Orchids are more popular than ever, but can be intimidating in their exotic beauty. They have been collected and grown for commercial purposes for more than 150 years. While orchids are available to casual gardeners and hobbyists, many still regard selecting and caring of orchids for only the greenest of green thumbs. With these helpful books, orchids are rewarding for both the amateur and serious grower.

The Orchid Whisperer: Expert Secrets for Growing Beautiful Orchids (Chronicle Books, 2012) humorously provides orchid instruction. For the novice are tips for the 12 most popular easy-to-grow orchids. Care essentials include watering, fertilizing, repotting, and common myths for the grower. Added features are creative decorating ideas whether choosing containers, or displaying orchids to create centerpieces and garlands.

International author, Mike Tibbs, Orchids (Ball Pub., 2007) gives details on growing orchids from seeds in the greenhouse, the home, or the outdoors. Information is included on the major orchid families and their characteristics. His wealth of knowledge includes cultivating, caring and showing your orchids and orchid hybrids.

Orchids of Tropical America: An Introduc-tion and Guide (Cornell University Press, 2014) details nature reserves and conservation sites all south of the United States. Informative stories about the ecology and history of each genus make this entertaining reading. Commonsense details are given for getting started and caring for the orchids in a variety of settings.

For the non-novice, Orchids to Know and Grow (University Press of Florida, 2007) provides tips on selecting good specimens to buy and on caring for them under a variety of conditions. The authors, both horticulture professors, offer advice to prepare the plants for exhibitions, Special grow-ing arrangements, diseases, insects and physio-

logical problems are detailed. Line drawings and color images assist the reader.

With over 600 photographs, The Practical Encyclopedia of Orchids: A Complete Guide to Orchids and Their Cultivation (Hermes House, 2007) also includes step by step advice. . The directory provides habitat, size, flowering time and growing requirements. This guide includes large color photographs which add to the book’s enjoy-ment.

Michel Viardhas’ boxed set of The World of Orchids and The Most Beautiful Orchids (Flammarion, 2006) offers practical information, a complete history and a wealth of fascinating or-chid facts. Volume one includes the origins, prac-tical information on care and cultivation and the glossary and index. Volume two is a fully illustrat-ed listing of 87 varieties. An interesting fact is giv-en as a special feature for each orchid.
