I have received a number of enquiries about the magazine - has it got lost - I haven‟t received it yet - is it running late? Well is a little bit of all of that

and a little bit more. The preparation of the magazine is time consuming and we only have an editorial staff of one. That one, being me, thoroughly enjoys preparing the magazine for you all, but from time to time there is a need to com-bine a couple of months into one magazine.

I have decided to do that for February and March this year, in previous years it has been April and May, usually after the National Bug-In when I am still travelling around and getting home. This year I am still going to the Bug-In but only for a two week holiday and I hope to be back and have the April magazine out around mid-month. See you then...

Easter will be upon us shortly, and as this is the last maga-zine before then, I would like to wish all our members a Happy Easter. As it is school holidays at this time of the

year also I wish everybody a safe journey to and from where ever you travel on your holidays. Looking forward to those hot X buns and of course the Easter eggs...

Those members that were there last year will know that there is a BBQ in close proximity to our location. For the early arrivals, it has been suggested that we have a BBQ breakfast.

For those members that have requested tickets and in-tend taking part in the annual Classic Car Show at White-man Park, here are a few tips and requirements.

Gates open at 6:00am but please don't arrive before 7:30. All entrants are required to be through the gates by 9:00am.

No car may be removed before 4:00pm. This is an in-surance requirement by Whiteman Park.

All members that have advised the club committee of their intention of taking part will be provided with their tickets and a map showing where to go.

Read all conditions printed on the ticket. If anything printed there contradicts this article, accept what is on the ticket.

Fill in your tickets as soon as you get them. They must be completed before you get to the gate.

Fairbridge

Festival ‘10 Fairbridge Festival 2010, Western Australia‟s most popular family camping festival, will take place from 9-11 April at historic Fairbridge Village, Pinjarra. It is a friendly celebra-tion of folk, roots, blues, acoustic, celtic, a capella and world music in a traffic-free, self-contained bushland site. This year kids under 13 years old are free - yes FREE.

The Children‟s Festival is looking pretty exciting. All-time favourites The Chipolatas are back and so is Adam Hall & The Velvet Playboys. Dream State Circus has two exciting shows, Fliptastic and Kinetic Soup as well as circus work-shops.

More fun comes from Spiderfish Stew, Mucky Duck Bush Band and The Peppercorns. There are numerous work-shops for all ages including hands on dance, art, music, cooking, Sustainable Kid‟s Craft, puppet and lantern mak-ing.

The Volkswagen Drivers Club of Queensland invites every-body to make the trek to Queensland for the 41st Annual Bug-ln 2010.... for what will be a great long weekend !

The location they've chosen for Bug-ln 2010 is the beauti-ful town of Stanthorpe, in the Granite Belt region of South-ern Queensland. The Granite Belt region is known for its boutique wineries, fruit growing, arts and crafts and multi-ple other tourist attractions... the programme they have planned adds some Volkswagen-based fun to an already great mix.

Toodyay’s Moondyne

Festival Sunday 2nd May

The Committee of the Moondyne Fes-tival has invited the VW Club of WA to participate in the Moondyne Festival.

The invite includes a static display of cars in Stirling Terrace, Toodyay from 9.00 am and to take part in their Grand Parade at approx 3.30pm. Stir-ling Terrace will be closed from 7.30am to 4.30pm.

The Moondyne Festival is an annual festival held in Tood-yay on the first Sunday in May. It is a highly regarded festival, and usually attracts between 4,500 to 5,000 visi-tors, and is held to celebrate

the life of Moondyne Joe, Western Austra-lia‟s only bush-ranger, whose main claim to fame was his ability to escape prison, despite a special rein-forced cell hav-ing been con-structed to keep him in.

Attractions include family fun fair, street theatre, re-enacting the antics of Moondyne Joe and his subsequent capture and trial, moustache competi-tion, cleavage competition, many var-ied stalls, art exhibition, boot scooting, woodturning, and much more.

The club has nominated a set number of vehi-cles for the dis-play and the sub-sequent parade.

To participate, you will need to advise Ray Willis (the organiser on the day) by sending an email to [email protected] or

an SMS to 0407 347 340.

You need to commit to taking part on the day (sorry no maybes) and to have your vehicle on display from 8:30am to 3:30pm, then take part in the parade.

For those coming from Perth, there will be a convoy leaving Alfred‟s (Guildford) at 7:00am sharp.

For those living closer to Toodyay or maybe staying in Toodyay on the Saturday night before, the meeting point will be at the corner of Tood-yay and Northam Rds (rest stop car park just outside Toodyay) from 8:00am.

Anybody wanting to come on the run, but not display their car, you are most welcome to join the convoy from Al-fred‟s or meet us at the intersection above.

Golf Wagon Golf Wagon offers highest level of passive safety

Visually, the Golf Wagon follows the styling of the current Volkswagen “design DNA”. Clear horizontal lines and bold styling of the headlights de-fine its appearance. And so the bumper, radiator grille, engine bonnet and fenders and highlights were all transferred from the new Golf.

The design is characterised by a black, horizontally styled grille and body-coloured bumpers. In its lower front section, the Wagon also has an additional large air intake. Starting with the Comfortline version, chrome inserts are integrated in the radiator grille.

Perfection in details. The Golf Wagon also preserves the car body‟s excel-lent layout and high level of everyday utility. The development team focused on perfection in the details. Attaining the best possible acoustic properties on the wagon was a top priority for Volkswagen. In this context, the body was equipped with new detailed solu-tions in a variety of areas. Highly ef-fective acoustic damping is imple-mented in the front windscreen, which eliminates nearly all high-frequency noise in the three kHz range that is very typical in vehicles with diesel en-gines.

In addition, many secondary noises have been eliminated or reduced right at their source. In particular, this was achieved in all belt drives, the turbo-charger and charge air distribution channels as well as in the heating and cooling blower. Noise comfort has been further improved by a new gen-eration of turbo-diesels with common rail injection, as well as integration of TSI petrol engines that are known for their quiet operation.

Passive Safety – Highest Level of Pro-tection. The Golf Wagon is being of-fered with a seamless package of safety features as standard equip-

ment. On the passive side, there is a safety body (including opti-mised pedestrian protec-tion), six airbags and a patented head restraint system for driver and front passenger.

