Station 1: Comparison of Korea, Vietnam, and Iraq

1. Critics have claimed that the United States is acting as “World Police” or “Big Brother” in the Middle East right now. Do you agree or disagree? On what basis?

2. In order to enter a war, whether limited or total, a country has to consider its interests at stake. What interests were the United States protecting in Korea? Vietnam? Now in Iraq?

3. During the Korean War and the Vietnam War, protests emerged in almost all major cities among young college students, musicians, and celebrities. Is the same thing happening right now? Why or why not?

4. How have world politics changed since the times of Korea and Vietnam? How are they the same?

5. What can we learn from Korea and Vietnam that we can apply to the current situation in Iraq?

Station 4: LyricsFortunate Son

Credence Clearwater Revival (CCR)

Some folks are born made to wave the flag,Ooh, they're red, white and blue.

And when the band plays "Hail to the chief",Ooh, they point the cannon at you, Lord,

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no senator's son, son.It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, no,

Yeah! Some folks are born silver spoon in hand,

Lord, don't they help themselves, oh.But when the taxman comes to the door,

Lord, the house looks like a rummage sale, yes,It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no millionaire's son, no.

It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, no.Some folks inherit star spangled eyes,Ooh, they send you down to war, Lord,

And when you ask them, "How much should we give?"Ooh, they only answer More! more! more! yoh,

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no military son, son.It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, one.

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate one, no no no,It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate son, no no no,

Turn! Turn! Turn!The Byrds

 To everything (turn, turn, turn)

There is a season (turn, turn, turn)And a time for every purpose, under heaven

A time to be born, a time to dieA time to plant, a time to reapA time to kill, a time to heal

A time to laugh, a time to weep

To everything (turn, turn, turn)There is a season (turn, turn, turn)

And a time for every purpose, under heaven

A time to build up,a time to break downA time to dance, a time to mourn

A time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together

To everything (turn, turn, turn)There is a season (turn, turn, turn)

And a time for every purpose, under heaven

A time of love, a time of hateA time of war, a time of peace

A time you may embrace, a time to refrain from embracing

To everything (turn, turn, turn)There is a season (turn, turn, turn)

And a time for every purpose, under heaven

A time to gain, a time to loseA time to rend, a time to sewA time to love, a time to hate

A time for peace, I swear its not too late

WAR(Barret Strong, Norman Whitfield/Edwin Star)

WarWhat is it good forAbsolutely nothing

WarWhat is it good forAbsolutely nothing

War is something that I despiseFor it means destruction of innocent lives

For it means tears in thousands of mothers' eyesWhen their sons go out to fight to give their lives

WarIt's nothing but a heartbreaker

WarFriend only to the undertaker

War is the enemy of all mankindThe thought of war blows my mind

Handed down from generation to generationInduction destruction

Who wants to die

War has shattered many young men's dreamsMade them disabled bitter and meanLife is too precious to be fighting wars

each dayWar can't give life it can only take it away

WarIt's nothing but a heartbreaker

WarFriend only to the undertakerPeace love and understanding

There must be some place for these things todayThey say we must fight to keep our freedom

But Lord there's gotta be a better wayThat's better than

War

You know we've got to find a wayTo bring some lovin' here today

Picket lines and picket signsDon't punish me with brutality

Talk to me, so you can seeOh, what's going on

What's going onYa, what's going onAh, what's going on

In the mean timeRight on, baby

Father, father, everybody thinks we're wrongOh, but who are they to judge usSimply because our hair is long

Oh, you know we've got to find a wayTo bring some understanding here today

OhPicket lines and picket signs

Don't punish me with brutalityTalk to me

ImagineJohn Lennon

Imagine there's no Heaven It's easy if you try No hell below us

Above us only sky Imagine all the people

Living for today

Imagine there's no countries It isn't hard to do

Nothing to kill or die for And no religion too

Imagine all the people Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one

I hope someday you'll join us And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions I wonder if you can

No need for greed or hunger A brotherhood of man Imagine all the people Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one

I hope someday you'll join us And the world will live as one

Ballad Of The Green BeretsAs Written & Performed by SSgt Barry Sadler

Fighting soldiers from the skyFearless men who jump and dieMen who mean just what they sayThe brave men of the Green Beret

Silver wings upon their chestThese are men, America's bestOne hundred men we'll test todayBut only three win the Green Beret

Trained to live, off nature's landTrained in combat, hand to handMen who fight by night and dayCourage deep, from the Green Beret

Silver wings upon their chestThese are men, America's bestOne hundred men we'll test todayBut only three win the Green Beret

Back at home a young wife waitsHer Green Beret has met his fateHe has died for those oppressedLeaving her this last request

Put silver wings on my son's chestMake him one of America's bestHe'll be a man they'll test one dayHave him win the Green Beret

Artist/Band: Haggard MerleLyrics for Song: Okie from Muskogee

We don't smoke marijuana in Muskogee; We don't take our trips on LSD

We don't burn our draft cards down on Main Street; We like livin' right, and bein' free.

