What is a Preceptorship?

• An educational program designed to give the professionally trained student experience outside the academic environment working with a licensed dental professional or other advisory supervisors.

Purpose:• Provide opportunities for dental and

dental hygiene students to develop skills for treating underserved populations and to develop into culturally competent oral health care professionals.

• Recruit more low-income and under-represented minorities to the dental profession.

“Interested Friends”• Dental Education

– Reduce operating cost for dental education

– Increase means to provide care for those with limited access and financial means

– Adds flexibility and student-friendliness to dental / dental hygiene curriculums

• Preceptor Sites– Increase access to

care for those who otherwise may not be able to obtain it

– Expand and enhance VCU presence in and long-term commitment to the area

– Establish a pipeline for the recruitment of young dentists to fill workforce vacancies
