COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSONS

TRAIL MANNERS

Good manners is the grease that helps people get along with each other avoiding friction. UNDER 16 MUST WEAR A HELMET. Be aware of the effect your actions have on oth-

ers, their horses and their property. Do not upset your co-rider’s horses. Ride at a quiet, controlled pace. NEVER PASS OTHERS AT A GALLOP. Keep a safe distance… don’t crowd others. STAY WITH A DISMOUNTED RIDER Respect the property of others. (ie: lawns, farm

fields, crops, groves, livestock, etc.) Leave gates as you found them: Open gates

should remain open. Closed gates should remain closed.

DO NOT PASS THE TRAIL BOSS or drop behind the drag rider.

Stay with the trail boss on the same side of the road. Do not split the road.

Clean up after your horse. Pick up manure or spread it depending on where you are. Do not clean your trailers out when you unload.

NO PROFANITY ON ANY SFTR EVENTS. REMEMBER! If you mind your manners others won’t mind when you and your horse return to ride.

HORSE CHARITIES

The SFTR donates to these charities once a year. These charities are badly in need of donations. Please try to send what you can to help them. Thanks from the SFTR.

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE As we close out 2015 and begin 2016, think about the resolutions you made. Were you able to keep them or did you fall short? If you kept them, great! If not, you have another opportunity. Once again, the SFTR activities have been many and varied. We are in the process of planning another great year for your pleasure and enjoy-ment. Hopefully, one of your resolutions will be to participate in more of our events. Being a trail boss is a very rewarding experience. I want to thank all of our trail bosses for such an amazing job this past year. Since our last newsletter some wonderful events have taken place. Gina’s Thanksgiving cam-pout and dinner was a resounding success. The parade team, led by Debi and Craig Priest, was also awesome. The club’s Christmas party, hosted by Denise and Chad Kanke, turned out great even though the weather was not perfect. We enjoyed getting acquainted with several new members and are looking forward to seeing them on the trails. The annual Jingle Bell Jaunt, led by Carrie Hershberger, collected many toys, gift cards, and money to be used by the Miami Dade Fire Department for distribution to families that get burned out of their homes at this time of year. Augie and J.C. Vina trail bossed the National Day of the Horse ride from the Vina ranch. Then Do-mingo Hernandez gave a clinic on horse restraint while camping and camping gear. The last official ride of the year, the Candy Cane Ride, was trail bossed by Sylvia Cruz Alvarez and Carolina Rodriguez. Will you consider being a trail boss? If so, contact Andrea Sante to schedule a ride. Again, thank you to all of our trail bosses. Some of the events upcoming include the annual Black-eyed Pea ride on January 1, 2016. The trail bosses will be J. C. and Lynn Vina. This is a great way to start the New Year. Look for more details on the dates and places page. Once again, we will be involved with the ‘Books and Broncs’ program sponsored by the Homestead Rodeo Association. This is an activity that promotes reading to some area elementary school children. There is a “first touch” part when horses are taken to an area school so the children can touch a horse (some for the first time), and a culminating activity at the rodeo grounds on the Thursday prior to the rodeo. Bonny George has gra-ciously consented to head this up, so, if you want to be included, please contact her. We need a lot of people and horses for this event. Also, associated with the rodeo is the Parade and Funnel Cake booth. Your participation is greatly appreciated at all of these events. Please, join us and share the love of horses with others. Two of the objectives of SFTR are to preserve green spaces and open new trails. This year we have had some wonderful people from Naples join our club and are actively engaged in meeting those objectives on that side of the state. Thank you, Curtis and Robyn Anderson, for banding together for this cause on the west coast. Speaking of preserving green spaces, your board has donated $250 to the Back Coun-try Horseman’s Association to help them in their efforts to fight HR 1931. This is a bill that has been introduced into Congress in April that would allow them to sell eight percent of BLM land and eight percent of the National Forest System. You can look this bill up on line and get more details. We also need to write to our Congressmen to share our opinions on this issue. Your board has also voted to take out a full page ad in the Osceola Wagon Train Ride booklet. This will help them out and promote our wonderful club. Have a safe and blessed New Year. Happy Trails

COLLIER COUNTY TRAIL RIDERS UNITE

A group of Collier County trail riding enthusiasts, mostly from the Golden Gate Estates area, have joined together in an at-tempt to have horseback riding trails included in the plans for a new regional park near the Collier County fairgrounds. The plans for this Big Corkscrew Island Regional Park show a 160 acre multi-use park that looks very similar to other parks in the county. The group, currently being referred to as the Golden Gate Estates Horse Own-ers, is asking for a simple bridle path that would run around the pe-rimeter of the park and a suitable parking area for trailers with ade-quate turn around space.

