Vista, the 3-day long
annual business fest of
IIM Bangalore, came to
a close today at Indiasbest management insti-
tute. With Be the
Change as the theme,
Vista 2011 was an en-deavour to demolish the
established citadels of
management to bring
about a new breed of
thought leaders, leaders
who can think beyondthe established.
On 30th Sept, the busi-
ness fest began on asanctiied note amid
chants of pious mantras
and invocation to the
Almighty to lead fromdarkness to light, and
from ignorance to wis-
dom. The inaugurationceremony presided over
by the honourable direc-
tor of IIM Bangalore,
Prof Pankaj Chandra,
saw the participation of
keynote speakers of
the likes of Prof NSRamaswamy, the
founder of IIM Banga-
lore and a Padma Bhu-
shan awardee, MrBhaskar Bhat, the MD
of Titan and Mr Jaya Pra-
kash Narayan, political
leader and president, Lok
Satta Party. The speakers
exhorted the future busi-ness managers to become
agents of change by partici-pating in nation-building
while remaining true to
their individual goals.
The opening address was
just an indication of the
intellectual capital on offerat the premier manage-
ment institute. With TATA
group as the title spon-
sor, Vista 2011 provided
an opportunity to win priz-
es worth 13 Lacs across
a total of 32 events. Anerve-rattling battle of
boardrooms was playedout over the last 3 days as
students from across the
country battled for su-
premacy in events that
tested their prowess in
Finance, Strategy, Market-ing and Operations.

A lawyers protest at beingkicked out of a railway com-partment

night. A candlelight march byenraged citizens brought jus-tice
for Jessica Lal. Fasting byan individual has inspired In-dia to
fight corruption. Everyliving cell on the planet hasthe ability to
usher in a worldof change. If MohandasKaramchand Gandhi could doit,
if Anna Hazaare could do it,if Sabrina Lal could do it, then
why cant we?What we dontrealize is that every individualhas the
potential to make adifference to society. Changefollows the domino
effect. Achange by you will inspire oth-ers also to bring about
chang-es. Just like the flapping of a
butterflys wings can set off astorm in a faraway land, thesmall
changes that you bringabout will eventually (Page 2)(from page1)
make a big differ-ence elsewhere.
But the question is, are weconscious enough of our
re-sponsibilities to attempt thatchange?
History is full of examples where the initiative of oneman has
cataclysmicallychanged the face of the socie-ty. Where Leonardo da
Vinciand Martin Luther King,
brought about revolutions
with their thought, Socratesand Galileo were successful
inliterally changing the shape ofour planet. This is the day ofthe
individual, an individual
with the courage and gump-tion to look beyond what has
been perceived, with thestrength and conviction to

Vista, was enlivened bythe presence of some ofthe leading names
in In-dia. The Vista Conclavesaw people of the likes ofMohandas
Pai, JusticeSantosh Hedge, Nandi-ta Das and NarainKarthikeyan
participate
in an eclectic panel discus-sion on the leitmotif ofIndias
largest businessfest, Be the Change .Professor Rajeev Gow-da, the
chairman of PublicPolicy Centre at IIM Ban-galore played the
devilsadvocate to perfection,
bringing out the candidand intellectual from theaugust
guests.
Nandita Das in a straight-from-the heart talk,talked about her
journeyas a social worker, an ac-tivist and as a non-mainstream
actress. Sheexhorted the gathering tocontribute that one drop
in
the ocean and bring aboutthe change one wants tosee in the
world. As a path-
breaking artist herself, sheplaced great strength inthe power of
art to influ-ence the masses and re-
buffed the arrogance ofclass that the intellectual
display. A candid thought,indeed.
Unbridled honesty andperfect humility definedNarain
Karthikeyanstalk as he outlined his dif-ficult journey to the top
ofthe racing circles in F1.His is an identity defined
by racing and a life bysheer determination and
focus. As a way of paying back to the country andthe sport, the
youngachiever has initiated theNK Racing Academy thatis pioneering
a new breedof world champions. Truly,a way to be the change.

