recip-ients include renowned economists such asDale Mortensen and Christopher Pissarides, who each later received the Nobel Prize.

The IZA Prize Committee consists of sevendistinguished economists, six of whom areprevious IZA Prize recipients.

“Picking Joe Altonji as this year’s IZA Prizewinner was an obvious choice. His profoundcontributions to several important areas oflabor economics — his concern about takingeconomic theory and measurement seri-ously — made the selection committee’s jobvery easy,” said IZA network director DanielHamermesh, who chairs the committee.

Altonji, the Thomas DeWitt Cuyler Profes-sor of Economics, studies questions concern-ing immigration, race, and gender in the labormarket, wage determination, labor supply, and economic links among family members.

In July of 2018, he assumed the role ofpresident of the Society of Labor Econo-mists, a professional organization com-posed of nearly 800 members thatpromotes the field of labor economics. Heis an elected fellow of the Econometric So-ciety and the American Academy of Artsand Sciences. He has served on a numberof government advisory panels, and cur-rently is a member of the U.S. Federal Eco-nomic Statistics Advisory Committee andthe National Science Foundation’s Social,Behavior and Economic Sciences AdvisoryCommittee. He is a research associate atIZA as well as at the National Bureau of Eco-nomic Research. Finally, recognizing theneed for supporting public debate with eco-nomic evidence, Altonji became a foundingeditor of Microeconomic Insights, a plat-form providing accessible summaries ofeconomic research.

it takes a certain level of maturity to recognize thatone’s dream of reaching the ranks of professionalathletes has closed. Dan Kinnally ‘09 is working hard

to now help others achieve the dream he once had.Kinnally’s goal of reaching the NFL and later becom-

ing a pro wrestler was derailed by injury. The energeticyoung alum is getting his feet wet as a business man-ager, opening up ANVIL performance center in FairLawn last year.

“It’s been a scary process,” explained Kinnally. “Frommeeting with the landlord and talking to the town - allthe way through construction, it’s hard to see the endin sight.”

Kinnally settled on the Fair Lawn location due to itsconvenience - located near the junction of Route 4/208,Route 17 and the Garden State Parkway. One area ofthe facility is dedicated to weight training; another sec-tion is a track for speed and agility training. In anotherpart of the facility, ANVIL has field turf which is used forteam training. The Green Knights lacrosse team went toANVIL for workouts during the fall.

“All the way through construction, you never see theend in sight. When it finally opened, it was just a beau-tiful facility - everything I could have dreamed about.”

Now that the facility is complete, the next step ofbuilding a business has begun: growing the customerbase.

For inspiration, Kinnally recalls the atmosphere atSJR. “You walk into SJR and everyone is your friend. Idon’t think that happens everywhere.”

He, along with his older sister Lauren, are working tocreate a similar environment at ANVIL, promoting theirfacility and training services, especially on social media.

“The gym business isn’t something people can getcompletely online. Yes, you can read articles or con-

nect with a trainer, but you need a place to liftweights, you need a place to run and sprint - you can’tdo that in your living room.”

If people come to his gym, Kinnally wants to makesure their workout is effective and they’re happy withthe results, something he learned from Coach Pollioat SJR. “I just loved the atmosphere in the weightroom, everybody trying to get better and he was thereto help.”

Kinnally also recalls teachers in the classroom whoshowed a belief in him when others did not.

“Mr. Coppola and Ms. Dennehy were both great forbelieving I could do whatever I wanted with my life, whether chasing a dream or just being myself,” Kin-nally explained. “Mr. Coppola knew I wasn’t a ‘stan-dard path’ kid, but had faith that I’d be successfulregardless.”

Kinnally’s path to success has certainly taken a fewtwists and turns, but with the facility more than sixmonths old and the customer base continuing to grow, the future is bright.

Matt Reid ‘94

Matt Reid ‘94 did not plan on havinga career in the residential mort-gage business. In fact, he jokes,

“No one grows up wanting to do what I dofor a living.”

So how did he come to spend much ofthe past 20 years as a top loan originator? He likes to say that he just “kind of fellinto it,” but the story is more complexthan that.

Reid, a 1998 graduate of Boston Col-lege, majored in Economics. He creditsthis education as providing him with astrong financial foundation. “By studyingEconomics,” he notes, “I obtained a broadview of the markets, especially equitiesand how they correlate to mortgagebacked securities and the bond market.”

