1953 - 2013...Volkswagen commemorates 60 years in Australia
Good Month to you all members!
It is worth kicking this off with a massive thanks as the club memberships are at an all time high of 165!
It is so rewarding for the people putting in the effort to keep the club running. The membership num-
bers do help motivate the team to organize and make the Volkswagen community in all forms better and
better. More people are turning up to events than ever before and the forum is seeing new logins pop
up weekly and in general the vibe out there is excellent.
There is so much on the horizon for our club, next month starts with “Alfreds” as always, this is followed
by a cruise and BBQ at the lovely Meelup Beach organized by Kim Muste of the “Down south crew”.
The “Scarborough to Munster Garage” run is on the 16th March too (be sure to call and book your ticket
for the food vouchers for this one 0408 183 396). So far 40 tickets have been sold and more people are
coming just for the cruise. The convoy is going be a sight worth seeing and even better “being in it”.
That is 3 awesome things to do in one month alone!
Many of us at times have a Volkswagen off the road for either maintenance or repairs or even better res-
toration, or you might be between cars. I encourage you still come along to the events even in the
“other car” you are still most welcome.
See you out there or online.

Fresh from its WA licencing, the T3 had done less

of a test and clean out for it. Passed with flying

the usual place (Busselton Beachfront car park at
Signal Park) at 11:00am (instead of the normal
12:30pm) and we then departed at 11:30am for a
cruise to Meelup Beach for a BBQ.
Well despite the threat of a thunderstorm....that
didn't happen and a bit of rain on the cruise the
SW meet was great...and a change of format
brought out about a dozen cars.

1953 - 2013...Volkswagen commemorates 60 years in Australia
The Beetle - A VW Icon,
Reimagined When the original Beetle was
launched in 1938, it was known
simply as ‘the Volkswagen’ and
quickly acquired a raft of nick-
names from across the world.
Whatever the name, the Beetle’s
popularity is not in question, with
22.5 million sold over 74 years.
In the latest generation, an effi-
cient engine and innovative fea-
tures combine with heritage to
make a modern classic – an icon,
reimagined.
The design moves away from that
of the New Beetle of 1998 and
instead draws on cues from the
original Beetle and Beetle Ragster
concept shown in Detroit in 2005.
The Beetle is now longer, wider
and lower, giving it a more mas-
culine and dynamic appearance.
The Beetle now measures 4,278
mm in length (+149 mm), 1,808
mm in width (+87 mm) and
1,477 in height (-21 mm). The
track width front and rear, as well
as the wheelbase at 2,524 mm,
are also increased.
Overseen by Walter de Silva
(Volkswagen Group) and Klaus
Bischoff (Volkswagen Brand), with
Marc Lichte the team leader for
exterior design, the car’s new
proportions mean the roof ex-
tends back further, the wind-
screen is shifted back and the
rear section is now more akin to
that of the original Beetle.
Inside the cabin, the Beetle’s de-
signers created a modern, practi-
cal and distinctive appearance
with easy to identify and ergo-
nomic controls. Certain features,
such as the glovebox and colour
accent panels hark back to the
original. The boot capacity is a
practical 310 litres, up from 209
litres in the 1998 model. The Bee-
tle has four seats, with a split-fold
rear seat for added versatility.
A wide range of
innovative option-
al equipment is
also available,
ranging from
leather seats
through satellite
navigation to Bi-
Xenon headlights
with LED daytime
running lights –
some of which are
available for the
first time on a
Beetle.
There are also two optional pack-
ages available; Technology Pack-
age which offers Bi-Xenon head-
lights and LED daytime driving
lights, keyless access, electroni-
cally foldable exterior mirrors and
low tyre pressure indicators, and
Sports Package which includes
18" twister alloy wheels, dark
tinted rear side and rear windows,
sports instruments on dash and
gearshift paddles when DSG is
selected.
One economical engine will be
offered in Australia; the 1.4 litre
TSI twincharged petrol engine
which supplies 118kW of power
and 240Nm of torque. This engine
is paired with a 6-speed manual
transmission as standard or with
an optional 7-speed Direct Shift
Gearbox (DSG).
As well as being economical and
environmentally sound, the Beetle
is also built to be one of the saf-
est cars on the road thanks not
only to features such as standard
ESP and four airbags but also a
laserwelded and galvanised body
structure which has one of the
highest torsional rigidity values in
the segment at 26,000 Nm/˚. (Continued on page 13)