Front, side and head airbags. The driver and front passenger airbags and safety belt system together form a precisely coordinated front re-straint system on the wagon. The side airbags are integrated in the backrests of the front seats. They protect the chest, abdomen and pelvis and have been optimally tuned to the car‟s more rigid side structure. Integrating the side airbags in the back-rests assures optimal airbag positioning in re-lation to the driver and front passenger. Further-more, standard head airbags help to prevent high biome-chanical loads to the head.

Specifically, these airbags cover an area along the side windows extend-ing from the A pillar to the C pillar, of-fering maximum protection at all seat-ing positions regardless of body size. That is because protection over a large area prevents the head and ex-tremities from swinging out and pre-vents objects from penetrating into the car‟s interior.

Since the head airbags remain inflated for a long time, they even retain much of their effectiveness in secondary collisions such as in the case of a roll-over accident.

Instruments of new Golf also in Golf Wagon. Up to 1,495 litres cargo space for even the largest hauling tasks.

The Golf Wagon demonstrates tre-mendous quality. The high quality of the materials that are used is espe-cially evident in the interior. This high level of value is a common thread run-

ning through the interior, especially when it comes to the car‟s instru-ments. The look and feel of the materi-als, details such as brushed chrome accents and the round instruments and steering wheels taken directly from the Passat CC all leave the im-pression that one is actually sitting in a vehicle of the next higher market seg-ment.

The interior ergonomics also reflect advanced development. All of the car‟s functional components are easy to operate. These include controls for the climate control system where fitted (Climatronic) - initially introduced on the Passat CC. Sometimes it is the smallest of details that make the greatest impression. Consider the leather seats: robust leather is being used in the Golf Wagon. Its surface properties make dye transfer, such as from jeans, passé even with very light-coloured leather.

Cockpit. The instrument panel of the Golf Wagon offers a clear, well organ-ised geometry with uncompromising ease of operation and a high level of timeless elegance. On initial contact, one is immediately impressed by the luxurious soft materials of the upper cockpit area and door trim that com-plement the design of the instruments.

The instruments of the Golf Wagon match the instrument styling in the new Golf. Prominently displayed are the two round instruments with brushed chrome bezels, which are standard; the tachometer is on the left, and the speedometer on the right.

Also designed as a round instru-ment is the engine tempera-ture gauge; it is integrated in the lower part of the tachometer. Its coun-terpart is the fuel gauge integrated in the speedometer.

Gauge scale mark-ings are backlit in white (regardless of whether the head-lights are on or off); while turn signal indicators are in red. Also designed in white now are the graphics of the multifunction dis-play (MFD) – located between the ta-chometer and speedometer – which is standard equipment. An upshift indica-tor is integrated in the MFD on manual equipped models with either a diesel or petrol engine.

Like the main instruments, air vents near the instrument cluster also have brushed chrome bezels. There is one vent at each end of the instrument panel for driver and passenger, and two in the centre console. In addition, a vent for the side windows is inte-grated in each of the A-pillar trim pan-els. Complementing the chrome bez-els, the upper and lower sections of instruments are separated by dark silver accents (“Titanium”) on the “T r e n d l i n e ” ve r s i o n . I n t h e “Comfortline” equipment version the accents are glossy black (“Black Pyra-mid”).

Centre console. All of the controls ar-ranged on the centre console are readily and equally accessible to driver and front passenger. Right at

the top is the hazard f lasher switch, optimally located between the air vents. On the level below this, there is the audio or radionavigation sys-

tem. The third level of controls con-tains interfaces to the heating and ventilation or climate control system. Another set of switches is located di-rectly in front of the gearshift lever for activating or deactivating systems such as ESP and “Park Assist”.

If the Golf Wagon is equipped with an automatic climate control system (Climatronic), a new set of controls is provided. There are two control knobs, one on the left and one on the right, for selecting temperatures in 1 degree i n c r e -

m e n t s separately for

driver and passenger sides. They are also used to activate seat heating. Naturally, the temperature for the two sides can be controlled jointly too. The main operating modes of the Clima-tronic (“Auto”, completely “Off”, “Dual”, “AC”) and blower levels are set in the area between the two control knobs. Located in the upper area are controls for ventilation modes, rear window heating and recirculation functions.

Further down the centre console, at the height of the handbrake lever, are the familiar storage compartment and an AUX-IN port that can be used to connect devices such as an MP3 player.

The optional Media Device Interface (MDI) port can also be integrated in the storage compartment of the centre armrest. This USB port is used to in-terface to a wide variety of memory sources for the audio system. For ex-ample, an iPod – including its special control functions – can also be inte-grated in the system as a music source with a suitable cable.

Seats. Volkswagen is offering the Golf Wagon in a range of different seat configurations, depending on the equipment line. The “Trendline” base version already has excellent con-toured seats in black cloth upholstery. The comfort seats of the Golf Wagon Comfortline are now designed to be even more ergonomic. The cross-stitched fabric of the seat and backrest surfaces creates a clear visual con-trast to exterior surfaces.

The latest generation of the best-selling five-seater offers exceptionally spacious conditions. In front, the maxi-mum interior height is 972 millimetres

(seat in lowest position). The rear seating area offers a

maximum interior height of 969 milli-metres, depend-ing on the ver-sion.

Cargo area. The Golf Wagon is a

compact space wonder. When the

cargo partition net is installed and cargo is

loaded up to the height of the top of the rear bench seat-

back, the Wagon provides up to 690 litres of load volume; up to the load sill at window height it is a maxi-mum of 505 litres. When the rear bench seat is folded down and the interior space is fully utilised, up to 1,495 litres of cargo volume can be stowed in the Golf Wagon.

When the rear bench is folded, the continuous flat cargo area of the Golf Wagon up to the driver‟s backrest measures 1.70 meters. Bins offer stor-age space under the cargo floor and in the side panelling. Even when the standard factory-installed asymmetri-cal split bench is not lowered, a re-spectable 1.07 meters of cargo length is still available. Maximum width: 1.29 meters. Interior width between wheel wells is 1.01 meter. Operating the asymmetrically split rear bench seat is exceptionally easy. Release buttons next to the outer head restraints disen-gage the backrests from their anchor-ages so that they can be folded for-ward. A clever detail is a red indicator, visible from the front seats too, that warns if one of the two rear backrests is not fully engaged when lifting the seatback up again.

area, which is standard equipment in the Comfortline version. When folded down, it creates an especially large pass-through to the cargo area, mak-ing it easy to stow long and bulky sports equipment such as paddles or skis.

