Happy Birthday for December and January...
December 2013 - January 2014 Via West Page 9
Volkswagen Club of Western Australia (Inc) 1955 - 2015...ideas for 60th Anniversary in Twenty15
Hi...
What a great month December is…..it’s the end of the year so people seem to be extra
friendly with the Christmas spirit in the air, there’s time to relax , the sun comes out etc etc, from a
Volkswagen Club members point of view the pressure is now off to finish the car with the Day of the
Volkswagen behind us. We can now look forward to some organised cruises, camp outs and meets.
Next years calendar is nearly full, with an event in almost every month already in the planning stages.
Some of this years more successful and favourite ones will remain (just like Day of the Volkswagen) on
the calendar each year at the same time.
I would like to thank everyone that attended the DoVW for their great attitude and support. The new
club tent performed and looked awesome. With the temperature at a perfect heat and some clouds
about made for a beautiful day next to the river, also with the time slot shifted earlier by an hour too
helped with the numbers through the gate - for the record we had 146 in! It was
very pleasing to see so many new vehicles and faces.
A big thanks from everyone goes to all the people behind the scenes and present
on the day that put this event together. With many more hands on board really
helped share the work load this year.
If you have an air-cooled engine – this is a good time to change your oil and check
your fuel lines with all this heat about. For those in a water-cooled car, enjoy your
air-conditioning!
All be safe over the holiday period. All the best and Happy Year! Januarys
“Alfreds” in Guildford falls on January the 1st so if you don’t have a sore head I’ll
see you there

That was then…
On the 7th July this year the club
went on a cruise to watch the
Formula Vees at Barbagallo Race-
way.
Thanks to Ross, the prize for win-
ning the “public vote” for best VW
on show on the day was a drive in
the current State Champion 1600
Formula Vee at an upcoming fam-
ily day. Full tilt, in anger, at
180kph.
And the winner was...
Darryl and Donna Williams
And this is now...
Hi all!!
Well unfortunately due to a rib
injury from working on my bus I
was unable to take the drive in
the Formula Vee.
However, all was not lost and my
daughter Amanda took up the
challenge.
A big thank you to Ross and Dave
for this opportunity ... we had a
fun afternoon and no one more
than Amanda who drove not one
but three cars.
Here are some pics from the day!

Hi Folks,
Summer is here and hopefully so
has the prospect of lots of clear
days for some vee dub fun!
Its time to clean off the cobwebs
and get to enjoy your VW around
the colourful South West and all
that it has to offer.
Some information on the VW
events in the South West in the
future follows...
Meelup cruise
and BBQ Busselton VW gathering is on eve-
ry second Sunday of the month,
the next meet is on the 12th
January.
For the January South West VW
gathering we have arranged to
meet at the usual place (see ad-
vert below) at 11am and then de-
part at 11:30am for a cruise to
Meelup beach for a BBQ.
There are public bbqs and facilities
at Meelup so bring along your own
food to cook up or have a picnic.
The cruise is around 40km and
should take roughly 40 minutes
along Bussell Highway, straight
onto Caves Road turning past
Dunsborough.
Meelup is simply a world class
beach and a great place to park
some VW's and take in the view
and the beach.
If you are interested, just show up
or if you want more details give
me a call or text me on...

cruise will be organised up to the
Old Coast Road Brewery.
From the Brewery, all will head
south to Busselton for an over-
night stay and to attend the VW
gathering on the Sunday.

1st, 2nd & 3th November
The second Vee Dubs @ Bussel-
ton Drive-In weekend was again
a great success. The format was
much the same as last year with
a few tweaks. This year groups of
people cruised down from Perth,
up from the South West and be-
yond on the Friday for a full three
day event.
So many Vee Dubs parked and
set up together in the caravan
park was a sight to behold. The
new Club Marque proved its
worth as a great central meeting
place and is sure to be well used
at other events. There was also a
fair bit of sneezing from all the
peppermint tree blossom blown
around too!
Saturday morning started with a
50th birthday presentation that
drew everyone in. Around
12:30pm a cruise started from
outside the
caravan park
taking in the
Busselton
Main street
with stops at
Meelup Beach
and Canal
Rocks via
Dunsborough
and Caves
Road. The
turnout was impressive and the
weather was perfect. Some high-
lights of the cruise included a
wedding party arriving at Canal
Rocks that couldn’t resist taking