This has already been recognised
by Euro NCAP and ANCAP, both
awarding the new car a top five-
star safety rating.
Summary
Beetle made its debut at Shang-
hai Motor Show in April 2011
Over 22.5 million Beetles have
been sold since the original model
was created in 1938, putting it
among the world’s top three most
successful cars of all time; over
one million of these were New
Beetles, of which over 8,800 were
sold in Australia
The 21st century Beetle is, like its
predecessor, front-wheel drive,
front engined and has three doors
and four seats
Created by a team led by Walter
de Silva (Group Design Chief) and
Klaus Bischoff (Volkswagen Brand
Head of Design), the latest Beetle
is substantially longer, wider and
lower than the outgoing car and
on a marginally longer wheelbase,
meaning it looks sportier, more
masculine and dynamic
New proportions and design break
with those of the 1998 version
with a longer bonnet and steeper
inclined windscreen moved back,
making the latest model more
akin to the 1938 original or the
Ragster concept shown in Detroit
in 1995
Dimensions are: length 4,278 mm
(+149 mm); width 1,808 mm
(+87); height 1,477 mm (-21);
wheelbase 2,524 mm (+8); while
track widths have also increased
by 71 mm to 1,578 mm at the
front and by 57 mm to 1,544 mm
at the rear
Cargo capacity has increased and
ranges from 310 litres to 905 li-
tres with split/folding rear bench
folded (previously 209/769)
On the road, new suspension con-
tributes to a more dynamic driv-
ing performance than in the pre-
vious model. A very lightweight
strut type set-up at the front is
completed by semi-independent
rear suspension
The Beetle is equipped with a
high level of features including
17” alloy wheels, multifunction
leather steering wheel, MDI
(Media Device Interface), Blue-
tooth and colour co-ordinated
dash and door panels; dual
zone climate control air condi-
tioning, parking sensors and
power windows.
Safety is a priority with twin
front and side/head airbags,
plus ABS and ESP all standard.
What’s more, the Beetle’s body
is largely laserwelded and gal-
vanised meaning it has one of
the best torsional rigidity values
in the segment at 26,000 Nm/˚.
Inside, the Beetle has an all new
design; the bud vase is gone; the
second glovebox integrated into
the facia with an upward folding
lid (familiar to those who know
the air-cooled version) is back.
Ergonomic and easy to read, all
dials and controls are within easy
reach and sight.
A range of optional items are
available including RNS/510 satel-
lite navigation system, panoramic
electric glass sunroof and Vienna
leather appointed upholstery
Two packages available for the
Beetle. Technology Package with
Bi-Xenons and LED driving lights,
keyless access, electronic exterior
mirrors, low tyre pressure indica-
tors and LED rear number plate
light; as well as the Sport Pack-
age with 18” Twister alloy wheels,
dark tinted windows (side and
rear), sports instruments on
dashboard, and steering wheel
gearshift paddles (for DSG)
The 21st century model continues
to be built at Volkswagen’s Puebla
plant in Mexico, alongside the Jet-
ta and Golf Wagon.
Production
The Beetle is produced at the
Volkswagen de México plant and
headquarters in Puebla – the cap-
ital of the federal state of the
same name, 120 km south-east
(Continued from page 12)

