WOMEN’S BASKETBALL For the first time in over three weeks Cleveland State will play on the road, as the Vikings are set to open Horizon League play at UIC on Wednesday (Jan. 9) at 5:30 p.m. EST. CSU will then return home to con-tinue league play against Detroit at 2:00 p.m. on Satur-day (Jan. 12). Last time out, the Vikings dropped their first contest since November - falling to Butler, 56-54. CSU closed out the non-league portion of its schedule with an 8-5 record, and has won seven of its last eight games – in-cluding a 6-0 mark during the month of December. Shalonda Winton leads the league in assists (4.8), while ranking second in scoring (21.7), rebounding (10.8) and defensive rebounds (7.8) and third in steals (2.5) and blocked shots (1.1). Cori Coleman is the second Viking to average double-digit points entering league play, ranking 14th in the Horizon League with 12.1 points per game.

MEN’S BASKETBALL Cleveland State continues its busy stretch with three games this week, starting with a 6:00 p.m. contest against UIC in the Wolstein Center on Monday (Jan. 7). The Vikings then head to Wright State on Wednesday (Jan. 9) at 7:00 p.m. and host Detroit on Saturday (Jan. 12) at 4:30 p.m. CSU is 8-7 overall and this and 0-1 in the Horizon League after dropping its league opener at Valparaiso, 74-50, on Friday night. Luda Ndaye led the Vikings with a career-high 15 points, setting career-highs in field goals made (7) and attempted (12). He also added six rebounds, just one shy of equaling his career-high. Charlie Lee leads the team with 12.3 points per game, ranking ninth in the Horizon League. He is also third in the league with 4.7 assists per game.

WRESTLING Cleveland State will be back on the mat this Fri-day as the team heads to Fairfax, Va. for the Patriot Classic at George Mason. CSU will wrestle Brown at 4:00 p.m. and George Mason at 7:00 p.m. The Vikings have been off from competition since Jan. 1-2 when the team competed the Southern Scuffle at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Ben Willeford led the way for CSU at the Scuffle, which is one of the nation’s top mid-season wrestling tournaments, picking up three wins at 125 pounds at the two-day event, ending with a 3-2 overall mark. Michael Carlone (133), Nick Flannery (141), Matt Donohoe (157), Corey Carlo (165), Xavier Dye (174), and Corbin Boone (184) also all picked up victories at the highly competitive event.

MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING After spending a little over a week training and competing in the Grand Caymen Islands, the Vikings will be back in action when CSU hosts Oakland on Sat-urday (Jan. 12) at 1:00 p.m. The Vikings will be in the pool back in the states for the first time since Dec. 4 when CSU went 4-0 in the Cleveland College Dual Meet. Senior Mark De Swardt led the way once again for CSU, winning the 1,000 freestyle in dominating fashion by 18 seconds (9:45.22). He then went on to win the 200 IM (1:55.84), and 500 freestyle (4:41.40). Junior Al Shillito and senior Berry Thompson also picked up three wins. Shillito was victorious in the 200 freestyle (1:41.81), and 100 freestyle (46.44), while Thompson won the 50 yard freestyle (20.73) and teamed to win two relays.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING After spending a little over a week training and competing in the Grand Caymen Islands, the Vikings will be back in action when CSU hosts Oakland on Sat-urday (Jan. 12) at 1:00 p.m. Freshman Jodi Turk had one of the best days of her young career bringing home two wins. Both wins came in dominating fashion for the freshman as she won the 500 freestyle (5:09.49) by 12 seconds, and the 1,000 freestyle (10:32.03) by 24 seconds. Senior Alice Sommerville also had great swims for CSU on the day, picking up three wins. She won the 50-yard freestyle (23.66), and the 100 breaststroke (1:05.63) and teamed up with Jamie Puls, Gretchen Hestley, and Christine Kopacko to win the 200 free-style relay (1:36.94).

laSt WeekWilleford posted a 3-2 record at the highly-competitive Southern Scuffle last week at Tennessee-Chattanooga. Competing at one of the most highly com-petitive meets events of the season, Willeford went 3-1 on the first day of competition and was the lone Viking to advance to day two. After starting the day with a 10-2 major decision victory, the junior fell in his second match before rallying back to earn consecutive decision victories (7-1 and 3-2) to move on. He fell, 3-2, on day two, coming up just short of a top eight finish at the event.
