On Friday, October 16th, Orange County Council, Boy Scouts of America, took fundraising

to new heights with local residents, volunteers and business leaders rappelling 17 stories

off the Irvine Marriott to benefit Scouting.

Going Over the Edge for Scouting was a fun, once in a lifetime opportunity for many in-

cluding Eagle Scout and former Newport Beach mayor Don Webb and Ben, a former Scout

and marine who suffered a traumatic brain injury nine years ago. His mother and friends

were thrilled and so proud of him for doing it! And Ben; “He can’t stop talking about it!”

“Being pictured in the Orange County Register and being on television were extra bonuses.

A Scout’s Success—Scout Earns Prestigious Lifesaving Award Ian Casson never looked to become a hero. But when the opportunity required it, in true

Boy Scout fashion, he was prepared.

The son of a firefighter, a longtime member of the Huntington Beach Junior Lifeguards at

the time and on his way to becoming an Eagle Scout, Casson had the training and the

DNA needed to help save two terrified Boy Scouts who found themselves pinned behind

a pounding 200-foot waterfall.

“I feel it should be the norm,” he said. “Anyone who has the tools and training to help

someone should do that.”

The Huntington Beach resident was awarded the prestigious Honor Medal with Crossed

Palms, the Boy Scouts National Lifesaving Award at his Eagle Scout Court of Honor. The

medal is one of fewer than 300 the Boy Scouts have awarded nationally since 1924, and

is given for “unusual heroism and extraordinary skill or resourcefulness in saving or

attempting to save a life at extreme risk to self.”

"Receiving this medal is a tremendous honor. It's an incredible feeling to know that I am

being honored as highly as this. But I didn't do this for an award. I did this because I heard that there were two people that needed

help and I knew that I could help them. I think that anyone who has the skill set to do anything for somebody else should do that,”

said Casson.

To those who know Casson, it is fitting. Casson's Scout leaders praised his ability to take direction and his willingness to help

others. "To watch him grow and achieve this rank is a major achievement. But then to hear he earned his Honor Medal with Cross

Palms is just amazing. There are a lot of great young men, but to find one who is willing to risk their own life is very rare," said

former assistant Scout leader Steve Vasquez.

Huntington Beach City Councilman Erik Peterson agrees. He stated, "And this is one of those selfless acts that Scouting is based on.

It's more than just you, it's everyone around you. It's an honor to come out and give this award to someone like Ian. This young

man went the extra mile for that award."

A Scout is Kind!

"As we were placing flags at the grave sites of veterans, Noah and I came across the grave of an 11-year-old boy who died in 1967. He happened to be a Cub Scout! On the gravestone is a Cub Scout logo. Noah decided that he should be honored as well." Chris Hillstead, Scout parent.

‘Stock(ing) gifts are a great way to support Scouting at

year-end! A gift to Scouting of stocks or bonds may provide you with even greater tax benefits than a cash gift of equal value. This is especially true for securities that have appreciated in value and could generate capital gains tax if sold. Please check with your tax advisor for details.

For more information on how to make a stock gift, please contact Devon Dougherty at [email protected] or call 714-546-8558, x145.

Financially supporting Scouting is an investment in youth. BSA is the most successful youth leadership development, educationally relevant and environmentally conscious movement in America.
