BRAG Safety Pledge

4

SAFETY FIRST !!!

BRAG events take place on public right of ways. We ask motor vehicles to share the road, so we must extend the same courtesy. As much as possible we travel on low traffic roads, however we will need to travel on roads with higher traffic volume and hazards from time to time. No road is perfect and every surface presents its challenges. Exercise your duty of care when riding. Observe road conditions and take appropriate action. If there is a hazard or road you are uncomfortable with please walk your bike or notify SAG who can assist you. Please review the BRAG Safety Pledge you were required to sign to participate in this BRAG event. Please consult the rider handbook provided by Georgia Bikes for more safety information.

YOU MUST STOP AT ALL STOP SIGNS AND RED LIGHTS!! Obey all traffic control devices and exercise caution crossing rail road tracks and road crossings!

5

SAFETY INFO

You are responsible for your own safety - BRAG assists as much as possible in ensuring a safe ride, however you are in control of your ride and safety. Please read carefully the cue sheets and take note of hazards outlined as well as monitor road conditions for hazards not outlined. Also be on the look out for BRAG signs on the roadway warning of hazards. Hazards are always being created and note we can not warn participants of every potential or existing hazard. Cy-

cling can be a dangerous sport - take safety seriously!

You must obey all traffic laws and traffic control devices.

Wear a helmet and ensure your gear is properly functioning.

Communicate with other cyclists to keep each other safe - please yell when appropriate car back, car up, rider on, rider off, etc. Communicate about hazards such as RR tracks, pot holes, rumbles, debris in the road, cracks, animals, etc. Do not yell CLEAR as what is clear for you may not be for others.

Visibility - See and be seen, wear bright clothes, reflective clothing and use lights.

Bicycle lanes and shoulders - please use them when possible and safe to do so.

Report dangerous motorists and cyclists.

In the event of rain, the road and road tires can be slick and brakes can slip. Normal conditions may become more hazardous, especially rail road tracks.

In the event of lightning, take appropriate action and exercise caution.

RIDE OVERVIEW

Thank you for joining us on United States Bicycle Route 21 ride. USBR21 is the first federally designated US Bicycle Route in Georgia and part of the National Corridor Plan which aims to connect cities with a 50,000 mile network of routes. We have a great weekend of activities planned. Each day we will have a ride in the morning that continues into the afternoon, followed by entertainment in each town in the evening. Please refer to this guide as to the day’s schedule and routes.

Chattanooga Starting location: Tennessee RiverPark - 4301 Amnicola Hwy, Chattanooga, TN 37402Summerville location: Dowdy Park - University St, Summerville, GA 30747Rockmart location: Skydive Spaceland Atlanta - 1195 Grady Rd, Rockmart, GA 30153Atlanta Location: Wild Horse Creek Park - 3820 Macedonia Rd, Powder Springs, GA 30127 (Lower lot See page 31)

RIDE Info

Each day on USBR21 there will be a group start. It is especially important you leave with the group and with the police escorts on Friday at 9:00am and Saturday at 8:00am. This will keep everyone safer and give us higher visibility amongst motor vehicle traffic.

SAG Support: Along the route there will be SAG support vehicles, They can be identified by the yellow BRAG flags they will be flying from the windows. To stop a SAG vehicle, simply tap on the top of your helmet. If you are waiting for a sag vehicle, please place your bike upside down perpendicular to the road. If you need immediate assistance, please call 404.382.7747.

USBR 21 is a ride not a race. We encourage you to stop and smell the roses and get a true taste for the vibrant fiber and culture of Georgia, from the border in Tennessee, to its rural small towns.

On USBR you may leave as early as sunrise and as late as 9:00am. As long as you leave during this time frame and maintain a minimum 10 mph pace you will catch all the rest stops while they are open. If you have a slower pace, try to leave a little earlier, if you are faster, you can afford to get a little extra sleep. We have a group start at 9:00am on Friday and Sat & Sun at 8:00am. This will be fun and safer in rela-tion with motor vehicles.

How not to get lost: We have 4 methods for you finding your way on USBR21: 1. This Ride Guide. It includes cue sheets. Please keep this book with you, You may want to place it in a

plastic bag in case of rain. 2. Signs. There will be BRAG arrows at every turn to tell you which way to turn. If there is no arrow it

means go straight. Please exercise caution here as sometimes people like to collect our signs. 3. Road Markings. We mark the routes with paint on the road, before, at and after each turn. When

approaching an intersection or side street please cautiously look out for markings on the road. They

look like this: They will point you in the direction of the turn. Roads are not marked in downtown areas or in areas where it is prohibited (Silver Comet Trail)

4. GPS Routes you can download from the Internet. Please go to www.brag.org, click on rides, USBR21, 2019v Routes, and then you can click on the respective day you wish to download and it will direct you to the ride with GPS app. If you do not have it you can download it for free, which will give you access to the map, and your location on it (must have a smart phone).

RIDE Info

NOTE: When a rest stop closes per the times on this route description, sag wagon and me-

chanical support to that point will cease. Please plan your riding pace and departure time accordingly.

BRAG is not responsible for any road markings or arrows from prior rides or events. If you have any doubt as to the current route, please refer to this route description and/or the route map.

Always wear your helmet while on your bike. Helmets are required on BRAG.

Please take off your gloves and wash your hands at each rest stop before approaching the food table.

Obey all traffic signs and signals.

Ride single file when traffic is present.

Please announce yourself when passing other riders by saying On your left and passing on the left. Please do not pass on the right.

Please consult the rider handbook provided by Georgia Bikes for more safety information.

Go Skydiving! Skydive Spaceland Atlanta has some great deals for us and once you're done with your ride you can go jump out of a plane. Reservations recommended, or you can go visit the fine folks in the office when you arrive onsite.

Music Trivia - get a team together and test your musical knowledge. We'll play songs and give you related questions.

Fire Side Smores - We'll have an awesome fire to warm ourselves and we'll provide the smore stuff! You just bring a stick!

Bands - We've got some great talent coming to SkyDive SpaceLand. This year we are switching it up and having them play fireside! It'll be an awesome acoustic jam session.
