Without Breaking the Bank!

From Picnics to Fine Dining

By Sandra Berry

One of the biggest reasons for visiting Los Cabos isthe food. No, it’s not all tacos and beer. That’s not to saythere aren’t some to-die-for taco stands here. There aremore four-star restaurants in Los Cabos than any otherresort destination of its size in México. Dining out canbe pricey, but even budget-minded travelers need notskimp. Finding a bountiful meal is very doable on abudget, and you can visit and enjoy Los Cabos withoutspending a fortune. While you probably won’t be able toorder wine with every dinner, you can still sample someof Los Cabos’ renowned food without breaking the bank.

Plan ahead and travel off-season and/or during the weekwhenever possible. Rent an apartment or find an accom-modation with a small kitchen. That will allow you toprepare your own meals at a fraction of the price of whatyou’d pay at a restaurant and you can discover new-to-you ingredients at the local market. We are currently inthe best months when it comes to savings. Off-season inLos Cabos generally runs from mid-June to October.Breakfast is included in bed-and-breakfast lodgings, aswell as at some hotels. There’s a budget-saver right there.Otherwise, coffee shops have pastries and great coffee.Cabo San Lucas now has several coffee shops; so treatyourself to a mocha and a blueberry muffin. Considerrounding out your meals with small-change items likethose to be had at Cabo’s many bakeries, pastry shops, and taco stands, and you can set most of your moneyaside for a single restaurant meal daily. You can poten-tially save hundreds of dollars without feeling like you’vebeen cheated of any must-have resort dining experiences.

Lunch is the meal to splurge on. Head to a popularrestaurant, where you can dine on specialty dishes butpay a fraction of the dinner prices. La Bodega SteakHouse in San José del Cabo offers a very reasonablethree-course lunch menu from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. There arealso several noteworthy taco stands, including the vener-able Gardenia’s. You haven’t lived until you’ve been toGardenia’s. Nearly every tourist at one time or anotherhits Gardenia’s while in Cabo, and visitors return yearafter year for its affordable and fundamental menu oftacos made with fish, shrimp, chicken, beef, and evennopales (cactus—try it, you’ll like it!).

But the best deal for lunch might just be a picnic. Pickup your repast at Lenny’s Deli and eat alfresco on thebeach. It’s a marvelous way to experience one of life’sgreatest pleasures. Imagine savoring a hunk of bread, apiece of cheese, and a bottle of wine with your lovedone, enjoying the open air, sitting on a sandy beach orthe terrace of your condo. You’re relaxed, happy, andrelishing the finer things in life. Picnics are no longerlimited to paper plates and finger foods. There are sev-eral first-rate catering services—such as Denni’sCatering or Lazy Gourmet—that can accommodate you, again without breaking the bank. Now you can have afour-star dining experience anywhere you wish: a boat,a secluded beach, or even your patio overlooking themarina. Not only do many picnic baskets contain fullsets of plates, glasses, utensils, cloth napkins and table-cloths, and waterproof insulated coolers, you’ll also findsuch extras as salt and pepper shakers, detachable wine

Opposite page: The Specialty Pizza is one of the many dishes Baja Cantina Dockside prepares well. In this sizzling hot pie, a delicious combination of ingredientsgives a full flavor to the sauce itself, while pepperoni, ham, green and red bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, and olives add depth and a splash of color on top.

For dinner, check out the menu at Amarone, one of thebest Italian restaurants in Los Cabos. Located in PuertoParaiso Mall, the restaurant boasts an amazing view fromthe outdoor eating area, where you can enjoy lunch or din-ner and look out on the marina. Pastas are affordable, as arethe appetizers, salads, and soups, and you can still take inthe view or the jazz entertainment in the evening withoutexceeding your budget. You’ve probably heard of TheOriginal Park Restaurant & Bar. It is famous for its hugelobster dishes, but you can go there and order from theappetizer menu and still enjoy great food. Lorenzillo’s hasan oyster bar located right on the marina where you candine for lunch or dinner by ordering a beautiful spinachsalad or oysters on the half shell and bask in the moment ofwhere you are–looking out at beautiful yachts and diningalfresco. You can select some small plates to feast on atSolomon’s Landing, or the bar at Baja Cantina Dockside isprobably the best deal in town with happy hour drink pricesas well as small servings of fried calamari, tostadas, mini piz-zas, and a bowl of chili or clam chowder. Go for the nachosat Pancho’s Restaurant, or any number of other Los Cabos’eateries and enjoy the ambience, the camaraderie of friendsand loved ones, and not feel the pinch in the wallet.

La Golondrina, with its twinkling lighted trees, is one of themost romantic dining spots in town. And because of its lightmenu options, you and your loved one don’t have to missthis fabulous opportunity. The best guacamole in town ismade right in front of you at La Casa Country. That and abowl of tortilla soup can be quite filling while you listen tocountry-style music. Afterward, try a bit of line dancing.

If you have minimized your eating costs during the day, youcan opt to go to one of the more upscale eating spots for anevening of dining at none other than Sunset Da Mona Lisa, where you’ll be dazzled by the most beautiful sunset in LosCabos (the restaurant overlooks the famous arch landmark).

Why spoil your long-awaited getaway vacation by spendingit worrying about the finances? You’ve come to Los Cabos toenjoy yourself. With a little planning and consideration toyour dining budget, you can still enjoy your vacation with-out breaking the bank. You’ll remember your stay in LosCabos with fond memories without feeling guilty. It’s a greatplace to vacation even if you’re watching the pennies. Witha little common sense about budgeting, you’ll feel betterabout returning soon and often. ■