While this was beneficial, he is alsoquick to point out that just like other ca-reers, one “doesn’t know 99% of what youneed to know until you are on the joblearning.” He found himself gaining expe-rience in this particular profession be-cause of a passion and ability to helppeople. Reid saw a need and has filled it.“Buying a home is stressful,” he observes.“I believe I can make it more enjoyable forthe client.” He uses this one simple no-tion to guide all that he does: “I treateveryone how I would want me and myfamily to be treated.”

Reid’s days are, like those of most salespeople, spent answering phone calls andemails. He has found, though, that whatmakes him successful is that he is con-scious of not letting this consume all ofhis time. “I have set up certain hours dur-ing which I don’t answer calls or emails sothat I can focus on new business and themost pressing needs of my existingclients,” he says. “I do my best to beproactive and not reactive.”

He also has a unique way of generatingnew business. Reid counts among his tac-

tics partnering with other localbranches of his company andcontributing his time to com-munity events about which heis passionate. Most notably,he says, “I rarely advertise andnever carry a business card.My clients tend to do that forme through word of mouth. The growth of my businesshas been and continues to bevery organic.”

Even while working withexisting clients and seekingnew ones, Reid finds time togive back. He is proud toannounce, “We recentlyraised $10,000 for a charity. Both my branch and mycorporate office matchedthat amount.” In Januaryof 2020, he was able topresent the organization with a check for$30,000. This is in addition to more than$20,000 that he helped raise last year fora Veterans group in New Jersey.

The groundwork for working hard, treating people fairly, and being a philan-thropist was first laid by his parents. Reidis also quick to credit St. Joe’s with foster-ing those ideals. He mentions a plethoraof great teachers, including Mr. Shust, Mr.Fogarty, and Mr. Huebner, all of whomhelped him along the way.

When asked to name the most influen-tial figure from his high school years, hesays without hesitation that it was Mr.Mike Doherty. “He was not only a greatclassroom teacher, but was also a phe-nomenal basketball coach and motivator.”Reid goes on to say that Mr. Doherty was“as close to a second father as you canget. I still use so much of what he taughtme every day.” He notes, “I would not bewhere I am in my career and as a parent

if I didn’t have him in my life.” The former Green Knight has won nu-

merous individual awards for production

and customer satisfaction throughout his

career. He is a Branch Manager at Cross-Country Mortgage in Pearl River, NY. He

is a married father of 3 children who

makes his home in Nanuet, NY.

Mike Yotnakparian ‘79 is no strangerto consistency and commitment. After all, he has a 29-year streak of

playing golf each week, which is no smallfeat for one residing in New Jersey. Possiblyeven more impressive is that Yotnakparianhas worked for 3M Electrical in their Prod-ucts Division for the past 37 years.

He demonstrated confidence and cre-ativity by the way he secured his job. Heattended Fairleigh Dickinson University, and worked for four years in the school’sCareer Placement Office. He recalls theday 3M called his office to place an adver-tisement for an open position. Accordingto Yotnakparian, “I told them we had theperfect candidate, and sent myself downto interview.” He has worked there eversince graduating in 1983.

He has served 3M in various roles duringthat time, and is currently an Account Exec-utive for NJ/NY. It's no surprise that Yot-nakparian counts “reliability, hard work, and honesty” among the cornerstones ofhis business philosophy. He notes, “Thisseems simple, but is extremely effectiveover a long period of time.” He counselsothers in sales, “Know not only your own

portfolio, but your competition’svalue proposition as well.”

Yotnakparian credits his FDU ed-ucation with preparing him for thefinancial components of his role. “Ireceived a degree in Marketingwith a minor in Finance.” He con-tinues, “Nowadays, a lot ofschools have Sales majors, whichI would recommend younger peo-ple explore.”

Like other Alumni, he is alsoquick to point out the influence ofSJR faculty on his longevity and success.“I had Mr. Richard Shust,” he says. “He wastough, but wanted to get the most out ofyou. I didn’t always like or understand himat the time, but looking back he madequite an impact.”

He finds that he is able to balance hislife both inside and outside of work by de-sign. Yotnakparian advises, “Focus on theimportant things like family, faith, andfriends. And learn that sometimes youjust have to say ‘no.’ You simply cannotdo everything.”

Day to day activities vary for Yotnakpar-ian. “Sometimes I dress casual and go to

job sites to offer solutions to contractorsfor their electrical needs,” he says. “Othertimes I dress more formally, and do pre-sentations to engineers and specifiers.”Not surprisingly, he notes, “My favorite at-tire is when I dress in golf clothes and takekey customers on the course to help ce-ment relationships.”

Nevertheless, when Fay switched majorsafter the first semester, he found that his SJReducation did provide a foundation for suc-cess in Tampa’s business program.

