I want to begin by thanking all of you for your patience and understanding during these challenging times. Al-though the offices have been officially closed, many things are taking place. Our new sound system has been installed. We also seized the moment to install wiring that will enable us to have cameras in the church for future tapings and other projects. The cameras are on order. Since this was not part of our budget, we still felt that it would be cost effective to do the camera project now, so I am appeal-ing to your generosity and if you are able, to contribute to this project. I want to thank those who have already con-tributed. We have already received over $3,000.00 in donations. Approximately $4,000.00 more is needed to cover the costs. You can send your contribution via mail, drop it in the collection basket, or by clicking on the link “Fr. Ed’s Techy Jar” on our website. You would be amazed how creative Pierre Fracalanza and Ron Hartmus

have been in bringing into your homes our worship ser-vices. With the right equip-ment, it will only get better. A special thanks to them!!!The construction, Brick by Brick, of the Church has resumed. There has been some great progress. The following are changes to our original guidelines for Masses, sacrament celebra-tions, and confessions.Reservations are still neces-sary to attend the Saturday Mass at 4:00 p.m. and the 8:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Masses on Sunday. Reservations for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday liturgies are no longer necessary. You are still dispensed from attend-ing Sunday liturgy until Sep-tember 6th. Your obligation is fulfilled by watching the video Mass or by attending one of the weekday liturgies. Please make every effort to keep Sunday the Lord’s Day, even if you are not able to attend Mass at the Church, Daily Mass will be celebrat-

Some Updates . . . .ed on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 9:00 a.m.; Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. There will not be a Mass on Friday.Confessions are available on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m.,; and on Saturdays at 2:30 p.m.Those wishing to take Com-munion to relatives that are homebound may receive the host at any of the Masses when you receive Commu-nion at Mass. The guidelines for funerals, weddings, and baptisms remain the same.First Communion and Confir-mation Celebrations will be scheduled in the near future. Pastors have been given the delegation to administer the Sacrament of Confirmation.I encourage parents to register your children for Vacation Bible School. sacrament updates

Beginning Pentecost weekend 5/30, we can return to weekend mass at 25% capacity with all attendants wearing masks. Father Ed and I will be closely monitoring the situation to determine when and how we can safely and reverently reschedule the celebration of the sacrament. Please watch the flocknotes, bulletin and website for information.

The current AOD directive is that confirmations are suspended until further notice. Please let me know if there are any extenuating circumstances that may affect the sacrament for the candidate.

The Bishops confer the sacrament of Confirmation, so the Archdiocese will reschedule all of the missed confirmations. Gathering size, state regulations, and Bishop availability will all be determining factors. I will let you know as soon as I hear anything. Please watch the flocknotes, bulletin and website for information.

important dates returning soon

Imagine a child, about 3 years old, playing on a playground. She sees other children go down a slide. It looks like fun and her father encourages her to try it. Her dad helps her up the steps of the structure and hurries to the bottom of the slide to catch her safely. Without fear, the child launches herself down the slide, trusting her dad to catch her. That’s what fathers do. They teach, encourage, challenge, while making sure their children are safe.

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus does the same for His friends. He teaches them the ways of His Father, He encourages them to try new things, venturing out to preach and heal. But He is there to catch them, correct them, and challenge them further. In today’s reading, He warns His friends of coming persecution but also tells them not to be afraid. People will disagree and even harm you, but our heavenly Father has things well in hand! Do not be afraid! You are worth more than many sparrows!

As we begin to emerge from pandemic isolation, many of us will need encouragement to visit others, to return to church, to go to stores and

restaurants. We may feel vulnerable.

And we will need guidance since there is so much conflicting information. But, like the little girl on the slide, our Father loves us and is always there to catch us. Take a moment to picture the Lord’s outstretched hands. Take three deep breaths while you imagine yourself embraced by His loving arms. Do not be afraid!

May God bless and strengthen your family!

St. James Food PantryOur monthly food program, as well as the emergency food program, is not meant to provide recipients with food for a whole month. It does, however, offer enough food for at least a week or two. This assistance allows the recipients (families, single with children, senior citizens and the disabled) to use the monies they have toward rent, utilities, gas for cars etc. The food list located on this page is updated weekly. Please consider bringing in an item or two from the list whenever attending mass. Items may also be dropped off anytime at door #6. Your continued generosity allows our pantry to make a difference in the lives of many in our community! Thank you!!

From Your Parish Nurse7 Cool Steps for Workouts in the Heat

Winter, spring, summer, or fall, regular physical activity is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. But when the temperature rises, so does the risk for heat-related illnesses, including cramps, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. These can happen when the body can’t cool itself fast enough. The Mayo Clinic advises taking these precautions when exercising in hot weather:

1. Watch the temperature. Check weather forecasts and heat alerts before you start your outdoor

workout to see what the temperature is expected to be. If you're concerned about the heat or humidity, stay indoors. Work out at the gym, or walk laps or climb stairs inside an air-conditioned building.

2. Start slowly. If you’re used to exercising indoors or in cooler weather, or if you’re new to exercise or not in the best of shape, be extra cautious when you exercise in the heat. Start slowly, and take lots of breaks. Gradually increase the length and intensity of your workout over a week or more.

3. Drink plenty of water. Don't wait until you’re thirsty. Help your body sweat and cool down by drinking water frequently.

4. Dress the part. Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose fitting clothing to help sweat evaporate and keep you cooler. If possible, wear a light-colored, wide-brimmed hat.

5. Respect the sun. Exercise in the morning or evening, when it’s likely to be cooler. Try to exercise in shady areas. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and reapply at least every 2 hours or after sweating. A sunburn decreases your body's ability to cool itself and increases the risk of skin cancer.

6. Use the buddy system. Exercise with a friend to watch for signs of problems. Get help if you experience cramps, nausea, fatigue, headache, profuse sweating, dizziness, confusion, irritability, or vision problems. These can be signs of a heat-related illness.

7. Check with a doctor, if necessary. Certain medical conditions or medications can increase your risk of a heat-related illness. Talk to your doctor about precautions.

CYO Football Fall Sign-UpAt this point, CYO is going forward with plans for the fall sport’s season. If there are any changes in those plans, we will make adjustments as needed. Until then, registration is open for the 2020 Season of the Northwest Catholic Saint’s Fall Football Season. St James is one of eight local parishes coming together to form a team. Football is a great sport to teach your child important life lessons, including hard work, discipline, physical fitness, persistence, and team work. CYO football is the only league that provides quality football instruction in a Christian Faith-based environment. The Northwest Catholic Football program helps incorporate those lessons while teaching skills, technique and Christian Values. We are looking forward to a fun and rewarding season!

Boys in Grades 3 through 8 in the fall are eligible to play football with the Northwest Catholic Saint’s CYO Football Program.

Registration can be completed online at nwcatholicfootball.com If you have questions, please contact us at [email protected]

CYO Fall Season Update Please check the St James - CYO webpage for important updates about the upcoming fall seasons.
