1 – Husband and Wife and Children

The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” (Genesis 2:18)

The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. (Genesis 2:23-24)

For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, so that the LORD will bring about for Abraham what He has promised him. (Genesis 18:19)

Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them. (Deuteronomy 4:9)

Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from Him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. (Psalm 127:3-5)

Blessed are all who fear the LORD, who walk in His ways. You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your sons will be like olive shoots around your table. Thus is the man blessed who fears the LORD. (Psalm 128:1-4)

Drink water from your own cistern, running water from your own well. Should your springs overflow in the streets, your streams of water in the public squares? Let them be yours alone, never to be shared with strangers. May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth. A loving doe, a graceful deer – may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be captivated by her love. (Proverbs 5:15-19)

A kindhearted woman gains respect. (Proverbs 11:16)

A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown, but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones. (Proverbs 12:4)

The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down. (Proverbs 14:1)

Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children. (Proverbs 17:6)

A foolish son is his father’s ruin, and a quarrelsome wife is like a constant dripping. (Proverbs 19:13)

Houses and wealth are inherited from parents, but a prudent wife is from the LORD. (Proverbs 19:14)

Better to live in a desert than with a quarrelsome and ill-tempered wife. (Proverbs 21:19)

A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands. She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar. She gets up while it is still dark; she provides food for her family and portions for her servant girls. She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks. She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night. In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers. She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy. When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet; she makes coverings for her bed; she is clothes in fine linen and purple. Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land. She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes. She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” (Proverbs 31:10-29)

Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate. (Proverbs 31:30-31)

Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun – all your meaningless days. For this is your lot in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun. (Ecclesiastes 9:9)

Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest is my lover among the young men. I delight to sit in his shade, and his fruit is sweet to my taste. He has taken me to the banquet hall, and his banner over me is love. (Song of Songs 2:3-4)

How delightful is your love, my sister, my bride! How much more pleasing is your love than wine, and the fragrance of your perfume than any spice! Your lips drop sweetness as the honeycomb, my bride; milk and honey are under your tongue. The fragrance of your garments is like that of Lebanon. You are a garden locked up, my sister, my bride; you are a spring enclosed, a sealed fountain. (Song of Songs 4:10-12)



Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot wash it away. If one were to give all the wealth of his house for love, it would be utterly scorned. (Song of Songs 8:7)

Fathers tell their children about your faithfulness. (Isaiah 38:19)

Another thing you do: You flood the LORD’s altar with tears. You weep and wail because He no longer pays attention to your offerings or accepts them with pleasure from your hands. You ask, “Why?” it is because the LORD is acting as the witness between you and the wife of your youth, because you have broken faith with her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant. Has not the LORD made them one? In flesh and spirit they are His. And why one? Because He was seeking godly offspring. So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith with the wife of your youth. (Malachi 2:13-15)

“I hate divorce,” says the LORD God of Israel, “and I hate a man’s covering himself with violence as well as with his garment,” says the LORD Almighty. So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith. (Malachi 2:16)

He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse. (Malachi 4:6)

“Have you not read,” He replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.” (Matthew 19:4-6)

I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery. (Matthew 19:9)

Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery. (Mark 10:11-12)

But since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband. The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife’s body does not belong to her alone but also to her husband. In the same way, the husband’s body does not belong to him alone but also to his wife. Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. (1Corinthians 7:2-5) Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I am. But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion. To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband. But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife. (1Corinthians 7:8-11)



If any brother has a wife who is not a believer and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her. And if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him. For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife has been sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy. But if the unbeliever leaves, let him do so. A believing man or woman is not bound in such circumstances; God has called us to live in peace. How do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or, how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife? (1Corinthians 7:12-16)

A woman is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes, but he must belong to the Lord. In my judgment, she is happier if she stays as she is – and I think that I too have the Spirit of God. (1Corinthians 7:39-40)

The woman is the glory of man. (1Corinthians 11:7)

In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God. (1Corinthians 11:11-12)

Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.” (2 Corinthians 6:14-16)

Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, His body, of which He is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. (Ephesians 5:22-24)

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to Himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church. (Ephesians 5:25-29)

“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This is a profound mystery – but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband. (Ephesians 5:31-33)

Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. (Ephesians 6:4)



Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them. Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged. (Colossians 3:18-21)

I want men everywhere to lift up holy hands in prayer, without anger or disputing. I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God. A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. (1Timothy 2:8-11)

He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect. (1Timothy 3:4)

If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. (1Timothy 5:8)

No widow may be put on the list of widows unless she is over sixty, has been faithful to her husband, and is well known for her good deeds, such as bringing up children, showing hospitality, washing the feet of the saints, helping those in trouble and devoting herself to all kinds of good deeds. (1Timothy 5:9-10)

If any woman who is a believer has widows in her family, she should help them and not let the church be burdened with them, so that the church can help those widows who are really in need. (1Timothy 5:16)

Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance. Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God. Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. (Titus 2:2-6)

Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. (Hebrews 13:4)

Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful. They were submissive to their own husbands. (1Peter 3:1-5)



Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers. (1Peter 3:7)

2 – Honoring Your Father and Mother

Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. (Exodus 20:12)

Each of you must respect his mother and father. (Leviticus 19:3)

If anyone curses his father or mother, he must be put to death. He has cursed his father or his mother, and his blood will be on his own head. (Leviticus 20:9)

Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the LORD your God is giving you. (Deuteronomy 5:16)

Cursed is the man who dishonor his father or his mother. (Deuteronomy 27:16)

Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck. (Proverbs 1:8-9)

My son, keep your father’s commands and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. Bind them upon your heart forever; fasten them around your neck. When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you. When you awake, they will speak to you. (Proverbs 6:20-22)

A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son grief to his mother. (Proverbs 10:1)

A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, but a mocker does not listen to rebuke. (Proverbs 13:1)

A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish man despises his mother. (Proverbs 15:20)

Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children. (Proverbs 17:6)

A foolish son brings grief to his father and bitterness to the one who bore him. (Proverbs 17:25)

A foolish son is his father’s ruin. (Proverbs 19:13)

He who robs his father and drives out his mother is a son who brings shame and disgrace. (Proverbs 19:26)



If a man curses his father or mother, his lamp will be snuffed out in pitch darkness. (Proverbs 20:20)

My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad; my inmost being will rejoice when your lips speak what is right. (Proverbs 23:15-16)

Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old. (Proverbs 23:22)

The father of a righteous man has great joy; he who has a wise son delights in him. May your father and mother be glad; may she who gave you birth rejoice! (Proverbs 23:24-25)

My son, give me your heart and let your eyes keep to my ways. (Proverbs 23:26)

Be wise, my son, and bring joy to my heart; then I can answer anyone who treats me with contempt. (Proverbs 27:11)

He who robs his father or mother and says, “It’s not wrong” – he is partner to him who destroys. (Proverbs 28:24)

A man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father. (Proverbs 29:3)

The eye that mocks a father, that scorns obedience to mother, will be pecked out by the ravens of the valley, will be eaten by the vultures. (Proverbs 30:17)

Honor your father and mother, and love your neighbor as yourself. (Matthew 19:19)

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother – which is the first commandment with a promise – that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth. (Ephesians 6:1-3)

Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. (Colossians 3:20)

Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need. But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God. The widow who is really in need and left all alone puts her hope in God and continues night and day to pray and to ask God for help. (1Timothy 5:3-5)

3 – Disciplining Your Children

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be



upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. (Deuteronomy 6:4-7)

Fix these words of mine in your heart and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. (Deuteronomy 11:18-20)

We will not hide them from their children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, His power, and the wonders He has done…So the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget His deeds but would keep His commands. (Psalm 78:4-7)

My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline and do not resent His rebuke, because the LORD disciplines those He loves, as a father the son he delights in. (Proverbs 3:11-12)

He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him. (Proverbs 13:24)

Discipline your son, for in that there is hope; do not be a willing party to his death. (Proverbs 19:18)

Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it. (Proverbs 22:6)

Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him.(Proverbs 22:15)

Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish him with the rod, he will not die. Punish him with the rod and save his soul from death. (Proverbs 23:13-14)

The rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother. (Proverbs 29:15)

Discipline your son, and he will give you peace; he will bring delight to your soul. (Proverbs 29:17)

The living, the living – they praise you, as I am doing today; fathers tell their children about your faithfulness. (Isaiah 38:19)

4 – Proverbs for Daily Walk

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. (Proverbs 1:7)

Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck. (Proverbs 1:8-9)

But whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm. (Proverbs 1:33)

My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. (Proverbs 2:1-5)

For the LORD gives wisdom, and from His mouth come knowledge and understanding. He holds victory in store for the upright, He is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for He guards the course of the just and protects the way of His faithful ones. Then you will understand what is right and just and fair – every good path. For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you. Wisdom will save you from the ways of wicked men, from men whose words are perverse. (Proverbs 2: 6-12)

My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity. (Proverbs 3:1-2)

Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man. (Proverbs 3:3-4)

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones. (Proverbs 3:5-8)

My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline and do not resent His rebuke, because the LORD disciplines those He loves, as a father the son he delights in. (Proverbs 3:11-12)

Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who embrace her; those who lay hold of her will be blessed. (Proverbs 3:13-18)

My son, preserve sound judgment and discernment, do not let them out of your sight; they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck. Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not



stumble; when you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked, for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being snared. (Proverbs 3:21-26)

Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. Esteem her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you. She will set a garland of grace on your head and present you with a crown of splendor. (Proverbs 4:6-9)

Listen, my son, accept what I say, and the years of your life will be many. I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths. When you walk, your steps will not be hampered; when you run, you will not stumble. Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life. (Proverbs 4:10-13)

My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to a man’s whole body. Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. (Proverbs 4:20-23)

Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you. Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm. Do not swerve to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil. (Proverbs 4:25-27)

My son, keep your father’s commands and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. Bind them upon your heart forever; fasten them around your neck. When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you. For these commands are a lamp, this teaching is a light, and the corrections of discipline are the way to life. (Proverbs 6:20-23)

My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you. Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye. Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart. Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and call understanding your kinsman. (Proverbs 7:1-4)

Now then, my sons, listen to me; blessed are those who keep my ways. Listen to my instruction and be wise; do not ignore it. Blessed is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway. For whoever finds me finds life and receives favor from the LORD. But whoever fails to find me harms himself; all who hate me love death. (Proverbs 8:32-36)

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. For through me your days will be many, and years will be added to your life. If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you; if you are a mocker, you alone will suffer. (Proverbs 9:10-12)

The man of integrity walks securely, but he who takes crooked paths will be found out. (Proverbs 10:9)



Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers over all wrongs. (Proverbs 10:12)

When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. (Proverbs 11:2)

The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity. (Proverbs 11:3)

The righteousness of the blameless makes a straight way for them, but the wicked are brought down by their own wickedness. (Proverbs 11:5)

A kind man benefits himself, but a cruel man brings trouble on himself. (Proverbs 11:17)

The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise. (Proverbs 11:30)

Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid. (Proverbs 12:1)

A prudent man keeps his knowledge to himself, but the heart of fools blurts out folly. (Proverbs 12:23)

He who scorns instruction will pay for it, but he who respects a command is rewarded. The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, turning a man from the snares of death. (Proverbs 13:13-14)

Every prudent man acts out of knowledge, but a fool exposes his folly. (Proverbs 13:16)

He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm. (Proverbs 13:20)

A simple man believes anything, but a prudent man gives thought to his steps. (Proverbs 14:15)

A wise man fears the LORD and shuns evil, but a fool is hotheaded and reckless. (Proverbs 14:16)

He who fears the LORD has a secure fortress, and for his children it will be a refuge. (Proverbs 14:26)

A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones. (Proverbs 14:30)

Whoever is kind to the needy honors God. (Proverbs 14:31)

Better a little with the fear of the LORD than great wealth with turmoil. (Proverbs 15:16)

The LORD is far from the wicked but He hears the prayer of the righteous. (Proverbs 15:29)

He who listens to a life-giving rebuke will be at home among the wise. He who ignores discipline despises himself, but whoever heeds correction gains understanding. (Proverbs 15:31-32)

The fear of the LORD teaches a man wisdom, and humility comes before honor. (Proverbs 15:33)



Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed. (Proverbs 16:3)

Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for; through the fear of the LORD a man avoids evil. (Proverbs 16:6)

When a man’s ways are pleasing to the LORD, He makes even his enemies live at peace with him. (Proverbs 16:7)

How much better to get wisdom than gold, to choose understanding rather than silver! (Proverbs 16:16)