“Mr. Coppola’s economics class introducedme to stock simulations and taught me to

understand the markets,” explained Fay.“Fast forward a year and I was handed thefinancials for JC Penney to analyze whetheror not to invest. Just like that, I was able touse profitability and liquidity ratios to puttogether my analysis.”

Fay’s future looks bright after securingan internship during his sophomore yearthat has turned into a part-time job atLoanFlight Lending LLC where he is a Jun-ior Compliance Specialist. Curci has been in the energy industry sincegraduating from Rutgers University with a BSin Finance. “I was fortunate in that I havehad the opportunity to work in many rolesin energy like sales and analytics, operations, finance, and strategy,” says Curci. “This hasgiven me a broad base of understandingabout the industry and allowed me to fur-ther my career.”

From an educational standpoint, he has

not relied purely on his undergraduate de-gree, but rather continued his studies. Curciearned an MBA from Rutgers University in2016 with a concentration in Strategy &Leadership as well as Analytics & Informa-tion Management.

He cites integrity as being “fundamentalto having a successful business career. Ifcoworkers or customers don't believe ortrust that you will do what you say, you're ata disadvantage.”

Curci finds his career to be quite rewardingin two specific ways. “Working with greatpeople and knowing that the projects suchas those for renewable energy that we aredeveloping and building will be beneficial tofamilies in this area for years to come” givehim great satisfaction.

He mentions Mr. O’Donnell as being themost influential faculty member during histime at SJR. “He was,” Curci says, “simply agreat Math teacher.”

For Curci, balancing his business life withcommunity service and philanthropic workcomes down to planning. “There is alwaystime to do community and philanthropicwork. In one of the least surprising Senior Superlativepolls, Sergio Marrero was voted Most Likely to Suc-ceed by the Class of 2002. The hard-working Green

Knight followed up on the promise made for him byhis classmates. Marreo completed his undergraduatework at Northeastern University before earning hisM.B.A. at Harvard Business School and topping thingsoff with another master’s degree at Harvard, this timein public policy.

Always a big thinker, Marrero found his way into theworld of venture capitalism almost by accident. Witha personal mission statement to accelerate new ven-tures that support and create a better world, Marrerobegan his career by forming his own EdTech companywith a focus on increasing access to higher education.

“Along the way, I met an investor who asked me tojoin them and I jumped at it. I was forthcoming, I toldthem that ‘I want to learn how you all think.’”

Eventually, Marreo was recruited by Venture Univer-sity and is now on to his latest project: Stat Zero, astartup with “zero” goals: zero disease, zero pollution, zero illiteracy. “We align with government sectors thatwe look to invest in and also the UN sustainable de-velopment goals.”

“With Stat Zero, we’re helping to deliver health careand human services that the government provides, doing that more effectively and more efficiently. It’s anoble cause and worth spending my time on.”

“The only resource we can’t get back is time. I’mhonored to have the opportunity to do this every day.”

Most of his time is spent meeting with startups andfounders who are looking for investment. Marrerosees his time at SJR as laying a foundation for his workas an advisor/coach.

“Joe’s had an impact on me for sure. I do view thiswork as a service, as part of being the Vir Fidelis. Help-ing founders who are trying to change the world, try-ing to figure out how to make their businesses workand grow, that’s the most rewarding.”

In terms of impact at SJR, Marrero recalled severalteachers who gave him an early outlet to use his mindfor good.

“Of course, Mr. Shust, he pushed us to really thinkand question,” he explained. “Another who pushed mein a creative way was Mr. Neuvirth.”

Marrero continues to think and to be creative, host-ing several TED Talks over the past few years. In hisspare time, he enjoys working out, traveling and writ-ing as well as video editing and design. New Initiatives Enhance Academic Opportunities

St. Joseph Regional High School recently unveiled twonew initiatives that will enhance its academic offeringsand have a direct impact on the eighth graders looking

to make their decisions about Catholic high school. The Knights Bridge Academy reflects an effort to address

the needs of students whose parents feel they would benefitfrom an additional year of academic preparation, a “bridge”between middle school and high school. The Academy willoffer a blended curriculum under the guidance and instruc-tion of an experienced eighth grade teacher who is also cer-tified in special education. The first half of the year willreview essential topics from eighth grade in the core aca-demic subjects: English, math, history, science, theologywith a special emphasis of developing strong study skills. The second half of the year will focus on those same sub-jects, but this time with an emphasis of the concepts andskills they will be required to master as freshmen.

“The program came about as a response to the increasednumber of students who have been coming to us having re-peated eighth grade in a local school,” said SJR PresidentKevin McNulty. “We felt like we could offer a better pro-gram to help young men transition to the academic and so-cial challenges of SJR.”