Load safety: Preventive practical solu-tions. To prevent cargo from shifting into the passenger area during a colli-sion or hard braking, the Golf Wagon is equipped with a cargo partition net. Normally, it is installed behind the rear bench seat. However, when the rear backrest is folded forward, the net can be anchored near the front backrests.

Providing for additional cargo safety are four tie-down eyes located on the right and left side panels in the cargo area, and at the front of the cargo area. When they are not in use, they can be folded away without leaving any corners or edges protruding.

Smaller thin objects will also fit in the storage bin beneath the variable cargo floor. Just as practical: The special bag hooks that fold out from the side panelling of the cargo area. They are standard equipment and prevent shopping bags from spilling their con-tents into the cargo area while driving.

Panoramic sunroof creates a bright ambiance. As a special equipment option Volkswagen is offering a newly designed panoramic sunroof. With a length of 1.36 metres and width of 0.87 metres, its transparent surface

spans a large section of the interior, creating a pleasant, light-filled ambi-ance.

The roof consists of two halves; the front section can be raised or fully opened. To preserve full interior height, the section that opens is driven out above the closed section of roof. An electrically-powered sunshade of-fers protection from intense sunlight.

Power range from 77kW to 118kW; all engines fulfil Euro-5 standard. New common rail TDI consumes signifi-cantly less fuel. Volkswagen will be offering the Golf Wagon with two pet-rol and two diesel engine options. Their power ranges from 77 kW to 118kW. As in the new Golf, the latest generation of common rail turbo-diesels (TDI) is used in the Golf Wagon.

Petrol engines – More fuel efficient than ever. The petrol engines are available in two outputs, 90kW and 118kW. Clearly, the petrol engines are pioneers in fuel efficiency. Once again, the TSI engines are taking the stage as prime examples of efficiency: the new Golf 1.4 TSI with 90kW con-sumes just 6.2 litres (DSG) of Pre-mium (95) Unleaded Petrol (144 g/km CO2) in combined cycle. Even the new 118kW top version of the 1.4 TSI attains a combined consumption figure of just 6.3 litres on the combined cy-cle.

The turbocharged TSI with 90 kW is one of the most advanced petrol en-gines in the world. There is hardly an-other petrol engine that can match its impressive power curve with such fuel efficiency. In the manual Golf Wagon, the four-cylinder direct injection engine requires just 6.7 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres (156 g/km CO2). A six-speed gearbox is standard with this engine.

The Golf Wagon 1.4 TSI with 90kW is even more fuel efficient when shifted via the optional 7-speed DSG; this configuration yields a combined fuel consumption of 6.2 litres (144 g/km CO2).

The car‟s fuel efficiency contrasts with its excellent driving performance. Like all engines of the Golf Wagon, this TSI also fulfils the Euro-5 standard.*

This highly praised and award-winning engine develops its peak power of 90kW at 5,000-5500 rpm. The en-gine‟s maximum torque of 200 Newton-metre is available over a broad speed

range extending from a low 1,500 to 4,000 rpm.

1.4 TSI with 118 kW - As the most powerful petrol engine in the Golf Wagon, Volkswagen uses a four cylin-der that is both turbo- and super-charged and has a power of 118 kW (at 5,900 rpm). Of special interest here is the engine‟s specific power: the 1.4 litre engine attains 84.3 kW per litre displacement. Its maximum torque of 240 Newton-metre is available be-tween 1,750 and 4,500 rpm. Like the 90kW, this engine is also exceptionally fuel-efficient. The 118 kW TSI attains a top value in savings at 6.3 litres per 100 kilometres (equivalent to 148 g/km CO2).

Diesel engines – More efficient and quieter. As seen in the new Golf,

Volkswagen has converted all TDI engines over to 16-valve common rail engines with 1.6 and 2.0 litre displace-ment. Besides their economy and agil-ity, the new TDI engines also distin-guish themselves by their low-noise properties. Two balancing shafts on the 103kW version put an end to un-desirable vibrations too. In addition, a new engine bearing design ensures that the engines are better isolated from the car body. Volkswagen will be offering the 7-speed DSG as an option on the 77kW version. The 103kW ver-sion comes standard with 6-speed DSG.

1.6 TDI with 77 kW / 105 PS - Techni-cally, the 1,598 cm3 TDI sets the high-est standard in its market segment. Via the common rail system, the diesel

fuel is injected directly into the com-bustion chamber at a pressure of 1,600 bar. Special piezo actuators

control the multiple injections and fuel quantities with maximum precision.

To reduce internal engine friction as much as possible, the crankshaft, valve and oil pump drives were opti-mised. A square stroke/bore ratio minimises friction losses at the cylin-der liners.

Furthermore, losses in the f low of oil and coolant were reduced, and fric-tional losses were reduced in air in-duction and charge air flows. This has resulted in a TDI line-up that offers uncompromisingly low fuel consump-tion and emission values without lack-ing even the slightest in comfort or dynamic performance.

Its exceptionally high maximum torque of 250 Newton-metres lies between 1,900 and 2,500 rpm, which promotes an effortless, economical style of driv-ing.

Combined fuel consumption for the new engine aboard the

Golf Wagon TDI is an excellent low 4.7 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres (124 g/km CO2). With a 7-speed DSG, these values are 5.2 litres and 135 g/km CO2.

2.0 TDI with 103 kW / 140 PS - The 103 kW TDI is also exceptionally fuel efficient and comes standard with a 6-speed DSG transmission. Driven by this engine, the Golf Wagon only needs 5.7 litres of diesel to cover a hundred kilometres (149 g/km CO2).

In addition, the TDI shines at practi-cally every engine speed with cate-gorically high torque; it already deliv-ers its maximum torque of 320 Newton-metre starting at 1,750 rpm and holds it constant up to 2,500 rpm.

Fuel induction in the large direct injec-tion turbo-diesel engine is handled by the latest generation common rail sys-tem. Up to 1,800 bar injection pres-sure and special eight-hole injection nozzles deliver especially fine atomi-sation of the diesel fuel.

