Dear friends,

Made on a budget of just $5 million, the film Dirty Dancing was a juggernaut. The movie grossed over $215 million worldwide since its release in 1987, and it was the first film to sell over one million copies on VHS (remember VHS?). Two multi-platinum albums of the movie’s soundtrack sold over 44 million copies combined, and the film’s signature tune, “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” won an Academy Award® for Best Original Song.

In 2001, Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story On Stage began as an eight-week workshop in New York City before receiving its first full production in Sydney, Australia in 2004 and touring Australia and New Zealand for 18 months. Following this tour was the much-anticipated London production, which opened at the Aldwych Theatre in the West End in October 2006 and ran for five years. Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story On Stage is currently touring the US, and we are pleased to present the show as the first production in the 2015-2016 Willis Broadway Series at the Des Moines Civic Center.

Set in the summer of 1963, Dirty Dancing is the story of 17-year-old Frances “Baby” Houseman, who vacations with her family at a Catskills resort in upstate New York, and her life-changing relationship with the resort’s dance instructor, Johnny Castle. The musical features all of the iconic music from the film, plus more than 25 new songs.

And, get ready to be awestruck with The Illusionists - Live From Broadway. Featuring some of the world’s most incredible illusionists, we’re thrilled to present this show here at the Civic Center before the production re-appears on Broadway for another magical holiday engagement.

Thank you for being loyal season ticket holders for the Willis Broadway Series. We hope you enjoy Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story On Stage and The Illusionists – Live From Broadway.

Dear friends,

Welcome! We are so pleased that you are with us. On behalf of the Board of Directors, please accept our sincere thanks to our Willis Broadway Series Season Ticket Holders and Donors. Your interest, patronage and generosity build the foundation for all we do.

Des Moines Performing Arts is the non-profit organization that operates the Des Moines Civic Center, Stoner Theater,

Temple Theater and the newly renovated outdoor space, Cowles Commons. At these venues, you will find an extensive range of high-quality live, professional performing arts.

The world’s top dance companies perform in The Dance Series. The Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield Family Series offers an ideal introduction to theater and the arts for families and children. The Prairie Meadows Temple Comedy Series brings laughs and creative theater performances to the Temple Theater, a space that is also the home to the Prairie Meadows Live at the Temple Concert Series.

Des Moines Performing Arts also offers highly impactful educational programs. The Applause Series offers $1 tickets to every one of the more than 55,000 students and teachers who come to its performances annually. Professional development programs provide educators with new strategies for the classroom. And, the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards celebrate the work of Iowa’s talented young people and their committed instructors.

All of these programs require donations to operate successfully. I invite you to join us in our mission by becoming a Donor. Your gift will impact many, as will the opportunities for you to explore everything that is Des Moines Performing Arts.

To learn more about attending any of our performances or making a donation, please visit DesMoinesPerformingArts.org or call (515) 246-2300.

Enjoy the show!

ELEANOR BERGSTEIN (Writer) is a novelist, screenwriter, producer and director. Her stories have been published in national magazines, ranging from Transatlantic Review to Redbook and Cosmopolitan. Her first novel, Advancing Paul Newman, about women and politics in the 1960s, was published by the Viking Press, and her first movie script was It’s My Turn, starring Jill Clayburgh and Michael Douglas. Her second novel, Ex-Lover, about sexual obsession, was published by Random House. She has worked on a variety of film projects, including the final script revision of Sister Act. She then wrote and directed Let It Be Me, which starred Campbell Scott, Jennifer Beals, Leslie Caron and Patrick Stewart. Her most famous project was one of the most successful independent films of all time, Dirty Dancing. It was the unique continuing response to the story over the years that made her decide to reimagine Dirty Dancing as a stage event. The multiple viewings by audiences all over the world made her suspect that what the audiences really wanted was to be more physically involved in the story. This would mean that its ultimate form should be one that combined dance and story and music onstage in a new way. It was also her chance to add new scenes not in the movie, as well as songs she had wanted for the movie and been unable to obtain. Ms. Bergstein, through her company Magic Hour Productions, is at work on a new stage musical set in London in the late 1960s, a new work of fiction, and preparing a film to be shot in Rome as well as film to be shot in Slovenia.