In consonance with the theme of Be theChange , Vista The annual
business fest of IIMBangalore began on a sanctified note amidchants
of pious mantras and invocation to the
Almighty to lead us from darkness to light, fromignorance to
wisdom. Four great people, fourgreat speakers and a million new
thoughts withpotential to inspire and lead the kingdom ofchange, is
what the inaugural ceremony of one of
Indias biggest business fests was about.
The ceremony presided over by the honourabledirector of IIMB,
Prof Pankaj Chandra saw theparticipation of keynote speakers of the
likes ofProf NS Ramaswamy, the founder of IIMB and aPadma Bhushan
awardee, Mr Bhaskar Bhatt,the MD of Titan and Mr JP Narayan,
Politicalleader and president, Lok Satta Party.
In his presidential address, Prof Pankaj Chan-dra talked with
optimism about the way he sawthe current happenings. While there
are voicesof change everywhere in the world, Indias

out of the moldand question, and withthe potency and atti-tude to
inspire change.No status quo, ladiesand gentlemen, is thecurrent
status quo.
With the rising sun ofglobalization, the
world has become asmaller place with eve-rything accessible
withthe blink of an eye. Yetthe globalised worldhas made us
ignoranttowards our social ob-ligations. While theFDIs continue to
flowinto a more privatizedIndia, the welfare state ideologyof the
constitution stands long
forgotten; what prevails highand mighty are the
exponentially
increasing number of farmer
suicides, uncontrollable prices ofgold and food and an
inexplica-
ble shortage of the latter.Education, social securityand
economic stability arefast becoming elite con-cepts, while
corruptionrules the roost in the cur-rent generation like never
before. In a country wit-nessing population explo-sion for the
past four dec-ades, the current state ofunemployment is
distress-ing. In such deprecatorycircumstances, the heavyfigures on
the GDP state-ment fail to impress.
But like every cloud has asilver lining, this one hasseveral.
NGOs and NPOs
sprawled across the length and breadth of the country are
put-
ting their heart and soul intouplifting the social standards
ofthe underprivileged. Educationincentives and
environmentalawareness are spreading like
wild fire. Nation- wide move-ments against corruption
andillegitimate misuse of powerhave gained momentum. India is
waking up from deep slumberand finally asking questions.
In a nation driven towards ma-turity and ruthlessness at thesame
time, the question to beasked is How can I contribute?and the
answer is In every way.The days of Messiahs purgingthe planet of
all evil are longgone, while a batman can saveGotham city only in
comic
books. This is the age of man. Asingle man can change thecourse
of the Universe. In the
current age of technological ad- vancement and receding
stand-ards of moral responsibility, it is
we, the educated and the privi-leged youth, who have to holdthe
baton in our hands andmarch fearlessly forth. So dont
wait for time to usher in thechange. Be the change. Throwaway
the blinkers that keep youon the narrow well-troddenpath. With this
perspective inmind, we at IIMB open our armsto one and all to
experience the
journey at Vista 2011. Vista2011 is a clarion call to all to
em-
brace change and make a differ-ence to the society. Be the
but-terfly that can flap its wings toglory, Be the change that
the
world demands of you.