The eight-hole injection nozzles are controlled by the latest generation of piezo inline injectors. Electrically-controlled piezo crystals, assisted by a hydraulic element, inject fuel in frac-tions of a second.

Compared to conventional solenoid valves, piezo technology enables more flexible injection processes with smaller and more precisely metered fuel volumes. The benefit: a very quiet and pleasantly smooth running en-gine, exceptional responsiveness and low fuel consumption and emissions. Also having a positive effect on acous-tics is the completely maintenance-free toothed belt drive of the camshaft.

Thanks to the conversion to common rail technology and numerous other acoustic measures such as a noise-damping film in the windscreen, both

Golf Wagon TDI versions are among the quietest diesel models in their class.

DSG: 6 and 7-speed direct shift gear-boxes - All TDI and TSI versions of the Golf Wagon are available with the Di-rect Shift Gearbox (DSG). Depending on the torque of the engine, the Golf either gets a 6-speed or 7-speed DSG. The extremely efficient and agile DSG is completely supplanting the classic torque-converter automatic in the Golf. DSG is standard on the Golf Wagon 118 TSI Comfortline and the 103 TDI Comfortline.

shifting unlike that of any previous transmission.

Besides their different numbers of for-ward gears, the two DSGs differ tech-nically in their clutch type. While two dry clutches are used in the 7-speed DSG, the dual clutch of the 6-speed DSG runs wet in an oil bath. True of both transmissions: even the most experienced professional drivers can-not even approach the shifting speed of either DSG version. Another fact: more than any other automatic, the dual clutch transmissions have the potential to reduce fuel consumption and thereby emissions.

The two DSG variants are each spe-cialists in their applications. While the 6-speed DSG shines when paired with torquestrong engines (up to 350 New-ton-metre), the 7-speed DSG is espe-cially effective in combination with smaller engines (up to 250 Newton metre).

All Equipment Lines Significantly Up-graded. The Golf Wagon is available in the two equipment versions - Trend-line and Comfortline. Always standard in both versions are six airbags, the ESP electronic stabilisation program and a multifunction trip computer. Moreover, there are specific details that distinguish each version.

Standard equipment - Golf Wagon Trendline. The entry version even of-fers a considerable array of standard features. The new model is distin-guished by standard features such as

the multifunction display (trip com-puter), visible tailpipes, “Titanium” decorative accents, daytime running lights integrated in the headlights, dual-tone horn, ESP, door handles and door mirror housings painted in body colour and the semiautomatic “Climatic” climate control system. Other standard features include elec-tric windows (front and rear), remote central locking, cargo area lighting, various storage compartments includ-ing one in the roofliner, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors and roof rails.

Golf Wagon Comfortline. The differen-tiating features are even more distinc-tive on the Golf Wagon Comfortline. Above and beyond “Trendline” items, the additional features that now under-score the high-end character of this version include 16-inch alloy wheels, comfort front seats, a chrome light switch, new decorative inserts (“Black

Pyramid”), chrome trim strips on the side windows, chrome roof rails, chrome frames around the horizontal radiator louvers, leather for the new three-spoke multi-function steering wheel, leather gearshift knob and handbrake lever.

Radio and Navigation systems. Volks-wagen is offering the Golf Wagon with two radio systems and one navigation system. Hands-free telephone units can be added to any of the infotain-ment systems. There also is an op-tional USB port (Media Device Inter-face).

All radio and radio-navigation systems have a MP3-capable CD player. The radio systems carry the designations RCD310 and RCD510; their counter-part with an additional navigation sys-tem is the RNS510. A rear view cam-era integrated in the tailgate can also be interfaced to the RCD510 and RNS510 units. The RNS510 utilises a 30 GB hard drive for navigation and entertainment.

The RCD510 and RNS510 are also equipped with a user-friendly touch-screen. This colour screen measures five inches (400 x 240 pixels). Further-more, the RNS is equipped with a SD card slot and a dual tuner. The SD card can be used to save MP3 files for music reproduction.

Park Assist. The “Park Assist” parking assistance system being offered in the Golf Wagon is an example of high-end technology. The system is capable of nearly automatic reverse parking in parallel parking spaces that are just 1.1 metre longer than the vehicle. The

Well it seems like a while ago now that we went on the run to the Old Coast Road Brewery. Thanks to everybody that took part.

This was a most successful run with numbers swelling on the day to over 40 people in a large variety of VWs. So many that we had to relocate our start point.

Unfortunately, one of the convoy had engine trouble on the day and the RAC

was called to help...

driver just needs to operate the gas pedal, brake and clutch; meanwhile, the Golf Wagon steers into the pre-measured space, guided by sensors. Whenever the steering process is in-terrupted by manual steering, “Park Assist” is deactivated. The intuitively operated system is started by pressing a button located right in front of the gearshift knob.

While driving down the road at speeds up to 30 km/h and at a distance of 0.5 to 1.5 metres from

other parked cars, ultrasonic sensors detect all parking spaces aligned with the roadway on either the left or right (depending on the turn signal direction that is set), and a control module com-putes the ideal parking path. “Park Assist” communicates the starting po-sition to the driver via the multifunction display. Then the driver shifts into re-verse gear.

Now appearing on the display is the message “Steering control active!

Watch your sur-roundings!” The driver only needs to accelerate, apply the clutch and per-form braking during the rest of the park-ing process; the steering is handled by the Golf Wagon. As soon as the parking sensors switch to a continu-ous signal at the rear, this indicates

that the optimal distance to the next vehicle has been reached (approx. 20 centimetres). If the speed is excessive and/or the driver makes any sort of steering wheel movement, “Park As-sist” is instantaneously deactivated.

Generally, the entire parking process after shifting to reverse gear takes only 15 seconds.

Rear view camera. The Golf Wagon will also be available with a rear view camera. As soon as the reverse gear is engaged, the camera integrated in the tailgate monitors the space behind the Golf Wagon.

The system can be ordered in con-junction with the touchscreen radio and radio-navigation systems RCD510 and RNS510.

Camera images are transmitted to the touch-screen as real-time images. The path steered is also shown by orienta-tion lines on the screen.

The camera itself has a wide-angle lens. Horizontally, it acquires objects over an angular range of 130 degrees, and vertically over a range of 100 de-

grees.

