Using all the senses Learning Outcomes: •  To recognise the importance of senses when eating

Sight volunteer: Blindfolded Taste two different coloured variants of a food (e.g. red and yellow peppers) Is it possible to distinguish which is which? Would you expect to be able to tell the difference?

Smell volunteer: Holds nose Taste three food samples A-C. Two are the same and one is similar (e.g. 2 similar yoghurts or cheeses) Is it possible to distinguish which two are the same? What about without holding the nose?

Hearing volunteer: Blindfolded Is it possible to tell which is freshest just by listening? (e.g. new versus flat fizzy drink, stale versus fresh biscuit) What other sounds help us enjoy food? (Think about cooking)

Touch volunteer: Blindfolded Identify three fruits or vegetables inside a cloth bag, just by touching? What else can we judge by touch when cooking? (Think about freshness, finished consistency)

Taste volunteer Is it possible to match three flavours with foods without tasting them? (e.g. three colourless, flavoured waters) How much easier is it when you can taste them too?

Which senses are most important to satisfy when

preparing food?
