Look around! These days it’s nothard to find folks who “appear” tobe living “in high cotton” who arereally struggling to make theirbills. What my dad used to call “BigHat. No Cattle.” We call themHundred Thousand DollarMillionaires…..and they are adime a dozen. You know exactlywho I am talking about.

These are your neighbors, andfriends, and people you go tochurch with, who have becomeentangled by all the worldly thingsthey “thought” would make themhappy and all the debt to goesalong with it. Many of them areone paycheck away from disaster. They have lots of things, lots ofmonthly payments, and nothing insavings or investments. This “Iwant everything…and I want itnow” mentality abounds in all levels of society from our government spending down to ourpersonal economies.

One of the things I tell myclients is “You can have almostanything you want. You just can’thave everything.” Some peoplewant everything now…and that’swhere financial problems come in!In reality, a determined focus onwhat’s really important to you canget you almost anything, as longas you’re able to let go of extraneous things and activities inthe process.

Becoming financially maturestarts with a shift in mindset. Wehave to begin thinking of moneynot as an end in itself, but as a toolthat helps us get or do what we

want. Don’t let the tail wag thedog! Becoming financially fitrequires us to make values-baseddecisions on what is important tous, trim the fat, and stay focused.

True wealth is an inner sense ofabundance, not outward displaysof bling-bling. If you value timewith your family, then you shouldfind time to be fully present andengaged with those you love. Youshould save and plan for a familyvacation that will give you lastingmemories. If you value being ableto spend your golden years with-out fear of whether or not socialsecurity will be around, then saveand plan those retirement years. Ifyou value buying nice things thenbuy nice things and stop buyingjunk. Even if you are on a limitedbudget, save for what you trulywant and value instead of throw-ing your money away …. just soyou can have it now!

When I talk with clients aboutthings like money management, budgets, and saving, you can

almost feel the oxygen beingsucked out of the room. It’s as if Ihave asked them to go on a 500calorie a day diet. This is becausefolks associate these terms withfeelings of self-denial, discipline, and conflict.

What I am talking about hereis more about embracing what youwant out of life and letting otherthings fall away. Instead of engag-ing in a grueling battle to denyyourself, simply focus on what haslong-term value for you. Savingmoney flows naturally from that.

Here are 3 simple steps: 1) Determine what you reallyvalue. 2) Set specific goals to accomplish.3) Either earn more money for thethings you value or spend less onthe things you don’t.

Remember, there are noarmored trucks at a funeral proces-sion. In other words INVEST inyourself, in your dreams, in yourfuture, in a lifestyle that fulfills andenriches you and those you love, and you will not only be happierbut you’ll be richer in so manyways. CCustom Cabinets for ChristmasBy Shelly Robinson

The heat of summer is easing, and now is the time for homeowners to tackle those projects that have been put offin anticipation of cooler weather. If your fall plans include replacing cabinetry in thekitchen or bath, consider theoptions available at BrunsonCabinet Company in Oologah.Owner Bill Jack would be happyto visit with you and show youjust how affordable and stress-free custom cabinetry can be.

Everyone desires a beautifulhome, especially with the holidays just around the corner, and September is the last monthto order in time for Christmasinstallation. Bill says in a time oftight budgets and inspiring do-it-yourself shows, many homeowners are tempted to cutremodeling costs by purchasingready-made kitchen and bath-room cabinetry at big box stores, but the results of piecing together stock cabinets are oftennot what the homeowner envisioned. “Many times peoplewind up way over budget tryingto make something work in aspace that it doesn’t really fitinto, resulting in a lot of frustration and additional cost.”

“Everything we build is

hickory, alder, knotty alder, ashand cherry. Bill noted that knotty alder has recently becomehis most requested cabinetrymaterial, although those with traditional taste often prefer oakand maple.

Because a kitchen or bath

custom made and an exact fit forthe allotted space in our clients’kitchen or bath. Our productswill fit perfectly in the space forwhich they were designed,”explains Bill. This eliminates theneed for filler type boards orwasted space and makes theprice competitive with the bigbox stores. There is also theadded value of old-fashioned customer service, which is hardto come by these days. Bill willtake care of all the measure-ments and calculations, and anappointment in the Oologahshowroom, conveniently locatedjust off Highway 169, allows customers to view a large varietyof samples.

Bill offers homeowners theunique opportunity to dealdirectly with the manufacturer sothere are no markups or salescommissions, and everything isbuilt onsite in his shop inOologah. Brunson CabinetCompany has been in businesssince 1956. Bill has owned thebusiness for the past 13 yearsand offers an all-wood cabinet,so you can be assured of qualityworkmanship and materials.

A large variety of beautifulwoods is available to choosefrom, including oak, maple,

project isn’t complete withoutbeautiful countertops, a hugeselection of solid surface, gran-ite, acrylic marble and more isavailable at Brunson as well. Billsays he has seen the pricing ofgranite become much moreaffordable in the past three years,

making this elegant and durableproduct available for those witha stricter budget.

Getting your project startedis as easy as a phone call. Bill willtake your job from the planningand measuring stage throughinstallation, finishing with mini-mum stress and maximum value. He will create a computerizeddrawing, showing the projectwith your choice of materials, and if there is ever a concernafter the job is complete, you’llhave peace of mind knowing youare dealing directly with the owner of the company.

CGet a Leg Up on VeinsBy Sheryl Sowell

The hot summer days are winding down – you’ve beenrunning errands in shorts, wearing skirts to work, and hit-ting the pool in your swimsuit.Chances are your legs have beenon display all day, every day, andyou can’t help but notice all oftheir imperfections. For many, unsightly leg veins are a realproblem. Fall will be here beforeyou know it, and that is the per-fect season to begin treatment toget rid of those unattractive andsometimes painful leg veins.Mallory Spoor-Baker, D.O., ofAdvanced Cosmetic Medicinesuggests calling now to scheduleyour free consultation for legvein therapy this upcoming cooler season.

Generally, the best time ofyear to receive leg vein treat-ments is during the fall. You mayexperience a slight reddening orswelling of the skin after treatments (and legs can lookworse before they look better),so most people prefer to keeptheir legs covered during thistransitional period. During thecooler weather, when they arealready covered up from head totoe, is an ideal time to start treatments. In addition, Dr. Spoor-Baker instructs her

problems are a result of abnormal flow of blood throughthe veins. Any condition thatputs excessive pressure on anindividual’s legs – pregnancy, standing for long periods of

time, and obesity, to name a few– can result in varicosities.Genetics and age are also contributing factors. Due to

patients to wear compressionhosiery for two weeks, whichhelp aid in the healing process, making treatments work better.

Spider veins, also known asbroken capillaries, are thin and

appear in a cluster of red, blue orpurple veins, resembling spiderlegs. Varicose veins are thickerand deeper. Both leg vein

hormones, spider and varicoseveins are more prevalent inwomen than in men. “Heredityand occupation, as well as overallhealth status, have a lot to dowith whether people develop

these conditions,” says Dr. Spoor-Baker.

Although spider veins andvaricose veins can be

uncomfortable and sometimespainful, the main reason mostpeople decide to have them treated is cosmetic – they aresimply unpleasant to look at.

Two methods are availableto eliminate unsightly leg veins. The first method is called sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy is aprocedure in which medicine isinjected into the vessels, whichmakes them shrink. The secondmethod is a laser procedure inwhich a light device uses theenergy of light to damage thevessels, causing them to shutdown. This treatment is used byplacing a hand-held unit on theskin. Most patients experience astinging sensation as the pulsesof energy are delivered throughthe hand piece. No local anesthesia or pain medicine isneeded and appointments lastone hour.

The number of treatmentsdepends upon the vessels, theirsize, and other factors. Three tofive treatments are the norm, again depending on various factors. Leg vein treatments areperformed one month apart.

To schedule a free consultation to begin leg veintherapy this fall, call AdvancedCosmetic Medicine at (918) 280-0270.

II Can Hear You Now!By Duane Blankenship

Most of us schedule an annualphysical with the family doctor,go to the dentist twice a year, andhave our vision checked annually. So why do we never have ourhearing checked? Good question, especially when the AmericanMedical Association recommendsdoing so annually. Dr. GeneWoodard is a licensed audiologistand owner of Advantage

patients. Services include every-thing from hearing testing tohelping patients select a hearingaid with the features that best fittheir lifestyles. AdvantageAudiology helps get you “back inthe conversation” and connectedwith friends and family.

Hearing InstrumentSpecialist Jeff King has over 14 years of experience and says,“I love helping people improvetheir hearing. I base my successon the successes I have in correct-ing our patients’ hearing losses.”

“Most hearing problems arecaused by damage to the nervecells,” says Dr. Gene. This type ofhearing problem is commonlycalled “nerve deafness.” The mostcommon causes are exposure tonoise and the aging process. When the inner ear or auditorynerve is damaged, a weak, distorted and incomplete messageis sent to the brain and understanding becomes difficult,if not impossible. Although nervedeafness cannot be medicallycured, it can be helped or treated

Audiology & Hearing Aids, located at the Farm ShoppingCenter in Tulsa. Dr. Gene, as heis affectionately known by hispatients, says, “It is sad to live alife less than to the fullest becauseof difficulty hearing.”

The first signs of hearingloss are often subtle. Do you haveto strain to hear? Do you blameothers for mumbling? Are youoften able to hear someone speak-

ing, but cannot understand whatthey’re saying? Do you have trou-ble understanding what’s beingsaid on TV? Maybe you’ve startedavoiding social situations becauseit’s difficult to understand whentwo or more people are speaking, especially when background noiseis present. Be honest. Isn’t it timeyou contact Advantage Audiologyand set up a complimentary hearing screening test?

YYour Surgeon CanMake the Difference

By Joshua Danker-Dake

When Patsy Wessel, 72, ofOilton, Oklahoma, had kneereplacement surgery with Dr. Ronald S. LaButti this pastMarch, she was coming off a prior knee surgery. The differ-ence in the two procedures, shesays, was like night and day.

“I had already had one surgery done, and it was verypainful,” Wessel says. “I didn’thave a good experience with myfirst doctor, and I didn’t feel likemy physical therapist did a verygood job either. But with Dr. LaButti, it was very different. I had a very good expe-rience with him.”

Wessel’s knee problemsdeveloped gradually, overdecades, she says. “I’m 72 yearsold, and I’m in my 34th year inmy job, where I walk and standon cement. I have four children, and where I lived had cementfloors. I’ve worked hard in mylife, you know? You just wearyour knees out.”

Wessel says the kneereplacement with Dr. LaButti

didn’t use that machine. “Hehad someone physically doing it,and they can hurt you.Sometimes I was crying by thetime they finished. But with themachine, it didn’t hurt, and itkept the knee limber. It workedso well.”

Overall, Wessel says, herexperience was exceptional.“The hospital was excellent. Dr. LaButti was excellent, andhe was very nice. I’ve already recommended Dr. LaButti to anumber of people, and I wouldrecommend him to anyone.”

For more information onDr. LaButti or knee or hipreplacement surgery, visitwww.hipandkneedoc.com.

was an immeasurably betterexperience than her previous sur-gery. “Yes, I had pain – it’salways painful. But for a kneereplacement, it was significantlybetter,” she says. “I had muchless pain. It was a good experience. Dr. LaButti told methat the surgery went perfectly, and I believe it. In a short time, Iwas able to get up and walk with-out so much pain because ofhow well it was done. I wasn’teven on my cane or walker morethan a week before I could walkby myself.”

A big part of Wessel’s goodexperience was her knee rehabilitation. Dr. LaButti prescribed a continuous passivemotion machine for physicaltherapy, and Wessel says itworked wonders. “Dr. LaButtisent me home with thismachine: for two hours, threetimes a day, you put your leg init, and it raises and works yourknee. It worked wonderfully, andit doesn’t hurt.”

Wessel says her first doctor

Patsy Wessel had two very different knee replacement experienceswith two surgeons.

operation with Dr. Ronald LaButti.

This brand-new technology produces a3-D image of the knee which allows for superior surgical accuracy and alignment. When compared to more traditional forms of navigation, theiBlock cutting guide provides a significant advantage not only for the surgeon, but for the patient as well.

When a joint is replaced, even a miniscule misalignment between theimplant and the bones can harm joint performance and longevity. This innovative technique allows for precisemeasurements made dynamically inreal time.

There are only five “iBlock” units in theUnited States, and this technology is available in Tulsa only with Dr. LaButti.

FFamilies Save andEarn at JBF

By Sheryl Sowell

The economy continues to be abig topic of conversation rightnow for people of all walks oflife – everyone is trying to figureout how to pinch a few extrapennies and earn some extracash. A perfect solution formany families is buying and consigning at Just BetweenFriends, the nation’s leading children’s and maternity consignment event.

Just when the economyseems to be getting better, something else pops up, and itfinds a way to contribute toinflation and the shrinkage ofeveryone’s take-home pay. This istaking its toll on many families’budgets, especially when itcomes to purchasing for back toschool. As many parents know, buying clothes, shoes and otheritems needed for school can getexpensive.

Participating in JBF is a win-win financially for both consignors and shoppers.Consignors typically make 65 percent of sales from their merchandise, while those whoconsign and volunteer make

and maternity clothing in addi-tion to baby equipment, house-hold furniture, software, videos, toys and much more. “Moms, dads and grandparents can getquality items for their children atamazingly low prices and still beable to buy the groceries for thatmonth," Leffingwell said.

Amber Post, franchisee ofSouthwest Tulsa and Owasso, was a JBF shopper before shestarted organizing her own JBFevents. "We were young collegestudents, broke and on a tightbudget," Post said. She had a six-month-old daughter the firsttime she shopped at a JBF andeven then, she was a slave tofashion. Before, Post had to relyon her mom and grandma to buythe really cute things. "I couldonly afford to buy her the basicsand shop the clearance racks, butonce I discovered JBF, it was likea dream come true," she said.Suddenly Post could buy every-thing she wanted for her and notjeopardize her family's budget.

After shopping once, shedecided to consign and receiveda check for $75 from items she

70 percent. Consignors also havethe advantage of creating theirown prices for items no longerbeing used around the house. With better returns than mostconsignment shops can offer andfar less hassle than a garage sale, consignors are able to take alltheir items in one day andchoose to pick up or donateitems that don’t sell.

According to MarcyLeffingwell, one of the new own-ers of Just Between FriendsBroken Arrow/Bixby, the pricesand selection for shoppers isunrivaled, and they can find anentire season’s worth of items inone stop without spending a tonof cash. “This helps families notonly eat better, they live betterbecause JBF helps put someexpendable income back in thefamily budget because of thegreat savings that can be foundat a JBF sales event,” Leffingwellsaid.

Typically shoppers can save50 to 90 percent off clothes andequipment, compared to retailprices. Items available includegently-used children’s, junior’s

sold, and she was hooked. It wasso easy to do, and a sales eventhas so much to offer in terms ofclothes, shoes, toys, books andmore for the upcoming season.

Daven Tackett, owner ofJust Between Friends Tulsa andco-founder of JBF, is mostpleased that the sale is a dignified way for a parent to buychildren's clothes at great savings. Moms and dads can feelgood about letting their childrenwear and play with the itemspurchased.

"My mother was divorcedand disabled, trying to raisethree girls on a fixed income. She did many creative things tomake ends meet, including buy-ing some of our clothes fromresale and going to garage sales,"Tackett said. "As kids, we didn'tknow there was any other way tobuy clothes. We were just always

excited and happy about gettingsomething new to wear."

Families across the nationare realizing shoppingresale/consignment makes sense.Just Between Friends has twoarea sales coming up. Owassowill occur September 13-16 nextto Reasor’s, and JBF BrokenArrow/Bixby is taking placeOctober 11-13 at the SpiritBankEvent Center. For more information, such as eventhours, go to JBFSale.com.

The next Just Between Friends sales events will be held in Owasso, September13-16 next to Reasor’s and in Broken Arrow/Bixby at the SpiritBank Event Center,October 11-13.

YYou Don’t Have to Shoulder the Pain

By Sheryl Sowell

Most people who experienceknee or hip pain know that jointreplacement surgery is a viableoption to deal with their problem. Many people whoexperience shoulder pain, however, are unaware that theytoo have options. According toBrian Chalkin, D.O., of TheOrthopaedic Center,“Unfortunately, many folks donot realize that shoulder replacement surgery can be ahighly successful solution. Theycontinually live in chronic painbecause they are unaware of thetreatment options available.”

Dr. Chalkin doesn’t wantanyone else to miss out on livinglife to the fullest due to shoulderpain, and that is why he is presenting a free seminar onshoulder pain and the latesttreatment options available. Theseminar will be held Friday,September 14, 2012 from noonto 1 p.m. at the Oklahoma HeartInstitute – Lecture Hall atHillcrest Medical Center, 1120S. Utica in Tulsa.

“The goal of the seminar isto educate and inform the community on chronic pain and limited motion of the shoulder,

commitment to advancement oforthopaedic technology stemming from its close collaboration with orthopaedicsurgeons and thought leadersthroughout the world.

The seminar will includestories of patients who have hadtheir shoulder pain successfullytreated, as well as open discus-sion with Dr. Chalkin, who willanswer any questions patientsmay have. Attendees may bringtheir spouse or a guest, andlunch will be served. The semi-nar is free, but space is limited.Call (877) 585-0125 to register.

“This comprehensive seminar is an excellent freeresource for the community andwill cover the causes of chronicpain and limited motion in theshoulder, as well as expose theaudience to treatment options, solutions and rehabilitation,”says Dr. Chalkin.

Dr. Brian Chalkin has performed hundreds of shoulderreplacement operations. He specializes in the treatment ofupper extremity conditionswhich affect the shoulder, elbowand hand. Dr. Chalkin graduatedfrom Rutgers University and

and how patients can relievetheir symptoms,” said Dr. Chalkin. “Shoulder replacement is similar to otherjoint replacements such as kneesand hips, but is less common, and therefore many people simply do not know about it.”

Dr. Chalkin explains thatshoulder pain can have a numberof causes – earlier traumas in aperson’s younger years such asdislocation of the shoulder, previous surgeries for rotatorcuff problems, labral tears, anddegenerative or rheumatoidarthritis. Symptoms include notbeing able to reach as far asyou’d like; not being able to com-fortably comb your hair, scratchyour back, or use a vacuum; andsuffering from chronic, extremepain in the shoulder area.

Tornier, a global medicaldevice company and one of theleaders in shoulder replacementtechnology, will sponsor the seminar. Since its foundingapproximately 70 years ago,Tornier’s “Specialists ServingSpecialists” philosophy has fostered a tradition of innovation, intense focus on surgeon education, and

from New York College ofOsteopathic Medicine with hon-ors. Following his orthopaedicsurgery residency at OklahomaState University, he completedthe coveted Hand and UpperExtremity Fellowship at theCurtis National Hand Center inBaltimore. He lectures nationallyand teaches Oklahoma StateUniversity Orthopaedic Surgeryresidents new cutting-edge techniques in hand, elbow andshoulder surgery. Dr. Chalkin is

also credited with the development of new orthopaedicimplants used internationally.Dr. Chalkin joined TheOrthopaedic Center in 2004.For more information, visitwww.toctulsa.com.

Many circumstances call forfinancial decisions, you may begoing through period-of-lifechanges including retirement, ajob change, divorce, or even set-tling the estate of a family mem-ber following a death. Whateveryour financial situation, one ofyour best investments today could

very well be seeking the advice ofsomeone with the knowledge, know how and experience to helpyou make the most of yourfinances now and for the future.“A lot of folks visit our officeswith questions and concernsabout the options they now haveas they have been affected byrecent changes in their lives,” saidMelanie. Layoffs, changes inretirement plans, discontinuationof pension plans, and take-oversare all transition events that couldprovide opportunities for you tomake new, smarter decisions withyour money. “Having your retire-ment assets in your own IRAwhere you make the decisionsabout who will manage your mon-ey, is always a better decision thanleaving it with ‘the company,’”she added.

Melanie also shared, “Manypeople hesitate because they fearit may cost too much. You shouldbe concerned about cost. Thefees of most investments are stan-dard across the board. They arethe same no matter who you pur-chase them from. You are likelyto pay between one and two per-cent of your portfolio value for aprofessional to manage your mon-ey. They are worth every penny. You can lose more than that inthe market in a matter of min-utes.” Ken added, “You don’thear of people shopping for thecheapest doctor. Let me assureyou, you don’t want the cheapest investment advice either.”