Well how do you write a report on a car that has already won so many awards in its non-GTI format as well as a GTI, and has had so many ex-perts write about it both in Australia and overseas?

Firstly an introduction, as if you needed to be told. The original Golf GTI was planned over 30 years ago as a limited series of 5,000 cars, but with five generations of the GTI later, more than 1.7 million have been sold worldwide. These sales and the fact that the GTI is always in demand (and sometimes short supply) gives it a well deserved place in the market.

Now more than three decades down the track, as the photos show, the GTI still does not rely on the „plastic fan-tastic‟ add ons, bonnet scoops, or gaudy stripes that appear on many other hot hatches to attract a buyer.

As with the new Golf, the GTI looks lower and wider with a subtle change in design being the name of the game. The front continues to have the usual

honeycomb designed grill and the simple GTI badge while the air dam below now has vertical fog lights. The rear reveals little differ-ence from the standard Golf except the two sepa-rate exhaust tailpipes that appear to lower the stance of the car, and again the simple GTI badge to iden-tify it.

The basics of the original GTI remain - the great feeling of being one with the car - fitting like a glove around the

driver and responding to everything the driver requires - the engine cruises along until you need that little bit extra from it and it responds without effort - sitting on the road so well as to never let go, but when you push it a little, it hugs the road even more as though on rails – its just soooo good.

Then just when you thought it was the best, you can move from normal or comfort to the sport mode and the ex-perience starts all over again – the ride and handling just gets better and better.

It is worth mentioning again that the Golf was awarded a maximum five-star rating by the EuroNCAP crash testing agency along with a maximum five-star safety rating by the Austral-asian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). You can feel this safety all around you and it gives you great con-fidence on the road.

However, I see the day-to-day usabil-ity of the GTI as its main feature. I have seen Ford advertise the Falcon XR6 as the family car with the little bit extra. The Golf GTI is that daily vehi-cle with that little bit or should say a lot extra. It is at home in bumper to bumper traffic at 10kms per hour as much as it is on the open highway at a steady 110kph. It is just as easy to drive around the suburban streets and roundabouts as it is on the Freeway, while it has that energy reserve for easy overtaking or the spurt of power needed to get out of a hazardous situation.

The car has great comfort for up to 4 adults with the likelihood that the aver-age car runs with one person most of the time. The hatch (or boot) is quite large and would handle most people‟s luggage for a long trip or just to the airport and it would definitely handle all your grocery shopping with room to spare for a couple slabs of beer.

The best fuel reading I got over the 600 kms in the car was 4.9l per 100kms while on cruise control at 90kph on a relatively flat section of the Freeway. However, after driving it over many types of terrain at various speeds, with some heavy acceleration

at times, I still managed a rather good average of 8.3l per 100 kms. This I consider is a very low consumption for such a performance vehicle.

Well there doesn't seem a lot more to say, except that i thoroughly enjoyed my time driving this quite remarkable

car and I would not hesitate to accept the offer again some time in the future.

I now think about what could the Golf R be like, would it be better than the GTI or just more expen-sive with some extra gadgets.

Yet to drive the Golf Wagon, but what if they had a Golf Wagon GTI, something like what Audi does to create a super „estate‟. The mind bog-gles around what could be.

However, for now, lets just saviour the Golf GTI for what it is, a great car (Golf) just made a little more exciting to drive when you want to let your hair down - no bald jokes please!

So to sum it all up, I think you get the feeling from this article that I like the

Golf GTI just a little bit - alright a lot. As with the title of this article, you just

Fault Identifi-cation & Fix

- Electric Fuel Pump

Staring problems VW Golf 2.0 TDI and other similar models fitted with an

electric fuel pump.

I own a 2005 Golf TDI with 55,000 kms on the clock. I had purchased the vehicle from my brother and therefore was sure of any mechanical issues the vehicle had during his ownership from new.

The only reported problem had been a peculiar engine „decided to stop‟ inci-dent whilst his wife was driving the vehicle. The tank was half full, no mat-ter what the vehicle refused to re start. Under warranty the vehicle was con-veyed to the workshop where no end of diagnoses testing failed to find the fault.

Eventually the motor started with the aid of „start you bastard‟ sprayed into the air cleaner induction hose. The fault did not occur again, hot or cold, until approximately two weeks after we purchased the car. At this point I must emphasis that the vehicle had a perfect service history.

One warm morning the wife could not start the car. She reported a shudder and eventual dashboard advice to „STOP‟. Running late for work she had to wait for the RAC to attend our home later that afternoon. I had returned from work and witnessed the RAC mechanic perform the same routine. I cranked the motor whilst the same spray was pumped into the induction tube. It started. “Hang on” I said; “What happens now?”. Get it diag-nosed was the reply.

We arranged to have the vehicle fully serviced at the same outlet and re-quested they trace the fault through diagnoses or just mechanical know how. No luck. Few weeks later same result. Back to the VW state of the art service centre. Full day this time. Sen-ior technician could not find the prob-lem.

This can‟t go on I thought. Happened again so onto the RAC truck for a once a year free tow and back to the VW shop.

Now this time they had the vehicle went in wouldn‟t start from cold. Diag-noses worked and indicated a faulty fuel pump. Replaced with a new one, however VW would not accept that the fault had originated during warranty so we became $416.00 out of pocket.

Now if the same issue is experienced by other owners, please advise your service repairer to check the manual operation of the fuel pump. For some unknown reason the fault is not picked up on the electronic diagnoses. Some-time I wonder about computers and vehicles. The analysis skills of the mechanic will be lost for ever.

I have asked the VW service centre to have the problem logged on their world wide fault finding site. Strange that it wasn‟t on there before, I doubt whether we were the first ones to have the problem.

Otherwise brilliant car...

VW Golf is Safest Car of

2009 Successful model from Wolfsburg wins top EuroNCAP honours.

For the first time ever, the EuroNCAP Institute in Brussels compiled all of its crash test results for the year 2009 and named the safest car of the year: The Golf won out against the competi-tion with a total of 103 points.

