U.S. National Academy of Sciences Charter (1863)
“The academy shall,whenever called upon by any department of the government, investigate, examine… and report upon any subject of science or art ,… but the Academy shall receive no compensation whatsoeverfor any services to the government of the United States”.
The Academies Organization
• Includes three academies working closely on projects– National Academy of Sciences (1863), National Academy of
Engineering (1964), Institute of Medicine (1973)– Each Academy is a merit based self-perpetuating membership
organization that elects members who have distinguished themselves in their fields of endeavor
• Working arm is the National Research Council (1916)– Includes approximately 1200 employees– Releases roughly 200 reports per year on science policy
questions