of Mexico City.
The plant occupies 3,000,000 m2
with about 480,000 m2 of build-
ing space. In January 2011, the
cornerstone was laid for a new
engine plant in Silao, in the cen-
tral-Mexican state of Guanajuato.
The Volkswagen facility in Puebla
is the biggest automobile factory
in Mexico. All the processes need-
ed for complete car production,
including the machining and as-
sembly of engine and axle parts
and the stamping of car body
parts take place here.
The history of Volkswagen in
Mexico began in 1954 with the
first imported Classic Beetle. The
company Volkswagen de México
was founded in 1964 as a 100 per
cent owned subsidiary of
Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft.
The first Beetle left the assembly
line in Puebla on 23 March, 1967.
On 31 July, 2003, the world’s last
Classic Beetle was produced in
Mexico. A limited edition of 3,000
special models was launched as
the worthy farewell for this histo-
ry-making car.
In four decades, 1,691,542 of
these cars were produced in Mexi-
co, contributing to a total of
21,529,464 ‘bugs’ sold worldwide
since 1946.
Volkswagen Commercial
Vehicles Now Includes the Caddy Maxi
Crewvan Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles
is pleased to announce an expan-
sion of the Caddy Van range, by
introducing a Caddy Maxi
Crewvan variant to its model
range. A perfect vehicle for carry-
ing crew while leaving a secure
and practical storage space for
tools or racking equipment.
To maximise the storage space
and versatility of the vehicle, the
three-seater rear bench splits and
folds forward to increase the load
capacity from 1.6m3 to 4.1m3
and can be removed completely
to achieve 4.1m3. The maximum
load length is 2.25m (with seats
removed) and payload is 709kg
(Manual).
Due to increased payload require-
ments for this variant, the Caddy
Maxi Crewvan has been built on a
16” wheels platform, featuring
16” steel wheels as standard
equipment.
As per Caddy Maxi Van, rear barn
doors are standard equipment for
this new variant, with a tailgate
available as a no-cost option.
The engine offering for the Caddy
Maxi Crewvan comprises of the
75kW 1.6-litre TDI engine with
250Nm of torque, coupled with
either a 5-speed manual or a 7-
speed DSG transmission. This
highly efficient engine achieves
excellent combined fuel consump-
tion of just 5.9 litres/100km
(CO2: 155g/km) for both the
manual and DSG versions.
The Caddy Maxi Crewvan is based
on the MY13 Caddy Maxi Van, but
receives the following additional
standard equipment:
3-seater bench (fold/tumble/
removable) as 2nd row of seats
Rigid side windows in sliding
doors
Drawers under front seats
Fabric seat cover "Timo"
Back rest release for front seats
Rubber floor in passenger/load
compartment

Volkswagen Commercial
Vehicles Intro-duces Caddy Maxi Van with
BlueMotion
Technology The most economical model in
the commercial vehicles range is
now the new Caddy Maxi Van
250TDI with BlueMotion Technol-
ogy. Equipped with an exceeding-
ly innovative high-tech package
which includes Start/Stop system
and battery regeneration mode,
the affordable Caddy Maxi Van
BlueMotion Technology is one of
the most fuel-efficient van in its
segment and is the first
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle
with BlueMotion Technology.
The combination of Stop/Start
system and battery regeneration
is the first of its kind in the local
compact van segment. Average
fuel consumption for the Caddy
Maxi Van with BlueMotion Tech-
nology is
5.2l/100km which
equates to a fuel
consumption im-
provement of
0.6l/100km com-
pared to the Caddy
Maxi Van TDI250
with 5-speed Manu-
al. CO2 emissions
have also been re-
duced significantly
to just 136g/km
resulting in a CO2
emissions reduction
of 16g/km.
The 1.6-TDI engine in the Caddy
Maxi Van 250TDI with BlueMotion
Technology produces 75kW of
power and develops a maximum
torque of 250 Newton metres
from just 1,500rpm. This frugal
and simultaneously both powerful
and comfortable powertrain ena-
bles fine driving performance
while maintaining minimal fuel
consumption.
The new Caddy Maxi Van 250TDI
with BlueMotion Technology
comes standard with a 5-speed
manual transmission and specifi-
cations are the same as on the
Caddy Maxi Van 250TDI.
The Stop/Start system in detail
The intuitive Stop/Start system
works in a very uncomplicated
way: the Caddy driver approach-
es a red light, slows to a stop,
shifts to neutral and takes their
foot off the clutch, immediately
turning off the engine.
The ‘Stop/Start’ indicator now
appears on the multi-function dis-
play. As soon as the traffic light
switches to green and the driver
puts their foot on the clutch, the
engine automatically starts, the
‘Stop/Start’ indicator goes out,
the driver puts the vehicle into
gear and drives on. There is noth-
ing else the driver has to do. The
Stop/Start system thus makes an
appreciable contribution toward
improved fuel economy.
Battery regeneration in detail
Regenerative braking helps the
vehicle to utilise energy expended
in driving in the best possible
way. Whenever the Caddy Maxi
Van with BlueMotion Technology
is coasting or braking, i.e. when-
ever the driver simply lifts his
foot off the accelerator or inten-
tionally brakes, the generator’s
voltage is increased and utilised
to significantly recharge the vehi-
cle’s battery.
Thanks to this generator control
and the fact that the battery is
thus always optimally charged,
the generator’s voltage can be
reduced, for example during ac-
celeration or when constantly
maintaining the desired speed.
This reduces engine load and thus
lowers fuel consumption. Special
software is needed for the energy
management system, and the
engine controller software needs
to be modified to implement re-
generative braking.
Pricing
The new and fuel efficient com-
pact van from Volkswagen Com-
mercial Vehicles is offered at a
competitive price of $27,990*.
Offered at the same price as the
outgoing Caddy Maxi Van 250TDI
5-speed Manual, Volkswagen’s
innovative BlueMotion Technology
comes at no extra cost for the
customers.
* Prices are manufacturer recom-
mended retail list prices only, for
the drive away price please con-
tact your local authorised
Volkswagen dealer.

