Dear friends,

Of all the shows in this season’s Willis Broadway Series, perhaps the most anticipated is Kinky Boots. Winner of six 2013 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, this production boasts a “dream” creative team.

Director/choreographer Jerry Mitchell was last represented here with his staging of Legally Blonde. Book-writer Harvey Fierstein penned the shows La Cage Aux Folles and

Hairspray, and Grammy Award winner Cyndi Lauper made history with Kinky Boots as the first solo woman ever to receive the Tony Award for Best Score.

Based on a true story and the subsequent 2005 film of the same name, Kinky Boots is still one of the hottest shows on Broadway and on national tour. I saw the show pre-Broadway in Chicago and then attended the opening night in New York, and I loved it. In addition to being very entertaining, the show deals with real-life issues like the intricacies of father/son relationships and accepting others for who they are.

Kinky Boots is the second of three shows we are presenting this season in which Des Moines Performing Arts has an investment in both the Broadway and national touring productions through our involvement in the Independent Presenters Network (IPN). The IPN is a consortium of leading Broadway presenters from all parts of the country, and the group regularly invests in Broadway productions. We are especially pleased to be working again with Hal Luftig, one of the lead producers of Kinky Boots, as the IPN has previously partnered with him on such shows as Thoroughly Modern Millie and Legally Blonde.

The Des Moines Civic Center is the home of the Willis Broadway Series, and we are proud to bring you the very best of Broadway direct from New York.

Now, enjoy the show, and… “Everybody Say Yeah”!

Dear friends,

Welcome! We are so pleased that you are with us.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, please accept our sincere thanks to our Willis Broadway Series Season Ticket Holders and Donors. Your interest, patronage and generosity build the foundation for all we do.

Des Moines Performing Arts is the non-profit organization that operates the Des Moines Civic Center, Stoner Theater, Temple Theater and Cowles Commons. At these venues, you will find an extensive range of high-quality live, professional performing arts.

The world’s top dance companies perform in The Dance Series. The Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield Family Series offers an ideal introduction to theater and the arts for families and children. The Prairie Meadows Temple Comedy Series brings laughs and creative theater performances to the Temple Theater, a space that is also the home to the Prairie Meadows Live at the Temple Concert Series.

Des Moines Performing Arts also offers highly impactful educational programs. The Applause Series offers $1 tickets to every one of the more than 55,000 students and teachers who come to its performances annually. Professional development programs provide teachers with new strategies for the classroom. And, I hope you will mark your calendar for June 1, 2015, when we celebrate the work of Iowa’s talented young people and their committed instructors at the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase.

All of these programs require donations to operate successfully. I invite you to join us in our mission by becoming a Donor. Your gift will impact many, as will the opportunities for you to explore everything that is Des Moines Performing Arts.

To learn more about attending any of our performances or making a donation, please visit DesMoinesPerformingArts.org or call (515) 246-2300.

Enjoy the show!

KINKY BOOTS National Tour company. Photo by Matthew Murphy.

“Because we’re all different,

we brought in what we know and we all worked together to make it right – to make you laugh and cry,” says Lauper. “Harvey is such a good storyteller and so is Jerry. They have a lot of heart and I feel very blessed to be among them.”

Based on an independent film inspired by true events, Kinky Boots tells the story of Charlie, the owner of a failing English shoe factory, teaming up with Lola, a drag artist, to serve a niche market – making sturdy boots for cross-dressers. But a successful Broadway show – and, make no mistake, Kinky Boots is a huge hit – is anything but a niche market – it needs to speak to a wide and diverse audience. Jerry Mitchell says he knew the musical would speak to a lot of people, the moment he watched the film. “I got very emotionally caught up in the story of the fathers and the sons,” he says. “And I thought, ‘well that to me is the nucleus of something really strong,’ because it’s a universal idea for us: how do we measure up in our fathers’ eyes?”

That’s certainly the way producer Daryl Roth felt when she first saw the film at Sundance in 2006. Within a year, she had optioned the musical rights and brought producer Hal Luftig on board. The two enlisted not only Mitchell, but playwright Harvey Fierstein, who says he was attracted to the intimate story at the center; the “bromance” between Charlie and Lola, a.k.a. Simon. “The real love story here is these two gentlemen who become friends,” says Fierstein, who then

called Lauper, who was equally enthusiastic.

Cyndi Lauper, who grew up listening to Rodgers and Hammerstein cast albums, took to writing for characters and dramatic situations, like a duck to water. “Everybody asks the question about pop songs and theater songs,” she says. “I just think that, in some ways, they’re very similar;

and in other ways, they’re not. You need to be economical; you have to say something simply. And you have to have your story – a beginning, middle and end – because if the song goes nowhere, well, what are you talking about?”

Harvey Fierstein, a veteran of several musicals, including the smash hit La Cage aux Folles, which lauched its national tour in Des Moines in October 2011, gave Lauper an education in writing for the theater. In particular, he showed Lauper how to weave music and dialogue effectively, something she resisted at first. Fierstein told her, “when it’s done right, you will never notice, but the show must move on.”

Although the show is mostly set in the workaday world of a shoe factory, the dream team wanted to create a sense of joy and uplift for the audience, in the way only a Broadway musical can do. The show’s final number, “Raise You Up,” literally does that to the audience every night. “They’re standing up, cheering, dancing and singing,” says Jerry Mitchell. “And they don’t want to leave the theater! That’s sort of a magical moment. And then, when they do walk out of the theater, you know, they’re all abuzz. That’s the kind of joy that is rare in a musical.”

