Neighbors packed the meeting to watch Jim present a 96 page powerpoint that he flew through in just under 45 minutes. Jim was blessed to have some longstanding neighbors in attendance and it was wonderful to watch them help him close the gap on any details that he was unclear about. When the lifelong neighborhood volunteers in the audience spoke you could hear a pin drop. I watched as my classmates from 40 years ago that have, and will, never leave the neighborhood scoot their chairs toward the titans of the neighborhood as they elaborated something Jim had men- tioned. Lannie McNichols, fittingly, sat front and center. Lannie is a longtime Dundee superhero, who basically invented the DMPA neighborhood group (among a handful of others) and has, since like JFK, worked to maintain this community that is the envy of the city. Lannie was the driving force to preserve the Dundee globe light poles in 1979 when the city complained they were too costly to maintain. The city began to remove them throughout sev- eral other midtown neighborhoods. She worked closely with Peter Hoagland (NE legislature) to pass a state law to save the light poles. The neighborhood would not have the charm that is so attractive to so many without the globe light poles that anchor our flower baskets. The most memorable part of the evening was dur- ing the Q&A after Jim’s presentation when a neighbor I did not recognize stood up and said “Can you imagine how valuable and meaningful this would be to someone who just moved from out of state to Dundee and knew very little of this wonderful history? That person is me and I thank you very much.” It was a pretty special moment. Continued on page 4

We had a wonderful turnout at the March DMPA neigh-borhood meeting. Jim McGee, long-time resident and ForgottenOmaha (Facebook page) contributor, presented a brief history ofDundee. Neighbors packed the meeting to watch Jim present a 96page powerpoint that he flew through in just under 45 minutes. Most could hardly keep up with all the wonderful stories, photos, and facts that he so easily rattled off without even a notecard. Jimwas blessed to have some longstanding neighbors in attendance andit was wonderful to watch them help him close the gap on anydetails that he was unclear about. When the lifelong neighborhoodvolunteers in the audience spoke you could hear a pin drop. Iwatched as my classmates from 40 years ago that have, and will, never leave the neighborhood scoot their chairs toward the titansof the neighborhood as they elaborated something Jim had men-tioned.

Lannie McNichols, fittingly, sat front and center. Many gardeners are itching to get out and plant in thevegetable garden, but think that they have to wait until May toget the ball rolling. However, many of the crops we grow in thevegetable garden are adapted to cooler weather and can handleand even thrive when they are planted earlier in the season. Many of these cool-season crops are tolerant of frost and evenlight freezes.

These cold hardy crops typically fall into two differentcamps, those that require higher soil temperatures to germinateand those that are fine germinating in colder soils. The cropsthat require warmer soil temperatures are ones that we need tostart indoors early, such as the Cole crops (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, etc). These are best started indoors just likeyour tomatoes and peppers, but usually are started very early inthe year (January/February) since they can be planted outsideearlier.

The crops that tolerate colder soil temperatures forgermination (between 40 and 50 degrees) are things like peas, spinach, other leafy greens, carrots, turnips, and beets. Thesecan be directly sown out in the garden as soon as the soil reach-

es those temperatures. Luckily, we have a tool to help you planwhen to plant. GretnaWX.net is a weather station that lists thesoil temperature in the area. For the optimum germinationtemperatures for a majority of crops, check outhttp://bit.ly/2zR5HLt

As for the warm season crops such as tomatoes, pep-pers, cucumbers, and more, you can start planting them afterthe danger of frost has passed. The last frost date for our areais around May 12. You can sometimes push the date back a fewweeks by using some sort of protective cover like a cloche, rowcover, or low tunnel.

One thing to keep in mind is that all those cool sea-son plants that you can plant in the spring can also be plantedagain in the fall. In fact, they often do better because they ger-minate when it is warmer then thrive as the temperatures cooldown again in the fall. You can often plant them in August orearly September for a fall harvest. You can also use those pro-tective covers to extend their harvest even further.
