April 2015
seem to be working
much better and
students are work-
ing extremely hard
to do the best they
can. State assess-
ment results and
data will not be
available until next
fall. Students and parents should
receive results next semester.
As the end of the school year
quickly comes to a close, we do
have a Fun Night scheduled at All-
Star Adventures on Friday, April
17th from 6:00-9:00 PM. The cost
per student is $20 which includes
unlimited mini-golf, bumper boats,
go-carts and amusement rides.
This event is sponsored by your
outstanding PAWS organization,
and All-Star Adventures will share
proceeds with the PAWS organiza-
tion which will in turn impact our
students at Andover Central Mid-
dle School. This event is open to
all ACMS students, and we hope
all students can make it out!
The next month is going to be ac-
tion packed for the students of
ACMS. Enjoy a great start to
spring, and as always, thanks for
all you do to make ACMS a great
place for kids!
The 4th quarter is off to a great
start at ACMS, with a variety of
great events taking place in the
month of April. From kicking of
state assessments and our spring
sports seasons to performing in
Pioneer League choir and band
contests, we are excited about what
the month will bring!
On April 24th, our 8th grade stu-
dents will be participating in an
activity called Reality University,
sponsored by the Communities in
Schools Organization. This event
allows students to experience what
life might be like when they are 25
years old. Each student will be
given a life profile based on a ca-
reer interest survey, GPA and cur-
rent Butler County divorce rates.
Students will have a set monthly
income and have to make it
through a variety of booths with
the money they are given. From
housing and transportation to insur-
ance and cell phone bills, students
will get an eye opening experience
of how much it costs to survive in
the adult world. Be on the lookout
for opportunities to volunteer at
this great event on April 24th.
Both 6th and 7th Grade enrollment
will also begin this month, so be on
the lookout for enrollment infor-
mation coming home in the next
few weeks. Students will rank or-
der their top choices for explorato-
ry and elective classes and we will
begin the scheduling process in
early May.
April also brought with it the
recognition of Ginger Steck, recipi-
ent of the 2015 Kansas Master
Teacher Award presented annually
by Emporia State University. The
award ceremony was held on April
1st in Emporia. Also in attendance
were two other Kansas Master
Teacher recipients from ACMS.
Cindy Ehrstein received this award
in 2012 and Lori Gunzelman re-
ceived this honor in 2014.
Students have been hard at work as
we kicked off state assessments
right after spring break. The state
of Kansas implemented a new test-
ing format last year, and the system
was plagued with problems, in
many cases not allowing students
to even complete assessments. Stu-
dents experienced frustration with
the assessment as answer choices
sometimes did not exist, graphs or
diagrams students were to refer to
were not present and multiple sys-
tem crashes at the state level kept
students from doing the work they
wanted to do.
This year however, the system does

Officials at the Teachers College at Emporia State announced the 2015 class of Kansas Master Teachers on February 23
rd. A committee that in-
cluded representatives from Kansas Association of School Boards, Kan-sas Association of Secondary School Principals, Kansas Association of Elementary School Principals, Kansas Parent Teacher Association, Kan-sas National Education Association, United School Administrators, Kap-pa Delta Pi, the 2014 Master Teacher class, National Teachers Hall of Fame and Center for Innovative School Leadership selected the recipi-ents.
Seven teachers within the state were selected as Master Teacher recipi-ents and will be honored at Master Teacher Day on April 1. On that day, the teachers will present at a seminar, “Adapting to the Future of P-12 Education,” at 2:30 p.m. in the Jones Conference Center. Then they will
be honored during a social hour at 5:15 p.m. in Webb Hall Lobby of Emporia State’s Memorial Union. That will be followed by the dinner awards program at 6:30 p.m. in Webb Hall.
Ginger has been in education for 24 years. She spent 15 of those years in Andover at Meadow-lark Elementary and now is in her 4
th year at Andover Central Middle School. She is known for
incorporating science and a variety of media spectrum into her daily instruction. She is an out-standing teacher and is a deserving candidate of the 2015 Kansas Master Teacher Award.
Congratulations Mrs. Ginger Steck!

WSU MINDSTORMS Challenge Results
On March 7, nine Andover teams made up of 3rd-8th grade students competed in WSU's Mind-storms Challenge. This year's event had a theme of "Dr. Wu" and attracted 36 teams from Kansas and Oklahoma and more than 600 student competitors and spectators.
Students spend months preparing for the Shocker Mindstorms Challenge, developing their sci-ence, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills, as well as teamwork, sportsmanship and communication. On competition day, teams try to score the most points by running LEGO robots through obstacle courses designed by College of Engineering students. They are also required to demonstrate what they learned through presentations, team displays and notebooks. Sportsman-ship and spirit are judged throughout the day to promote collaboration and teamwork.
Geek Squad.docx, made up of ACMS students, placed 2nd in the Intermediate division while the Anderby Dalek Hunters, also of ACMS, placed 4th in the division. The IVEA team, made up of And-over students, placed 2nd in the Beginner II division and the Bot Bombs from Wheatland elemen-tary, placed 3rd in the Beginner division.
