Will the lake rise more ? Will tourism grow, stagnate or go down ? Will the religious fa- natics make this place an alcohol free town or will we continue to be a cool party place? Will tourist spent their days in their hotel rooms connected to Facebook or will they go out and meet people and do activities ? Will the economy go so bad that backpack- ers will stay home because they cant find a job or will they leave the rat race and join us in living an alternative lifestyle ? Will Guatemala get a grip on the rising vio- lence or will “Mano Dura” win the war on organized crime ? The person that can answer these questions would be a millionaire. Unfortunately, the only thing we can do is to try to survive in this slow economy, try to give the customer a good service, so they talk positively about San Pedro, come back or even choose it as there home. All the problems mentioned above are actu- ally not too damaging of our lifestyle, for now. We know San Pedro is not perfect, but yes, to us, it is still paradise. We hope you will like your stay in San Pe- dro. Don’t forget it takes more than a day to understand its charm. And if you like it, please tell the people you meet while travel- ling. So many other destination are creating a bad reputation for San Pedro to try to keep the customer in there town. Only you can change that by telling other travellers you meet how much you liked your stay in San Pedro. If you do, I am ready to bet we will overcome the economic crisis and be here and evolving to offer even more services to receive the persons you send our way. Thanks for helping. Viva San Pedro ! On of the most original souvenir you can bring home from San Pedro is a Mayan style painting. But you don’t have to pick one on the wall of a gallery. Just paint your own. Gaspar, a local artist has decided that teaching you how to paint in the local style was his challenge. For an hour or for a couple of weeks, he will provide you with the secret techniques that makes Mayan paint-ing so distinctive. (Gaspar : 4521-0895. Located be-side Hotel Paraïso)

See you Sunday at noon

for the BBQ !

Sure, you’ll here some horror stories about lands that were bought from an owner that wasn’t the real owner. It happens. But don’t get scared, most transaction are completely legit. Buying a land in San Pedro is legal even only if you have a tourist visa. You don’t have to be a resident to be a land owner. The first thing to check, is that the paperwork of the land are in order. First thing to do is to check with a lawyer of your choice. If the lawyer knows the family of the sellers, it’s even better. Secondly, ask the neighbors of the land you want to purchase if they know the owner and if there is any problem with the land. Most of the times, the neighbor knows about any dispute about the land next door. Be careful with any piece of land that is closer than 200 meters from the lake. Everyone will tell you it’s OK to buy it, but in fact, some laws applies to those lands and you may end up having limited ownership if the govern-ment decide to enforce them. Obviously, the other reason to stay away from the lake is that the level is on the rise. Many Gringos and Locals

are learning this right now at great cost. This lake has no outlet, so the lake can rise many vertical meter more. So it seems best to avoid that risk. The land you buy can be register or not. But if it isn’t you wont be able to register it in your name. Only citi-

zen of Guatemala are aloud registering a land in the official cadastre. But it doesn’t mean you cant le-gally own a land, it only mean it’s a public deed and is not reg-ister. No big deal. To find witch lands are for sale, you have to make contact with some local guides that are the unofficial real estate agent.

Sure they will take some commission, isn’t it normal ?

Two of the most famous person to help you for that are Samuel Cumatz, otherwise touristic guide and Chico, otherwise farmer. If you need to reach them, come to La Piscina San Pedro to get there phone number. Owning a land in this little paradise is wonderful. Make sure you take all the logical steps for the adventure to be a positive experience not a nightmare.

Friday, the 25th of may was the Rising Minds Punk Party at El Barrio. This party was also the farewell to Charlie and Matty who are soon leaving us for the north. It started slow. But it didn’t take long for the fiesta to switch to sec-ond gear. With the help of live Mu-sic and Karl D.J.’s work, the place turn nuts, The bar was invaded by some who couldn’t stay quietly on the dance floor. Some even accidentally (...), lost part of their clothes in the night where up to 3 stripteases were reported... It was

a night to remember. So to make sure we don’t forger, here some pictures of the craziness.