pation from the elite business
schools of India like ISB (See
Page 2) Hyderabad, NITIE,
SJSOM (IIT B) and, of course,
IIM Bangalore. With veterans
like Mr. G Adanki, lead men-tor at Mentor Square, Mr.
Nagendra Satyam, and Mr.
Vasudeva Awadhani, an ex-
pert on clean energy, as thejudges, the students could not
have got a better platform to
showcase their entrepreneuri-
al ideas. Shell sponsored pub-
lic policy event ,Vidheyak, fo-
cussed on sustainable busi-ness, and was hugely appreci-
ated by all. Bizzare, the quiz-
zing event sponsored by Niel-
son and conducted by the acequiz-master Barry O Brien,
beckoned the best quizzers in
the country to reap the divi-
dends of their investment in
business knowledge.
On 1st Oct, the second day of
Vista 2011, over 120 students
participated with enthusiasm
in the Run for Change. Run
for Change highlighted the
commitment of the students tousher in change not just in the
business domain but also in
the moral, ethical, and cultural
ideals of society. Vista 2011demonstrated its commitment
to social change by contrib-
uting Rs 350 for every run-ner to the NGOs Samar-
thanam, Snehasadan, and
Seva-In-Action that are sup-
ported by IIM Bangalore, alongwith complementary T-shirts
and other merchandise.
The highlights of the business
fest were the Vista Conclave
and the CXO Conclave. Emi-nent personalities like Mr. Na-
rain Kartikeyan, Ms. Nandita
Das and Justice Santosh
Hegde, Mr Mohandas Paidiscussed pertinent socio-
economic issues during theVista Conclave. At the CXO
Conclave, leaders from Corpo-
rate India debated on the
transformation of India from a
low-cost outsourcing destina-
tion to a breeding ground for
innovation. The panel discus-sion on 'India: A story of
transformation' had IIM Ban-
galore alumni UpalChakraborty (CIO, DLF India
Ltd.), Avijit Bhattacharya
(CEO, Tata Securities Ltd.),
and Partha De Sarkar (CEO,
Hinduja Global Solutions)
share their experiences andthoughts on the success storyof
Corporate India.

itsdifficulties well. That is how he
believed, thought- leaders arecreated. In an inspiring speech,he
exhorted the audience to re-main true to individual roles
while dreaming of the countrysfuture. If only one exercises
hisright to reflective, to optimizegrowth can one be an agent
of
change.
The opening address was just anindication of the

left in a
reflective mode as Mr BhaskarBhat took them on a wonderful
journey trail of the TATAS. Aman well versed and experi-enced in
the nuances of indus-try, he talked about the need fordriving
change changing theshape and not the scope of anindustry and
leading changethrough the realms of innova-tion. Mr Bhat defined
the spiritthe best when he put mindshare and share of heart
overmarket share.
Mr JP Narayan brought about acitizens perspective into focus
ashe advocated maximizing per-sonal gains in order to maximize
societal growth. He placed theonus of nation building on
thegovt. while talking of the
abdication of the fine art of mo-rality prevalent in the
societytoday. A candid speech from thecitizens man.
None in the audience was per-haps prepared for what
ProfRamaswamy delivered. With his
wonderful knack of engaging theaudience through witty
manner-isms and candid observations,the national professor in his
in-
imitable way defied all dogmasof management, advocating
forinclusion of ethics, compassionand a will to live for
others.Brick by brick he demolished the
established citadels of manage-ment to bring about a new breedof
thought leaders, leaders whocan think beyond the establishedto make
management a divinedevice.
The ceremony got a befittingconclusion as the audience
joined the great man in singing ,

one person who has been a pre-cursor of change in many lives.For
someone who has been oneof the most prominent corpo-rate figures in
India, the switchto social activism was one driv-en by a desire to
add meaningto life. His work with the
Akshay Patra initiative haschanged the way lakhs at the
bottom-of-the-pyramid saweducation.He set the responsi-bilities
straight by saying that the privileged have a greatercalling.
The conclave was indeed made
richer in intellectual capital bythe presence of Justice
San-tosh Hegde. A frontrunner forthe cause of transparent
gov-ernance and elimination of cor-ruption in India, his is a
strug-gle marked by umpteen chal-lenges from forces that be. In
ahard hitting talk, he took on theland and mining mafia
andprevalent corruption and spokeabout his work as the Lokayuk-ta
of Karnataka. A man whostood firm in the face of forceand
resistance, he urged every-one to answer the call of dutyand be
true to ones self.
He summed the mood of the
conclave the best when he saidthat, Become what you want to
become in life but become ahuman being first.
Four great people, four greatthought leaders and a millionideas
for change, that was the
Vista Conclave, an eveningthat truly did succeed in initiat-ing
the change.
The battle of the boardrooms
reached an exciting inale today.After three days of intense
com-
petition, the winners of the lag-
ship events, TAS Excelsior andNumero Uno were declared.
The business fest culminatedwith the crowning of Altar
Vista-the overall champion.
