A delegate spirit award will be given the delegation at state convention with the most spirit. A spirited roll call will be a part of the convention. Groups will have one minute to present an entertaining skit or song, which will be judged on originality, delivery, creativity and over-all entertainment.

However, somewhere in the skit each school must give the number of dele-gates and adults from their school pre-sent at the convention.

All JCL delegates may participate in roll

All chapters have the opportunity to par-ticipate in IJCL’s year-round contests.

Any chapter that wishes to compete in the Helen Wampler Spirit Contest should fill out the form found in the conven-tion packet and sub-mit it to Daniel Burke, IJCL treas-urer, at state conven-tion.

Chapters interested in the publicity contest should send newspa-per clippings, radio and television infor-mation and creative publicity to Dennis Bartlow, IJCL co-chair, by Feb. 15.

The Sharon Gibson Community Service Award will go to the school with the top community service project. The applica-tion form in the state convention packet must be returned by Feb. 15.

La Bell’ Italia - a teacher’s perspective Planning the 2003 IJCL Italy trip was a labor of love. Every month I received updates on the travelers from the com-pany. I read over the names of our student travelers and wondered what they were like, who would make friends with whom and how they would react when they saw in person the size of the Colosseum or the beauty of the Pan-theon. I looked forward to the fourteen days when we would become a “family” of thirty-seven making our way over ancient paths. Even though I have been on several Italy trips, each trip , each “family”, is unique.

Mrs. Judy Hunt, Fort Wayne New Haven teacher, and her friend Anna Black counted all of our steps! On an average day we walked 15,000 steps with our highest number--23,000 and ourlow of 10,000 (total of 180,000)!

During the trip Candace Walton of Crown Point and Merrilee Garner of Elwood celebrated birthdays! Joe Fihe from Elwood found out what happens when a letter opener is discovered in your hand luggage. If you don’t want to ask Joe, you can hear the story from Mr. Walker—if he is willing to talk about it. We were serenaded at the Café Visconti in Rome and at Mt. Ippolyte (literally on a mountain) in Tivoli.

Our tour guides, Wally and Annamieke, were wonderful, supportive and full of information. Annamieke arranged a boat to take us all around the island of Capri. Everyone was excited when we spotted the goats of Capri (from which the name of the island is taken) on one of the cliffs. We stopped at a little cove where we could dive off the boat and swim in the azure sea. But our swimmers soon discovered what happens to goats who are careless climbers!

Our greatest accomplishment was a very basic one: surviving the hottest summer Italy has had in 200 years! Every day was in the high 90’s or in triple digits.

The 2005 IJCL Italy trip is already in the planning stages. I hope you will join our next traveling “family”!

Scholarships Available High school seniors are invited to apply for three Indiana Junior Classical League scholarships.

Two $600 scholarships, the Eileen Johnson and the Elizabeth Love memorial scholarships, recognize the service of IJCL members.

The third scholarship for $600 is the Augusta Lavengood Future Latin Teacher Scholarship for a student planning to become a Latin teacher.

Applications for all three scholar-ships are available from Tod Wright, IJCL scholarship chair.

Completed forms must be re-turned to him by Feb . 1.

National Certamen Students who are interested in being on one of Indiana’s certamen teams at the na-tional convention this summer in Kentucky must try out at the May 15 board meeting at Brownsburg High School unless they are a member of a first-place team at state convention.

As at state convention, there will be three divisions: Novice for Latin I students, Lower for Latin I and II; and upper for any level with emphasis on Latin III and IV.

Pre-registration is required.

The first practice for members of the state teams will follow that session.

President’s Day As you can see there were a lot of fun activities go-ing on at Presi-dents Day. With many workshops to the many games club members played.

PAGE VI VERITAS ET SCIENTIA VOLUME XXVII I ISSUE

Club News Homestead-Homestead JCL hosted the statewide certamen meet in November and made care packages to send to former JCL students who are now in college. Co-consul Shelley Gupta hosted a Saturnalia party at her house on December 9th, where students learned about Saturnalia and played holiday games. A Bowlathon is being planned for January, as well as a mythological play presentation.

Bloomington North Central-Bloomington North's Latin Club has gotten off to a wonderful start with after school meetings at "the Trojan Horse" here in Bloomington, and plans to meet at "the Olive Garden" for our Holiday meeting. The students also painted a (temporary) mural on the hall-way window to brighten up the renovation currently taking place in our school.

Mt. Vernon-Our club sponsored a fundraiser at the local restaurant Tequila's. Alex got the coupon ready. Both students and other adult support-ers presented those. With over fifty, we made 20% of our total tickets. They presented a donation of $100.00. Also, one of our first year Latin students carved her Halloween pumpkin with JCL. We had planned to attend the Odyssey production of the drama troupe "Tales and Scales"; however, due to his illness in their troupe, this has been postponed until second semester. We also sponsored a Mythological Monsters Quiz during the lunch periods on Friday, October 31, 2003. All participants received bubble gum. Winners received posters of Russell Crowe as the Gladiator.

TH South-South Latin Club held our Saturnalia party with initiation (journey through the Underworld), and decorated a Christmas tree for the A-V room. We held weekly bake sales. We have three juniors in cadet teaching Latin in two elementary schools so far. Ann Chi our president was a national Siemens science winner. These Latin scholars were named semifinalists in the 49th National Merit Scholarship Program. Ann Chi, Kristen Clark, and Chastity Williams.

Elwood– Our club has had our annual fall party, which everyone had a good time. We went to the certamen meet at Homestead which went well. We also did our Christmas families this year. We help two families out that live in our town during the Christmas holidays. Also we had our caroling party which went over very well. So far our year has been going very well, and we plan on doing more fun activities.

Apologizes to the BJCL members your news could not be printed due to computer difficulties.
