LinkedIn is a free business networking site, now approaching 120M members. The site allows members to
maintain a list of contact details with people with whom they have some level of relationship, called a
‘Connection.’ Through LinkedIn, you can contact people you know (1st degree Connections), their contacts
(2nd degree Connections), and their contacts (3rd degree Connections).
LinkedIn provides you with the ability to leverage social media to enhance traditional networking skills. It
provides you with a tool to identify people, companies, and open positions so you can focus your
conversations and other communications with your search network. An important key to networking
success is to tactically and strategically use LinkedIn to make your traditionally networking technique more
effective and more expedient.
LinkedIn is a free service with the option to upgrade by paying a monthly fee. Most people in job search do
not find the need to upgrade but, if you become an avid LinkedIn user, you may want to explore the fee‐
based options.
When you join LinkedIn, you set up a Profile. Your profile is a mini resume of your skills, knowledge, abilities
and job history. This profile is searched by recruiters and other hiring authorities when they are seeking to
fill job openings. Once your profile is established, you are ready to start networking.
Networking
To the right of the search box at the top of the LinkedIn screen is the ‘Advanced Search’ feature of the site.
This allows you to search for people working in your target company and to see any relationships you may
have with them. LinkedIn then facilitates a personal introduction with a single button, ‘Get Introduced.’
Job Search
Many companies advertise their open positions on LinkedIn. The ‘Jobs’ tab allows you to access these
opportunities, save your search criteria, and save specific jobs in which you have an interest.
6 ©2018 Career Partners International
Groups
Recruiters and HR Departments are using LinkedIn to find candidates for open positions. One of the
methods they use is advertising to groups or searching profiles in groups that are likely to contain their next
new hire. Additionally, in some groups, job leads are shared. You can find different groups to join by
clicking on the ‘Interests’ tab and then the ‘Groups’ tab, then searching on key words for your industry such
as Human Resources, Accounting, etc.
Companies
Company pages in the ‘Interests’ tab allow you to research a firm, follow them for news and updates, apply
for open positions, and identify connections working there.
Login: Access from the Tools screen on PowerMyCareer™ or www.linkedin.com or sign up
as directed.
Extensive training on LinkedIn is available through the ‘Programs’ tab in Momentum™.
Choose ‘Live and Recorded Webinars’ to register for the next live session or to get
immediate access to online training.
Other learning opportunities are found within the ‘Social Networking’ section on the
PowerMyCareer™ Programs tab. In this section, there are two tabs specific to LinkedIn
where you can find a profile checklist, a link to LinkedIn’s official YouTube channel, a link to
LinkedIn’s Help Center, and other resources.
Hint: Our coaches suggest that you log onto LinkedIn and poke around a bit before taking
training.

Other Social Networking Tools: Facebook & Twitter
As of 2016, Facebook has 1.74 billion members. In third quarter 2017, rapidly growing Twitter averaged
at 330 million monthly active users. Both technologies are becoming significant players in the job search and
recruiting worlds. Facebook and Twitter are used by individuals in career transition to find jobs. Employers
and recruiters are increasingly using both social networks to find people to hire. Adding them to your
toolbox of job search strategies can be a wise decision.
Facebook is an immensely popular social network that allows its users to communicate with each other in a
variety of methods – posting on each other’s walls for public viewing, sending private messages, posting
pictures, etc.
Facebook can be used in career transition but it requires a thoughtful approach. Historically used for
communications with friends and family, those who want to use it for professional networking must
consider how they can project the image that they’d like prospective employers to see. This takes the form
of editing your profile, limiting photos that you post, adding content relevant to your search, and potentially
editing your ‘Friends’ list.
Facebook can be effective, easy, and safe for some specific job search opportunities. You can ‘like’
companies to receive current news and job updates. You can also use Facebook to let your social network
know what type of job or company you are seeking and give them frequent updates on how the search is
going. Perhaps one of them will be able to help you or provide a needed introduction.
Facebook has an established pattern of changing security settings with little to no warning. And, security on
this site can be complicated, making it sometimes difficult to understand who can or cannot see your
postings. Review information and settings frequently and carefully.
Twitter is an online micro‐blogging social network that allows its users to communicate in ‘tweets,’ or text‐
based postings of up to 140 characters. First time users should create a profile. This is what recruiters and
hiring managers see when they look up your name. Next step … start ‘following’ others’ tweets and then
begin tweeting yourself.
Twitter can be used in career transition in a variety of ways. With a Twitter account you can ‘follow’
individuals and companies who are tweeting information that is of interest to you, including job openings,
job search advice, and up‐to‐the‐minute company updates. Or, you can create your own tweets,
establishing yourself as an expert to catch the eye of a recruiter or hiring company.

