“When I was 10 years old I began sketches of the island I one day might buy. From the gestation of that idea to its fruition when my business law firm took off, I spent some time observing islands in order to pick the location which would suit me best. Cocos is a beautiful haven of huge ancient trees, surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. Its warmth and the stability of both the Panama and US dol-lar currency made it even more attractive. For me, part of owning Cocos is about the preservation of nature and rainforest which is why questions about

development and making money from the island seem so alien and wrong. The island has taught me many additional skills including survival, gathering drinking water, cooking outside and building fires, etc. I like being active all day, exploring the rainforest, swim-ming and then sleeping long and hard at night. I visit my island regularly sometimes with my five children. We camp. I like silence, being alone, being close to nature, rising with the sun and cooking over an open fire. I explore the rainforest, swim in the sea and regularly hunt for the reputed buried treasure.”

Taprobane Island | Sri LankaOccupying a tiny island just off Sri Lanka, this light, airy villa was built in the 1920s by the eccentric tea magnate, Count de Mauny. Subsequently home to a host of literary luminaries, this extraordinary villa is nothing short of a traveller’s dream. Sanda Island | ScotlandOur next island hop takes us across the North Sea to Scotland, just off the shores of the Mull of Kintyre. Home to a farm, a public house and even a picturesque lighthouse, this rural retreat is perfect for watching the ever-changing coastal scenery. Remote, yet close to the main land, Glasgow Airport is less than an hour away by helicopter. Throughout August, however, we recommend extending your journey on to the Scottish capital, affording you the perfect op-portunity to discover the Edinburgh Festival. The best place to catch a glimpse of Britain’s best up-and-coming comedians, a trip to the famous Fringe will have you laughing all the way into September.

Owned by a Swedish family and a property de-veloper, Sanda has recently undergone an impressive transformation that has brought the island into the 21st century whilst still retaining its unique rustic charm.