The number of cars and people
tightly set up at the Drive-in after
the cruise was great to see. Eve-
ryone had heaps of fun catching
up, eating, laughing, and check-
ing out the cars before the mov-
ies started.
Like last year a fantastic VW
themed gate prize made especial-
ly for the event went to a teenag-
er, a young lady in a onesie. Af-
ter a busy day some probably
struggled to stay awake to watch
the movies.
A show and shine Sunday morn-
ing at Signal Park at the Bussel-
ton beachfront again saw a great
turnout. The Club Marque was
again a focal point that also
helped sell quite a lot of Club
merchandise. The cars drew
quite a crowd, helped by the fact
we shared the park with the
Busselton Markets.
Thanks to everyone who came
along and helped to make the
weekend so much fun.
Cheers Kim

The Golf's success story
enters the seventh gen-
eration as the car con-
tinues to inspire both
customers and the spe-
cialist media.
The Golf has been honoured with
two dozen prestigious awards
over the past twelve months,
most notably European "Car of
the Year" and "World Car of the
Year 2013". The new Golf also
recently beat the competition in
Japan, becoming the first import-
ed car in the award’s 34-year his-
tory to claim the accolade and be
named "Car of the Year
2013/2014 Japan" with a score
that was streaks ahead of the
field.
Other awards include the Scottish
“Car of the Year 2013", the
"Golden Steering Wheel 2013",
the "Auto Trophy", "Auto der
Vernunft" (Car of Reason) and
"Best cars of 2013". Prof. Dr.
Martin Winterkorn, CEO of
Volkswagen AG, commented:
"The Golf will remain the most
important model and a powerful
engine for the Volkswagen
brand."
The 500,000th latest-generation
Golf will be delivered in a few
days' time just one year after the
car was launched. These impres-
sive sales figures exclude key
countries such as China and the
United States, where the best-
seller is yet to make its debut.
Moreover, an important deriva-
tive in the Golf family is waiting
in the wings: the new Golf wagon
will arrive on Australian shores
early next year. "We are delight-
ed the Golf has got off to such a
brilliant start and is enjoying
such a positive reception from
customers. That is first and fore-
most due to a committed team.
Our people very definitely went
the extra mile for the Golf and
have done a great job," Winter-
korn added.
For years now, the Golf has been
the best-selling car in Europe,
enjoying this status in several
individual countries and taking
pole position, for example, in Bel-
gium, Finland, Ireland, Croatia,
Luxemburg, Norway, Austria,
Switzerland and, of course, its
home market of Germany.
The first generation of the
Volkswagen Golf went on display
at dealers in May 1974 as the
successor to the legendary Beetle
and has continued its predeces-
sor's success story for almost 40
years. The Golf has lent its name
to an entire vehicle class and has
always been available in a range
of variants. From the ultra-
economical Golf TDI BlueMotion
to the sporty GTI, from the two-
door cabriolet to the versatile
wagon, Volkswagen has exactly
the right Golf to suit every taste.
Customers are certainly con-
vinced: Volkswagen celebrated
the 30 millionth Golf in June
2013.

Money
Magazine’s “Best-value small car”
Volkswagen has again triumphed
in Money Magazine’s annual “Best
of the best” awards with the all-
new seventh generation Golf
claiming the title of “Best-value
small car”. The winning Golf vari-
ant, the entry-level 90TSI, leads
the way in the hugely popular
small car segment.
As well as gaining points in the
value-for-money and cost-of-
ownership analysis, the judges
said there was another factor
that helps weight the criteria to-
wards best-car status, “the fun-

to-drive component” or, driving
experience.
“When you weigh it up against
Money’s best-car methodology,
including an incredibly strong
(67%) resale value over three
years, then add our subjective fit
-and-finish and fun-to-drive rat-
ing, it’s easy to see why the 1.4-
litre turbo 90TSI is the big-value
small car” commented Money
Magazine.
Now in its 13th year, Money Mag-
azine’s “Best of the Best 2014”
Awards recognise Australia’s best
financial products, services and
investments. Expert research
partners select the 102 gold win-
ners from tens of thousands of

