Today’s Worship

Jesus was dead. They’d seen him die. They knew his lifeless body had been laid in a grave. So the

disciples were understandably doubtful when the women told them that he was alive; skeptical that

what they said could possibly be true. But then Jesus appeared to them! And as they became

eyewitnesses of Jesus’ power and glory, and his victorious resurrection, everything changed! But if

we’re skeptical today of the resurrection, Jesus isn’t showing up in our room. How can we really

know that Jesus’ resurrection is the truth? In our service this morning, we’ll see how Christ’s

resurrection makes us victorious over skepticism, so we can be always prepared to give an answer

for the hope that we have in him!

The Season of Easter

The Easter season is 50 days long and consists of 8 Sundays: from Easter to Pentecost. The Sundays

of Easter remind us that Easter is more than just one day on the calendar. Instead, it is a continued

celebration of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead and his victory over Satan.

M: He is risen!

C: He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

M: The grace of our Lord (+) Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy

Spirit be with you.

C: And also with you.

CONFESSION OF SINS

M: God invites us to come into his presence and worship him with humble and penitent hearts.

Therefore, let us acknowledge our sinfulness and ask him to forgive us.

C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed you

in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For

this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and

trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

PRAYER AND PRAISE

LORD, HAVE MERCY Kyrie

M: For all that we need in life and for the wisdom to use all your gifts with gratitude and joy, hear

our prayer, O Lord.

M: For the steadfast assurance that nothing can separate us from your love and for the courage to

stand firm against the assaults of Satan and every evil, hear our prayer, O Christ.

M: For the well-being of your holy Church in all the world and for all those who are offering their

worship and praise, hear our prayer, O Lord.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M: Let us pray.

O risen Lord, you came to your disciples and took away their fears with your word of peace. Come

to us also by your Word and sacrament, and banish our fears with the comforting assurance of your

abiding presence; for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and

forever.

THE WORD

FIRST LESSON: Acts 10:34a, 36, 39-43

Eyewitnesses of the risen Christ

34 Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism. 36 You

know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through

Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. 39 “We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews

and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a cross, 40 but God raised him from the

dead on the third day and caused him to be seen. 41 He was not seen by all the people, but by

witnesses whom God had already chosen—by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the

dead. 42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God

appointed as judge of the living and the dead. 43 All the prophets testify about him that

everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

SECOND LESSON: 1 Peter 1:3-9

A living hope

3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new

birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an

inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, 5 who

through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be

revealed in the last time. 6 In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have

had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that the proven genuineness of your

faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise,

glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and

even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and

glorious joy, 9 for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

M: The Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

VERSE OF THE DAY

M: Alleluia. Alleluia. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia. Blessed are those who have not

seen and yet have believed. Alleluia. (John 20:29b)

GOSPEL: John 20:19-31

Jesus appears to his disciples

19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors

locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with

you!” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when

they saw the Lord.

21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with

that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins

are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

24 Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus

came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails

were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors

were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he said to

Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop

doubting and believe.”

28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have

not seen and yet have believed.”

30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this

book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that

by believing you may have life in his name.

Answering the Easter Skeptic

CONFESSION OF FAITH

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is,

seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being

with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came

down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully

human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was

buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into

Heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge

the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and

the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has

spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We

acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the

dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on

earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we

forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

THANK THE LORD

M: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another. Serve the Lord with gladness.

The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.

The Lord look on you with his favor and (+) give you peace.

Parents’ Preview for April 26th

The Parents’ Preview highlights an aspect of next week’s service: a liturgical song, a prayer, a Psalm refrain, or a hymn stanza. Our hope and prayer is that parents will teach this portion of the service to their children at home during the week so that

children can participate more fully in the worship service next week!