This park is being built in the middle of Collier County's "horse country". It is the perfect place to have equine accommoda-tions. The park planners repeatedly say they want to build a "trademark" park that is different from all the other county parks but are failing to realize they could do exactly that by letting it be eq-uine friendly. The GGEHO feel that horseback riding trails would make this park unique and set it apart from the others.

Collier County has the reputation of being unfriendly to equine activities. They are living up to their reputation by not in-cluding trails in the park plan to date and are repeatedly attempting to redirect trail requests. The GGEHO group is working diligently to change this. A written petition has been circulated and currently has over 275 signatures of Collier horse enthusiasts supporting trails at the park.

Representatives have attended public park planning meet-ings and Parks and Recreation Advisory Board Meetings in an at-tempt to voice their desires. Members have written letters to adviso-ry council members and county commissioners expressing the re-quest for trails. The most recent development is that two separate meetings were held to further unite the Collier trail riding enthusi-asts and to encourage them to join forces with South Florida Trail Riders, Inc.

If you would like more information and to help us get equestrian trail in the above park, please contact Robyn Anderson at 239-250-6186.

HOMESTEAD VETERAN’S DAY PARADE Our riders proudly carried the flags for all branches of the armed services, and Kelly Reynolds proudly carried the American flag with her Rodeo Queen sash. We had some new riders and walkers including Miami-Dade County Commissioner Daniella Levin-Cava. We had a few last minute “hick-ups” like no truck! YIKES! Fortunately, Rene Reynolds (proudly in her Ar-my uniform) graciously unhitched her new truck and Vicki Martine took the wheel! Shortly thereafter our “scheduled” truck showed up along with the temperamen-tal horse who finally decided to get in the trailer! Team Members and Parade goers had a great time thanking our Veterans and cheering everyone on! Back at the trailers we enjoyed friendship and plentiful pizza from The Big Cheese of Homestead. Once again, thank you for all the Team Support and for looking like our usual selves. AWESOME!! Debi & Craig

June 2016

Remember Your First Horse??? It is a magical moment when you first wrap your hand around a lead line, stroke a flowing mane and look into the eyes of your very own first horse. The smile of pride, and the visions of adventures to be shared with your new best friend. And so it has begun for two of our SFTR Juniors from the FFA Varela parade group. Emily Morgan sat tall aboard her new horse, Blue - in her first ride with the SFTR...the Veteran's Day parade. Now as a mounted Parade Team member, Emily smiled and waved to the cheering crowds, feeling the elation of the day. Willy's old steed has found a loving home, and a kind owner in Emily. Congratulations on their first parade together!

Another match made by Elena & Jorge Ramos, is that of Jennifer Oliva and Cola – a 5 yr. old grade QH gelding she bought from Royce & Alexis Roun-saville, of Angel's Haven Ranch, Homestead. It appears Cola was ridden previously by our very own JJ, and promises to be a great trail prospect for Jennifer, as she pursues lessons with Lisa Miller. Her smile shows her joy and anticipation of first horse ownership! We welcomed these two ladies as part of our FFA parade volunteers, and now will be able to share many rides and adventures with them for years to come. So to you both, from your friends in the SFTR...Happy Trails!

CRACKER COWHUNTERS HIT THE TRAIL AGAIN The Great Florida Cattle Drive of ‘16 runs January 23 –

30, 2016. Yes, it is going to happen once again and registration for the event is now underway. The Drive will begin at the historic Whaley Ranch on Canoe Creek Road south of St. Cloud, and end at the new Silver Spurs Arena in Kenansville, Florida

In 1995 to celebrate a 150 years of statehood, a group of 600 cattlemen, historians, horse lovers and hearty adventurers drove 1000 head of native cracker cattle across the state. The group also included wagon drivers, walkers, artists plus local, state and national media.

Over the last five centuries cattle production has been one of Florida’s biggest and most influential industries. Twenty (20) years ago drive participants used the sesquicentennial celebration to educate this state’s citizens and folks around the globe, to the fact that the cattle business in the United States began right here in Florida. That’s right; the first American cowboys were Floridians. Because of the international press coverage of the 95 Drive, people in Japan, Australia, Europe and even those from strange lands like California and New York came to know the meaning of the term Cracker Cowhunter. Florida’s Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam commented “Even though this industry has been important to our state and even though Florida has been a major force in the cattle business for the last two hundred years or more, very few of our own citizens are aware of this rich heritage”.

To celebrate the previous drives and to salute the im-portance of Florida’s “cow culture” organizers will once again be driving cattle, riding the trail, sleeping on the ground and living the life of our ancestors; even if only for a few days. The cow folks of Florida have provided around 500 head of cattle and every participant, who wishes to, will be able to spend some time as a “cowhunter” helping to drive the cattle. Camps will be primitive and dress should be as close to late 1800’s as possible. There will

Jan. 2016

be no T-shirts, tennis shoes or ball caps allowed. There will be historic encampments each night along the trail depicting some important era in Florida’s history, (Timucuan, Spanish Colonial, Civil War, Seminole, etc.) making the event even more of a ride through Florida’s past.