Volkswagen
CC When presenting a product these
days, less is often more and so it
goes for Volkswagen in the CC.
Formally associated with the
Passat family, just like the previ-
ous model Jetta was virtually a
Golf sedan, the CC now stands
alone on the old Passat platform.
The only badging on the CC is
just CC, along with V6 4Motion
and the corporate logos front and
rear, with even those corporate
badges having a use. The rear
doubles as the reversing camera
as well as the boot opener, whist
the front housed the radar for the
adaptive cruise control.
The CC is offered in various forms
from 112 kw to 220kw, petrol,
diesel and an E85 variant. All are
4cyl except the one I had the use
of. It was the 3.6 litre V6 with
220kw under foot and linked to
the 4motion (VW’s all wheel
drive) that gets the CC off the
mark like Usain Bolt.
The CC is one of the most attrac-
tive cars on the road. It oozes
class and it has the features to
compliment that tag. With the
key in your pocket, you just ap-
proach the car, open the door (or
wave your foot under the boot to
open it to put the shopping in)
and start the engine via a push
button. Push another button to
take the hand brake off, put it
into drive on the 6speed DSG,
make use of the hill hold, then
put pedal to the metal and let it
do its thing. You could choose to
use the DSG box manually or al-
ternatively, bring out the boy rac-
er in you and use the paddles.
Last time I drove a CC, I thought
I would have nothing more to
look forward to driving. How
wrong I was. Front and rear seats
are heated, with the front now
vented. This helped when sitting
on those leather seats on those
hot Perth days.
The CC had many of the usual
nice Volkswagen bits, including
the choice of sports, normal, or
comfortable rides – even on grav-
el, the quiet interior, parking sen-
sors all round and a nice set of
18” rims shod with 235/40’s
which take it to 100kph in about
(Continued on page 17)
By Rod McSwain
March 2013 Via West Page 17
1953 - 2013...Volkswagen commemorates 60 years in Australia
6 secs and a governed 250kph –
apparently, as well as VW’s Opti-
cal Parking System – too easy.
The Sat nav even tells you what
speed zone you are in. You can
drop the back seats while loading
the boot with that bigger than ex-
pected load and hang your shop-
ping on hooks to stop it sliding
around the boot on your way
home.
The option that I was most im-
pressed with was the Driver Assist
Package. This is where the adap-
tive cruise control monitors mov-
ing traffic up ahead and will ad-
just the speed of the CC to that of
the vehicle ahead and will bring it
to a halt if the vehicle in front
stops. It will warn you if there is a
vehicle in your blind spot, but
most impressive is the ability for
the car to stay in the lane by
steering itself back to the centre if
you drift off line. The system will
be over ridden if you indicate. It
was a dream to drive on country
roads where it was in its element
sipping as little as 7.5l / 100km
Consumption is very acceptable
for the CC. It consumed 10.3
l/100klm over the 600 kms of
mixed driving.
Taller people need to be careful
entering the rear, but once in
there is plenty of room. My only
other criticism, as with some of
the other VWs, is the brushed
chrome surrounding the gear shift
which is so glary, that it reflects
like a mirror when the sun is out
and I had to either hold my hand
over it or cover it over to stop the
distraction. Else the CC is another
fine example of just how far
Volkswagen have come since the
Beetle of the 1950’s. ©2013