Job Search Websites
Most companies still post opportunities on job search websites. Most job websites allow you to search for
jobs, save search criteria, post your resume, and set up ‘alerts’ – daily emails sent to you with positions that
match your search criteria. Here is a list of top sites:
1. Indeed.com … The #1 Job Site ‐ this free site aggregates listings from thousands of job and company
websites. We recommend using at least one job aggregator in your search.
2. CareerBuilder.com … contracts directly with hiring firms, including over 90% of Fortune 1000
companies. It has an interesting feature for those who are exploring options; you can upload your
resume to CareerBuilder and have it match you to jobs according to your listed experience.
3. Monster.com … was one of the first online job boards. The site has a great tips section but you can
get inundated with junk posts from headhunters for irrelevant positions. It’s an important site on
which to place your resume, but may not be the site where you want to search for opportunities.
4. Ziprecruiter.com…Search and find jobs hiring in your area using this job search engine and apply
with just 1 click.
5. Craigslist.com … although far more low‐tech than other sites, this site can be a great source for
certain types of positions. Generally not a top Fortune 1000 site, it can be helpful for careers such
as administration/office work or writing/editing.
6. Idealist.com ... focuses on the non‐profit market.
7. Dice.com … is THE website for technology and engineering.
8. USA.gov … is THE website for finding and applying for government positions.
9. TheLadders.com … is a fee‐based site that focuses on senior‐level positions. The site reviews
resumes and uses that access to promote their fee‐based resume writing service.
10. Professional Organizations … check the websites of any professional organizations to which you
belong.

Job Search Websites
Job boards use an algorithm‐a formula‐to decide which resumes a hiring authority sees first.
Follow these tips to move your resume to the front of the line:
Update Your Resume Weekly
A recent date is key to getting your resume to the front of the line. Some job websites have a
button to refresh the date on your resume. On others, you may need to make a minor
change to your resume (e.g. take a period out of your resume, save it, put it back in, save it)
and upload it to replace your current resume to re‐date it. Yes, this seems like a lot of silly
work but a recent date is a big piece of the formula.
Have the Right Words in Your Resume
Hiring authorities use simplistic and obvious key words in their searches; often just a job title
(e.g. Data Analyst) or a key piece of software (e.g. SQL) or a skill (e.g. grant writing). Think of
what a recruiter would use to find you and be sure that those words are in your resume. If
you can repeat these words in the resume without degrading its readability, it’s good to do
that. Computers count words and notice repeated words.
Complete the Data Search Boxes
In some websites, you are presented with fields to complete. These are the fields that the
website searches first when deciding who goes on page 1 and who gets page 57 in the
returned results. Complete these sections and think about how you can best maximize their
use. Remember to use those right words you identified above if you can.
Upload your Resume if Possible
If the job site allows you to upload rather than cut ‘n paste, do the upload. It’s easier for
recruiters to download and it keeps your formatting.