Saturday January 30th, participants and the public will continue the celebration at trails end with an old fashioned “Trail’s End Celebration”, often called a “FROLIC” in the old days, which will include authors, singers, poets, storytellers, historians, re-enactors and an art auction featuring CAAF (Cowboy Artists As-sociation of Florida). There will also be several prominent authors of Floridiana and Florida history on hand for those who wish to learn more about the rich heritage of the Sunshine State.

Dancers, singers and historians from The Seminole Tribe of Florida will be there to make the event more colorful and to remind folks that the Seminoles were an important factor in this states development as a cattle power; and remain so to this day. This part of the celebration will become an annual gathering to have fun and preserve the traditions of Florida’s cow culture. Pro-ceeds will be used to benefit the Florida Agricultural Museum in Flagler County, and the Florida Cow Culture Preservation Com-mittee Inc. (non-profit; all volunteer). We are proud to be sponsor-ing 10 of our wounded veteran heroes and up to 10 young cow-hunters for the experience of a lifetime on the Drive of ‘16.

Big bosses of the drive are anxious to give thanks to The Seminole Tribe of Florida, The Florida Cracker Cattle Association, Syfrett Cattle Feeds, The Florida Agricultural Museum, Seminole Feeds of Ocala, The Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo, and The Florida Dept. of Agriculture And Consumer Services for their sponsorships and support.

TOYS FOR KIDS DECORATED HORSES & FESTIVE FUN

We arrived at Larry and Penny Thompson Memori-al Park around 8:00 am. We had a few minutes in the mango grove all to ourselves. What a peaceful beautiful space. It was an awesome sunny morning after the rain we had all week. Jane Brown, activities director for the park, was the first to arrive followed by David and Heidi. The flat- bed trailer David borrowed from South Dade Soil and Water Conservation District was perfect. Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the red- nosed reindeer rode on top of David’s Jeep that pulled the hay ride through the park for the parade. Too Cute! Thanks to everyone who decorated the hay wagon. Our own Santa had a special place of honor. Thank you, Mike, for putting in a good word for us. The hay wagon looked great right down to the white spray snow on the tires. The horse trailers and cars started rolling in. As everyone was getting ready we had donuts, comple-ments of Ben Kroner, for all to enjoy. While we were all signing in for our ride Robert and Jeni Nunez, Willy Perez’s daughter and son-in-law brought gifts and pre-sents from their boys and family members. The Nunez’s and several other family members rode on the hay wag-on to help us celebrate. Their gifts were beyond gener-ous. Thank You!!!

We started the judging for the costume contest right on schedule. Jane Brown, our faithful judge, had a very difficult task. Our second judge, Karen Josephs, from the fire department was not feeling well enough to stay. Thanks, Karen, for coming and trying so hard to make it through.

The fire truck arrived right on time and with the judging complete we lined up to start our parade through the campground. Thank you, park residents, for your generous support of this activity. Again this year you outdid yourselves with your monetary gifts and toys. With the parade completed, everyone was treated to our traditional holiday hot dog lunch. This year Bonnie George added some apples for the horses and some wonderful pineapple to complete our menu. Our winners of the costume contest were announced and the prizes were awarded. Our winners for 2015 are:

FANTASTICALLY FESTIVE: Kiersten Shaffner on Spike. HOLIDAY HYSTERIA: David and Heidi driving Cody. OUTRAGEOUSLY ORIGINAL: Amanda Kardol on Tambo

DELIGHTFULLY DECORTIVE: Taylor leading Sassy Holly Jolly Walker: Michelle pushing Jason in his stroller Jolly Jingle Junior: Olivia Kordol on Sky

We collected 304 toys and $1271.00 dollars in gift cards and cash. All our efforts for the children of Miami Dade County will be distributed through the “Toys 4 Kids” program of the Miami Dade Fire De-partment.

With every successful event there are people that work behind the scenes. All year David and Heidi have promoted the JBJ . They reported $1,438.26 in total gifts. Toys and cash with the help of Dougie from Thunder Country Radio 100.3 FM and their church, Silver Palm Methodist, plus the marketing of the” horse feathers” in local establishments. A great deal of personal hard work on their part made it all possi-ble. A huge thank you goes to Cooper McMillan and Bill Townshend for the use of the flatbed trailer for the hay ride. This was also a direct result of David’s ef-forts on our behalf. We are sending out a great big thank you to the Perez Family for their generosity as a memorial to Willy, our beloved Board member who passed away suddenly this past year. They were able to give over $400 in gift cards and over 40 toys to our efforts. Our gratitude also goes out to Ginger Krenz (Another Perfect Horse) for the lesson certificates as part of the prizes for the costume contest.

