DIRECTOR’S REPORT July 2016 Laura McCarty, Parks and Recreation Director [email protected]

Lincolnwood Fest The Friends of the Community Center will once again plan and implement Lincolnwood Fest, a four day festival in Proesel Park. The festival will be held July 21-24. Music, food, a beer/wine tent, a car show, business exposition and a carnival will be featured as part of the weekend’s activities. Event hours are: Thursday, 5-10pn, Friday, 5-11pm, Saturday, Noon-11pm and Sunday, 10am-9pm. The Parks and Recreation Department will have a booth on Saturday and Sunday afternoon for a couple of hours in which we will have the opportunity to promote department programs and events. Booth visitors will also have the opportunity to participate in our new “Plinko” game in which they will have the chance to win fun prizes. Hope to see you at the Fest! IMRA Playground and Aquatic Facility Safety Visits On July 20 and 21 safety inspections will be conducted by our IMRA Risk Manager. The purpose of these inspections is to identify hazards and/or risk recommendations within our playground and aquatic facilities. The playground inspections will utilize recognized practices/standards in order to evaluate our playground safety and maintenance program. GG Rowell Playground Equipment Each year to ensure our playground equipment is maintained and in compliance with national playground safety standards, equipment is replaced and updated. This year the equipment at GG Rowell will be replaced. Staff will begin the formal RFP process this month and the goal is to have the new playground equipment installed by the end of November.

Superintendent of Recreation July 2016 Katie Smith Gamroth [email protected] Social Club The summer is a wonderful time for the Social Club. With the nicer weather we see more of our members out and about. This past June the group enjoyed lunch trips and a theater trip to see “My Fair Lady” at the Cahn Auditorium in Evanston. This July we have added dinner trips into our program offerings. The dinner programs will be set up the same way as our “Lunch Bunch” program. Members will register with the Parks and Recreation Department and meet at the restaurant on the appropriate day to enjoy dinner with the group. If successful, the dinner program will be offered during the longer days of the summer months. Along with the new dinner program, the social club is scheduled for the following activities in July:

Chicago Trolley Tour Dinner at Brick House

Deathtrap at Drury Lane Theater Afternoon Tea at the Community Center

Lunch at Tuk Tuk Thai

Fall Program Guide The Fall brochure will head off to the printer early July for delivery to residents in early August. Staff have added many new programs for Fall 2016, including:

Youth Improv at the Community Center Adult Improv at the Community Center

Youth Dance at the Community Center Nordic Fitness at Centennial Park

Youth Athletic classes at Rutledge Hall R.I.P.P.E.D 50+ at the Community Center

ACA It is hard to believe that it has been three years since the camp first went through the American Camping Association’s accreditation process. The 2016 summer is the summer for recertification. Staff have been updating past standards with current information and gathering documentation for new standards that have been added in the past few years. The camp is scheduled for a site visit during July, in which ACA visitors will review compliance standards as well as inspect all camp sites to confirm that the day camp program is compliant with their standards.