The Golf had already attained a five-star EuroNCAP rating in the year 2008. Initially, this testing programme − conducted since 1997 − only as-sessed frontal crashes, side crashes and pedestrian protection. After stricter criteria were introduced at the beginning of 2009, the Golf was re-tested, and it performed impressively in all four categories: Occupant pro-tection of adults, protection of children, pedestrian protection and supporting safety and driver assistance systems. The bestseller from Wolfsburg once again attained the coveted fivestar rating with the top score of 103 points, earning it the title of “Safest Car of 2009”. In total, 33 cars were tested last year under the new, stricter and more extensive EuroNCAP crash test-ing procedure.

Electronic safety and assistance sys-tems that help prevent accidents and serious injuries are now also incorpo-rated in the rating of the new, stricter assessment method. The Golf offers maximum safety with safety features that include ESP with counter-steer assist, ABS with braking assistance, anti-slip regulation (ASR), electronic differential lock (EDS), engine drag torque control (MSR) as well as air-bags for driver and front passenger including knee airbag for the driver and a head airbag system for front and rear passengers with side air-bags.

The Golf not only fulfils European safety standards. In 2008, the com-pact car earned the prestigious title of “Top Safety Pick” − awarded by the

independent US safety institute “Insurance Institute for Highway Safety” (IIHS). In this evaluation, vehi-cles were tested in a frontal crash at 64 km/h and in a side crash at 50 km/h with a movable barrier shaped like the front end of an SUV. In addition, seat behaviour was studied in a rear-end crash.

New 2010

Passat Revised Range with New Entry Model and Additional Features

The 2010 Passat has taken yet an-other step forward. This time in the form of a revised engine range, addi-tional features, and most significantly, a new entry price, thereby setting a new benchmark amongst the large well-appointed cars.

The 1.8 litre 118TSI engine with 118kW of power and 250 Nm of torque is now available as the new entry model into the Passat range en-suring remarkable performance com-bined with superb fuel efficiency. The Passat 2.0 litre 103TDI and the Passat 2.0 147TSI have been discontinued from the model line-up.

The most popular Passat model, the 2.0 litre 125TDI, now enjoys the luxury of a Highline upgrade where distin-

guishing exterior features include sporty features such as a radiator grille with chrome plated strips, front fog lights and Monte Carlo 17x7 ½” alloy wheels, whilst new interior fea-tures include Napa leather appointed upholstery, sports luxury fronts seats, and brushed aluminium interior deco-rative trims.

The Passat V6 FSI Highline has also extended its standard equipment list, which combines exterior features such as Chicago 18x8” alloy wheels and sport suspension with technologies such as 12-way electric front seats with 3 position memory for the driver as well as an automatic kerb function on passenger‟s side exterior mirror when reversing and Media Device In-terface (MDI).

The sporty performance choice in the Passat range, the Passat R36, has been enhanced with dark tinted rear window and rear side windows (65% light absorbing) as well as Media De-vice Interface (MDI).

Polo is “Car of

the Year 2010” Wolfsburg, January 25, 2010 – This particular award enjoys the most pres-tigious reputation and it was presented to Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn at a ceremony in Wolfsburg this evening. The new Polo has now therefore been officially crowned car of the year 2010.

In his acceptance speech, Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG, paid special tribute to the employ-ees: “It takes a great team to build winners like the Polo. I am proud the Volkswagen Group has such a strong

and motivated team that has made the Polo with its cutting-edge technology, quality and safety affordable for every-one.”

The jury comprising 59 leading motor-ing journalists from 23 European countries already chose the best new cars at the end of last November. 33 rivals were tested by the jury this year. Seven candidates made it to the final, and the Polo emerged as the winner.

Apart from the coveted “Car of the Year” award, the new Polo has also scooped up several other trophies since its market launch last summer: the list of successes includes the “Green” and “Golden Steering Wheel” (Springer Verlag), “Best Car of 2009” (auto motor sport) and “Auto Trophy” (Autozeitung).

The Polo was also awarded the cov-eted five stars in the new, more strin-gent Euro NCAP crash test.

The Polo is currently available in a choice of seven engines – four petrol and three diesel.

The Polo BlueMotion 1.2 TDI (55 kW / 75 PS) epitomizes the potential of the three new diesel engines; with an av-erage fuel consumption of 3.3 liters per 100 kilometers and 87g CO2 per kilometer, this model is currently the world‟s most economical five-seater with the lowest emissions.

At the event celebrating the roll-out of the 11,111,111th Polo, the German President toured the new Volkswagen plant in Maharashtra State accompa-nied by a delegation of 30 high-ranking representatives from politics and industry. The group found out about the training programs for the newly recruited employees and the innovative production processes at the plant.

The Pune plant is one of the most modern in the Volkswagen Group and covers all stages in the production

process from press shop through body shop and paint shop to final assembly. It has a maximum annual capacity of 110,000 vehicles. In addition to the Volkswagen Polo, the Pune plant also builds the Škoda Fabia.

With a total financial commitment amounting to 580 million euros, the Volkswagen plant in Pune is the larg-est investment to date by a German company in India. Volkswagen plans to employ some 2,500 people locally by the end of 2010.

Polo GTI Wolfsburg / Geneva, 19 February 2010 - The Polo GTI is back. A power-ful 132 kW / 180 PS comeback! This GTI lives up to its legendary name: Superior handling properties unified with uncompromising engine dynam-ics and a maximum of safety. The list of high-tech features runs through the new Polo GTI like a common theme. Take the engine: This Polo is powered by a new 1.4-litre TSI with petrol direct injection plus turbo- and supercharg-ing. Textbook downsizing. Power is transferred to the front wheels via a 7-speed DSG, which is standard equip-ment. An electronic transverse differ-ential lock (XDS) reduces the ten-dency to understeer and especially improves handling in quick driving through curves.

Equipped in this way, the Polo GTI – available in a three-door and a five-door version – is extremely agile and super efficient underway: Weighing 1,194 kg, the Polo GTI accelerates to 100 km/h in just 6.9 seconds and

reaches a top speed of 229 km/h. At the same time, it is the most fuel effi-cient and lowest emitting GTI of all times. Combined fuel consumption: just 5.9 litres per 100 kilometres. That is equivalent to CO2 emissions of just 139 g/km.

By comparison: Its direct predecessor with regard to power – also equipped with a 180 PS 1.8-litre turbo engine - consumed 7.9 litres per 100 kilome-tres (equivalent to 188 g/km CO2). This means that the new car is 25 per-cent more fuel efficient. That‟s real progress. The GTI is also the first Polo to be available with bi-xenon head-lights including cornering light, LED daytime running light and corner marker light as well as a panoramic tilt/slide sunroof.