Kinky Boots, the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, was created by a dream team of talented and original artists; pop icon Cyndi Lauper, who won a Tony for her infectious score, three-time Tony-winning librettist Harvey Fierstein, and director/choreographer Jerry Mitchell, who also took home a Tony for his dances.

DES MOINES PERFORMING ARTS IN THE SPOTLIGHT

QWhat attracted you to Des Moines and working for what was formerly the Civic Center of

Greater Des Moines?

My predecessor, Gordon Smith, was retiring in 1994. As a favor, he asked if I would just consider applying for his position, so I submitted a résumé. I was happy in my job at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg, FL, but through the interview process, I decided this was something to go after. I thought the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines was underutilized and there was a lot of potential to grow. It was also nice because I’m from Iowa (Belmond) and my family lives here.

QYou’ve accomplished so much in your tenure at Des Moines Performing Arts. What are some of

your proudest accomplishments?

Creating the Betts Broadway Series, now the Willis Broadway Series, in 1997 and watching its success has been great. Prior to that, every Broadway show was sold individually. It’s been a thrill watching the growth and impact of our education and community engagement outreach, like what we do with the Applause Series and the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards. And finally, I would say being involved in the creation of the Temple Theater in the Temple for Performing Arts Building. The opening of that building dramatically changed that end of downtown Des Moines. We were the real pioneers there.

In January 1995, Jeff Chelesvig started a role that would forever change the

landscape of performing arts in Iowa, as he took the helm at the Civic Center

of Greater Des Moines. He started a legacy that would include the implementation and programming of the popular Willis Broadway Series and six other series, leading the creation of the Temple Theater, and building a reputation of Des Moines being a sought after tour stop in the arts and

entertainment industry.

Twenty years later, we asked Jeff, President & CEO of Des Moines Performing Arts,

to reflect on his successful tenure and what he would like

support and ticket buyers. I think the guiding light in what we do is aspiring to have the best people involved – the artists, staff, production, etc. If we present quality shows and do so in a quality way, people will come.

QHow has your involvement in the Broadway industry positively

impacted Des Moines Performing Arts?

You can be involved in a lot of arts organizations in our industry, but early in my tenure, I chose to take on a leadership role with The Broadway League and spend a lot of time in New York City cultivating relationships. That has served us well. I think Des Moines has a huge amount of respect in the Broadway community – sometimes we think of ourselves in too small of terms. The fact that we get these shows early on, year after year, is because we do great work and have great audiences.

I think the other component was creating a fund to invest in Broadway shows. This entrepreneurial spirit turned us from being a buyer to having a stake in shows.

QHow has Des Moines Performing Arts changed from when you first started

in 1995?

Our guests’ expectations have changed in terms of the level of quality – not only in the service they get, but the shows we present and the operation of our facilities. That’s good because it’s caused us to invest in our people, our operations and our buildings. It’s allowed us to say, “we want to hire quality people” and we’ve doubled our staff since the time I’ve been here.

Our programming has also changed considerably. When I first started, we were more a of rental venue, which means promoters would rent space from us and we didn’t have any risk. Today, we are more of a presenting organization, which means we are taking on more risk when we bring in a show.

QWhat would you like to accomplish in the future?

I want to continue to grow our education and community outreach programs, which means we’re going to need more space. We’re bursting at the seams to do master classes, Q&As, etc. I also want to find ways to increase our use of the Temple Theater – I consider the space a jewel and a great place to see a live concert or show.

1995 Jeff joins the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines; national tour of State Fair opens at the Des Moines Civic Center.

1996 The Applause Series for schools launches. 15,000 students and teachers attend the first season.

1997 The Phantom of the Opera’s record-breaking five-week run puts Des Moines on the Broadway map. More than 98,000 people attend the show.

1997/98 The first Broadway subscription series is offered.

2001 The national tour of The Music Man opens at the Civic Center.

2002 Des Moines Performing Arts opens Triple Espresso – A Highly Caffeinated Comedy at the Temple Theater.

2004 Triple Espresso – A Highly Caffeinated Comedy closes as Iowa’s longest-running show. The show’s first run was on stage for 16 months (68 weeks) and more than 88,000 people attended.

2005 · Jeff receives The Broadway League’s Samuel J. L’Hommedieu Award in New York for Outstanding Achievement in Presenter Management.

· Betts Auto Campus becomes the Broadway Series presenting sponsor. It’s now the Willis Broadway Series.

2006 Disney’s The Lion King’s six-week run attracts more than 113,000 people to the Civic Center.

2008 The national tour of Frost/Nixon opens at the Civic Center.

2009 · The Wellmark Family Series launches. · Wicked’s five-week run attracts more than 83,000

patrons to the Civic Center.

2010 The Dance Series launches.

2011 The national tour of LaCage aux Folles opens at the Civic Center.

2013 · The Civic Center of Greater Des Moines refreshes its brand and the organization becomes Des Moines Performing Arts.

· The Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards program launches. · Cowles Commons construction begins.

· Applause Series attendance surpasses 50,000 student attendees.

2015 Cowles Commons scheduled to open in the spring.
