Nanaji Deshmukh: Chandikadas AmritaraoDeshmukh(Nanaji Deshmukh) was born on 11 in octobar,1916 at
Kadoli, a small town in the prabhani district of Maharashtha, in
the house of Shri Amritrao Deshmukh and Shrimati Rajabai
Amritrao Deshmukh.Nanajis career was full of strife and
struggle. He lost his parents at an early age and was brought up
by his maternal uncle. He worked as a vendor and sell vegetables
to raise money to fund his education. He lived in temples and
received a higher education at the prestigious Birla Institute of
Technology and Science in Pilani. He was among those enthused
youths who joined the RSS devoting their whole life in service to the nation. He was sent to Uttar
Pradesh as a prachark. Later, Nanaji went to Gorakhpur as a pracharak where he took great pains to
introduce Sangh ideology in the eastern UP. In 1947 when RSS decide to launch two
journalsRashtradharma, Panchjany and a newspaper called Swadeshthe challenging task of managing
director was given to Nanaji.
When Shyama Prashard Mukharji started Bhartiya Jana Sangh, Nanaji was asked by
Shri Guruji to take charge of UP as general secretary. It was Nanaji management that successfully
bring political leader of different background and Ideolog together to give first non-congress
government to UP. He also Actively participate in Bhoodan movement of Vinoba bhave. At time of
Emergence an Anti-Indira agitation, led by Jai Prakash Narayan, was gathering momentum.
In the latter half of the year a massive procession, led by Narayan was taken out in Patna. As
the procession wended its way through the roads of the state capital, the police made a lathi charge and
the Sarvodaya leader was the target. The final assault came when Narayans supporters were escorting
him to safety. One of the supporters sprang to his leaders protection, covered him and took all the lathiblows on himself. That man was Nanaji. One of his arms was fractured in this daring effort. When
Narayan gave the call for "Total Revolution".and the Janata Partywas formed,Nanajiwas one of
its main architects. Janata Party stormed into power by sweeping off the Congress .,Nanajihad won the
election from Balrampur Lokh Sabha constituency of Uttar Pradesh. Nanajiwas offered the post of
cabinet minister but he refused. Nanaji retired from his well-established political career and started
Deendayal Research Institute to validate the philosophy of Integral Humanism. He first started his
constructive work at most backward area Gonda(UP) and Beed(Maharashtra). He did a lot of rural
development work there. Nanaji visited chitakoot in 1969 and after watching the pathetic situation of
people in Karma Boomi of Ram, He decided to make Chitrakoot centre of his social work. Nanaji
Developed a Model of development based on the philosophy of integral humanism.
The Rashtriye Rishi Nanaji Deshmukh died on 27 feb 2010. He donated
his body to Dhadhichi Dehdan Sansthan New Delhi and his body was sent to AIMS for medical

Deendayal Research Institute
Philosophy and IdeologyThe whole work of Deendayal Research Institute is based on the sole philosophy ofIntegral Humanism and Hindu Philosophy. The Nanaji worked to Validate basic
Philosophy of Human Life. There are many school of thought but they all are based onwestern philosophy and materialistic. They are unable to explain the connection of man
to man and to whole universe. But the Hindu philosophy explains all such question. The
Integral Humanism is a name given to various feature of Sanatan way of living life
(bhartiya sankarti). The Nanaji all development worked is based on this philosophy. Nanaji
believed that the Humanism based on materialism and exploitation of nature cant besustainable. All development polices in India are follow top to bottom approach. Nanaji
believed that this is basic fault in development. Nanaji believed in thought of Gandhiji
that development should be start from bottom to top manner. Many so called social
workers and activist follow the path opposing and blaming government and believed indharna-pradharshan to achieve development instead of doing any constructive work.
Nanaji said that no one can help people if they are not willing to help themselves. He
said development has to be started from village itself with help of participation ofvillagers. Nanaji motivated people to work in grass root level.
Nanaji believed in holistic and sustainable approach of development.
Sustainability can be seen in every project of chitrakoot. Instead of blaming governmentfor development Nanaji help govt. to implement policies efficiently.
Deendayal Research Institute is working for overall development of villages andmaking them self-reliant. DRI is working in almost all area of human life that covers
health, education, agriculture, employment generation, social consciousness etc. Thebasic concept of project is Total transformation through total development with people
initiative and participation.
Chitrakoot project is successful model of development in front of uswith sustainability and minimum and necessary utilization of resource. It is ideal andreplicable model.