Company & Salary Research Websites
There are a lot of excellent internet tools to help you prepare for an interview and for employment
negotiations. These are both situations where information is your best friend.
GlassDoor.com … offers a peek inside the doors of a company. Content is generated by employees, job
seekers, and sometimes the companies themselves. The site provides information on the company, salary
structure, open jobs, and details on interviews. You get free access for 10 days and unlimited future access
for anonymously contributing information on a former company.
LinkedIn.com … Allows you to research companies and sometimes, executive profiles. Many companies
have created a ‘Company Page.’ As an added benefit, when you look up a company you will be presented
with individuals in your network that are in some way connected to current employees at the company.
Finance.Yahoo.com … provides information on industries and companies in a user friendly way. Enter the
stock symbol for any publically‐traded company and get detailed information, including performance,
related news articles, and annual reports.
Mint Global … Provides a wealth of company information including company summaries, executives, news
reports, and peer analysis.
PayScale.com & Salary.com … Both of these sites provide a plethora of salary information. Both sites
provide you with a free salary report.
Login: Access from the Tools screen on PowerMyCareer™ or with the exception of Mint Global,
access directly.

O*Net Occupational Information
O*Net is a free resource provided by the U.S. Department of Labor. Supporting the system is a database of
occupational requirements and worker attributes. It describes occupations in terms of the skills and
knowledge required, how the work is performed, and typical work settings.
Job seekers can: find occupations to explore, search for occupations that use designated skills, browse
occupations by high growth industries, identify key In‐Demand occupations, view occupation summaries and
details, use tie ins from other classification systems such as military or apprenticeship to find corresponding
O*NET occupations, and access jobs in the Green Economy.
O*Net has links to MyNextMove.org, a tool where you can match your skills and interests and find careers
that are a good fit. It includes a special section for the military, enabling those in the armed services to find
jobs that utilize the skills they employed in the military.

not .com.

Mint Global
One of the challenges in Career Transition is finding easy access to the information you want. Mint Global is
a powerful research tool that addresses this challenge.
Mint Global allows you to research companies in your target area. It offers in‐depth profiles of companies
and executives, corporate financials, news and analyst reports. You can investigate companies, gaining
access to executive names and other contact information. Or, you can create a list of target companies to
support your networking strategies.
Many companies also have pages on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter. If you see the LinkedIn, Facebook, or
Twitter symbol next to a company name you can click on the symbol to view your connections, or more
information about the company. Note: You must be logged in to LinkedIn, Facebook, or Twitter to view
additional information.
Your coach can provide you with additional specific instructions on:
Finding a specific company
Creating a target company list
Implementing a ‘snail mail’ mailing
Conducting industry research
Login: Access from the Tools screen on PowerMyCareer™.

Recruiters
Recruiters are paid by the hiring firm. Because of that economic consideration, only some job openings are
generally outsourced to a recruiting firm. The most common positions where recruiters are involved are
those with high salary or unique technical skills (e.g. IT positions and engineers).
PowerMyCareer™ provides you with a recruiter database for those seeking either executive level positions
or for those interested in Venture Capital/PE firms. For individuals in technical positions, you can leverage
Mint Global to find recruiters specializing in your area of expertise.
Login for:
Executive & Venture Capital/PE Firms: Access the icon for Custom Databanks Incorporated
from the Tools screen on PowerMyCareer™.
Technical Positions: Access the icon for Custom Databanks Incorporated from the Tools screen
on PowerMyCareer™. Some of the listed firms also handle non‐executive level placements for
specific industry or job skill sets.
Additionally, Oya’s Recruiter Directory http://www.i‐recruit.com is a free directory which
allows you to search for recruiters by keyword or to browse the listings by specialty of location.
Just be sure to stick with the basics of the recruiter search and don't click on the extra links that
offer fee based services.
Recruiters can be very helpful in a job search but it is important to remember that they work for the
company that hires them, not for you. In negotiations, they will often try to broker a mediated solution to
any stalemates. But, if push comes to shove, they know who is paying the bill. Be judicious in how much
you share with them.