ANDREW BASSO (The Escapologist) is Italy’s star escape artist and is fast becoming one of the world’s favorite illusionists. His hero is Harry Houdini and his thrilling escapes take place under water, 150 feet in the air and everywhere in between. Explosives, water boxes, handcuffs, chains, padlocks, straightjackets, cars bursting into flames... his escapes place him within seconds of life and death and have audiences all over the world frozen in suspense and disbelief. You’ll never catch The Escapologist. He is definitively born to escape. www.AndrewBasso.com

BEN BLAQUE (The Weapon Master) Born and raised in the mid-west of Missouri. Ben Blaque was introduced to magic, variety acts and live performance when he accepted a job working as a stage tech for the Kirby Vanburch show in Branson, Misssouri. It didn’t take him long to fall in love with magic and illusions and the live stage shows that he wanted to create an act for himself. As Protege to Kirby, they both decided to start with the crossbow act. Kirby made a deal with Ben if he learned the act that he would feature him in his show as a special variety act. After 6 years of performing in the Kirby VanBurch show and establishing himself in the crossbow performing world. He moved on to perform all over the United States, many beautiful countries and live TV shows including season 7 of Americas got Talent, and NBC 2015 show “I Can Do That”.

JONATHAN GOODWIN (The Daredevil) British born Stunt performer and Escape Artist Jonathan, is widely considered the greatest theatrical daredevil in the world. Goodwin has been hanged, buried alive, hung by his toes from helicopters, burned at the stake, attacked by sharks, and bitten by rattlesnakes to name just a few of his terrifying and insane stunts. Goodwin has been called “the closest thing this planet boasts to a real life superhero”, He is an accomplished knife thrower, archer, escape artist, fakir, martial artist, free diver, aerialist, and rock climber. Unlike the other performers in the show, Jonathan is not a magician or illusionist and everything you see him do is very very real. www.Jonathan-Goodwin.com Twitter:@Dangerman

JEFF HOBSON (The Trickster) is an actor, comedian, magician, and the only natural blond in the show. He’s been known as “the host of Las Vegas” for more than 15 years and is the epitome of glamour and showmanship. A veteran of more than 20,000 live performances around the globe, Jeff leaves audiences laughing long after the curtain goes down. Don’t be fooled by his innocent appearance - The Trickster will get you every time. www.JeffHobson.com

YU HO-JIN (The Manipulator) Through elegant manipulation and mystery, the artistic Yu Ho-Jin has

the ability to turn anyone into a loyal fan, whether children and parents or his colleagues - the world’s finest magicians. Yu was recently named Magician of the Year (2014) by the Academy of Magical Arts (AMA). Yu would go on to win numerous magic competitions with his emotional performances. At age 19, he took first prize in the manipulation category and was the Grand Prix Winner in stage magic at Federation Internationale des Societes Magiques (FISM), a competition that is considered the Olympic games for magicians. Now you see it, now you don’t - meet The Manipulator.

KEVIN JAMES (The Inventor) is one of today’s most ground breaking and innovative illusionists. Some of his ideas have made it into the shows of Penn & Teller, David Copperfield and Doug Henning. He is an inventor and collector of the strange and unusual. Performing on Broadway is a highlight of his career, right next to his performance at the White House. Kevin believes he has a solemn responsibility to remind people of that important sense wonder they felt as a child. Whether he’s holding a rose or swinging a chain saw, anything is possible with The Inventor.

DAN SPERRY (The Anti-Conjuror) With millions of hits on YouTube and hundreds of thousands of loyal online followers, Dan Sperry the Anti-Conjuror has become a social media phenomenon and one of the most sought after live performers working today. His totally unique style of shock illusion initially captured the imagination of his fans, it is his hilariously eccentric and shocking routines that have grown his popularity across the globe. From headlining sell-out tours to guest starring on popular TV shows, Dan Sperry blends a bizarre mixture of comedy magic and mayhem into an utterly original performance that is as unique as it is entertaining.

AMANDA ESPOSITO (Magic Assistant) is thrilled to be joining the cast of The Illusionists for her first national tour. She has danced with Ballet Hispanico 2 (BHdos) and Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company, and has performed works by Robert Battle, William Forsythe, Ray Mercer, David Parsons, Pedro Ruiz, Matthew Rushing, Paul Taylor, Eduardo Vilaro, William Whitener, and others. Both are bred musicians: Moore’s mother toured as a rock/funk band-leader in the 1970’s; Eddie is the great-nephew to Nat ‘King’ Cole. Their multitude of influences result in a self-designated sub-genre of Galaxy Music, encompassing elements of glo-fi, underground hip-hop, experimental electropop, and vintage jazz-rock.

