News from HOSAThis month in HOSA news, members traveled to the Region IX Fall Leadership Conference where they heard inspiring speeches given by representatives from the National Alliance on Mental Illness, HOSA’s National Service Project this year. Additionally, they voted on regional T-shirt designs and elected Regional Officers. Our own chapter secretary, Maddi Weech, ran as a candidate for Regional Secretary and subsequently won. Congratulations to Maddi and her momentous accomplishment! In other news, darkness stirred in the Park Vista Medical Academy building. On October 20th, the medical building was transformed into HOSA’s yearly “Haunted Hospital” haunted fundraiser. Visitors who came to this frightening experience were treated to a tour, pizza and drinks. “It was real enough for Georgie!” -Pennywise

DUAL ENROLLMENTThe dual enrollment program enables qualified students to enroll in approved courses offered through Palm Beach State College (PBSC) and Florida Atlantic University (FAU). The credits students earn count towards both a high school diploma and a college degree. In order to qualify for dual enrollment courses, students must currently have a 3.0 GPA, have completed 9th grade, and have college-ready test scores on either the SAT, ACT, CPT, or PERT, and have attended a Dual Enrollment Advisement Session at Palm Beach State. Students in grade 9 must have earned four (4) high school credits with at least a 3.0 GPA, two of which must be an English Language Arts course and a mathematics course. All other dual enrollment requirements must also be met. A student is limited to earning a maximum of 60 credit hours through dual enrollment and/or early admission. Please be aware that dual enrollment courses become a part of a student’s permanent college transcript and will impact eligibility for financial aid and admission to other post-secondary institutions. The amount of work necessary to succeed in college level courses may be much greater than in high school courses. Students need to consider future plans when deciding if dual enrollment is right for their situation. For more information, view the Dual Enrollment PowerPoint presentation on the Park Vista website under the Guidance tab.

ASVAB TESTParents...do you remember taking a test in high school that indicated you should be a doctor or an auto service technician or something else? That test was probably the ASVAB! We offered the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) on November 2nd. The ASVAB Career Exploration Program provides high quality, career exploration and planning materials at no cost to high school students throughout the country. The program encourages students to explore a wide variety of careers, rather than limiting their exploration by telling them what they can or should do. Schools receive a comprehensive career development program that meets the needs of today’s students, based on current career development theory and practice.
FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID (FAFSA)Seniors and parents of seniors! It is strongly recommended that all seniors apply and do so ASAP. It has been proven that students who apply early receive more in federal aid than those who apply later. Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov to begin the application.
AP / AICE / DUAL ENROLLMENT NIGHTParents! Mark your calendars for Thursday, January 25th, 6:00 p.m. We will be hosting our annual AP/AICE/DUAL ENROLLMENT NIGHT for students and parents interested in AP/AICE/Dual Enrollment classes for next year. AP and AICE applications will be available on this night as well as a copy of student transcripts. If you or child are interested in AP/AICE/Dual Enrollment classes for the 2018-2019 school year, it is imperative for both student and parent to attend this event.

Blood DriveDo you want to be someone who has saved a life? Do you want to earn some community service for saving a life? Then you will want to donate blood. Three times this year the Park Vista Medical Academy is converted into a Blood Center. On November 8th, February 6th and April 3rd, One Blood’s Blood mobile and staff will be at Park Vista from 7:30am-2:30pm for those student who want to give of themselves. The hurricanes have left our community, state and nation with a blood shortage. Widespread destruction, flooding, the lack of electricity and the displacement of millions of people on the island is making blood collections in Puerto Rico extremely difficult. As a result, the hospitals in Puerto Rico are in need of help from the mainland to help ensure a ready blood supply for their patients. We need all students 16 years and older to donate one extra time this year. If you have never donated before we welcome you!!! If you have donated before, bring a friend this time.
Be on the lookout for permission slips from the medical academy. Students, join Remind at 81010 @pvblo. Make sure you bring a photo ID on the day of the blood drive, eat a good breakfast, and start eating healthy right now.
