DISCUSSION PAPER 14.11

A word cloud generated by Wordle (Feinberg, 2013) from occurrences of key words in the titles of the first 750 discussion papers. * Economics, Business School, The University of Western Australia, Crawley WA 6009. I would like to thank Winthrop Professor Ken Clements for his trust, guidance and insight in the preparation of this paper. I am also grateful for the assistance of the administrative staff in the Economics Discipline - Isabela Banea, Aya Kelly, Ha Le, Anna Wiechecki and Milica Rajkovic - for scanning over 150 ‘missing’ discussion papers. Thanks goes to Philomena Humphries and Michelle Mahoney from Reid Arts and Business Library, UWA, for searching for several discussion papers missing from the UWA collection. Additionally, thanks go to Associate Professor Juerg Weber and Aiden Depiazzi for their editorial assistance and valuable suggestions.

1. Introduction

The UWA Economics Discussion Paper Series has, for the past 33 years, provided a

platform for economic research, collaboration amongst academic economists, and the

debate of policy issues. More than 750 papers have been published since the inception of

the Series in 1980. The Discipline’s first 750 papers, the focus of this paper, contain a rich

archive of economic thought generated by the economists and affiliates of UWA over these

years. Further, the series represents a valuable store of data on the authors, their topics and

subsequent publications owing to the Series. This paper explores the Economics Discussion

Paper Series from a number of perspectives. The aim being firstly, to better record the

legacy of the Series and secondly, provide some tools for future studies on collections of

academic papers.

Since reaching the milestone release of the 150th discussion paper from the UWA

Economics Discipline, six papers have recorded the growth of the Series. Larcombe

authored the first in 1989, the second in 1990, and was followed by Nicholson (1992),

Karagiannis and Neo (1996), Fogarty (2000), and Velagic (2009). This paper is the first to

deviate from the traditional format of these papers. It does so by analysing the data

available from the list of papers in the UWA Economics Discussion Paper Series.

Additionally, data from other sources but parallel to the list are utilised in this paper.

This paper is divided into four main sections. Section 2 explores the patterns in discussion

papers identifying significant authors, academic collaborations and themes generated by the

Series. Section 3 uses additional data from RePEc (2013) to rank the post-2001 discussion

papers by downloads from this site. Finally, Section 4 examines which journals the papers

have been published in following their release in the Discussion Paper Series and ranks the

top papers by citation counts.1

2. Patterns in Discussion Papers

2.1 Discussion Paper Output

Over the course of releasing the first 750 discussion papers, approximately 23 papers have

been published each year. Figure 1 shows the number of papers per year and the

accumulated stock of papers from 1980 to 2012. The flow of discussion papers is clustered

on certain years, reflecting the dynamics of the research process. After a period of high

output from a research project a drop in the rate of production occurs while new research is

undertaken. The cyclical nature of the flow of discussion papers averages out in the long-

run, leading to a steady increase in the stock of discussion papers, as seen in Figure 1.

FIGURE 1: NUMBER OF ECONOMIC DISCUSSION PAPERS, 1980-2012

Note: Figure 1 is based on the discussion papers released by the Economics Discipline until the end of 2012. Discussion Papers 12-22 to 12-28 are not included in Table A.1, which lists the first 750 papers. Papers since this time can be found on the UWA Economics IDEAS page which is a RePEc service (IDEAS, 2013).

1 The Appendix contains a list of the first 750 papers and an updated list of papers is now included at the end of new papers in the Series.

2.2 Outstanding Contributors

The Discussion Paper Series has benefited from prolific authorship by past and present staff

and affiliated authors. Figure 2 shows the total number of papers (Panel A) and papers per

year (Panel B) of academics currently with the Discipline. Figure 3 has the corresponding

quantities for past staff and affiliates. The authors shown in each figure are those with the

highest number of papers in the Series.

Panel B shows the mean number per year, which is equal to the total divided by the number of years the author was on staff. In Figure 3, in the case of some authors the time between the release of their first and last paper was used as an approximation for the years an author was on staff. 2.3 Collaboration between Authors

The Economics Discipline has a strong tradition of collaboration in its Discussion Paper

Series. Authors from the Discipline, the University and other institutions have contributed

and collaborated in the Series. The network diagrams shown in Figures 4 to 6 demonstrate

the collaboration network created between authors for each of the last three decades. The

weights of the edges of the network (diagrammatically shown as the boldness of the

connecting lines) represent the number of papers each pair of authors has written together.

Each consecutive decade has seen the Discipline expand on collaborative links between

authors and increase the interconnectedness of the network, shown by the growing

complexity of Figures 4 to 6.