ASIA LIVE NETWORK (Producer). Asia Live Network owns and operates the interests of producers Simon Painter and Tim Lawson, who began collaborating in 2007 on Le Grand Cirque at the Sydney Opera House. The show broke all box office records in the history of the iconic venue and led to multiple international

productions. They repeated the critical and box office success over the coming years with Aerial Dreams and Adrenaline, again launching at the Sydney Opera House followed by extensive touring through Australasia and beyond. Recognizing the absence in the market of a high-quality touring magic show, the company created a production showcasing seven of the world’s best magicians, The Illusionists — Witness the Impossible. The show sold out its Sydney Opera House season before opening, a pattern that would follow throughout arenas and theatres in more than 50 cities in 15 countries within its first two years. The London season was filmed live and aired throughout the UK and is available on DVD. Following the show’s unprecedented success, The Illusionists 2.0 — The Next Generation of Magic, was created to cater to the demand for a sequel, and a brand new show, The Illusionists 1903 — The Golden Age of Magic, premieres in Australia in early January. During this time, their critically acclaimed production, Le Noir — The Dark Side of Cirque, has been setting imaginations and box office records on fire. Each venue it plays around the world, ranging from 500 to 15,000, is transformed like never before, so audiences experience the jaw-dropping, daredevil talents of the world’s finest circus artists and acrobats in the round, up close and personal.

A Sensational Summer at Des Moines Performing Arts

52

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

5756

Des Moines Performing Arts is known for presenting world-class productions, but we also spearhead an eclectic mix of projects, events and initiatives.

This summer was no exception, as Des Moines Performing Arts celebrated an

opening of a very special space, hosted a Tony Award®-winning composer at Yankee

Doodle Pops and hammered our way through a two-phase renovation project at the Des Moines Civic Center. Plus, the Education Team used their improvisational skills for summer theater camps!

Cowles Commons Opens to the PublicCowles Commons, the newly renovated outdoor space across the street from the Civic Center, opened to the public in June. Since then, kids and adults alike have splashed in the Lauridsen Fountain, walked through the Peace Garden and enjoyed community events, like Downtown Community Yoga, National Night Out and the Belin Quartet.

The final component of the Cowles Commons renovation project is the installation of the suspended, illuminated LED lights sculpture by San Francisco-based artist Jim Campbell, which will take place this fall.

Jason Robert Brown Conducts at Yankee Doodle PopsOn Thursday, July 2, Des Moines Performing Arts and the Des Moines Symphony hosted three-time Tony Award®-winning composer Jason Robert Brown at the Des Moines Symphony’s 22nd annual Yankee Doodle Pops, Iowa’s largest single-day concert event on the Iowa State Capitol’s West Terrace. More than 100,000 concert goers watched Brown conduct the Orchestra and soloists Christiane Noll and Hugh Panaro in selections from Broadway’s The Bridges of Madison County, for which he wrote the music, lyrics and orchestrations.

The Bridges of Madison County, winner of the 2014 Tony Award for Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations, is famously set in Iowa and will launch its national tour at the Civic Center Nov. 28 – Dec. 5, 2015.

Making Beautiful MusicDes Moines Performing Arts and the Des Moines Symphony have partnered on a two-phase acoustical project that will create a more balanced, pleasing and exciting acoustical experience for all audiences at the Civic Center.

The first phase of the project started in June and wrapped up this month with the installation of a new Orchestra Shell, the movable walls and ceiling that surround the Orchestra at the Des Moines Symphony concerts. You’ll notice the beautiful natural maple finish immediately, and you’ll hear the effect of the stiff but lightweight honeycomb panels behind the wood.

The new Orchestra Shell is designed to project sound more robustly and evenly, especially at low frequencies (It’s all about the bass!). The Orchestra Shell also improves hearing conditions on stage, so the musicians can focus on making beautiful music.

Additionally, treatments at the side walls and rear wall of the Civic Center provide a clearer, more enveloping sound for the audience.

The second phase of the project begins next summer when the height of the proscenium arch is increased and the plaster “eyebrow” over the forestage is reshaped. These changes will provide an even more robust and exciting sound for the audience.

The Camps Must Go OnSince the Civic Center was a construction zone due to the Orchestra Shell installation, Des Moines Performing Arts’ Education Team had to move their location of this season’s summer theater camps. They improvised by offering three camps at a variety of locations in the Des Moines area – DanzArts Studio, the Temple Theater and Grand View University. A total of 87 campers experienced 10-Minute Plays, the STAGEright Broadway Experience and Aladdin summer theater camps.

Cowles Commons was a multi-year, $12 million renovation project led by Des Moines Performing Arts, who also operates the space.

Composer Jason Robert Brown conducted selections from The Bridges of Madison County at Yankee Doodle Pops which were “To Build a Home,” “It All Fades Away” and “One Second and a Million Miles.”