Working MethodologyNanaji made Chitrakoot region center of his rural development work. It is located at the
boarder of MP and UP and was at top on the list of backward areas. The People of
Karma Boomi of Ram were suffering from poverty, lack of education and medical
facilities. The conflicts and dispute among people were very high, Villagers had to pay very
high ratio of their income in litigation. After seeing the pathetic condition of people Nanaji
started his work in this region with participation of rural people.
On 26 January 2005, the campaign of self-reliance was launched with
an aim of making more than 500 villages self-reliant. The project was completed in 2010
after achieving aim of making this region self-reliant and serve self-sustainable and
replicable model for our nation.
The main reason behind the success of this project was working
strategy of DRI. Nanaji believed in bottom-to-top approach of development. The
requirement and resources available of every village are not same so the solution andapproach of development has to be different.Samaj Shilphi Dampathi: The DRI project success and effective rural development is onlypossible by the concept Samaj Shilphi Dampathi. SSD is a just married graduate couple
who are fully dedicated for rural development and willing to stay among villagers. An SSD
live among villagers and make personal attachment with people. In every cluster of 5
village one such couple live. They act as a chain which connects DRI people with villagers.
All development work was implemented through SSDs. The concept of SSD is also
proved very successful in women empowerment in such backward areas otherwise it
would have been very difficult.
First of all a survey of available resources like fertile land availability
and its distribution among people, irrigation facilities, type of work villagers do, animal
resources, education and health condition etc. were done by DRI with help of SSD
ensuring local people participation. After this detail analysis was done and required work
was done by different center like KVK design water management, watershed program and
other agriculture empowerment program, while Udyamitha Vidyapith Work for
employment generation using available resources.
DRI work for holistic development so its work for almost all aspect of life including
health, education, women empowerment etc.
Agriculture and KVKs:To empowerment Agriculture in Chitrakoot region 2 KVKs are working under DRI since
1993. The funding and technological support is provided by government (Indian council
of Agriculture Research-ICAR) but the management is completely governed by Deendayal
Research Institute. Improvement in agriculture is important for self-reliance campaign
because mostly part of economy dependent on agriculture. But condition of agriculture

was not good. Most part of land is under rain fed agriculture. So KVKs started their work
with watershed management program.
DRIs this program has large success and playing a major role in
economic development of farmer. Once where only one crop per year was possible now
farmer growing multiple crop due to availability of water for irrigation.
KVKs provide vocational training to farmer and inspired them
to use modern method of agriculture. They also provide them good quality seed and
technical support.Transformation of uneconomic land hold 1.5/2.5 acre agriculture model):mostly part of Indian agriculture is under uneconomic land holding, the farmer with land
less than 1.5 acre doesnt contribute in national GDP. KVKs under DRI management
developed a program to change this uneconomic land holding to economic land through
multiple cropping and vegetable productions. This model has large success in Chitrakoot
region and this is act as replicable model for farmers of other areas also.
KVKs design their program and implement them with help of SSD.They also provide training of horticulture, animal husbandry, poultry farming, fishing etc.
which act as extra source of income to farmer. ICAR awarded both KVKs with best KVKs
award for their extraordinary work to improvement in agriculture.
Employment and Entrepreneurship Development Program:Udyamitha VIdyapith:
The small and marginal farmer cant generate enough income from agriculture itself.
Nanaji believe to generate enough income non-farming sector income are necessary for
villagers. Udyamita vidyapith is important wing of chitrakoot projcect of Deendayal
research institute, established in the year 1995. So With help of SSD their first know
about the condition of village and design need base training program for villagers to
generate income utilizing available resources. Udyamita vidyapith(UV) has setup a
network of production units in the rural areas through the financial assistance provided
under PMRY, SGRY,SHG etc.
Objective of Udyamita Vidyapith
It has an aim of achieving self-reliance through rural Industrialization.
The institute is trying to develop a model of self-employment generation with aim of
poverty alleviation through creating a network of small-scale industrialization.
Guiding the villagers in getting proper value for their produce in the market through
value addition to their product.
Udyamita vidyapith train villagers through the following unit:
