O ld Man Winter is breathing down our necks and before long, you’ll be scraping the frost off your car windows and bundling up around the fireplace. Before you do that, though, don’t put away your garden tools just yet. REW.ca went to Conor Preston, gardener at Vancouver’s Figaro’s Garden, for his best advice on how to prepare your gardens and lawns for winter. “By properly winterizing the garden, you not only help plants survive the short gray days and cool nights that winter brings, it’s an important step in ensuring the garden will produce colourful flowers in the spring,” says Preston. Here are his five key tips. 1) Clean Up Debris For your garden to thrive, you must first clean up last year’s debris, such as leaves or branches. Removing dead and dying foliage will give your garden a spruced-up look all winter. Leaves make for great mulch for your garden beds, so compost them or rake them right into your soil. “If you have compost bin in which the waste has broken down for a year, add that into your garden beds along with some manure and granular fertilizer,” says Preston. 2) Pruning and Storing Plants Look for weak, dead, broken or overgrown plants or trees and do some major pruning. Also, take a good look at your evergreens and give them a “thin out.” Even if plants are healthy, they could usually still benefit from a good fall pruning. If you still have non-hardy flowering plants such as dahlias or gladiolas in the ground, lift them out and store them in a cool, dark place for the winter. With all the winter rain BC is famous for, it’s a good idea to bring your container plants, such as geraniums or pelargonium, inside to stay warm. “Bring your non-hardy plants inside and place them in a sunny window or you can dry them and store the bare roots.” 3) Divide and Conquer Fall is the perfect season to divide a wide variety of perennial plants – those plants that live and flower year after year. It’s a great practice to do this as not only does it promote the plant’s health and give them space to grow, but also you get free extra plants to place elsewhere! The general rule is to divide them a few weeks before the ground freezes so they get established before freezing weather arrives. 4) Fertilize and Lime your Lawn With our heavy West Coast rainfalls, much of the mineral content of the soil in your lawn is washed away each year. Lawns should be fertilized at regular intervals, ideally using a good fertilizer spreader. When you apply fertilizer, give your lawn a good soaking to make sure the fertilizer makes it deep into the soil. Take steps to kill and remove moss in your lawn with a liquid or granular moss control. A few days later, rake away the dead moss, apply a thin layer of soil or sand followed by grass seed where the moss once thrived. Preston says lime is an extremely important soil conditioner that helps your lawn absorbs fertilizer and discourages moss from growing. Lime won’t kill moss, but it will neutralize the pH of the soil, making fertilizer more effective. 5) Plant Trees, Shrubs and Perennials This dormant season is a great time to plant trees, shrubs and perennials. Even though plants may not look their best and the blooms won’t show up until spring, giving them time to establish themselves over winter can give them a great head start for spring. With our mild winters, most commonly grown plants won’t suffer too much from the cold. Bonus tip: Finally, clean, oil and/or fix your garden tools before you store them for the winter. Old Man Winter is breathing down our necks and before long, you’ll be scraping the frost off your car

windows and bundling up around the fi replace. Before you do that, though, don’t put away your garden tools just yet.

REW.ca went to Conor Preston, gardener at Vancouver’s Figaro’s Garden, for his best advice on how to prepare your gardens and lawns for winter.

“By properly winterizing the garden, you not only help plants survive the short gray days and cool nights that winter brings, it’s an important step in ensuring the garden will produce colourful fl owers in the spring,” says Preston.

Here are his fi ve key tips.

1) Clean Up Debris For your garden to thrive, you must fi rst

clean up last year’s debris, such as leaves or branches. Removing dead and dying foliage will give your garden a spruced-up look all winter.

Leaves make for great mulch for your

garden beds, so compost them or rake them right into your soil. “If you have compost bin in which the waste has broken down for a year, add that into your garden beds along with some manure and granular fertilizer,” says Preston.

2) Pruning and Storing PlantsLook for weak, dead, broken or overgrown

plants or trees and do some major pruning. Also, take a good look at your evergreens and give them a “thin out.” Even if plants are healthy, they could usually still benefi t from a good fall pruning.

If you still have non-hardy fl owering plants such as dahlias or gladiolas in the ground, lift them out and store them in a cool, dark place for the winter.

With all the winter rain BC is famous for, it’s a good idea to bring your container plants, such as geraniums or pelargonium, inside to stay warm. “Bring your non-hardy plants inside and place them in a sunny window or you can dry them and store the bare roots.”

3) Divide and ConquerFall is the perfect season to divide a

wide variety of perennial plants – those plants that live and fl ower year after year. It’s a great practice to do this as not only does it promote the plant’s health and give them space to grow, but also you get free extra plants to place elsewhere! The general rule is to divide them a few weeks before the ground freezes so they get established before freezing weather arrives.

1555 West Eighth blends the best of Burrard Slopes with exemplary design details catered to the discerning homeowner.

In one of the most sought-after Vancouver neighbour-hoods, mere minutes from

downtown Vancouver, will rise Kenstone Properties’ newest project - 1555 West Eighth.

Nestled in the heart of the vibrant Burrard Slopes neighbourhood, with its intimate shops and eater-ies (including popular spots such as Farmer’s Apprentice, Beaucoup Bakery, Paul’s Omelettery and Cheesecake Etc.), and numerous entertainment options, 1555 West Eighth will feature 20 residences in two contemporary four and eight-storey buildings separated

by a common lobby.

“What about a building of penthouses? That was the cre-ative starting point: To curate a collection of extraordinary homes from artists who share the same uncompromising phi-losophy for approaching design with clarity of purpose,” explains Edwin Liang, Director at Kenstone Properties.

Inside the white-oak paneled lobby, a minimal palette of con-crete, stone, and wood extend from the outside in, blurring the lines between the indoor and outdoor.

With only one residence per fl oor in the four-storey building and two per fl oor on the eight-storey building, these residences truly do feel more like executive penthouses than they do condo-miniums. Add to that the angular glazing treatments on the win-dows, which off er not only more privacy but bathe each home in an abundance of natural light.

Designed by award-winning architects at Offi ce of Mcfarlane Biggar, Kenstone Properties

promises 1555 West Eighth will be a masterpiece of contempo-rary architecture, aff ording the utmost in privacy, serenity and luxury. The buildings are a merg-ing of concrete, glass, Western red cedar soffi ts, and steel metal panels with assorted profi les to create a unique and stunning grooved texture. Complementing the exterior facades are the multi-layered balconies and roof overhangs to minimize the glare from the westerly sun.

These three-bedroom residenc-es, ranging from 1,644 to 1,882 square feet, feature meticulous planning and thought: Expansive fl oor-to-ceiling windows frame principal views; intelligent space planning maximizes square foot-age for living and entertaining; and ultra-effi cient heating and cooling systems provided by Jaga of Belgium provide climatic comfort via four individually con-trolled zones.

The level of fi nishes in the gourmet-inspired kitchens are

similarly exceptional—thanks to a premium European appliance package and the exquisite Italian cabinetry by European leader Friul Intagli.

A private courtyard features a Zen-inspired garden where resi-dents can enjoy their morning coff ee while taking in the beauti-fully landscaped grounds.

For nearly 25 years, Kenstone Properties has taken its cues from design visionaries to build pro-gressive living spaces that stand the test of time. Inspired by the urban and natural landscapes of British Columbia, the renowned builder has a tradition of creating homes of enduring value.

The architecture, the neighbour-hood and the interior design boast an inspiring concoction of old world elegance and modern luxury.

Inquiries are by private appointment only with occupancy expected in 2017. For more infor-mation please visit www.1555w8.com, or contact the sales team at 604-828-3998.