TSI drive: More power by engine charging

The tradition of the sporty top Polo model versions reaches back nearly a quarter of a century and is based on the legendary Polo Coupé G40 from 1986. As the first car ever to be equipped with a mechanical G-charger – it re-defined the vehicle dynamic limits in this segment. Its engine had a power of 83 kW / 113 PS and made the Polo G40, which in top condition today is a coveted collector‟s item, nearly 200 km/h fast. In contrast, the predecessor of the new Polo GTI first switched over to turbo technology in the year 2006. Its base version had a power of 110 kW / 150 PS; the legen-dary Cup Edition then took this figure up to 180 PS.

Back to the future: At the end of May, the first new Polo GTIs will appear in Germany, and will then progressively be introduced across Europe and in Japan. The combination of direct in-jection, supercharger and turbo-charger under one engine bonnet will generate plenty of excitement in this segment. The 180 PS Euro-5 16-valve four-cylinder engine reaches its maxi-mum power at 6,200 rpm. Its maxi-mum torque of 250 Newton-metres is also impressive for an engine of this size. It is already there from 2,000 rpm and stays at a constantly high level up to 4,500 rpm. These numbers highlight the fact that very torque-strong and rpm-loving 1.4 TSI has an easy game of it with the Polo GTI. It breathes a rare level of agility into the quick front-wheel drive car in all of life‟s situations and at all engine speeds.

DSG transmission: Extremely efficient, extremely sporty

Having a positive effect on this dy-namic is the standard 7-speed DSG. The direct shift gearbox unifies the sports appeal and economy of a man-ual gearbox with the operating con-venience of an automatic. As an alter-native to the fully-automatic mode, the DSG may also be shifted manually – either by gearshift lever via the Tip-tronic shift gate or via the standard shift paddle on the steering wheel.

Sport chassis: 15 millimetres lower and 17-inch tyres

The top performing variant in the Polo model range is a thoroughly sporty and safe car. Among the systems re-sponsible for this is the GTI sport chassis including ESP and the XDS electronic transverse differential lock. It ensures that the Polo GTI‟s power is cleanly transferred to the road, even in tight serpentine curves. The running gear is based on the fundamental lay-out of a McPherson front suspension and semi-independent rear suspen-sion combined with exceptionally dy-namic tuning. New, stiffer dampers are linked to specially modified springs that lower the ride height by 15 milli-metres compared to “Normal ver-sions”. The effect: lower angles of body roll and a lower centre of gravity. Both have positive effects vehicle dy-namics through curves. Serving the same purpose are the low-profile tyres (215/40 R17 87V) on alloy wheels in GTI-typical 5-hole “Denver” styling (7Jx17), whose look the new top Polo shares with the Golf GTI.

Perfectly regulated: ESP plus XDS

sets the direction

When it comes to safety, the Polo GTI is fully equipped right from the factory, e.g. with generously dimensioned brakes and the standard ESP stabili-sation programme. Networked with this are numerous other electronic modules such as the anti-lock braking (ABS), hill hold control, anti-slip regu-lation (ASR), engine drag torque con-trol (MSR) and electronic differential locks (EDS). Tyre pressure is also sensed by the standard tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS).

A modern extension of familiar EDS functions is the XDS electronic trans-verse differential lock, like the one Volkswagen presented for the first time on the Golf GTI. XDS improves handling through fast curves and cali-brates the car to be more “neutral”, since it prevents slip of the unloaded wheel at the inside of the curve by active brake intervention, improving traction. This system, standard equip-ment on the Polo GTI, accesses exist-ing sensor data such as steering wheel angle, yaw rate and wheel speeds. The effect: more safety and driving fun, because the Polo GTI steers even more precisely with XDS.

GTI features: Sporty and legendary

The new top model in the Polo range is easy to recognize as a GTI at first glance – inside and outside. It openly displays the visual insignia of this unique badge.

Exterior: Here the sportiest Polo stands out from the crowd with the two classic red trim strips on its radiator grille. From its role model – the larger Golf GTI – it has adopted the honey-comb structure of the air inlets inserts

in the uniquely styled front apron. Also GTI-specific are the fender flares and the rear spoiler painted in body colour. Other exterior details of the Polo GTI include the already mentioned 17-inch alloy wheels in “Denver” styling that offer a clear view of the red painted brake callipers, as well as a custom-ised rear apron with a diffuser look in its lower section. Integrated on the left side are the chrome dual tailpipes of the exhaust system.

Two other features are available as options for the first time on the new Polo GTI in this model series: the electrically operated panoramic tilt/slide sunroof extending back to the B-pillars, and the completely new layout of the bi-xenon headlights. As men-tioned previously, also integrated in the dual headlights were the LED day-time running lights, corner marker lights and cornering lights.

Interior: Here too the 180-PS Polo im-presses with genuine GTI ambiance. This is already achieved by the stan-dard top sport seats with their classic fabric covers in typical diamond pat-tern, which stylishly recall the first GTIs of the 1970s. The roof liner, roof pillar trim, grab handles and sun visors are all styled in a sporty black; a glossy black surface treatment also decorates the panels of the centre console. They are coordinated with intentionally contrasting colour and material accents such as brushed chrome for the air vent surrounds and chrome accents for the round control knobs. Also completely styled in this brushed chrome look are the inside door handles, frames for the gearshift lever and parking brake, the DSG gearshift gate and the three spokes of the leather sport steering wheel. Styled in classic red are the distinctive decorative seams on the gearshift boot, parking brake grip and steering wheel.

Moreover, the extensive list of stan-dard features emphasise that sporti-ness and comfort are not incompatible concepts in the new Polo GTI. Along with the features already mentioned, they also include pedal caps in alu-minium look, electric window lifts in front (three-door) and rear (five-door), electric adjusting and heated door mir-rors, air conditioning, RF remote con-trol of central locking and front fog lights. right. Then there is of course a pas-sive safety package with driver and front passenger airbags, head-thorax side airbags and belt tensioners in front, as well as Isofix points on the rear bench seat for suitably fitted child seats – features that make this Volks-wagen not only the best and most fuel efficient Polo GTI since the model se-ries was begun, but also the safest.

Wolfsburg/Munich, 10 February 2010 - Volkswagen is unveiling the com-pletely redeveloped Touareg as a world premiere. It is the most techni-cally innovative “VW” since the brand has been in existence. This Touareg is reinterpreting the fascinating multipur-pose SUV idea in a contemporary way – thanks to a range of engines that are nearly 20 percent more fuel efficient and a large variety of new assistance and safety systems. The Touareg will also be the first and only off-roader in Europe by a German car maker to be available in a hybrid version too. It sets standards among fully off-road capable SUVs with petrol engines that have a fuel consumption value of just 8.2 litres fuel per 100 kilometres. The Touareg Hybrid can be driven up to 50 km/h in purely electric mode - emis-sions-free. Among the diesel engines, the Touareg V6 TDI with 7.4 litre com-bined fuel consumption now posts the

best value in the segment of genuine SUVs. Both versions, the Touareg Hybrid and V6 TDI, are the most fuel efficient petrol and diesel SUVs ever built in Europe in this large vehicle class.

New era SUV – lighter, more aerody-namic and fuel efficient

As has already been accomplished on the globally successful, smaller Ti-guan, Volkswagen is systematically striving for sustainability on the new Touareg too. The first precondition was met: The SUV was lightened by 208 kilograms in the base version! A quantum leap. Yet, the body has five percent greater torsional rigidity, which makes it the leader in its competitive class. A second precondition was met as well: Designers attained a signifi-cantly improved Cd value. Along with aerodynamic refinement efforts, an-other factor at work here is that this Touareg is built lower to the ground than the previous model. Together with front end styling based on the new Volkswagen design DNA, this results in a smaller frontal area. The third precondition: All engines, now offered with a standard 8-speed auto-matic transmission – a first in this mar-ket segment – demonstrate significant fuel economy advantages over the previous model; in some cases the advantage is far greater than two litres per 100 kilometres.

SUV for all trails – All-wheel drive in two versions

Also modified in pursuit of reduced fuel consumption was the standard all-wheel drive. In the base version ("4Motion"), all new generation Touaregs have all-wheel drive with

Torsen l imited-sl ip dif ferent ial (4MOTION; climbing ability: 31 de-grees). Like the Tiguan Track & Field, the Touareg also has an "Off-road driving programme", which - at the press of a button - tunes the ABS, EDS and ASR for off-road duty, acti-vates Hill Descent Assist and adjusts the automatic gearshift points.

Instead of a Torsen differential, the V6 TDI can be ordered with an optional "Terrain Tech Packet" that has an even more rugged transfer case de-signed for off-road duty. It includes reduction gearing and centre and rear differentials, each with up to 100 per-cent locking (4XMOTION; climbing ability: 45 degrees). Similar to the first Touareg generation, this version also has a rotary switch the driver now uses to adapt the car to specific duty conditions over five levels: 1. "On-Road"; 2. "Off-Road" (like "Off-road driving programme" plus automatic control of the mechanical locks); 3. Low (like "Off-road" plus activation of reduced gearing, higher shift points, no automatic upshift in manual mode); 4. Addition of centre differential lock; 5. Addition of rear differential lock. Equipped like this, the Touareg can conquer any terrain on Earth.

SUV for everyday driving – more space, more innovations

Volkswagen has not only made the new Touareg lighter, more fuel effi-cient and an agile performer; it has also made it into an even more versa-tile, all-round vehicle. The new interior was made more functional, the seats more comfortable and leg room in the rear is larger. Now the rear bench seat has 160 millimetres in longitudinal ad-justment, and the backrest angle can be adjusted. Electrically unlatched at the press of a button as an option, it folds down in seconds and frees up 1,642 litres of cargo space. Already standard equipment in the base ver-sion is a radio-CD and info system, which is intuitively controlled over a 6.5-inch touch-screen.

The parking brake is now activated by pushbutton. The engine (V6 versions) automatically shuts off at traffic lights and restarts as soon as the driver re-leases the brake pedal (Stop-Start system). As an option, the tailgate can be opened and closed by a RF remote control unit integrated in the car key. The largest panoramic sunroof of all SUVs provides for light even on over-cast days. utilises four cameras to detect the Touareg‟s surroundings and this en-hances safety. Also offering protection are up to nine airbags. Lane Assist ensures that the vehicle does not stray from the right path; meanwhile, Side Assist warns of vehicles approaching from the rear when changing lanes. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with integrated Front Assist can brake to a stop in an emergency and tension the seatbelts as a precautionary measure. Bi-Xenon headlights with Dynamic Light Assist perceive oncoming traffic and adjust the light beam to eliminate unwanted glare, and adaptive roll compensation ensures that the Touareg sits solidly on the street. For the first time, there will be special fea-tures on the new Touareg under the new "Exclusive" badge from Volks-

wagen Individual. Options that can be ordered include 19-inch alloy wheels ("Girona" type), fine wood inserts ("Olive Ash") and a leather interior ("Nappa") in the two-colour combina-tions "Dark Burgundy / Titan Black" or "Pepper Beige / Titan Black".

Touareg – the best of two worlds

About 500,000 car drivers chose to buy the first generation of the SUV. It is a luxury sport utility vehicle that of-fers a high level of comfort, sporty driving properties, avant-garde styling, excellent quality and unlimited expedi-tion capabilities – essentially the best of the passenger car and off-road worlds unified in one concept. This is now being followed up by the new Touareg – a high-end and versatile all-round vehicle that brings these two worlds together even more perfectly.

The Touareg will already be available at dealers in April.

This is the message of the new image and marketing campaign called “Think Blue.” which the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand is launching on February 27, 2010. Building on one of the best-known environmental labels in t h e au tom ob i le ind us t r y , "BlueMotion", Volkswagen is sending out a new signal for sustainable mobil-ity.

This corporate mindset is underscored by the use of blue as the predominant color in the campaign. The color is already established on the market in the Volkswagen brand logo and through the "BlueMotion" environ-mental label. Volkswagen is now sys-tematically continuing this tradition in combination with innovative elements.

"Our goal is to establish „Think Blue.‟ as an expression of our corporate mindset and a firm feature of the Volkswagen brand‟s ecologically sus-tainable activities," Luca de Meo, Head of Marketing at the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand, explained.