The highway of the upright avoids evil; he who guards his way guards his life. (Proverbs 16:17)

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. (Proverbs 16:18)

Better to be lowly in spirit and among the oppressed than to share plunder with the proud. (Proverbs 16:19)

Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers, and blessed is he who trusts in the LORD. (Proverbs 16:20)

Understanding is a fountain of life to those who have it, but folly brings punishment to fools. (Proverbs 16:22)

A man of knowledge uses words with restraint, and a man of understanding is even-tempered. (Proverbs 17:27)

The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. (Proverbs 18:10)

Before his downfall a man’s heart is proud, but humility comes before honor. (Proverbs 18:12)

A man’s spirit sustains him in sickness, but a crushed sprit who can bear? (Proverbs 18:14)

The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. (Proverbs 18:21)

It is not good to have zeal without knowledge, nor to be hasty and miss the way. (Proverbs 19:2)He who gets wisdom loves his own soul; he who cherishes understanding prospers. (Proverbs 19:8)

A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense. (Proverbs 19:11)

He who obeys instructions guards his life, but he who is contemptuous of his ways will die. (Proverbs 19:16)



He who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and He will reward him for what he has done. (Proverbs 19:17)

Listen to advice and accept instruction, and in the end you will be wise. (Proverbs 19:20)

The fear of the LORD leads to life: Then one rests content, untouched by trouble. (Proverbs 19:23)

The righteous man leads a blameless life; blessed are his children after him. (Proverbs 20:7)

Gold there is, and rubies in abundance, but lips that speak knowledge are a rare jewel. (Proverbs 20:15)

Do not say, “I’ll pay you back for this wrong!” Wait for the LORD, and He will deliver you.(Proverbs 20:22)

By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures. (Proverbs 24:3-4)

If you falter in times of trouble, how small is your strength! (Proverbs 24:10)

Do not gloat when your enemy falls; when he stumbles, do not let your heart rejoice, or the LORD will see and disapprove and turns His wrath away from him. (Proverbs 24:17-18)

5 – Proverbs for Everyday Life

Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act. Do not say to your neighbor, “Come back later; I’ll give it tomorrow” – when you now have it with you. (Proverbs 3:27-28)

How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest – and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man. (Proverbs 6:9-11)

Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth. (Proverbs 10:4)

When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise. (Proverbs 10:19)

A man who lacks judgment derides his neighbor, but a man of understanding holds his tongue. (Proverbs 11:12)

A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy man keeps a secret. (Proverbs 11:13)

He who puts up security for another will surely suffer, but whoever refuses to strike hands in pledge is safe. (Proverbs 11:15)

Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings; he will not serve before obscure men. (Proverbs 22:29)

Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint. Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle. (Proverbs 23:4-5)

Do not eat the food of a stingy man, do not crave his delicacies; for he is the kind of man who is always thinking about the cost. “Eat and drink,” he says to you, but his heart is not with you. You will vomit up the little you have eaten and will have wasted your compliments. (Proverbs 23:6-8)

Do not speak to a fool, for he will scorn the wisdom of your words. (Proverbs 23:9)

Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags. (Proverbs 23:20-21)

If you argue your case with a neighbor, do not betray another man’s confidence, or he who hears it may shame you and you will never lose your bed reputation. (Proverbs 25:9-10)

A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in setting of silver. (Proverbs 25:11)

Like an earring of gold or an ornament of fine gold is a wise man’s rebuke to a listening ear. (Proverbs 25:12)Through patience a ruler can be persuaded, and a gentle tongue can break a bone. (Proverbs 25:15)

If you find honey, eat just enough – too much of it, and you will vomit. (Proverbs 25:16)

Seldom set foot in your neighbor’s house – too much of you, and he will hate you. (Proverbs 25:17)

Like a bad tooth or a lane foot is reliance on the unfaithful in times of trouble. (Proverbs 25:19)

Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him. (Proverbs 26:12)



Like one who seizes a dog by the ears is a passer-by who meddles in a quarrel not his own. (Proverbs 26:17)

Without wood a fire goes out; without gossip a quarrel dies down. (Proverbs 26:20)

If a man digs a pit, he will fall into it; if a man rolls a stone, it will roll back on him. (Proverbs 26:27)

Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; someone else, and not your own lips.(Proverbs 27:2)

Better is open rebuke than hidden love. (Proverbs 27:5)

Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart, and the pleasantness of one’s friend springs from his earnest counsel. (Proverbs 27:9)

Do not forsake your friend and the friend of your father, and do not go to your brother’s house when disaster strikes you – better a neighbor nearby than a brother far away. (Proverbs 27:10)

He who works his land will have abundant food, but the one who chases fantasies will have his fill of poverty. (Proverbs 28:19)

He who rebukes a man will in the end gain more favor than he who has a flattering tongue. (Proverbs 28:23)

Whoever flatters his neighbor is spreading a net for his feet. (Proverbs 29:5)

Discipline your son, and he will give you peace; he will bring delight to your soul. (Proverbs 29:17)

Do you see a man who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for him. (Proverbs 29:20)

Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. (Proverbs 31:30)

6 – The Biblical View on Money

But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together. (Genesis 13:6)

Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, and when your herds and flocks grow large and your sliver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God. (Deuteronomy 8:12-14)



Because you did not serve the LORD your God joyfully and gladly in the time of prosperity, therefore in hunger and thirst, in nakedness and dire poverty, you will serve the enemies the LORD sends against you. (Deuteronomy 28:47-48)

Accept instruction from His mouth and lay up His words in your heart. If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored; If you remove wickedness far from your tent and assign your nuggets to the dust, your gold of Ophir to the rocks in the ravines, then the Almighty will be your gold, the choicest silver for you. Surely then you will find delight in the Almighty and will lift up your face to God. (Job 22:22-26)

If I have put my trust in gold or said to pure gold, “You are my security,” if I have rejoiced over my great wealth, the fortune my hands had gained, if I have regarded the sun in its radiance or the moon moving in splendor, so that my heart was secretly enticed and my hand offered them a kiss of homage, then these also would be sins to be judged, for I would have been unfaithful to God on high. (Job 31:24-28)

Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked. (Psalm 37:16)

Man is a mere phantom as he goes to and fro: He bustles about, but only in vain; he heaps up wealth, not knowing who will get it. (Psalm 39:6)

Do not be overawed when a man grows rich, when the splendor of his house increases; for he will take nothing with him when he dies, his splendor will not descend with him. (Psalm 49:16-17)

Though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them. (Psalm 62:10)

The law from your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold. (Psalm 119:72)

I love your commands more than gold, more than pure gold. (Psalm 119:127)

Such is the end of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the lives of those who get it. (Proverbs 1:19)

Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your corps; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine. (Proverbs 3:9-10)

Ill-gotten treasures are of no value, but righteousness delivers from death. (Proverbs 10:2)

A greedy man brings trouble to his family, but he who hates bribes will live. (Proverbs 15:27)

Better a litter with righteousness than much gain with injustice. (Proverbs 16:8)

Better a poor man whose walk is blameless than a fool whose lips are perverse. (Proverbs 19:1)

A fortune made by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapor and a deadly snare. (Proverbs 21:6)

Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint. Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle. (Proverbs 23:4-5)

He who hates ill-gotten gain will enjoy a long life. (Proverbs 28:16)

A stingy man is eager to get rich and is unaware that poverty awaits him. (Proverbs 28:22)

Two things I ask of you, O LORD; do not refuse me before I die: Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, “Who is the LORD?” Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God. (Proverbs 30:7-9)

Better one handful with tranquility than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind. (Ecclesiastes 4:6)

There was no end to his toil, yet his eyes were not content with his wealth. “For whom am I toiling,” he asked, “and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?” This too is meaningless – a miserable business! (Ecclesiastes 4:8)

Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless. As goods increase, so do those who consume them. And what benefit are they to the owner except to feast his eyes on them? The sleep of a laborer is sweet, whether he eats little or much, but the abundance of a rich man permits him no sleep. (Ecclesiastes 5:10-12)



I have seen a grievous evil under the sun: wealth hoarded to the harm of its owner, or wealth lost through some misfortune, so that when he has a son there is nothing left for him. Naked a man comes from his mother’s womb, and as he comes, so he departs. He takes nothing from his labor that he can carry in his hand. This too is a grievous evil: as a man comes, so he departs, and what does he gain, since he toils for the wind? All his days he eats in darkness, with great frustration, affliction and anger. (Ecclesiastes 5:13-17)

