US surprised at ‘dramatic’N Korea shift on talksAGENCIES

The US has expressed sur-prise at the “dramatic” shi�in stance by North Koreanleader Kim Jong-un that hasseen President Donald Trumpagree to talks.

US Secretary of StateRex Tillerson said it wouldtake “some weeks” to set upa meeting, due to take placeby May. Trump hailed “greatprogress” but said sanctionswould remain in place.

South Korean envoys hadearlier briefed Trump on themeeting they had this weekwith Kim, saying he wasnow “committed to denuclear-isation.”

South Korea’s PresidentMoon Jae-in said the news ofthe Kim-Trump meeting hadcome “like a miracle”.

“If President Trump andChairman Kim meet following

an inter-Korean summit, com-plete denuclearisation of theKorean peninsula will be puton the right track in earnest,”he said.

China has welcomed the de-velopment, saying the Koreanpeninsula issue was “head-ing in the right direction” andcalling for “political courage”.

However, correspondentssay the North has halted mis-sile and nuclear tests duringprevious talks, only to resumethem when it lost patience orfelt it was not getting what itdemanded.

Tillerson spoke about thedevelopments while in Dji-bouti on an African trip.

He said of Kim Jong-un:“What changed was his pos-ture in a fairly dramatic way.

“In all honesty, that cameas a little bit of a surprise tous, as well that he was so for-ward-leaning in his conver-sations with the delegationfrom South Korea.” In recentmonths, Trump has belittledMr Kim as the “rocket man”,threatening him with “�re andfury”, while Kim has calledTrump “a mentally derangedUS dotard”.

Tillerson said Trump hadbeen open to talks “when thetime was right.”

7 killed, 15 injured inKabul suicide attackAGENCIES

A suicide bomber blew him-self up in the Afghan capital,Kabul, on Friday, killing atleast seven people in an attackon a crowd gathered to com-memorate a political leaderfrom the mainly Shi’ite Haz-ara minority, o�cials said.

One policeman and sixcivilians were killed and 15civilians wounded whenthe bomber was stoppedat a security checkpointin the Mosalla-e Mazararea in Kabul, said NajibDanesh, an interior ministryspokesman.

However, the �nal con-�rmed toll may be higher.Shah Shir Azara, a security

marshal at the site, said 13people had been killed.

The bomber appeared tohave intended to attack acrowd gathered for the an-niversary celebrations of thedeath of Abdul Ali Mazari, aHazara political leader killedby the Taliban in 1995, but hewas stopped before reachingthe main gathering.

While Afghanistan, a main-ly Sunni Muslim country,has not seen the level of sec-tarian violence common inIraq, attacks on Shi’ite targetshave become increasinglycommon.

Over the past two years,a string of attacks on Shi’itemosques and Hazara gather-ings have been claimed by ana�liate of Islamic State.
