Step 1: Working with the red, yellow, and green prints, cut two 4 ¼” x 40” strips from each.Make 2 identical strip sets by sewing a yellow strip between a red and green strip. Press seam allowances to one side.

Trim off the selvage and cross-cut the strip sets in 6” increments. You need only 8 units. The remainder of the strip sets can be used for cornerstones, on the back of the quilt, or be included in the binding.

Step 2: Sew the patchwork units to the right side of each rectangle. Press seams toward the rectangles. Trim the blocks the same size as the large panel blocks, 10 ¾” x 11 ¾.”

Step 3: Sashing: Cut sashing from the blue tone-on-tone fabric: Cut 6 strips 2 ½” x 40.” From these strips cut 12 strips 10 ¾” long, and cut 12 strips 11 ¾” long.Cut 9 cornerstones, 2 ½” square, from the green print remaining from Step 1 above.

On work surface, lay out the blocks according to the picture of the sample quilt, alternating a large picture block with a patchwork block. Place the sashing strips and cornerstones between the blocks. Make 4 rows of blocks by sewing 2 ½” x 11 ¾” blue sashing strips between the blocks. Press seams toward sashing.

Make 3 rows of sashing by sewing green print cornerstones between 2 ½” x 10 ¾” blue sashing strips. Press seams toward the cornerstones. Finally, sew the sashing rows between the rows of blocks. Press seams toward sashing.

Step 4: Borders: Cut 5 border strips, 3 ½” x 40” from the blue tone-on-tone fabric.For side borders, sew 3 strips together end to end, pressing seams open.Measure the quilt through the center from top to bottom. Cut 2 strips this length; pin and sew to the sides of the quilt. Press seams toward border strips.For the top and bottom borders, sew together 2 border strips plus the remainder of the strip used for the side borders above. Press seams open.Now measure the quilt through the center from side to side. Cut 2 strips this length; pin and sew to the top and bottom of the quilt. Press seams toward border strips.

Step 5: QuiltingLayer backing, batting and quilt top. Baste with quilting pins or thread. Quilt an all-over spiral design with blue thread.
