City of Burnabymaintains strongtieswith the Asia-Pacific region
The Burnaby Board of Trade’s 2012City Council Reception last monthprovided BBOT members with a uniqueopportunity to meet and connect withBurnaby City Council, Burnaby SchoolTrustees, and even Mayor Derek Corrig-an himself. The event, held at the DeltaBurnaby Hotel and Conference Centre,also provided an opportunity for theBBOT to honour their extensive list ofcommittee volunteers by presenting themwith Certificates of Appreciation and aphoto opportunity with the mayor.
In his 2012 outlook, Corriganheaped praise on the Burnaby businesscommunity that has flourished despitetough economic conditions. He specifi-cally acknowledged companies suchas Telus, Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers,and Simon Fraser University for beinganchors in the community that haveencouraged sector growth and allowedthe city to become the business hub it is
recognized as today.The mayor also commented on the
unique relationship the City of Burnabyenjoys with the Burnaby Board of Trade.“In Burnaby we have a Board of Tradethat stretches itself to ask not only what’sgood for business, but what’s good for thecommunity as a whole,” said Corrigan.
“Helping to grow a strong andvibrant community is a major part of ourtriple bottom line commitment, and anabsolute necessity in fostering a thrivingbusiness environment,” added BBOTPresident and CEO, Paul Holden after theevent. “What’s good for the communityas a whole is equally beneficial forbusiness owners and employees who areproud to call Burnaby home.”
Also speaking at the reception wasBurnaby Board of Education Chair,Larry Hayes, whose outlook includedcomments on community growth, newand expanding programs, and recentrecognition for a program servingchildren of imprisoned Tamil womenawaiting immigration hearings.

Lunar New, 1 Corrigan also indicated thatCity Council will continue to foster itsstrong ties in the Asia-Pacific with plansto visit China later this year.
The BBOT thanks the PacificGateway Committee for their involve-ment in the planning of the Lunar NewYear celebration. The Pacific GatewayCommittee facilitates connectionsbetween the Burnaby business communi-ty and industries in the Asia-Pacificregion, and pursues opportunities tocreate a more ethnically integratedbusiness community. The Committeefurther identifies priority issues relatingto trade, investment, education, andcultural exchanges between the BurnabyBoard of Trade, the business communityand the Asia-Pacific region.