“Our teachers can better share our culture,” he contin-

ued. “We can offer small classes with tremendously well-trained staff. Rather than simply repeat what has alreadybeen done in eighth grade, our students will have the op-portunity to move ahead. Additionally, Academy studentswill have the benefit of being part of our community withaccess to clubs, intramurals, retreats, theater, band, andother activities.”

In the long run, McNulty sees a benefit for both our stu-dents, who will have a “leg up” as they begin their freshmanyear, and the school, since the program should lead togreater retention.

“Each Academy student will also be assigned an upper-classman who will serve as a ‘big brother’ and mentor,” Mc-Nulty added. “That relationship should provide a greatbenefit to students as they transition, academically and so-cially, to high school.”

At the same time, SJR is proud to introduce the Barry J.Donnelly ’71 Scholars program to select members of theClass of 2023. The program is named after SJR’s first Pres-ident, Barry Donnelly, who retired in 2019. The initial fund-ing for the program was one of the goals the gala celebratedin his honor in November.

Applicants who scored in the highest percentiles of theHSPT Entrance Exam, and who demonstrated exemplary ac-ademic achievement in middle school were offered the op-portunity to join this select group.

Donnelly Scholars will be offered increased opportuni-ties to take AP courses, even in their freshman year. FreePSAT/SAT/ACT test preparation will be available to all partic-ipants, who will also be offered the opportunity to take partin unique field trips that will build on classroom experiences, and to hear from professionals in the fields of engineeringand business.

“The goal is to better position our most gifted studentsfor admission to the most competitive and prestigious col-leges and universities in the nation,” said McNulty. “Beyondthat, we are expecting students in the Donnelly Scholarsprogram to assume the mantle of leadership, both in schooland in the communities where they live.”

The program came about as a response to student requests formore challenging academic offerings throughout their career at SJR.It will serve to complement the school’s already robust program ofacademic opportunities that includes STEAM programming (robot-ics and engineering), the SJR Learning Center, on-line elective offer-ings through the Virtual High School and the school’s CorporateInternship Program, now in its sixth year.

“The Donnelly Scholars program offers a non-tracked opportunityfor young men to excel where their gifts and talents lie,” said PrincipalMichael Bruno. “Beginning with Freshman AP World History, stu-dents will do college level work all the way through their time at SJR.And unlike some more highly selective programs, ours will encouragestudents to also compete on athletic teams of the highest calibers, participate in an award-winning theater arts program and take lead-ership roles in our student government. As we educate the vir fidelis,we will encourage the growth of the whole person.”

Since the start of the academic year,Saint Joseph Regional High Schoolhas been completing a self-study in

preparation its Middle States evaluationin the fall of 2020. A combination of stu-dents, parents, administration, faculty, and members of the board have been ex-amining the school and its current poli-cies, with the goal of being re-accreditedin 2020 and advancing the growth of theinstitution in the future.

The Middle States Association of Col-leges and Schools (MSA) is a voluntary,non-profit organization that conductspeer evaluation and regional accredita-tion of schools in the United States. Inorder to achieve and maintain accredita-tion, a Middle States Evaluation team vis-its member schools every seven years andassesses their programs based on interna-tionally recognized standards set forth bythe MSA.

SJR was last accredited in 2014, follow-ing a visit in November of 2013 and a self-study conducted during the 2012-13

school year. Among other things, the rec-ommendations generated by that self-study led to the completion of theschool’s first comprehensive strategicplan, and a change in the school’s leader-ship model to include both a Presidentand Principal.

In 2019-20, SJR is preparing for the MSAvisiting team by evaluating itself using adocument called “Excellence by Design”to study its practices and reflect on itsstrengths and weaknesses.

According to Mr. Roger Kintish, who, along with Mrs. Joanne Cavera, is the In-ternal Coordinator for the evaluation, theMiddle States protocol has “two key ele-ments that must go hand-in-hand: thetop-down self -evaluation and the ActionPlan. We need to know who we are andwhere we are and identify our strengthsand weaknesses. Then we must formulatea plan to improve our shortcomings.”

The main goal of the Middle Statesprocess for SJR is progress.

Principal Michael Bruno ‘05 and mem-

ber of the Planning Team said, “Ulti-mately, the goal will be to set a road mapfor the next seven years. By establishingmeasurable and attainable student per-formance goals, the school will strive to,as it always has, continually monitor ourprogress in those key areas that directlyimpact and benefit our students.”

