Abbreviations used in this text may not be familiar to all our readers. The following is a list of some that are used in our listings as well as a brief explanation of some important terminology. Basically, there are three grading authorities that we have cited: AFA (Action Figure Authority,) DCA (Die Cast Authority,) and CGC (Certified Guaranty Company.)

The above acronyms are typically followed by a grade. Condition designations sometimes used in the grades are: “U,” which means factory-sealed package opened for the first time, assigned a number (which follows) denoting quality, and resealed, or ”Y” meaning yellowing. follow a simple scale of 2.0 (the lowest grade,) to 10.0, the highest. This number is then followed by a letter grade such as: GM (= Gem Mint,) M (= Mint,) NM (= Near Mint,), VF (=Very Fine, F (= Fine,) G (= Good.) Rating 1.0 or FR is Fair and PR or .5 is Poor. Examples of listings you might see are “Graded 80 NM by AFA,” or “Graded U85 VF by AFA.”

GRADING

Toys serve many functions in our civilization. They can delight, inform, teach, entertain and even surprise. They can also be nostalgic, sentimental, momentous and insightful. Toys come in various forms. They can be in the form of a physical object or digital content or even an abstract exercise. Additionally, toys can be instructive, interactive, engaging or decorative. Regardless of form or function, toys have been around since prehistoric times. They have been discovered in caves, pyramids, tombs and other archaeological excavation sites. They have been written about in some of our oldest literature. They have been around as long as humans have been roaming the Earth. That’s because they have the dual role of providing entertainment while fulfilling an educational role. They aid in child development, teaching kids physical and mental skills which are necessary later in life.

But toys are not just for children. No matter the age or gender or race, toys affect everyone in a cognitive way that may be unique and perhaps necessary for our species. I think the most important thing that the best toys do is that they bring people together. They make us engage, learn and share with each other. From dolls and action figures to board games and Legos, the most memorable toys capture our imaginations while allowing us to celebrate with other people. Over time, the most memorable toys have also become the most collectible. In a way, collecting toys is like freeze-framing society and cutting a slice of the amber of our anthropology. A toy collection is a time capsule of pride and satisfaction inside a vacuum of nostalgia and emotion wrapped in a veneer of historical context.

This catalog is both an acknowledgement and celebration of toys as a vital part of our lives and our world. The collection within showcases popular culture as depicted in television, film, comics and children’s books. It features a unique variety of toys, comics, artwork and artifacts. Stellar among these offerings is the original 1978 Carbalon hand-painted hardcopy 15” Darth Vader figure with Lightsaber, given by Kenner to Sears to photograph for the 1978 Christmas catalog, the rare Kenner Stretch Serpent, and an especially extensive Star Wars collection. Other offerings include original design artwork for children’s book covers and game pieces, such as the Brady Bunch paper doll book design prototype, Pink Panther jigsaw puzzles, Bugs Bunny sticker books, and many other one-of-a-kind items. Whether you are a collector or an enthusiast, we hope you will find something that will delight, amuse, tickle and maybe surprise you within these pages.

142. VINTAGE 1950S SHOWA NOMURA MECHANIZED ROBBY THE ROBOT FROM FORBIDDEN PLANET

Original rare 1950s battery operated Robby the Robot made by T.N. Showa Nomura in Japan. This robot was inspired by the classic Sci-Fi film, Forbidden Planet (MGM, 1956). However, Showa Nomura decided to not obtain the requisite license to legally produce the robot. Hence, when the product was released it did not carry the name “Robby,” but rather a generic “Mechanized Robot” nomenclature. 263. ORIGINAL 1978 KENNER SEARS CATALOG PROTOTYPE DARTH VADER 15” SCALE FIGURE

This is the original 1978 Carbalon hand-painted hardcopy 15” Darth Vader figure, with Lightsaber, given by Kenner to Sears to photograph for the 1978 Christmas catalog. At the time, the commercial figures were not yet produced. However, Sears needed something to photograph. This very figure was used and subsequently seen in the 1978 Sears Christmas catalog. The actual production figures were based on this prototype, yet only 12” tall. It is believed that there are only a couple of Carbalon examples known to exist. This prototype came directly from an ex-Sears executive, who kept the figure after the catalog photo shoot was completed. He has had the figure carefully stored ever since. Comes with a signed Collectible Investment Brokerage Certificate of Authenticity. The figure exhibits several areas of paint loss, most notably on the helmet and shoulders. Otherwise, in excellent condition. This is the “holy grail” of Star Wars collectibles.

BLACKSPARROW AUCTIONS TERMS & CONDITIONS

BY EITHER REGISTERING TO BID OR PLACING A BID, THE BIDDER ACCEPTS THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS OF SALE AND ENTERS INTO A LEGALLY, BINDING, ENFORCEABLE AGREEMENT WITH BLACKSPARROW AUCTIONS (“BLACKSPARROW”).

Bidder and Blacksparrow agree that any agreements between the Bidder and Blacksparrow, including but not limited to these Conditions of Sale, are entered into in Los Angeles County, California, which is where the agreements are to be performed and the auction to take place, no matter where Bidder is situated and no matter by what means or where Bidder was informed of the auction and regardless of whether catalogs, materials, or other communications were received by Bidder in another location. Both Blacksparrow and the Bidder agree that any disputes under these Conditions of Sale, the subject matter hereof, the entering into, or any aspect of the auction, shall be exclusively governed by California law, and that any and all claims or actions shall be brought and maintained only in Los Angeles County, California in a State or Federal Court to the exclusion of any other venue, locale or jurisdiction. All parties submit to such jurisdiction.

1. Estimate Prices: In addition to descriptive information, each entry in the catalog includes a price range, which reflects opinion as to the price expected at auction. These are based upon various factors including prices recently paid at auction for comparable property, condition, rarity, quality, history and provenance. Estimates are prepared well in advance of the sale and subject to revision. Estimates do not include the buyer’s premium or sales tax.

2. Reserves: The reserve is the minimum price the seller is willing to accept and below which a lot will not be sold.

3. Buyer’s Premium and Sales Tax: The actual purchase price will be the sum of the final bid price plus the buyer’s premium of 18% of the hammer price. Hammer price is the final bid amount called out by the auctioneer when the gavel, proverbial or otherwise, comes down. California sales tax shall automatically be added to the purchase price for CA residents, unless exempted.

4. Advance Inquiries: Bidders are encouraged to send inquiries pertaining to the auction, as a whole and/or individual lot. You may also request condition reports. Blacksparrow strongly urges the bidder to resolve any questions PRIOR TO BIDDING.

5. Bidding: Property is auctioned in consecutive numerical order, as it appears in the catalog. Blacksparrow shall determine all opening bids and bidding increments. The auctioneer will accept bids from those present in the salesroom or absentee bidders participating by telephone, Internet or by written bid left with Blacksparrow in advance of the auction. The auctioneer has the absolute discretionary right to reject any bid in the event of dispute between bidders or if the auctioneer has doubt as to the validity of any bid, to advance the bidding and to determine the successful bidder in the event of a dispute between bidders, to continue the bidding or to reoffer and resell the lot in question. In the event of a dispute after the sale, Blacksparrow’s record of final sale shall be conclusive.

6. Internet Bids: Blacksparrow is pleased to partner with iCollector to provide online bidding in real-time. However, Blacksparrow is not and cannot be responsible or liable for any problems, delays, or any other issues or problems resulting from use of the Internet generally or specifically, including but not limited to transmission, execution or processing of bids. On some occasions beyond the control of Blacksparrow, the iCollector bid software or the Internet itself may not physically keep up with the pace of the auction. In order to help avoid disappointment, Blacksparrow recommends placing a realistic absentee bid as early as possible.

7. Successful Bids: The proverbial fall of the auctioneer’s hammer indicates the final bid. Blacksparrow will record the paddle number of the buyer. Winning bidders shall be notified with an invoice within 48 hours after the conclusion of the auction.

8. Certificate of Authenticity: For each auctioned lot, Blacksparrow will supply a documented certificate with the official Blacksparrow stamp and logo. This certificate will be signed by an authorized Blacksparrow executive.

9. Payment: Payment is expected in full within 7 calendar days of the sale, or within 5 calendar days of the invoice date, whichever is later. Acceptable methods of payment include cash, personal check, cashiers check, money order, credit card (VISA, Mastercard, Discover, AMEX), bank transfer, and PayPal. Other forms of payment may be accepted. Please consult a staff member.

10. Shipping: Buyers are responsible for arranging shipping and for all shipping costs. As a convenience, shipping for small items may be handled by Blacksparrow via FedEx. For oversize items, a third party shipper is recommended. Buyers may use any shipper of their choice. Blacksparrow can recommend local shippers if needed.

11. Buyer’s Remedies: As these are rare collector pieces, all sales are final. In the unfortunate event that there is a problem with the condition of an item when it is delivered, Blacksparrow will collaborate with you to resolve any shipping and/or condition issues. Note that all matters relating to provenance and/or history of a lot need to be resolved prior to the auction.
