Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Theme: “Rejecting Oneself for the Kingdom”
My dear brother’s and sisters, welcome to the 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time!
Life is more than food and the wealth we have accumulated. The word of Jesus in our gospel
reading of today needs to be understood in the light of having Jesus as an ultimate reality
together with the love we have for His messengers. It is clearly said, “Whoever loves father
or mother, son or daughter, more than Me is not worthy of Me. He who does not take up his
cross and come after Me is not worthy of Me. He who seeks only himself brings himself to
ruin, whereas he who seeks only himself to naught for Me discovers who he is.” Jesus has
said it all!
Jesus makes it very clear what it means to be a follower of Jesus and His good news. He is
telling us that no relationship, no matter how intimate or humanly important, can take
precedence over the claims of the Kingdom. To cling to things and relationships as if they are
the ultimate, is to bring ourselves to ruin and discomfort. Continued on page 3

hechos no nacidos.
(Continued from page 1) Why? Because in the end, all such will be revealed as idols.
“They have mouths, but do not speak; they have eyes, but do
not see; they have ears, but do not hear; nor is there any breath in their mouths. (Jer. 10: 14, Psalm 115:5). To be
more concise, idols do not give eternal life. By contrast, the
one who dies to this world, is indifferent to it, and comes to
life eternal.
St. Paul, writing to the Romans, reminds us that baptism is
our entrance into the life of Christ. Christians are made not
born. Through baptism, we have been buried with Christ.
That is, we die to the ultimate claims of this world. Greed,
lust, racism, indifference etc. These vices do not allow us to
exercise ultimate control over ourselves. Baptism is our rebirth into newness of life. That is, we now live for God and
our eyes are opened to see His gracious presence in all
things. We are liberated to use things and enjoy them for the
praise of God and the good of our neighbor. Things like
relationships take on a new meaning, they no longer prove
our worth.
In our reading from Second Kings, the holy man Elisha is
received into the house of a woman of influence. She is able
to see Elisha as “a holy man of God.” She can see God at
work through him. This discernment is what is lacking in many people of God in our present world. To be able to see
their pastors and priests with the faith and love. We often
forget that the Scripture says, “For whoever gives a cup of
water to a prophet to drink in My name, because he belongs
to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his
reward.” (Mathew 10:42). This influential woman in our
reading actually received her reward which money cannot
buy.
In this gospel, Elisha in his part responds to her need for a
son. There is a mutuality in their relationship. She provides hospitality. Elisha is not just a taker. He is not caught up in
his work to the exclusion of others. He is sensitive to her
situation. Hence, “this time next year you will be fondling a
baby son.” This reminds me of these three months of peril
and pandemic, all who visited their priests, made calls,
supported and feed them, the good Lord is going bless them.
Bread and daily sustenance will not lack in their business
and in their household. “The Jar of flour never became
empty, and the jug always contained olive oil, as the Lord
had promised through Elijah” 1 Kings 17: 16. This is our
prayer for all who in one way or another supported us in these difficult months.
Seeing God’s presence in all his ministers and our freedom to
respond to their needs is a lesson we should learn all the days
of our lives especially in difficult situations of the life like
these periods of Coronavirus. This choice of helping
ministers and those in need in our life is a great and
important one, but it is not made once and for all. It is a
choice that has to be made again and again—all through our
life. Why do I say this? Because as we go on living, the
situations we are in can change. And often we are given new occasions to choose Jesus. Let us imitate the influential
woman in our reading today to make the option for Jesus and
those who serve Him.

Spiritual Communion Prayer My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