In order to achieve progress, all keystakeholder groups of the school - facultyand staff, parents, students, board, alumni- participated in the process. So far, sur-veys have been sent to each group, whichhave been evaluated and analyzed by thefaculty and planning team. These resultsare crucial, as they show a wide range ofviews on the condition of the current in-stitution.

Mrs. Cavera says, “By polling the SJRcommunity and through personal contactand experience, the Middle States processwill move SJR forward to improve and en-hance our school.”

The Planning Team has used these pollsto gather information about the degree to

which SJR effectively adheres to the fol-lowing twelve standards of Middle States:Governance and Leadership, School Im-provement Planning, Finances, School Or-ganization and Staff, Health and Safety,Educational Programs, Assessment andEvidence of Student Learning, StudentServices, Student Life and Activities, andInformation Services.

When the self-evaluation part of theprotocol is complete, the final step will bethe development of an Action Plan. Thisplan will consist of a school-wide curricu-lum revision and the development of stu-dent-performance goals to beimplemented in the next few years.

Mrs. Cavera predicts, “We will put inplace new curricula, new syllabi for eachcourse, review technology, educate our fac-ulty on many new education practices andtools, improve our physical plant, and raiseawareness in our entire school community.”

When asked why St. Joe’s undergoes sucha rigorous process, Mr. Kintish, responded,“We are looking for a realistic determina-tion of our strengths and weaknesses as aninstitution, so we can make realistic plansfor necessary improvements.”

“No school is perfect,” Principal Brunosaid, “but all schools should be striving tobetter themselves in every area, and I be-lieve that is exactly what we are trying todo by engaging in this process.”

Although gaining accreditation fromMiddle States is an admirable goal in andof itself, Mrs. Cavera believes the processis, in some ways, more valuable than theend product.

“Perhaps the greatest accomplishmentof the Middle States process is the timeand effort put forth by everyone whocares about our school and shares a com-mon goal: to help SJR grow and prosper. As the Xaverian Brothers’ motto states, ‘insmall things harmony grows,’ and ourhope is that many “small things” will leadto greater change and improvements.”

PERFORMING ARTS

I n just five short months, Saint Joe’s hasbeen home to three different theatricalproductions including a middle school

show (Bye, Bye Birdie) and not one, but twoSJR musicals.

In November, the SJR performing arts de-partment presented She Loves Me, a musi-cal that was the inspiration for threedifferent movies, the most recent beingYou’ve Got Mail, with Tom Hanks and MegRyan in 1998.

This “small” musical had a cast of 24 andan ensemble of twelve and ran for four per-formances November 15-17. It featuredBrendan Moran and Marc Rivera as GeorgNowack and Chloe Hodnett and ChristinaPriestner as Amalia Balash, a mis-matchedcouple who clash while working together inthe same perfume shop, only to find love to-gether, in the long tradition of romantic

comedy, at the end.Remarkably, just two months later, The

Addams Family debuted on the Inserra The-ater stage. The SJR production of the 2010Broadway show featured 60 students in itscast and crew and ran for ten performancesfrom January 24th through February 1st.

The musical is loosely based on The NewYorker cartoons of Charles Addams and thesixties TV sit-com with the immortal themesong and a cast of ghoulish characters.

Seniors Ralph Ignacio and Marc Riverastarred as the dashing (but hen-pecked)Gomez Addams; his wife, Morticia, wasplayed by Devin Leonard and Majella Mal-tempi. The Addams daughter Wednesday(played by Christina Priestner and KylieMcVey), sets the plot in motion when sheannounces her intention to marry LucasBeineke (Ben Hajek/Aidan Woods), whose

“normal” parents are unnerved when theymeet the Addams Family, particularly UncleFester (Michael Bloom/Declan Henry), withpredictably comic results.

Both shows were directed by TarynTonelli, an alum of the SJR theater programwho has gone on to enjoy a successful pro-fessional career as a singer and actress.Richard Todd Adams provided musical direc-tion for both productions.

“I had a great experience with bothshows,” said senior Ralph Ignacio. “It wasdefinitely difficult to balance school workwith the scene work, but not impossible. Itook my time researching my characters andmaking them my own, working off my fellowactors as well. The shows were very differ-ent, of course, with a different style ofhumor, but the audiences loved both ofthem, each and every performance.”

Football

The 2019 Green Knights saw their hopesfor a second consecutive state title endin heart-breaking fashion with a 10-8

loss to Don Bosco in the Non-Public Group 4state semi-finals. The loss dropped the team’soverall record to 7-4 for the season.