I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee,A place where even squares can have a ball

We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,And white lightnin's still the biggest thrill of all

We don't make a party out of lovin';We like holdin' hands and pitchin' woo;

We don't let our hair grow long and shaggy,Like the hippies out in San Francisco do.

And I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee,A place where even squares can have a ball.

We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,And white lightnin's still the biggest thrill of all.

Leather boots are still in style for manly footwear;Beads and Roman sandals won't be seen.

Football's still the roughest thing on campus,And the kids here still respect the college dean.

We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,In Muskogee, Oklahoma, USA.

All Along The Watchtower: Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix

"There must be some way out of here," said the joker to the thief,"There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief.

Businessmen, they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth,None of them along the line know what any of it is worth."

"No reason to get excited," the thief, he kindly spoke,"There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke. But you and I, we've been through that, and this is not our fate,

So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late."

All along the watchtower, princes kept the viewWhile all the women came and went, barefoot servants, too.

Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl,Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl.

Artist: Buffalo Springfield LyricsSong: For What It's Worth Lyrics

There's something happening hereWhat it is ain't exactly clear

There's a man with a gun over thereTelling me I got to beware

I think it's time we stop, children, what's that soundEverybody look what's going downThere's battle lines being drawn

Nobody's right if everybody's wrongYoung people speaking their minds

Getting so much resistance from behindI think it's time we stop, hey, what's that sound

Everybody look what's going downWhat a field-day for the heat

A thousand people in the streetSinging songs and carrying signsMostly say, hooray for our side

It's time we stop, hey, what's that soundEverybody look what's going down

Paranoia strikes deepInto your life it will creep

It starts when you're always afraidYou step out of line, the man come and take you away

We better stop, hey, what's that soundEverybody look what's going down

Stop, hey, what's that soundEverybody look what's going down

Stop, now, what's that soundEverybody look what's going downStop, children, what's that sound

Everybody look what's going down

Artist: Joan Baez LyricsSong: Blowin' in the Wind Lyrics

How many roads must a man walk downBefore they call him a man

How many seas must a white dove sailBefore she sleeps in the sand

How many times must the cannonballs flyBefore they are forever banned

The answer, my friend, is blowing in the windThe answer is blowing in the wind

How many years must a mountain existBefore it is washed to the sea

How many years can some people existBefore they're allowed to be free

How many times can a man turn his headAnd pretend that he just doesn't see

The answer, my friend, is blowing in the windThe answer is blowing in the wind

How many times must a man look upBefore he can see the sky

How many years must one man haveBefore he can hear people cry

How many deaths will it take till he knowsThat too many people have died

The answer, my friend, is blowing in the windThe answer is blowing in the wind

Lyrics for Song: Fightin' Side of MeI hear people talkin' bad,

About the way we have to live here in this country,Harpin' on the wars we fight,

An' gripin' 'bout the way things oughta be.An' I don't mind 'em switchin' sides,

An' standin' up for things they believe in.When they're runnin' down my country, man,

They're walkin' on the fightin' side of me. Yeah, walkin' on the fightin' side of me.

Runnin' down the way of life,Our fightin' men have fought and died to keep.

If you don't love it, leave it:Let this song I'm singin' be a warnin'.

If you're runnin' down my country, man,You're walkin' on the fightin' side of me.

I read about some squirrely guy,Who claims, he just don't believe in fightin'.

An' I wonder just how long,The rest of us can count on bein' free.

They love our milk an' honey,But they preach about some other way of livin'.When they're runnin' down my country, hoss,

They're walkin' on the fightin' side of me.

Yeah, walkin' on the fightin' side of me.Runnin' down the way of life,

Our fightin' men have fought and died to keep.If you don't love it, leave it:

Let this song I'm singin' be a warnin'.If you're runnin' down my country, man,You're walkin' on the fightin' side of me.
