LOS CABOS THE PLACE WHERE THE LAND ENDS...

AND LIVING BEGINS

BY RICK STEDMAN

T he sands lining Los Cabos’ coastline defy stereotype. While you’ll certainly find isolated hideaways, these shores have something for every taste. When

visiting Los Cabos, exploring the many beaches throughout the region is definitely a highlight. Whether you’re swimming, surfing, paddleboarding, kayaking or simply walking the beach, there is plenty to explore.

BLUE FLAG STATUSThanks to the worldwide Blue Flag designation, it is now easier to find a great place to swim, snorkel or just splash around. The Blue Flag beach designation is widely considered a gold standard for beaches. Awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), Blue Flag eco-certification is internationally

recognized. The FEE has awarded the voluntary eco-label to thousands of the finest beaches and marinas across the globe.

Targeting sustainable development, the prestigious honor demands that strict standards are met in the areas of water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management, and safety.

Along Mexico’s Baja California Sur coastline, the effort to go green has paid off in these prized blue designations. This year, there are 19 Blue Flag certified beaches in Los Cabos, including Acapulquito, Chileno Bay, Corsario, Hacienda, Las Viudas, Punta Palmilla, Santa María Bay, La Ribera and the ever popular Médano Beach.

GOLDEN SANDSMédano rules as the local hot spot for a day of swimming, people watching and aquatic

fun via Jet Skis, banana boats, flyboards, kayaks, parasailing and stand-up paddleboards.

Many high-end resorts line Médano Beach and offer a host of services and amenities, including palapa-shaded cantinas and excellent al fresco dining options.

From the beach you can hop aboard a water taxi or glass bottom boat — or charter a boat in nearby Marina Cabo San Lucas — and head toward Land’s End. Though not Blue Flag-designated, Lover’s Beach offers great snorkeling and diving right in the Sea of Cortés, under the shadow of El Arco where conditions are good and the scenery is incomparable.

As you stroll the lovely side of the beach, take a short detour through a gap in the rocks to arrive at the Pacific-facing Divorce Beach — a look-but-don’t-swim destination. This side of Land’s End is the place to go see incredible sunsets, but the serene view is tempered by powerful surf and a strong undertow.

If you’re looking for a little more tranquility, you can head to Punta Palmilla, Chileno Bay, Santa María Bay or Las Viudas — also known as Widow’s Beach.

Set on a long wide bay in San José del Cabo, Punta Palmilla is a white sand sanctuary that invites couples and families to swim, snorkel and snooze under palapas, or spot migrating whales from the shoreline. In the right season, visitors can easily see whales and their calves from its shores.

Chileno Bay sits on the Tourist Corridor just about at the halfway point between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. This beach is graced with a reef rich in marine life and translucent waters. The family-friendly strand caters to those who enjoy swimming, diving, snorkeling and kayaking. Turtles, moray eels, sea urchins, sponges and starfish, among many other animals, are easy to spot just about anywhere. Guided snorkeling excursions typically pair Chileno Bay with nearby Santa María Bay, a marine sanctuary tucked between two bluffs.

Part of a protected sanctuary, horseshoe-shaped Santa María is surrounded by cactus-covered rocky cliffs and features pink-tinged sand that’s textured like grains of rice. It is easy to find yourself surrounded by schools of tropical fish and coral reefs of all shapes and colors there, especially in the mornings, when the waters are especially calm.

NOT JUST LOUNGINGSurfers gravitate to a number of beaches in Los Cabos, including Monuments Beach and Acapulquito. With a left point break that skews toward tricky, Monuments is best reserved for seasoned surfers. Acapulquito is popular with both beginners and long boarders.