It was a season of “up and downs” for SJR,which opened its season with a 24-13 winover JSerra in the Honor Bowl in San Diego. The team followed that win with a decisive 33-7 victory over Cardinal Hayes in the Battle ofthe Bridge at Metlife Stadium. The regular sea-son included wins over Paramus Catholic (a21-14 victory on Homecoming), DePaul (55-14), Bergen Catholic (28-10) and an impressive24-6 win over eventual Group 4 champion St.Peter’s in the final game of the regular season.

But the regular season also included a28-0 loss to Maryland powerhouse St.Francis Academy, a 35-14 loss to DonBosco, and an unexpected 28-27 defeat atthe hands of Seton Hall Prep.

The playoff game with Bosco was a tight, defensive battle that resulted in a score of7-2 at the end of the third quarter. Afteran Ironman field goal made it 10-2, withless than 90 second left, senior MikeAlaimo fired a perfect pass to Albert Ser-rano for an SJR touchdown, but on the en-suing two-point conversion, junior AudricEstime was stopped just short of the goal-line.

“Offensively, we had a hard time gettinginto a rhythm,” said Coach Hoffmann after-wards. “Defensively, we played a realstrong game. Penalties on both sides brokeup the flow of the game, but stuff like thathappens in these situations.”

Though the team closed its season with-out the state title they had been hoping todefend, St. Joe’s was still ranked as the #3team in New Jersey. New head coach DanMarangi finds himself with a host of expe-rienced players returning, and great expec-tations for another title run in 2020.

SoccerIt was always going to be a challenging

season for third year head coach ChrisVlahinich ’07.

“Coming into the season, we knew wewere going to have to replace seven starterswho had graduated, so finding the rightchemistry and combinations was alwaysgoing to be a challenge,” he said.

However, during the course of the year, injuries slowed a young team even further, particularly the loss of three year starter An-gelo Pelosi and two year letter winter RoccoAmbrogio.

“Adversity creates opportunity, and cer-tainly our younger players got a lot of varsityexperience,” Vlahinich said, “especiallyfreshmen Dan Brennan and Rocky Russo andsophomore Matt Fernandez.”

Though the team finished with a 5-12record, the season was not without its mem-orable moments. The team ended the regu-lar season with a tightly contested 1-0 loss to

And on October 29, SJR took on UnionCatholic in the first round of the states, andafter double overtime, the score remained 0-0. In the penalty kick shootout, Tyler Toft ’21made an enormous clutch save, and ChrisSalazar ’20 netted the winning goal.

“What gives me a sense of optimism is thatthere’s some real talent and athleticism in thisyear’s underclassmen, many of whom areplaying all year round,” said Vlahinich. “Hope-fully, those things will come together so thatwe grow into a real strong team next season.”

Cross CountryThe cross country team went 2-2 in league

competition with wins over Paramus Catholicand DePaul. Seniors Ryan Collins and NicosEftychiou were the top two finishers in theleague meet. Collins, with a time of 17:44and a 7th place finish was selected First TeamAll-League. Eftychiou, who finished 12th witha time of 18:28 was a Second Team selection. At the County Group Championships, Efty-chiou finished 8th with a 17:51 time whileCollins was 10th with a time of 17:55. Marangi to helm green Knights

A fter six seasons leading the Green Knights, Coach Augie Hoffmannannounced in January that he would be accepting an assistant

coaching job with Greg Schiano and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.“This is a family decision,” Hoffmann said. “It is with a heavy heart

that I make this move. I have had several opportunities over the pastfew years, but this one feels right. I am forever grateful for all that St.Joe’s has given me, most especially, the ability to positively impact thelives of young men on a day-to-day basis. St. Joe’s will always be home.”

Hoffmann leaves with a 50-19 career record, that included a Group 3State Championship in 2016 (defeating DePaul 26-17) and a Group 4title in 2018, beating Bergen Catholic 13-0.

Three weeks later, SJR President Kevin McNulty announced that DanMarangi, who had spent three years as SJR’s defensive coordinator, would succeed Hoffmann as head coach.

“Dan Marangi offers St. Joe’s an excellent vision for the future of ourprogram,” said McNulty. “He provides continuity to our enormouslysuccessful past while simultaneously bringing widely respected ingenu-ity and creativity.”

For a program that has long prided itself on defensive excellence,Marangi’s appointment is no surprise. As defensive coordinator at DonBosco from 2004-2016 and at SJR from 2017-2019, Marangi has directedthe defenses of ten state championship teams. Collectively, the squadshe has coached have compiled an overall record of 173-33.

“I am thrilled to be entrusted with fostering the mission of St. Joe’s,which is to build the Vir Fidelis, the faithful man,” Marangi said. “Every-thing we do on the field is directly related to that. We have a great coreof players returning, and I’ve seen the hunger for success already takingplace in our weight room. I have every expectation that the tradition ofexcellence that is the hallmark of our program will continue in the future.”

SJR HOOPS CAPTuRE FIFTH JAMBOREE TITLEThe varsity basketball completed another outstanding season,

posting a 22-6 record. The team got off to an 11-0 start, whichincluded a thrilling OT win over Don Bosco, and earned them the#2 seed in the Bergen County Jamboree. They used that positionto run the table and defeat Bergen Catholic 67-61 for SJR’s fifthcounty title (previously 1981, 1982, 2005, 2016).

It was a remarkable season by any measure and was witness totwo historic milestones. On January 21, Coach Michael Dohertyposted his 500th career victory with a 79-55 win over NormanThomas Academy of New York. Doherty had previously received theYMCA’s Nicholas Saingas Award for service to youth in November.

And senior Nazir Williams became just the sixth Green Knightto score 1000 career points, reaching the milestone in the quar-terfinals of the Jamboree against Ridgewood. He finished with1143 points, and joins John O’Donnell, J.R. Inman, Noruwa Agho,Nate Garvey and Chauncey Hawkins as previous members of theSJR 1000 Point Club.

Williams was also the Record’s “Athlete of the Week” onMarch 5 after scoring 26 points and recording 7 rebounds, 3 as-sists and 2 steals in the Jamboree final. Earlier in the same week,he had a 19 point game against Dwight Morrow. He will play inthe New Jersey North-South All-Star Classic at Rider University.

“Nazir had a great Jamboree and final, and has worked extremelyhard,” said Coach Doherty. “He’s been with us as we kind of regener-ated the program. And beyond that, he is an outstanding young man.”

Danny Lans was the recipient of the Charles Yennie MemorialSportsmanship Award in the Jamboree, based on the qualitiesof sportsmanship, leadership and teamwork.

The Green Knights made life difficult for opponentswith an exceptionally well balanced attack that in-cluded Williams (15.8 ppg), Dyree Rogers (12.4), Ans-ley Almonor (10.4), Daniel Lans (10.1) , Albert Serrano(9.4) and Malcolm Capers (6.4), each of whom tookturns dominating games at different times.

“2020 will always be remembered as a history-mak-ing season for SJR basketball,” said Coach Doherty.“This special group of hard-working players all ralliedaround one another and believed in themselves enoughto bring home the 2020 Jamboree championship. Theteam truly grew as the season progressed and playedtheir best basketball when it counted most, includingclutch and hard-fought victories over Don Bosco (semi-finals) and Bergen Catholic in the Jamboree.”

The team finished ranked #12 in New Jersey, andnotched five wins over teams that were ranked in the state’stop ten at some point in the season.

The JV team finished 14-6, which included a 6-0 tear to finishthe season. The freshmen posted a 17-4 record and lost, inovertime, in the county championship game.

VARSITY SKATERS WIN EGAN and BIG NORTH GOLD CuPS

The Green Knights hockey team enjoyed one of its greatestseasons ever under the direction of head coach Larry Mahurter’87. The team finished 21-2-1 and captured the Big North reg-ular season title, the Big North Gold Cup, the Egan Conferenceleague title and the Egan Cup playoff championship. Since theinception of the program 42 years ago, SJR has had seven sea-sons in which the Green Knights have hit the 20 win mark, themost recent being in ’96-97. However, SJR teams have postedtwo or fewer losses only four times before.

The 2020 squad was the first SJR team to win the Egan Cup.They did so on the strength of a 5-2 win over St. John Vianney(who had beaten them in the Egan Cup final in 2018 and 2019).Senior Justin Rauch had a hat trick while juniors JustinHughes and Thor Hansen also scored.

The team captured its second Big North Gold Cup inthree years with a 4-1 win over Lakeland. After a score-less first period, St. Joe’s scored twice in a 58 second spanof the second period, getting goals from Victor Diaz andJoe Iannuzi. The Green Knights iced the victory with thirdperiod tallies by Justin Hughes and James DeVito.

“We just kept the dump and chance game going, andthey started to tire in the third period,” said CoachMahurter. “We stuck to our game plan, and our goalie,Tomas Spero, was a standout. He started the year still re-habbing an ACL injury, and we brought him along slowly, but the last month, he’s just been lights out.”

Spero finished the season with a 1.10 goals against average and a.945 save percentage.