2013 Carsguide Car of the
Year’: In a year already filled
with accolades, Volkswagen’s
seventh generation Golf has now
been honored as ‘2013 Carsguide
Car of the Year’, once again con-
firming the Golf as the bench-
mark in the small car segment
with Australian motoring experts.
The all-new Golf was awarded
‘World Car of the Year 2013’ ear-
lier this year and continues its
claim to fame in Australia with a
winning formula of accessible
performance and efficiency. It
went on sale in Australia in April
2013 and has continued to re-
ceive stellar reviews since.
John White, Volkswagen Group
Australia’s Managing Director,
commented on the significance of
this award. “We are delighted
and proud to receive the
Carsguide Car of the Year Award
for the Golf. This is the second
time the Golf has received the
award and with such a competi-
tive market it is a great pleasure
to be recognised for delivering
such an exceptional car.”
“With over 30 million sales and
much critical acclaim, the Golf
continues to deliver a unique
combination of advanced technol-
ogy, quality, refinement and af-
fordability.”
“To build a new Golf that delivers
more for our customers without
demanding more from them is a
remarkable testament to the
team of designers, engineers and
craftsman who created it.”
Carsguide editor, Paul Pottinger,
says Carsguide selects the entry
level or the most popular variant
by which to judge the range, se-
lecting the 90TSI Comfortline to
represent the Golf range.
Pottinger commented: “Never
has a small car so seamlessly
combined the abilities of a subur-
ban family vehicle and a long-
distance tourer. Its 1.4-litre turbo
petrol engine is as amiable and
economical or as spirited and re-
sponsive as you could want in a
road car.”
“It’s a hallmark of the Mark VII
Golf, however, that we could
have selected any variant from
entry level to GTI and the result
would have been no different.
The base car is plainly superior to
the small car pack. At nearly
$44,000 the top-spec GTI is a
bargain.”
The nation-wide judging panel on
the ‘2013 Carsguide Car of the
Year’ Awards consists of 10 expe-
rienced and highly regarded edi-
tors and journalists who evaluat-
ed the best new car releases of
2013 resulting in one overall win-
ner, the Golf.

Amarok
named 2014
Pick-Up of the Year Amarok scoops ‘Best Pick-Up
of the Year’ award from spe-
cialist 4x4 title
Amarok praised for its practi-
cality, efficiency and value for
money
Volkswagen’s highly-acclaimed
Amarok has scooped the prestig-
ious ‘Pick-up of the Year’ title
from UK specialist off-road publi-
cation, 4x4 Magazine.
Seven utes underwent intensive
testing by 4x4 Magazine, each
judged on their off-road ability,
performance on the road and val-
ue for money. The utes were also
tested as a working vehicle in-
cluding comparing towing capaci-
ty and engine capability, result-
ing with Amarok as the overall
winner.
According to 4x4 Magazine, the
multi award-winning Amarok was
praised for its 4-wheel-drive
4MOTION technology which gives
the driver maximum control on
any surface and features Elec-
tronic Stabilisation Programme,
Electronic Differential Lock, on
and off road Anti-lock Braking
System and Anti-Slip Regulation,
all as standard. The vehicle’s
unique blend of practicality and
versatility both on and off-road
meant it was ranked ahead of all
other challengers.
The Amarok’s im-
pressive 2.0-litre TDI420 turbo
diesel engine and eight-speed
automatic gearbox were also
highlighted as offering superior
drive, road response and drivea-
bility.
Nigel Fryatt, Editor, 4x4 Maga-
zine commented: "The range of
pick-ups available in the UK mar-
ket is extensive. All the vehicles
we tested were very similar in
terms of being diesel-powered,
double cab vehicles, with stand-
ard load beds. However, when it
came to the Volkswagen Amarok
it was obvious that it was a clear
winner.
“The Amarok has the best engine
of the group, both in terms of on-
road response, and off-road abil-
ity. When coupled to the excel-
lent eight speed automatic gear-
box there could only be one win-
ner."

China Classic Volkswagen cars on
the road between Beijing and
Shanghai with great success
An audience of millions for
the 2013 running of the big-
gest Chinese classic car rally,
from Beijing to Shanghai.
Jochem Heizmann, CEO
Volkswagen Group China, and
racing legend Jacky Ickx piloted a
Volkswagen 1302 TDE Beetle and
a Scirocco I.
Several million Chinese followed
the week-long marathon drive of
around 30 classic cars from Bei-
jing to Shanghai with unbridled
enthusiasm. Volkswagen Classic
sent two classic cars clear across
the Middle Kingdom. The vehicles
from the factory collection were
driven by Jochem Heizmann,
Member of the Board of
Volkswagen AG with responsibil-
ity for ‘China' as well as President
and CEO of Volkswagen Group
China, and motor racing legend
Jacky Ickx.
Over 1,600 kilometres clear
through China – a true adventure
for over 30 auto classics that
took part in the Classic Cars
Challenge China ("4C"). After the
start on 12 October in the capital
city Beijing, the first stage led to
Tianjin, one of the most im-
portant seaports in the People's
Republic. Over Qingdao, the drive
continued southwards along the
Yellow Sea. Prior to the final
stage, the cars passed the old
capital city of Nanjing before
reaching the final destination in
the booming economic metropolis
of Shanghai on 18 October.

