The Plan• Things we don’t usually talk about, but are very important if we are to lead effectively– Service– Building in Dissent– Communication– Responsibility– Power– Commitment– Authenticity

Case Study• Y.V. is given the task of re‐doing the night call schedule after two residents unexpectedly left the program leaving the resident workforce short‐staffed.

• Y.V.’s challenge is to come up with a schedule that the residents will accept

Case Study• Because of increased competition from the “University

Program”, a residency program comes up with a new time‐intensive initiative to recruit residents to the program that involves more one‐on‐one interaction between current residents and applicants

• One of the senior residents, V.F. actively and vehemently argues against the plan because they have not heard evidence that it will work given the cost of the effort. V.F. has a reputation for being “an obstructionist”.