Passat
Alltrack I Picked up the Passat Alltrack
with my wife on a Friday
lunchtime unsure as what to ex-
pect, being a first timer at this
sort of thing. We were shown out
to the car and I was unable to
contain the grin on my face. It’s
a great looking car!! Dark metal-
lic grey, with stylish alloy wheels
and those clean Passat lines. It
was the top of the line 125kw, 2
litre turbo diesel 4MOTION
alltrack with the works: black
leather interior, glass roof and
electric everything.
Just sitting in it for the first time
you could feel the black leather
seats gripping around you, al-
most making you aware of what
you could expect. You can really
see and feel the quality of the
build of the car. The dash is sim-
ple but sophisticated, no knobs
and dials sticking out every-
where. Most of the operations
are carried out on the in dash
touch screen display; the radio
(which I will get to later), the re-
versing camera, all the climate
control settings, the heated seats
and the various multimedia set-
tings.
Luckily I had driven the standard
Passat 4motion in England on a
recent holiday, so I knew that
there was just a switch on the
console for the handbrake and
that I had to have the foot on the
brake to start the car, whilst
pushing the keyfob into the dash.
I set off on the journey home,
only 20k’s or so, and could imme-
diately feel how solid the car felt
on the road. I expected the sus-
pension to be a little soft due to
the ride height, but it felt pretty
much the same as the standard
Passat. You did however have
that slight feeling of height com-
pared to a standard model. The
only thing that did feel strange
was the apparent laziness of the
automatic gear changes though,
not slow, but just at low revs... a
bit sedate. That was until I real-
ised that it had a sport mode se-
lection on the gearbox, then eve-
rything changed. It really livened
up the acceleration and gear
changes on the car and it really
gave you a good feeling as you
pulled away at the lights or need-
ed to overtake. You also had the
option of changing gears using
the paddle shifters on the steer-
ing wheel, I did use these for a
while, but preferred the drive in
the sport mode.
It has the clever feature of cut-
ting the engine when you come
to a complete stop at junctions
and traffic lights etc. A fuel sav-
ing measure that would save
quite a bit in Perth with the num-
ber of traffic lights we have
around. It felt a bit strange at
first, I’m sure several people
were staring at me thinking that
I’ve stalled the car, but as soon
as you release the brake pedal it
starts up again and off you go.
We used the car for a week as
the family vehicle and it per-
formed faultlessly, there are five
of us and the space inside the car
was great. One of the favourite
things about the car for most of
my family was the almost full
length glass roof, the front sec-
tion sliding back over the rear. It
gave a great view of the sky from
the back seat as you were driving
along and also had a full length
shade that ran below the sunroof.
(Continued on page 23)
By Justin Bayley
March 2013 Via West Page 23
1953 - 2013...Volkswagen commemorates 60 years in Australia
Both the sunroof and the shade
were controlled electrically from
switches to the front of them and
could be put to any position de-
sired by the occupants. Great
fun for the whole family, my son
particularly enjoyed looking out
of the roof when we took a trip to
the beach.
The sound system ‘WOW’ I could-
n’t believe how good it was. Not
just the clarity of the sound itself,
but even more so the volume it
could attain whilst retaining the
great sound quality, it really blew
me away. We are a family of
music lovers and many an hour
was spent choosing the music to
be played via the integrated i-pod
connector set inside the glove
box area. It was without doubt
the favourite part of the car for
my 11 year old son. We didn’t
even get it close to full volume
and would never have a need to!!
It really was a pleasure to have
the opportunity to drive such a
great car for the week. I can see
how this would be a fantastic car
for a family who wanted the extra
ground clearance and capability
of a four wheel drive car. I don’t
think you would want to take it
for any serious off roading, but it
would be great for all those grav-
el roads out there and I am sure
would be an excellent tow car,
whilst retaining the luxurious
feeling of a quality built
Volkswagen.
The only thing I didn’t enjoy
about the experience was giving
it back at the end of the week...
It really made our normal people
mover feel like a giant slug on
the road!!
Thank you Volkswagen.