“With today’s volatile markets, it’s wise to develop astrategy to help you adapt,” saidKen. “If you don’t, you could

Gleam Guard eliminates thehuge mess and time of remodeling – and most jobs takeonly one to two days to complete.“We refinish all interior wood-work, painted or stained, and thefinish will last for decades,” saysBill. “If you walk into a kitchenthat Gleam Guard did 24 yearsago when owner Tracy Booth firstbegan the company, you’d beabsolutely amazed at how good itstill looks.”

Customers receive a five-year touchup warranty, which is transferrable to newowners. “This is a great sellingpoint for people who are puttingtheir home on the market,” addsBill. “When the cabinets in a

home look pristine, the value and salability of the house reallyincreases.”

The reasonable cost is anoth-er great perk. According to Bill, the sandless refinishing process ofGleam Guard costs about a thirdof traditional refinishing.

Besides kitchen and bathcabinets, Gleam Guard can alsobe applied to doorframes, woodwork, paneling, baseboardsand all wood trims that are paint-ed, pickled or stained. Customerscan choose a range of glosses, from a satin finish to high gloss.“We are infinitely adjustable onthe type of gloss a customerwants,” says Bill.

The special Gleam Guard for-

mula bonds to the original finish, enhances the wood grain andgives it a fresh oiled look that willnever again need traditional pol-ishing. All cleaning and finishingproducts used in the process are eco-friendly, and so is mainte-nance. Bill explains that for clean-ing, dipping a cloth in warmwater should do the job, but ifmore cleaning power is needed, add some white vinegar to thewater.

“If you’re doing a kitchenremodel, give us a call first. Wecan discuss the best time toschedule the refinishing part ofthe project,” Bill says. “And ifanyone is thinking of replacingkitchen or bathroom cabinets,

AArt on the HillBy Lorrie Ward

It is a work of art all by itself.Rogers State University presidesover the western end of Will

white brick and gold domegleaming in the sun against thebackdrop of blue sky on a clear

Rogers Boulevard in Claremore,Preparatory Hall creating acrown on College Hill with its

day. This place goes beyondbeing aesthetically pleasing, however. Within the walls of thisuniversity, artistic minds havebeen, and continue to be,enriched and inspired to higherlevels of learning and creativity. That makes Rogers StateUniversity the perfect spot forRSU’s Art on the HillInvitational Art Festival onSeptember 28 from noon to 6 p.m. and September 29 from10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Gary Moeller, departmenthead and professor at the department of fine arts at RogersState University, has beeninvolved with Art on the Hillsince its beginning in 2010,when the First Lady of RSU,Peggy Rice, conceived the idea.“Peggy thought it would be agreat idea to involve the community with an open festivalfor visual arts and other types ofartistic endeavors,” he recalls.“I’ve been more than happy tohelp as this festival has grownand evolved.” This year, RebeccaBacchetti, painter, teacher andon-site coordinator for RSU’sItalian Studies at Large, alongwith her husband Matteo, jazzmusician and chef, will also helpcoordinate the activities.

The word “festival” aptlydescribes this event, which willhost all types of art, pleasing toboth the eye and ear, created bystudent, amateur, and professional artists, with prizesawarded to winning entries.Large tents will be set up forbooths displaying different formsof visual art – drawings,

photography, paintings – as wellas for traditional arts and craftssuch as woodturning and jewelrymaking. This year opening onSeptember 28, previous Art onthe Hill award winners andscholarship winners will showtheir art work in RSU’sFoundations Gallery in BairdHall. This festival is designed tobe enjoyed as a mostly outdoorevent, with musicians, theatreactors and student groups performing in amphitheatersacross the campus grounds. “Weformerly held the festival inspring, but moved it to fallbecause our weather is so muchmore predictable this time ofyear, as spring brings a lot of rainand wind problems,” Gary notes.“We also no longer have to compete with Capstone andgraduation activities – we thinkthis will work much better foreveryone.” Food vendors willalso be available across campus, and the Student Art Associationwill once again host a children’stent, where kids can expresstheir own creativity and learnabout art.

For more information oncompetition and prizes or toreserve booth space, visit the Arton the Hill website atwww.rsu.edu/artonthehill.