Its been an adventure long over due...Jean, Marianne my daughter
and I decided to go to Europe for a holiday. I was not fussed were
we go, but I did want to at least go to Germany so I can go to the
VW Wolfsburg factory.
Well when I got there I was like a kid in a lolly shop...I wanted
to go everywhere at the same time.
I went to the 2 Towers were all the cars are kept and one of the car
ramps was made to carry people so when I went up it was awesome
to see how the cars are stacked. They had so many other makes
and models so I got to see military vehicles, Lamborghini, Skoda,
Audi
Seat and Porsche, they also had
old American and British cars.
One of the amazing trips was go-
ing in the factory in a 2 seater
wide bus that carries around 30
people.
In August this year they made 40
million Golf and the last on the
line they sprayed it white and
then got every one in the factory
to sign it.
I was not allowed to take photos
in the factory. When I was going
around 2 cars were being put to-
gether...the Passat.
They have 17 semitrailers a day
bringing parts from other factories
around Germany. I was told that
they make 3500 vehicles a week.
I could not believe it but when the
bus was going around it was less
then 10 minutes that the 2
cars got put together.
They have a lot of people working
in the factory but most of the
parts were put together by ma-
chine, the operators made sure
the machine did not break down.
Some of the workers use their
push bikes to get to there work
station, that’s how big the factory
is.
Wolfsburg factory not only makes
money from there manufacture of
Volkswagen they Also supplies
part of Germany with electricity.
Here are some photos of the place
and vehicles...see opposite page.

PS, bridged the gap to current
models during their deployment
in the "4C" rally. It's true: the
Volkswagen Beetle and the Sci-
rocco R are real favourites with
the Chinese – and they flanked
their historic forebears on the
streets of the modern megacities.
That ever more Chinese succumb
to the fascination of classic and
modern sports cars is proven by
the latest sales figures.
China has now become the sec-
ond home market for Volkswagen
Group: After 2.8 million vehicles
in 2012, Volkswagen Group,
teaming up with its two joint
ventures Shanghai Volkswagen
(SVW) and FAW Volkswagen, de-
livered around 2.1 million vehi-
cles to customers in China
(including Hong Kong) in the first
eight months of this year. This is
another jump of around 18 per-
cent, while the market in general
has added just under 16 percent.
The long-standing experience of
Volkswagen in the Middle King-
dom, if nothing else, has made
this success possible: The brand
can look back on 30 years of suc-
cessful engagement in China and
is the current market leader in
the group of companies with a
share of over 20 percent.
In order to maintain this position,
both joint ventures will invest
another 9.8 billion euros in the
development of environmentally
compatible products as well as
the establishment of sustainable
production capacities from 2013
to 2015. "At this time, we could
actually sell more vehicles if we
had greater capacities," is how
Jochem Heizmann defines the
current situation.
Classic cars are also up and com-
ing in China. The participants in
the "4C" rally were definitely en-
thusiastic about the public reac-
tion. Winner of the rally was a
Volkswagen Scirocco I from the
factory collection. Racing legend
Jacky Ickx was ecstatic about
the country and its people upon
his arrival at the final destination
on the shores of the Yellow Sea:
"It's a fabulous adventure to get
to experience a classic car like
the Beetle and to be in close
contact with such a wonderful
country like China at the same
time. This is the kind of experi-
ence I wish everybody could