Ogier triumphs in Sweden – Volkswagen
claims maiden victory in the World Rally
Championship A milestone for Volkswagen in
motorsport: Sébastien Ogier and
Julien Ingrassia (F/F) have won
the Rally Sweden at the wheel of
the Polo R WRC. In doing so,
Volkswagen has already far ex-
ceeded its own expectations of
what is the team’s debut season
in the FIA World Rally Champion-
ship (WRC). In only its second
competitive outing, the 315-hp
World Rally Car from Wolfsburg
emerged triumphant on the Scan-
dinavian ice and snow against
strong opposition – including nine
-time world champion Sébastien
Loeb (Citroën).
Eleven best times from 22 special
stages – Ogier and Ingrassia led
the overall standings right from
the word go, and refused to be
shifted from the top spot until
they reached the finish on Sunday
afternoon. Ogier set the founda-
tion for the success in qualifica-
tion on Thursday, when he
clocked the fastest time to finish
seven places ahead of the multi-
ple world champion. Loeb eventu-
ally ended the rally 41.8 seconds
behind his fellow Frenchman. Jari
-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila
(FIN/FIN) finished fourth in the
second Polo R WRC to complete
an outstanding team result for
Volkswagen.
A special win: Sébastien
Ogier’s eighth victory in the
World Rally Championship
Sébastien Ogier
and
Volkswagen’s
win at the Rally
Sweden will take
a special place in
the history
books of the FIA
World Rally
Championship
(WRC): Ogier’s
eighth success is
only the second
by a central European at the Rally
Sweden since 1950. Up until now,
the event had been won almost
exclusively by Nordic drivers –
Sébastien Ogier joins multiple
world champion Sébastien Loeb
as only the second winner of the
“Sweden” to come from outside of
Sweden, Norway and Finland.
Loeb was the first to break the
Nordic countries’ stranglehold in
2004.
Ice, snow and cold – extreme
weather, unique conditions
The Rally Sweden is one of a kind
on the calendar of the FIA World
Rally Championship (WRC). It is
the only rally held exclusively on
ice and snow. The teams use spe-
cial Michelin “Sweden studs” and
the winter specs for the World
Rally Cars at the Rally Sweden, as
well as special Castrol oils for the
engine, gearbox and differentials.
The Polo R WRC was surprisingly
strong in the extraordinary condi-
tions in Sweden: in total, the car
picked up 28 top-three results

Power Stage turns the bal-
ance: Ogier takes over at the
top of the World Rally Cham-
pionship
Sébastien Ogier won the so-called
Power Stage, which is making its
first appearance this season, to
move ahead in the overall WRC
standings. Extra World Champi-
onship points are up for grabs for
the drivers finishing first, second
and third. Ogier now leads the
Drivers’ Championship, three
points ahead of Loeb.
The next round of the World Rally
Championship takes place from
7th to 10th March in Mexico, with
the rally centred around León.
Quotes, Day Three of the Rally
Sweden
Jari-Matti Latvala,
Volkswagen Polo R WRC #7
“I am delighted for the entire
Volkswagen team. To win a race
so early in a debut season is
something very
special. I would
have liked to fin-
ish on the podi-
um myself. That
was certainly
possible here at
the Rally Sweden
with the Polo R
WRC. However, I
must still adapt
my driving style
a bit. Huge com-
pliments go to
my team-mate
Sébastien Ogier, who showed just
what was possible. He was really
impressive all weekend. I will do
everything in my power to get on
a par with him at the forthcoming
rallies.”
Sébastien Ogier, Volkswagen
Polo R WRC #8
“That is an indescribable feeling!
We were screaming with joy in
the car. It is simply incredible to
claim the first victory for
Volkswagen and the team at only
our second rally. This is probably
the greatest moment of my ca-
reer. The Polo R WRC was perfect
the entire time. The guys did a
fantastic job of preparing the car.
So much can happen in Sweden.
The conditions in the snow are so
difficult – winning here, as only
the second central European and
ahead of the best rally driver of
all time, makes me enormously
proud. We had to give 100 per
cent, right down to the final day,
because Sébastien Loeb was real-
ly going for it right through to the
finish. I feared that he would
make up more time this morning,
particularly on the opening
‘Mitandersfors’ stage. However,
that was not the case. Now I am
just overjoyed.”
Jost Capito, Volkswagen Mo-
torsport Director
“This is a big day for Volkswagen
in motorsport. To win the second
round of the World Championship
under our own steam is a real
milestone. The Rally Sweden is
one of a kind. The Polo R WRC
worked perfectly in these condi-
tions, and Sébastien Ogier took
full advantage. He was in a class
of his own here. However, Jari-
Matti Latvala also performed well.
Within the team, all the cogs fit
into place perfectly. Today I am
just very proud of the guys.”
And then there was ...
... Sébastien Ogier’s car engineer
Gerard Jan de Jongh. The Dutch-
man has waited seven years for
his first WRC victory as the engi-
neer responsible for the car. To-
day that dream came true. How-
ever, de Jongh will not be up all
night partying – he has been
down with a bad dose of the flu
since Sébastien Ogier and Julien
Ingrassia crossed the finish line.