Figure 4, which applies to the 1980s, shows K.W. Clements as the centre of the largest sub-

network. Whilst Clements’ impact on the collaboration of the Series remains highly visible

in Figures 5 and 6, other authors began to assume pivotal roles in the 1990s and after the

turn of the century. P.W. Miller and N. Groenewold started to emerge as collaborative

‘nodes’ of the network in 1990-1999 (Figure 5) and these two authors became even more

visible in 2000-2009 (Figure 6). Over the 2000-2009 period M. Tcha, J. Peng and Y. Wu

also became integral to the structure of the network. Some of these authors collaborated

with fewer people but the connections they did make were significant because they joined

two larger networks together. This created potential for future collaborative efforts and

increased dissemination of ideas across a large number of authors. G.W. Harrison (Figure

4), E.A. Selvanathan and M.A.B. Siddique (Figure 5) are other examples of nodes with less

collaboration, but which play an important transitive role in their respective networks.

Interestingly by 2000-2009 these types of ‘nodes’ are less apparent due to increased

‘redundancy’ in the network, indicating increased dispersion of collaborative ties between

authors.

Figure 7 displays the total number of collaborations by author (Panel A) and the average

number of co-authors per discussion paper (Panel B). Only authors with at least 20

discussion papers were included in this figure.

Figure 8 shows the proportion of papers with multiple authors in the period from 1980 to

2012. Whilst the yearly proportion fluctuates, the trend line shows that on average the

number of papers with multiple authors has increased from approximately 20% to 50%

since 1980.

2.4 Content Analysis of Discussion Papers

Content analysis was performed over each decade of the Series and on the full set of 750

discussion papers. Figures 9 to 12 show concept maps, made using the Leximancer (2013)

software. The concept maps are built from keywords and organised by themes. The themes

are the circular regions denoted with coloured names. The distance between each keyword

and each theme shows the interrelatedness of each area of research topic, method or another

significant word from the Discussion Paper Series. Strong connections between keywords

are indicated by a connecting line.

Figure 9 displays the output for the full collection of 750 papers. It shows a broad range of

standard economic keywords and themes indicating the breadth of study undertaken by

UWA Economics since 1980.

Each map contains many different economic concepts that intermingle. The keywords and

themes indicate the changing and consistent areas of research over time. The structure and

arrangement of the diagrams show how the UWA Economics Discipline has combined

areas of research over each respective decade.

3. Publishing Papers on RePEc

“RePEc (Research Papers in Economics) is a collaborative effort of hundreds of

volunteers in 80 countries to enhance the dissemination of research in Economics and

related sciences. The heart of the project is a decentralized bibliographic database of

working papers, journal articles, books, books chapters and software components, all

maintained by volunteers. The collected data is then used in various services...”

- RePEc, 2013

The UWA Economics Discipline has used RePEc since 2001. LogEc2 (2013), a RePEc

service, provides access to the statistics for papers indexed by RePEc. This data is used in

Figure 13 and 14 to show the top 22 working papers from the Economics Discipline by

total downloads and by total downloads in the last 12 months respectively. For each paper,

the corresponding abstract views are also displayed in both figures. Table 1 contains the

details of each paper in Figure 13 and 14. The scales of Figure 13 and 14 are exponential.

4. Publishing Papers in Journals

Discussion papers are a valuable tool to the Economics Discipline. They provide a forum

for peer review and comment, an efficient way to publish new ideas, and a stepping stone to

the publication of research in peer-reviewed journals. Figure 15 shows a selection of the

Discipline’s most-cited journal articles and their citation counts. These articles originated in

the UWA Economics Discussion Paper Series and were matched by the author3. The Figure

uses citation counts from Scopus (Elsevier B.V., 2013) as a lower bound and Google

Scholar via Publish or Perish (Harzing, 2007) as the upper bound of approximate citation

counts. Since Scopus does not include all journals and only some book citation data, it is

reasonable to assume that it underestimates the number of citations an article has received.

Conversely, Google Scholar is used as an approximation for the maximum citations of an

article as it indexes a larger range of materials and some citations may be counted twice.

Self-citations are included in Table 2 along with the details of the journal article, discussion

paper and citation counts. The scale of Figure 15 is exponential.

Figure 16 is a bar graph displaying the frequency of publication of discussion papers in

certain journals. The top seven journals are show in this Figure, however only the matches

that were made are able to be counted. As a result Figure 16 may omit some journals and

most likely underestimates paper counts for the journals present (for method see footnote

3). The journal found by the matching process (footnote 3) to publish the most discussion

papers was Resources Policy, which is unsurprising given that Western Australia is a

3A list of journal articles authored by UWA Economics staff members was obtained from Scopus (Elsevier B.V., 2013) by searching affiliation and subject matter. The list is not complete as there was no other way available to the author to gain a large collection of journal articles that included citation data and other important information. The article list from Scopus was then compared against the list of Economics Discussion Papers using Fuzzy Lookup (Microsoft Research, 2013), which matched each title and author from each source, producing a match coefficient to rank the matches. The journal articles with a high match coefficient that met a certain citation threshold were then checked manually. The top 22 journal articles by citation are included in Figure 15.

for publication of economic papers.