will be held, an especially chal-lenging British winter rally cov-ering a distance of 2,400 kilome-tres. For the first time, a car from Volkswagen Classic is among the 66 racing vehicles: a courageous ladies team will
tackle the three-day rough-and-tumble endurance rally in a
Volkswagen Iltis.
The “Le Jog” winter rally has been staged in the United Kingdom
since 1993. “The toughest in Eu-
rope,” as the organiser says him-self. The challenge is to drive the distance from Land’s End in the farthest south-west corner of Corn-
wall clear to John O’Groats in the northernmost corner of Scotland within three days. The demanding route runs straight over very bumpy byroads and through
streams, which means – given the extremely short passage times as well as a thoroughly strenuous
nocturnal stage – that the drivers
and their vehicles will be tested fully by the automotive ordeal they face. The whole route is garnished with more than 50 special regulari-ty tests full of navigational dodges.
66 teams will be competing there from the 7th to 10th December. In 2013 for the first time, a ladies team with a vehicle from the collec-tion of Volkswagen Classic is com-
peting in the 2,400-kilometre tour – a “Paris-Dakar” Volkswagen Iltis, just like the one that Freddy Graf Kottulinsky/ Gerhard Löffelmann drove to victory in that legendary desert rally in 1980. Steffi Edelhoff and Sandra Wukovich, who have already toured the world in a VW
Amarok, are racing in the “Le Jog” for a good cause: jointly with the
“be your own hero e.V.”, a regis-tered non-profit organization, they campaign for the autonomy and self-reliance of girls and young women.
The four-wheel drive Iltis (Type 183) is exactly the right vehicle for
such a tough rally – just under 10,000 of them were produced by Volkswagen/Audi. The technology of the spartan vehicle formed the basis for the later Quattro models by Audi. Unlike the production ver-sion, the race car features a rein-

forced chassis, underbody protec-tion, a front safety guard, auxiliary lamps, roll-over protection bar, only two sports bucket seats as well as a big 90-litre fuel tank. The power of the off roader is about 90 PS.

Shanghai-
Volkswagen 10 millionth
VW in China • Volkswagen production in China
started 30 years ago
Volkswagen celebrated the pro-
duction of the 10 millionth vehicle
by Shanghai-Volkswagen, a joint
venture of Volkswagen and SAIC
Motor Corporation Ltd in Novem-
ber 2013. When the milestone
vehicle, a Volkswagen Tiguan,
rolled off the production line, the
event was witnessed by Prof. Dr.
Jochem Heizmann, Member of the
Board of Management of
Volkswagen AG and President and
CEO of Volkswagen Group China,
together with government repre-
sentatives and managers from
Shanghai-Volkswagen and SAIC.
“This milestone is a sign of the
tremendous enthusiasm with
which millions of customers in
China have welcomed vehicles
and services from the
Volkswagen Group over the
course of our successful partner-
ship,” said Prof. Dr. Heizmann in
Shanghai. “Volkswagen and SAIC
Motor established Shanghai-
Volkswagen more than 30 years
ago and have performed genuine-
ly pioneering work in the Chinese
automobile industry.”
Volkswagen produced its first ve-
hicle in Shanghai, a Volkswagen
Santana, in April 1983. With
more than 4,2 million units pro-
duced, the Santana is a promi-
nent feature on the roads of Chi-
na to this day. You could say that
Volkswagen provided China with
wheels. At the same time, the
Group and its joint ventures have
become the development motor
of the Chinese automobile indus-
try – through extensive invest-
ments in the localization of prod-
ucts and production as well as
through the training of skilled
employees. Shanghai-Volkswagen
already established its own devel-
opment department in 1990 and
commissioned a test facility in
1997 and its own design centre in
2003. In 2006, the joint venture
started to produce models of the
ŠKODA brand.
Nowadays, the Volkswagen Group
and its joint ventures – Shanghai
-Volkswagen and FAW-
Volkswagen – have more than
75,000 employees in China.
Shanghai-Volkswagen has also
introduced the innovative dual
vocational training model, which
combines theoretical and practi-
cal training for new employees.
For seven years in succession,
Shanghai-Volkswagen was named
“Top employer in China”.
The joint venture Shanghai-
Volkswagen currently operates
vehicle plants in Anting, Nanjing,
Ningbo and Yizheng, Jiangsu
province. In addition, production
at the plant in Urumqi, Xinjiang
region, commenced a few month
ago. A further plant in Changsha,
south central China, is scheduled
for completion in 2015.
China is now the largest sales
market of the Volkswagen Group.
In 2012, the Group, together with
its joint ventures Shanghai-
Volkswagen and FAW-
Volkswagen, delivered 2.81 mil-
lion vehicles to customers in Chi-
na. In the first nine months of
this year, sales grew by 18 per-
cent
compared with the corresponding
period of the previous year,
reaching about 2.36 million vehi-
cles. As of September 2013,
Volkswagen Group China has a
market share of 20.9 percent in
the Greater China region
(including Hong Kong).