Access is from Lord Street, Beech-boro Road North and Marshall Road via Dulwich Road. We expect to have the usual spot and I have asked for room for 30 cars, so let's make this a big one.
The gates will open at 6.30 a.m. on
Sunday
You must have a free ticket to enter. They will become available at a later date.
The VW Club contact will be Rich-
ard Hines phone: (08) 9342 8703.

Once in you must remain in. Other-wise park in the public car park. No noise after 10 pm. No tents erected before 6 pm. Everything packed away
by 7.30 am on Sunday. Drive at walk-ing pace only.

1953 - 2013...Volkswagen commemorates 60 years in Australia
Volkswagen prepares to
build the world's most fuel efficient
production car. Article provided by Don Yates
Back in 2009, before the Nissan
Leaf and Chevy Volt were ready
for market, the world heard loud,
overinflated claims of "367" and
"230" mpg ratings. Talk is cheap,
and actual EPA testing sent those
ratings rocketing right back down
to earth at 99 mpg-e and 60
mpg, respectively. Volkswagen is
the latest to get in on the 200+
mpg game, claiming its XL1 will
be capable of 261 mpg (European
cycle). Thanks to a radical ap-
proach that slashes weight, opti-
mizes aerodynamics and wrings
every last drop of fuel,
Volkswagen may actually make
good on its claims – or at least
get close.
Volkswagen first showed the XL1,
an evolution of the 2009 L1 and
original 2002 1-liter bubble, in
2011. While it looked like a fanci-
ful green concept designed to
make headlines and then disap-
pear into the archives,
Volkswagen was clear that it
planned to eventually build it and
set a date of 2013. Now, the time
is here, and Volkswagen is ready-
ing the production version for
next month's Geneva Motor
Show.
Volkswagen calls the XL1 the
most aerodynamic production car
ever and uses a 0.19 drag coeffi-
cient to prove it. For comparison,
the carefully aero-optimized, cost
-is-not-an-issue McLaren P1's
drag coefficient is 0.34. Aerody-
namic measures include a nar-
rowed rear-end, wheel covers
over the rear wheels, and rear-
view side cameras in place of mir-
rors. It doesn't exude convention-
al auto aesthetics, but if you're
the type that appreciates function
over form, it's an absolutely gor-
geous design.
The second pillar of the XL1's
lofty fuel economy is weight sav-
ings. Thanks to a build that's
more than 20 percent carbon fi-
ber-reinforced plastic (CFRP), in-
cluding the monocoque structure
and body panels, along with a
thin-glass windshield, polycar-
bonate side windows, and other
measures, the XL1 barely twitch-
es the scale needle to 1,753
pounds (795 kg). It measures
153.1 inches long, 65.6 inches
wide, and 45.4 inches high (3,888
x 1,665 x 1,153 mm), which is
comparable to the Polo's width
and length, but more than 10
inches (254 mm) shorter.
With support from that gaunt
build and slippery aerodynamics,
Volkswagen gets away with pow-
ering the XL1 with a meek 47-hp
800cc two-cylinder TDI engine,
27-hp electric motor and lithium-
ion battery. That small, rear-