Thank you, ‘team’, for your part in another successful Jingle Bell Jaunt. I hope I have been able to remember everything and everyone. Thank you all again, Wayne and Carrie Hershberger WISHING YOU A BLESSED CHRISTMAS AND A PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR

BOOKS AND BRONCS LITERACY PROGRAM RETURNS!

Thanks to Taylor Pearce for writing & illustrating her just published book Let's Rodeo, and to the Homestead Ro-deo Assn. for their sponsorship, the SFTR is again privi-leged to assist in our long time literacy program for local first graders. Organized by Dawn Pearce, the SFTR has already held successful events at West Homestead & Redondo Elem, where 238 youngsters have thus far gleefully petted horses of our SFTR members. Many thanks to those who partici-pated in our school visits, but we are in need of many more SFTR volunteers to complete our First Touch assignments. On Jan. 8, 2016 we will visit Leisure City Elem.(14950 SE 288 St, Miami, 33030) and expect to thrill 84 students in their First Touch experience, and will need at least 6 horses and 12 handlers (owner holds the lead lined horse + 1 extra safety person). Arriving at 8:30am, the students meet our horses at 9am; & we finish 30-45 min. later. It is quick, easy and fun...and best of all, we promote the love of both reading and horses to yet another generation. The finale is a Kid's Day at the Rodeo grounds, Jan. 21, where we will need approx. 20 horses and 40 members! This is your chance to witness all the students we visited as they come to a morning-'til-lunch equine experience! So help foster positive thoughts in children, and give me a call to join in our last two literacy events – as we give back to our community (305-233-1897). Thanks! Bonny George, Jr.

La Caprichosa was rescued on July 2, 2014, found aban-doned with two other Paso Finos and a Thoroughbred on vacant, remote property in SW Miami-Dade. This beauty was once a kid’s show horse…Laurie has known this mare since the day she was born and recognized her. La Capri-chosa will make an excellent trail horse. Contact Laurie at [email protected] for adoption info. Donations can be made at www.helpthehorses.com

PARADE TEAM NEWS

JR ORANGE BOWL PARADE A HUGE Thanks to everyone who feasted all Thanksgiving weekend (some running back to town) to don their “little bit tighter” uniforms and WOW the crowd with our 13!! beautiful horses and wishes of Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! We had a great turnout of horses, walkers, truck driver, banner carriers, food picker-upper, lead-liner (welcome Alani Lopez! who was led on her pony by her father, Rolan-do!), and wagon puller, David, who pulled crowd pleaser’s Raven & Erin Davis-Chu in their decorated red wagon! Not to be outdone was the ever popular pooper scooper bringing up the rear! It was great seeing Kristine Lundblad from Broward on her flashy pinto, and we missed Heidi Stibitz & David Ruiz driving their carts due to Heidi’s work schedule but SO very glad they came to walk it! A big thank you to Michelle Foster-McDaniel who picked-up ALL the chicken and goodies;-) and for Ginger Krenz who drove her festive red truck! To all the names I didn’t mention, please know that I appre-ciate every one of you and realize the sacrifices you make to be a part of our Team and to continue this wonderful tradition of bringing in the Holidays! Once again, we looked AWESOME! HOMESTEAD RODEO PARADE Bring in the New Year with the Homestead Ro-deo Parade on Saturday, January 23, 2016! Since this is an open parade, if you don’t have a parade uniform and want to join us, wear black pants, white long-sleeved button-down shirt and cowboy hat/helmet and please join us! If you love a parade but don’t want to bring a horse, we can always use side-walkers! This will be our final parade of the season and I look for-ward to another great turn-out! After the parade we will enjoy friendship and pizza from the Big Cheese of Homestead. We hope to see you there! Meet in field across from VFW in Homestead at 9:00 AM. Directions: US1 south to approx. SE 6 Ave turn right on East side of highway. This is the first road south of Campbell Drive (312 St) just past Keyes strip mall. Take the turnpike south to Campbell Dr. exit; go west to US1 then turn left (south) go to SE 6 Ave turn right, parking area on right side about 1/2 mile down . Call Debi 305-775-1820.

SFTR / SFTR RALLY I was asked by Kathleen Monahan, President of the SPCA if we could team up with the SPCA and hold the end of the year fundraiser since we did not have it in August. So in 6 weeks we put this Rally together and everyone did a fantastic job. We had plenty of raffle items and baked goods from both Trail Riders and SPCA members. The highlight was the $500 gift card that Robbie’s Feed donated. A huge THANK YOU goes to Robbie & Jamie. Jamie also came out that morning and told us an-yone who donates will get 20% off of their complete order! That was great as it included feed & hay! We collected a total of $6,250 and Karen Buckhalt won the Robbie’s gift card. Congratulations to Karen, she is a staunch supporter of the SPCA. Thans again to all who made this day possible!
