The ASHRAE Experience

President’s Message By: John Semtner Many of our members are returning from whirlwind trips to the Winter Conference this week. Not only did we have a positive member turnout, but we had students from OU & OSU attend. Once again it was a great conference where knowledge is learned, connections are made, and memories are had. Those are the reasons we are an organization and why I am so proud to be part of ASHRAE. We are coming up on a few more trips and many events. In late April we will head to our Region VIII CRC in Tyler, TX. I encourage everyone to plan to attend and make reservations soon. More information to come. We will be hosting the CRC in 2017 and we want to welcome all the chapters at this year’s CRC. It is a great time to learn more about the organization and learn about some great technical opportunities. Early in April we will travel to Stillwater for our tour of the OSU steam and chilled water plant before it is replaced. Next month we will hold our first ever sporting clay event in Guthrie. I hope everyone can join and will sponsor to raise money for Research Promotion. Contact Chris Dolan if you would like to attend or sponsor. Late this month there are some HVAC basics courses in Houston, society is putting on. I encourage anyone with new hires to take a look into this. We have lots more coming in the months ahead, from our regular meetings, to YEA events, to sustainability volunteering, to student outreach. Please reach out to committee chairs if you would like to be involved or have an idea to make ASHRAE a better organization.

Student Activities Winter Conference and EOCTech By: Madison Schultz

We had a lovely time at the ASHRAE Winter Conference in Orlando, FL! The conference was held at the Orlando Hilton on January 23-27 in conjunction with the AHR Expo at the Orange County Convention Center on January 25-27. We had five students from ASHRAEcok attend. Four of these students have focused on HVAC+R during their schooling and are currently seeking employment. If your company is seeking employees, I can put you in contact with these eligible

candidates. ASHRAEcok also visited our EOCTech Student Branch on January 21. We spoke about ASHRAE and the benefits of joining. Thank you Mike Clark and Damon McClure for joining SA for the presentation! We are always looking for more ASHRAEers to join SA as regular committee members or one-time volunteers. If you want to get involved with SA or sponsor an upcoming event, please contact me at 405-416-8205 or [email protected].

Membership Promotion Update on COK’s Membership By: Daniel Brazeale We are doing great as a chapter on retaining new members, recruiting new members, and convincing old members to come back. Our net increase in membership so far this year is at 7 with our goal for the ASHRAE Calendar being 6. With that said we have 14 members currently on the delinquency report expected to fall off by the end of the year. Please send any potential members my way so we can reach out to them and see if ASHRAE is a good fit.

We also had two past ASHRAE COK members re-join our ranks: Jason Blair Alejandro Sanchez Steven Sullivan Aaron Campbell Clarence Trail

Please join me in welcoming these new members and if you see them at any ASHRAE events please introduce yourself! If you happen to run across any of the new members at the next meeting, please reach out to them and make them feel welcome. Let’s make sure we’re keeping our roster updated. Please let me know if someone you know has moved out of our chapter, left the industry, or has passed away. Additionally, if you need help registering for membership, renewing your membership or simply want to chat feel free to email or call. Daniel Brazeale can be reached at 405-464-3677 or [email protected]

YEA Fassler Hall By: Andy Donehue

We had such a great first half of the year with our YEA group. Look for more fun events for the second half of the year. In January we tried out some German fare at Fassler Hall in Midtown. I would like to thank Engineered Equipment for sponsoring the event! This was one of our largest events that we have had so far with nearly 20 people. Come and join us next

time and get to know some of the other people in the industry.

We also had seven YEA members and three students attend the AHR Winter Expo. It was great getting together in Orlando and seeing the direction of products in our industry. Again, I would like to thank Engineered Equipment for sponsoring our latest YEA event at Fassler Hall. If you want to get involved or would like to sponsor an event I can be reached at 405-317-0552 or [email protected]. Sponsorship for an event is $200. If you would like more information about YEA, please contact me or go to www.ashrae.org/YEA.

Scholarships Continue Building Success By: Caleb Spradlin

This last month the Central Oklahoma Chapter of ASHRAE awarded two students each with a $1,500 scholarship from our Oklahoma City Community Foundation (OCCF) fund. The two recipients were Aaron Gooden and Alejandro Rivas. Both students attend the University of Oklahoma. For the fall 2015 semester, the OCCF was offering a ½ amount match

into their funds at a maximum match of $5,000 (from a $10,000 donation). This last month the Central Oklahoma Chapter donated the maximum of $10,000 to the OCCF. This donation was met with the $5,000 match from the Foundation, making the total contribution to the Scholarship fund $15,000.

Oklahoma Future City

As you know ASHRAE is a proud supporter of the Oklahoma Future City competition. In past years our members have served as mentors, judges, and coordinators for the state competition. Several schools are in need of mentors. If you are interested in volunteering to mentor a team, please let me know ASAP. Mentors usually just meet with their team 3-4 times during the fall school semester. The teams can usually work to make it fit into the mentor's schedule. Also, Future City has modified its scope slightly to incorporate the Project Management Process. This means that professional project managers would be great mentors as well (whether they are engineers or not). The theme of this year's Future City Competition is solid waste/trash. If you would like to learn more about the Oklahoma Future City competition, please visit http://futurecity.org/showcase/presenting-city-17 Please contact Aruna at [email protected] if you would like to volunteer. Thank you for your help.

UPDATE:

The Oklahoma Regional Future City competition was held on the OCCC campus Saturday, January 23rd. Fourteen teams from area schools displayed their entries and presented their projects to teams of judges. This year's theme was "Waste Not, Want Not" The winning team was from St. Philip Neri Catholic School with their city "Moscovia". They narrowly beat out Irving Middle School's (Norman, OK) entry "New Norman" which placed second in the competition. Here are some of the other entries from the competition:

ASHRAE Government Affairs Update 1/2016

ASHRAE President-Elect Tim Wentz Conducts bEQ on University of Nebraska-Lincoln Campus The University of Nebraska – Lincoln is embarking on a long-term program to improve the energy performance of its 153 existing buildings on the city campus. To achieve this goal, the University decided to develop a new training program that brought together students, faculty and practicing professionals within the Facility Management department by using a “living laboratory” concept. To accomplish this objective a partnership was formed between the University of Nebraska’s Facility Management department and the Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction (DSAEC) to produce a new course to teach students and staff how to accurately and consistently benchmark and disclose energy consumption in existing buildings, recommend low cost/no cost Energy Efficiency Measures (EEMs) and identify potential capital improvement projects to produce better building performance. The course was constructed to allow it to be exported to universities, colleges, and student branches worldwide. The new course trains students to conduct an ASHRAE Level 1 Energy Audit and to produce an ASHRAE Building Energy Quotient (bEQ) In Operation rating label for existing buildings. These tools allow Facility Management to develop both short-term and long-term energy conservation plans to reduce the energy consumption of the target buildings. Moreover, the application of a building energy label or rating is also a motivator for the building occupants whereby their behavior can be changed to save additional energy. The students were divided into teams with each team assigned a professional engineer from either Facility Management or the Durham School to provide oversight and to comply with ASHRAE bEQ requirements. Each team was also provided with an HVAC technician that was directly responsible for the operation and maintenance for the building under review, thus allowing both the students and the HVAC technician to learn from each other about building benchmarking and disclosure applications. Facility Management provided a pool of existing buildings with a wide spectrum of use, age and perceived energy efficiency. The course successfully produced four ASHRAE Level 1 Energy Audit reports and four bEQ labels. Recently, the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) in the United Kingdom announced that the University of Nebraska – Lincoln program was short-listed for CIBSE’s prestigious Building Performance Training Award.