battery, weighs 500 pounds (227
kg), less than the Nissan Leaf's
660-pound (300-kg) battery and
only 100 pounds (45 kg) more
than the Chevy Volt's battery.
Armed with a seven-speed dual-
clutch gearbox (DSG), the plug-in
hybrid powertrain provides up to
32 miles (50 km) of all-electric
driving. In electric mode, the en-
gine is decoupled from the
drivetrain, allowing the electric
motor to act alone. Volkswagen
says that the restarting of the
engine is a smooth, joltless pro-
cess, whereby the e-motor's rotor
speeds up, couples with the en-
gine's clutch and brings it up to
speed. Unlike in other plug-in hy-
brids, where a com-
paratively large
four-cylinder
is tasked
with tak-
ing
over,
the
XL1's
tiny two
-cylinder
turbodiesel
continues to
provide ultra-
frugal commuting
when handed the
reigns.
The XL1 is cushioned by double
wishbone suspension in the front
and a semi-trailing link suspen-
sion in the rear. Lightweight run-
ning gear materials include alu-
minum suspension components,
magnesium wheels and ceramic
brake discs. The
XL1 also rolls on
Michelin low roll-
ing resistance
tires.
Along with the
impressive 0.9
liter/100 km (261
mpg) fuel efficien-
cy figures – which
make it the "1
liter car" it was
aiming for –
Volkswagen says
the car can maintain a constant
cruising speed of 62 mph (100
km/h) using just 8.4 hp/6.2 kW
and, in all-electric mode, can
travel 1 kilometer (0.62 mile) on
just 0.1 kWh of elec-
tricity.
The
company says
the vehicle can accelerate from 0-
62 mph (100 km/h) in 12.7 sec-
onds, on the way to a top speed
of 99 mph (160 km/h). When
needed for ac-
celeration, the
electric motor
can kick in to
assist the diesel
engine.
The XL1 puffs
out just 21 g/
km of C02 with
exhaust gas
recirculation, an
oxidation cata-
lytic converter
and a diesel
particulate filter
used to keep exhaust emissions
down. VW has also worked to op-
timize the efficiency of the cool-
ing system.
The driver takes the wheel of the
XL1 by entering through one of
two winged, double-hinged doors
that swing up and slightly
forward. Inside,
Volkswagen re-
placed the 1+1
layout of the
L1 proto-
type with
slightly
offset
side-by-
side
seating.
Volkswagen
plans to build
each XL1 with a
new "handcrafting-like"
process at its Osnabrück, Germa-
ny, facility. Many of the major
components will be sourced from
other VW plants and external
manufacturers and put together
using a very specific nine-stage
process. With that in mind, not to
mention the composites and tech-
nologically advanced design, we
expect that the XL1 will be the
toy of trendy celebrities and busi-
ness executives for the foreseea-
ble future. Volkswagen has yet to
confirm pricing but more details
should be forthcoming from Ge-
neva.

1953 - 2013...Volkswagen commemorates 60 years in Australia
Hi
This isn’t a story, but I had to share our New Year
experience in Bangkok.
My wife and I arrived in Bangkok on New Year’s
Eve last week and we were looking for something
to do as all the restaurants in the hotel were
booked out. The Concierge at our hotel arranged
dinner for us at a local restaurant and then recom-
mended we take a walk down a street called Su-
khumvit No 11 to bring in the New Year. The street
has heaps of bars, clubs, etc and while checking
the street out we came across some modified Kom-
bis that have been converted into mobile street
bars.
You can buy beer, wine, spirits and even cocktails
and then you can sit down at the bar (Which is part
of the vehicle) or sit at one of the tables which they
bring with them. The Kombis are fitted out with
flashing lights and disco balls and they play loud
party music.
My wife and I only stayed for one drink but had a
great time I would be keen to convert our T2 Kom-
bi into a mobile bar but I think the likelihood of
getting a liquor licence in Perth is just about zero.
Cheers Tom Reilly