Like a partridge that hatches eggs it did not lay is the man who gains riches by unjust means. When his life is half gone, they will desert him, and in the end he will prove to be a fool. (Jeremiah 17:11)

They will throw their silver into the streets, and their gold will be an unclean thing. Their silver and gold will not be able to save them in the day of the LORD’s wrath. They will not satisfy their hunger or fill their stomachs with it, for it has made them stumble into sin. (Ezekiel 7:19)

Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, thought the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior. (Habakkuk 3:17-18)

Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to save them on the day of the LORD’S wrath. (Zephaniah 1:18)

“You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?” declares the LORD Almighty. “Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with his own house.” (Haggai 1:9)

I tell you the truth, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny. (Matthew 5:26)

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matthew 6:19-21)

Freely you have received, freely give. (Matthew 10:8)The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it. (Matthew 13:44-46)

What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? (Matthew 16:26)

Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. Then Jesus said to His disciples, “I tell you the truth, it is hard for a



rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” (Matthew 19:21-24)

Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and chock the word, making it unfruitful. (Mark 4:18-19)

Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions. (Luke 12:15)

The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop. He thought to himself, “What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.” Then he said, “This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I’ll say to myself, ‘You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.’” But God said to him, “You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?” This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God. (Luke 12:17-21)

Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Luke 12:32-34)

“No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.” The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus. He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of men, but God knows your hearts. What is highly valued among men is detestable in God’s sight.” (Luke 16:13-15)

Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of man will give you. (John 6:27)

The time is short. From now on those who have wives should live as if they had none; those who mourn, as if they did not; those who are happy, as if they were not; those who buy something, as if it were not theirs to keep; those who use the things of the world, as if not engrossed in them. For this world in its present form is passing away. (1Corinthians 7:29-31)

For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person - such a man is an idolater – has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. (Ephesians 5:5)

But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ. (Philippians 3:7-8)



Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the bread they eat. (2 Thessalonians 3:12)

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. (1Timothy 6:6-10)

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coning age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. (1Timothy 6:17-19)

He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a short time. He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasure of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward. (Hebrews 11:25-26)

Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)

But the one who is rich should take pride in his low position, because he will pass away like a wild flower. For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich man will fade away even while he goes about his business. (James 1:10-11)

Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” (James 4:13-15)

Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. (James 5:1-3)

For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a Lamb without blemish or defect. (1Peter 1:18-19)

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world – the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting



of what he has and does – comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever. (1John 2:15-17)

If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? (1Joh 3:17)

7 – Controlling Your Anger

Resentment kills a fool, and envy slays the simple. (Job 5:2)

In your anger do not sin; when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent. (Psalm 4:4)

Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret – it leads only to evil. (Psalm 37:8)

A fool shows his annoyance at once, but a prudent man overlooks an insult. (Proverbs 12:16)

A quick-tempered man does foolish things. (Proverbs 14:17)

A patient man has great understanding, but a quick-tempered man displays folly. (Proverbs 14:29)

A hot-tempered man stirs up dissension, but a patient man calms a quarrel. (Proverbs 15:18)

Better a patient man than a warrior, a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city. (Proverbs 16:32)

A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense. (Proverbs 19:11)

A hot-tempered man must pay the penalty; if you rescue him, you will have to do it again. (Proverbs 19:19)

Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared. (Proverbs 22:24-25)Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control. (Proverbs 25:28)

A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control. (Proverbs 29:11)

An angry man stirs up dissension, and a hot-tempered one commits many sins. (Proverbs 29:22)

For as churning the milk produces butter, and as twisting the nose produces blood, so stirring up anger produces strife. (Proverbs 30:33)

Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit, for anger resides in the lap of fools. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

Wisdom brightens a man’s face and changes its hard appearance. (Ecclesiastes 8:1)



If a ruler’s anger rises against you, do not leave your post; calmness can lay great errors to rest.(Ecclesiastes 10:4)

Anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. (Matthew 5:22)

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self –seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. (1Corinthians 13:4-8)

In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold. (Ephesians 4:26-27)

I want men everywhere to lift up holy hands in prayer, without anger or disputing. (1Timothy 2:8)

Take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry. For man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. (James 1:19-20)