Overall, the team was led by junior Justin Hughes, who scored 15goals and 18 assists for 33 points. Senior Justin Rauch was second inscoring (13-15-28 pts) with captain James DeVito third (12-14-26) andjunior Thor Hansen close behind (9-13-22).

Coach Mahurter, with an eight year record of 120-42-10 (a .727 winningpercentage), moves to second all-time behind Frank and Barbara Horan.

The JV team enjoyed a strong season as well, posting a 14-8-3 underthe direction of coaches Scott ’02 and Chris ’05 Donnelly. The teamadvanced to the playoff finals against Don Bosco. Down 3-1, they ral-lied to tie the score in the third period, but lost a heart-breaker in over-time to the Ironmen.

WRESTLERS ARE COuNTY and DISTRICT CHAMPIONSFreshman James Mullen is N.J. State Champion

SJR’s wrestling team enjoyed a remarkable year, finishing withan 11-5 match record and capturing their second consecutiveB.C.C.A. County title in January and fourth consecutive Districtchampionship in February. They were the top team in the Regions, and finished third among all the teams in New Jersey in the statefinals in Atlantic City.

Freshman James Mullen became the first freshman in history towin the heavyweight state title, defeating J. T. Cornelius of South-

ern Regional 7-3 in the finals.“He’s got a great mindset with the way he

comes in, the way he attacks practice, the way heattacks the sport,” said SJR Coach Tom Farinaro.

That approach, coupled with Mullen’s tremen-dous athleticism, also made him a valuable mem-ber of this year’s football team, according tocoach Dan Marangi. “He started the summer asa linebacker, and we needed a defensive line-man, and he took on that task and neverflinched.”

“This is crazier than anything I’ve done,” Mullensaid of his state title. “I just go out there and try

to score as many points as I can throughout the whole match, from the opening whistle to the end of the third period. It’sa really special moment.”

Mullen becomes the seventh SJR wrestler to capture anindividual state title, and the second to do so in his fresh-man year (the other was SJR’s current AD Damion Logan).

Logan noted that perhaps the year’s most impressiveaccomplishment came in the state finals at Atlantic City, where SJR had a medalist in seven of the fourteen weightclasses.

“Think about that,” Logan said “Out of all the wrestlersin the entire state of New Jersey, we had medalists in halfof the fourteen weight classes.”

Cetta was also the Record’s “Athlete of the Week” on Feb-ruary 26 after he defeated the state’s top ranked wrester in hisweight class and was named District 1 Outstanding Wrestler.

Earlier in the year, SJR also competed in the Fifteenth An-nual Escape the Rock tournament in Pennsylvania. The teamcame away 4th among the 51 teams that participated fromacross the nation, and first among the 9 New Jersey teams inthe competition. In addition, they finished 11th among 128teams competing in the Beast of the East championship.

Loyalty Club GivingThe Loyalty Club recognizes individuals who enriched the mission of Saint Joseph Regional High School with financial support of up to $999 during the 2018-2019 school year.

"The many ways I benefited from my time at St. Joe's have been apparent to me for some time, but my ministry as deacon over the last nine years has shown me that the need for Catholic high school level education is more important to our Church and to the world at large than ever before."

"My family is committed to SJR because we believe in the value that a faith-based education affords. Although this commitment can take many forms, the lowest common denominator is that when people get involved, it forms a community and something everyone feels they have equity in. When something like this occurs, we ensure the sustainability of SJR for years to come."

Alumni Support By ClassSaint Joseph Regional High School takes pride in the fact that every one of our fifty-seven graduating classes is represented in this annual report. The competition between classes to show the most support for their alma mater has intensified in recent, in particular surrounding our annual Day of Giving in May. We recognize our classes based on the total number of donors, the total amount of dollars raised and the percentage of active alumni who make at least one gift. Through their Senior Giving Challenge, the Class of 2019 made its debut in the Top 10 in its first year of eligibility!

Forever SJRThe Forever SJR program recognizes consistent giving from its constituents. Benefactors in the Forever SJR program have made a gift to SJR in each of the past five years, at a minimum. Their consistent committment to the Catholic mission of St. Joseph Re-gional High School sets an example of philanthropy for their peers, fellow alumni and other members of the Green Knights com-munity. A smaller group of donors have supported SJR since the inception of the Advancement Office more than 10 years ago.

Scholarships & Restricted GiftsThroughout the school year, SJR receives a number of restricted gifts with intended purposes. These are often designated toward named scholarships that are presented to our current students. In addition, they may include gifts directed to a particular program or activity at the school. We thank all of our benefactors for the generosity, particularly as it supports the opportunities that are most dear to their own hearts.
