Research Aims The “ UK National Research Report” to focus on best

practices analysed at National level and the examples of methodologies based on “video” education as a form of therapy

The Research Phase of the VISTA European partnership project is to gather research studies in the field of Participatory Video (PV) to give an overview of its use in the United Kingdom

In researching:

The overview of the use of (PV) in the UK will summarise research studies and the experiences realised on the modern use of Participatory Video (PV) methodologies for adult education and social inclusion.

! This overview will further verify the strengths and weaknesses of the video methodologies with a conclusion of different approaches adopted and mainly, the results achieved, according to the different typologies of target groups.

Project Aims

Conduct an Audio-Video Interview with experts in the use of Participatory Video as a form of Education/Therapy

To gather information on the use of PV in the UK, HP-MOS liased with experts in the field.

Conduct PV workshops to empower marginalised and disadvantaged com- munities through video methodology.

To equip communities with hands-on skills/techniques and practical steps for initiating Participatory Video process

To provide communities with an oppor- tunity to reflect on issues relevant to their experiences

Results

UKNationalReport

Twenty four research studies and applications of PV in the UK were identified and are mainly concerned with the empowerment of marginalised individuals who are socially excluded due to their social, physical or mental health issues.

At present, research in the UK has mostly been carried out by academic institutions such as universities, schools and research institutes with diverse target groups

The outcome of the UK report findings of the use of PV has been mostly positive. Many authors adopted a qualitative method and described individualsʼ experiences, context and processes that led to the outcome

SWOT AnalysisSWOT analyses of the twenty four studies

show that the application of PV in the UK improves participative communication and facilitates learning, providing a scope for understanding participantsʼ experience. However, it suffers from the high cost and possible difficulties in its implementation. Using PV also has issues of ethics; and its usability and validity in its effectiveness are still questionable. There are very few research papers or outcome evaluation studies to show measurable impact of the intervention

Results of UK Video InterviewThe use of Participatory Video

methodology requires a very skilful and well-trained facilitator

Requires careful selection of participants across the community that can represent the community with balanced power dynamics within the participants

Requires careful application of specific video methodology to suit specific situations, so participants can feel safe and able to open up and reflect upon their stories

Requires that participants have full control, either to delete or to use their video recorded stories for any therapeutic purposes

The facilitator has to be very confident and skilful in supporting participants

Health Psychology Management Organisation Services (HP-MOS) is a community-based health psychology charity whose aim it is to identify and support marginalised and disadvantaged "hard-to-reach" adults, children and young people with long term mental and physical health conditions within different community settings to improve their quality of life.
